1 The Barnacle July 2011 Three Tree Point Yacht Club is an affordable family boating club that promotes enjoyment, appreciation, and care of the waters of Puget Sound. TTPYC Calendar of Events 2011 July 4 Tramp Harbor Cruise and Fireworks 7 Mid Sound Summer Social 14 Mid Sound Summer Social 16 TTPYC Double Handed Race 21 Mid Sound Summer Social 28 Mid Sound Summer Social August 4 Mid Sound Summer Social 11 Mid Sound Summer Social The Commodore's Corner The Premier summer sailing event of the Sound-Sound is starting this Thursday, Debra Valpey and many volunteers have plans in place for the Mid Sound Summer Sailing Social. The 6 week series of casual racing, charity, and socializing start July 7 th, at 7pm. Warning is at 6:50 pm. Bring your friends and have a blast. If you want to participate but don t want to use your boat, just show up at the fuel dock at 6pm, and you can get on a boat. Feel free to come to the after race event, even if you can t get on the water. Check the for all the details. Make sure to invite other boaters who might want to be part of the TTPYC club. This is a great opportunity to expose them to the group and what we are all about. Other notable events are the Boats-for-Beds. Thank you to all the skippers, crew and family that helped. Held this past week, it was a HUGE success, with more money raised, more fun, and more participants that last year. Rumor has it that some boats are already sold for next year make this charity event a total success. See article later in Barnacle. Our social calendar just gets better and better. How could you have missed the Ukulele and home-brew social event last month, unless you were out of the country, you should have been there. Tell Joan how much you appreciate her enthusiasm and great ideas. We are looking for next years social chairperson. You will get lots of help with ideas, so don t worry about that, just bring your enthusiasm. Great job Joan

2 The TTPYC has in its ranks some of the best performance sailing boats and crews in the region. This past month Pat Stewart and the Crew of Cherokee were recognized with a standing ovation at the Swiftsure International Awards presentation for his many many years of outstanding performance and participation in the yearly event. Having raced myself several times with the Cherokee crew, under the tactical and competitive direction of skipper Pat, I know that he is a worthy competitor. Pat has participated as crew or skipper in 38 of the last 39 Swiftsure races, and has wins in 7 of the past 9 years. This is a photo of Pat and Rosemary accepted First Place (again) for Division G, first place in Class 4, and 2 nd Overall for the 2010 Cape Flattery Race. Nice Job Pat and the Cherokee Crew. Cruise Corner Cruise Co-Chair Malcome & Katie Grothe GigHarbor The Month of June started with a bang with two cruises back to back. The first cruise was to Gig Harbor and we had glorious sunshine and warm temperatures. Saturday s events started with the parade which yielded high quantities of candy being tossed by virtually everyone in the parade. I ve never gotten this much candy during my prime trick or treating days. At 1:00 we had the rowing contest to the opposite side of Gig Harbor, followed by Minto races. We had 6 Mintos of all vintages represented and it was interesting to see the evolution of the Minto which was first built by this boatyard. Minto hull number 5 was there and it was much heavier and crude than the later models. There was an Eddon boat Minto there that had a non-stayed mast with the sail being a sleeve (no halyard) model. The wind held steady out of the North all day at 7-9 knots

3 for some good racing. We brought together 3 non club boats from Kent, Seattle and Key Center so we got to meet some new folks. We toured the newly restored Boat shop (now a public park) and saw the restoration process of Thunderbird #2 underway. We enjoyed a great potluck on the boats and a rock concert on shore Saturday evening. Two very good bands played till dusk. Boats in attendance: Sloe Tango, Andromeda, Sweet Surrender, TNT, Cayuse, Hobbes, Cheers, Brigadoon, Mapril June, and Sweet chance. Minto Mingle Under doubtful weather reports for the weekend ten boats braved the elements to travel to Dockton Park on Vashon Island. We left Friday evening with sunny skies and warm temperatures, but ended the day with hard rain throughout the night. We had the whole docks pretty much to ourselves and woke up to gray skies and the threat of rain. Eight Mintos showed up with three of them from outside the club. Again some new faces appeared. One bloke from Australia (just arrived 48 hours earlier from Australia) called me Friday afternoon to announce that he had purchased a Minto 20 minutes ago and wondered if he could come to Minto Mingle. He had seen in Australia the You-Tube videos that Mike Ellis had posted a few years ago and determined that the Minto was the boat to buy and take back to Australia as a tender for his newly purchased Bob Perry 44 boat. He bought a sleeping bag and pillow at Sears (the only store he recognized) on the way to Vashon and slept in a borrowed van. Hats off to you James Judd. What an Aussie spirit he is. Well it did not rain on us during the races (six in all over two days) and it turned out to be not a bad weekend at all. A mix of wind from fresh to light made things interesting with some very close racing. After all the dust had settled Ron Moblo won first place honors with Susan Moblo and Mike Ellis tieing for second place. Mike Ellis had accumulated three firsts in a row on Saturday (more than any other Competitor) so he was awarded second place. Thank you Paul Jones (forever faithful) for bringing all the equipment to this event. 4 Cheryl Force who brought their boat by car from Key Center. Cayuse, Cheers, Sloe Tango, Irie (Mike and Patty Ellis new Tarten 37 ), TNT, Mapril June, Asylum, Brigadoon, CanUSA, and Tiburon. Ray Valpey has produced a fabulous video documenting both weekend events. This eleven minute video is so well done, clever and artistic. And he whipped it up while he was at the event. Thank you and hats off to Ray for and excellent video project. Now if I can only figure how to convert the dvd disc (which was produced on an Apple computer) to play on my Windows P.C.. Ron Moblo

5 Race Fleet Corner SHELLEY CONTI Race Fleet Captain GORDON KELLS-MURPHY Assistant Race Fleet Captain July is here and it is finally starting to look and feel like summer. My corn finally came up and will be ankle high by the fourth of July. Summer Series concluded on June 23 rd. The wind was great and the weather was warm! I ve got to hand it to Paul Jones, Phil Chin and their crew of many, who put together another great series. Congratulations to the winners. Dean Conti and crew on Chinook were first in A Class, and Mark Mannard and crew on Suddenly were first in Cruising Class. Complete results can be found on our web site. Although Boats for Beds is not officially under my committee, I would like to say everyone had a good time and we had (again) No Rain and Wind! I am sure there is a complete write-up on this event elsewhere in the Barnacle. Next on the schedule is the Mid Sound Summer Social. This has become our premier summer event. I really encourage everyone to come out and enjoy this great event and support our charities. The Double Handed Race is scheduled for Saturday, July 16 th. We will have a flying sail class, a no flying sail class. I encourage everyone to come out. There will be a fun party and awards after the event. Sign up early so we can make our plans. Everyone had a great day on the water and at the dinner afterward. All that fun and being able to raise money for a great cause, Hospitality House... it is a win-win for all! We want to thank all the captains who contributed their boats and our great race committee, Janet and Steve Sisson. At the end of the evening there were even rumors of folks trying to pre-sell their boats for next year...so if you missed the fun this year, you will want to plan early to join us next year!

8 Membership Doug and Sharon Andrews Co-Chairs We have 5 new members! And three more on the way! This is great! Keep up the good work! Remember word of mouth is the best advertising. As you talk with other boaters, share information about our club and invite them to visit our website for up to the minute information. Our website is a great tool for keeping current with what is going on in Des Moines and it encourages new members. If you need extra calendar cards, just let us know. Special Honor One of our TTPYC members was honored at this year's Swiftsure Awards Ceremony. Pat Stewart was honored for his participation in 38 of the last 39 Swiftsure Races and seven wins in the past nine years. Steve Foss was there and shared this report and photos. The next picture of Pat and Rosemary is the presentation for the Juan de Fuca Perpetual Challenge Trophy awarded for First Place in Division G, First Place in Class 4, and Second Place overall for the 2010 Cape Flattery Race. The event was attended by TTPYC members Rick and Mimi Redfield, Gordon Kells-Murphy, Phil and Barbara (B.J.) Chin, Bob Emery and Steve Foss. Tom Schatt was just waiting for the Barnacle and responded first... Oh Drat! They drained the Sound again, just when I was having a beer! But Ray Valpey had the most suggestions... "I'd rather be in my boat with a drink on the rocks, than in the drink with my boat on the rocks." "I'd rather be in the pub with a drink on the rocks, than..." "At least we didn't spill any oil." "NOW, how're we gonna get that oil spill equipment?" "You can spill your drink in the boat and spill your boat into the drink, but you can't spill your boat's oil into the drink" And Steve Puryear suggested... "Honey, what I said last night was let s have one more on the rocks!" Winners all!
