Greetings, TTPYC Members, This month, I want to recognize the very important contributions of some of our often overlooked members The TTPYC animal companions! Without us cruising would be just plain boring. I mean where would the Hubbards be if Indie and Cookie didn t take them for walks every morning? And Chloe is at almost every party she has better attendance than most human members! And who could forget Toonie in his sunglasses he is a real cut up and brings smiles to everyone. Murphy and Mollie help command the largest ship in our TTPYC fleet. Samantha, the Sea Dog, is always recruiting new members. And, of course, Buddy guards Sir Rowdy while I am on official duty as the boat greeter. It is about time the contributions of the TTPYC pets are recognized. And I bet there are more unsung heroes out there that I may have

missed. So next time you are cruising, remember to show your appreciation.. a little extra dinner wouldn t hurt anyone! Bandit P.S. Buddy and I like tuna!

Social Committee Joan Marie Van Gasken, Chair Summer is here, and so is Mid Sound Summer Social! The series starts July 11 th and runs through August 15 th. For those of you who are new to TTPYC, Mid Sound Summer Social is a series of Thursday evening, fun, relaxed rules races followed by a dockside party which helps to raise funds for The Des Moines Food Bank and Hospitality House (South King County s only women s shelter). By making a $5 donation, sailors get a chance to win one of many great prizes including haul outs at CSR, a beer tasting for six at Elliot Bay Brewing Company, a Lowe s gas grill, a complete sailing course valued at $295 from Seattle Sailing, $50 gift certificates from Fisheries, hats from KAM Gear, a one month gym membership from Normandy Park Athletic, restaurant certificates from Arturo s Mandarin Kitchen, the Milton Tavern, the 909, the Mark, Great Harvest Bakery, Oh Chocolate, and the Tin Room, as well as guest moorage from the Port of Bremerton and Arabella s. Remember, the more you donate, the better chances of winning a prize, so bring some cash or your checkbook.

3 No prior racing experience or handicap is required. However, please fill out the registration form, so we know how many boats to plan for and check to racing instructions for the course and basic rules (starboard has the right away). Serious racers start at 7:00 pm and casual sailors start at 7:05. To add to the fun we have included a few themes this year. July 11 is Pirate Night - Bring your pirate flag, and dress like a pirate if you like. July 18 is Red, White and Blue Fly your stars and stripes! August 8 is Anything Goes Kayaks, paddle boards or dinghies are welcome on a short course. August 15 is Hawaiian Night Wear your flower print shirt, a lei, and grass skirt if you dare. Minto Mingle Cruise Report June 15-16 2013 : Sunny skies and warm temperature greeted participants of this year s Minto Mingle held at Arabellas Landing Gig Harbor.

4 Minto Mingle Cruise Report June : Sunny skies and warm temperature greeted participants of this year s Minto Mingle held at Arabellas Landing Gig Harbor. The boats that attended this year s event were Mapril June, TNT (on loan to Cherokee which is being repaired), Brigadoon (the new), Sir Rowdy, Too Fat to fly, and Cal T-2 (Didn t catch the new name. Sorry). We had a number of boats visit for part of the day and it was great to see them turn out. Cygnus Argent (Tom Sitterley), CANUSA ( Ken and Sue Wilson with Bob and Janet Witters), and Rose and Orv Edmiston and Steve and Shiela Luengen dropping by to say Hello. We had a pretty good turn out with 6 Minto s and 11 skippers racing the Northwest corner of the harbor. That was where the wind was best. Shifty wind conditions taxed every ones patience, but we did have steady winds all day. We had Three visitors join in on the fun this year. Kemp Jones from Seattle on the Laura T and Peter Galinas came by car and,of course, last year s winner from Australia, James Judd. It was great to see all of these people again, as they are all big fans of past Minto Mingles. And Kemp Jones missed some of Saturdays and Sundays races, but was doing very well in the races he did attend. Don Brame got in a few races on Saturday as well. We look forward to seeing them all next year. We had a lovely evening Potluck on the deck at the marina with sun umbrella tables and comfy chairs for all. Twenty-four people attending the potluck. It was very much like a being on the Mediterranean overlooking the harbor. We had a very pleasant and warm evening dinner. year. 6 Membership News Doug and Sharon Andrews, Chairs Samantha, The Sea Dog, Assisting TTPYC members, we are inviting you to share a little of yourself with the other members of the club. Each month the Barnacle is going to try and feature a member or two, starting with the members that have joined us most recently. With that said there are many older members, in the club longer, I am sure have some interesting tidbits about themselves or their boating life we all would like to hear. Some subjects to think about but certainly not limited to: *How did you get into boating, sail, power, other and where. *How many and what types of boats have you owned. *How did your boat or boats get their name. *What prompted you to join TTPYC. *Special trips you have taken or may recommend. *What is your favorite part of boating? *Helpful boating tip you could share. *Next on your horizon, trips, a new boat or just something to share. Please pick a subject or two to share with your fellow club members and send your short article, 2 or 3 paragraphs, to Kristie & Don, the Barnacle editors, K6352@aol.com and Doug & Sharon membership chairs, doug@highlandmistltd.com. Include the year you joined the club and a picture of you and your crew and or your boat would be fun to include in the article. 7 Susie and Steve Dix I had a hard time deciding what to write about. I thought I would write about how I learned to sail. I had cancer in For my reward, for radiation & Chemo I wanted to take sailing lessons from someone other than my husband. I am sure all the wives in the club can relate to that. I told Steve what I was going to do. I told him he could come along if he wanted to, we figured if we got certified by ASA we could go anywhere and charter a boat. I invited my best friend who was going through a divorce. My daughter decided she also wanted to come along. We were certified with ASA in Sailing & Cursing by the time we were finished. They sent us books ahead of time to study. We went to Ft. Lauderdale were we met up with our instructor. We were on a 43-foot Gibb Sea. There were 4 cabins & 2 heads. It was a wonderful boat and we were out for a week. We sailed from Ft Lauderdale to Key Largo. We were assigned different jobs each day by the end of the cruise we knew how to do it all. Each morning we would have a written test. We learned how to navigate, check the engines, provision the boat, tend sails, be helmsman, and we practiced docking the boat, and tying knots. We even did man overboard drills. We sailed in the intercostal going down to the keys. On the way back, we went out into the Gulf Stream. It was one of the best trips. I love sailing and hope to do a lot of it this summer before we head back to Florida. I recommend taking sailing lessons from a professional rather than your husband. That doesn t mean there will be less yelling though. It is hard to have 2 captains! Susie Dix

Local Sailors Inducted into Hall of Fame The National Sailing Center and Hall of Fame (NSHOF) have revealed the ten individuals that will make up its 2013 class of inductees into the National Sailing Hall of Fame. Following a two-month period this spring during which sailors from all corners of the country nominated their choice for induction, a selection committee made up of representatives from US Sailing, the sailing media, the sailing industry, community sailing, a maritime museum, a previous inductee, and the NSHOF Board reviewed the broad spectrum of nominations. Inductees are American citizens, 45 years of age or older, who have made significant impact on the growth and development of the sport in the U.S. in the categories of Sailing, Technical/Design and Contributor (coach, administrator, sailing media). Nominations of non-citizens were also considered if they influenced the sport in the U.S., and posthumous nominations were also accepted. The undertaking to recognize Americans who have made outstanding contributions to the sport of sailing is central to the mission of the NSHOF which was formed in 2005 and has completed phase one of its plan to establish a permanent facility on the historic waterfront of Annapolis, Maryland. The 2013 class of inductees will be formally celebrated at the official Induction Ceremony at 1:00 p.m. on Sunday, October 27, The Induction, which is open to the public, will be held at the Annapolis City Dock site of the National Sailing Center and Hall of Fame adjacent to the U.S. Naval Academy.
