I am not sure if that is true, but just in case some of you may not have heard, here is how I got into sailing. Many years ago a friend invited me out to sail on a beautiful Puget Sound day that was warm and still as that moment when the conductor raises the baton. Not a breath of air in sight. We motored back to the dock and I decided that I was not all that fond of sailing especially when the sails don t even get unfurled. Years later we were invited out for an afternoon on Sloe Tango. This was different. A north breeze at 8 10 knots made the sails go pop as we came about. The water made a satisfying swishing sound on the side of the boat and gurgled aft of the stern. When I took the wheel I felt like a 15 th century explorer about to discover the world. The temperature was about 78 degrees. The view was outstanding. We saw the freighter in time to avoid it. And the beer was just the right temperature as we sat at the dock later that afternoon. Wow I thought, this is for me and so I soon afterwards bought a boat, took some sailing lessons, and then joined TTPYC. Why do I mention this story now? Because it demonstrates that sometimes when we take our non sailing friends out on our boats, they become boaters and even better friends in our club. We have this opportunity almost yearround here on the Sound, but the best time yet will be the six weeks starting July 9 th through August 13 th at the Mid Sound Summer Social. I hope all of us get a chance to take someone out on our boats this year and get them as excited about boating as we are. It doesn t hurt that we will also get a chance to raise some money and collect some food for Hospitality House and the Des Moines Area Food Bank. Mark your calendars and please come out and join in the fun this year. My Dad used to tell me the most failure prone part of an automobile was the nut that held the steering wheel. Just because my boat has all the latest electronic bells and whistles, the nut that holds the tiller has to remember to practice using them before they are needed. That goes for Crew Overboard drills and remembering to rotate duties with the Commadorable so we both can do each of the jobs of sailing a boat including docking and anchoring. How about changing the raw water pump impeller? Or proper procedure to call for help on the radio in an emergency? Now that summer is finally here let s remember to not get so excited at the thought of that summer cruise that we don t remember the basics. Please be safe. See you on the water, Tom Spohn
SOCIAL CORNER Peter Gelinas, Chairman My fellow TTPYC Golfers This is a quick reminder that the golf tournament is coming up fast!! It is set for the evening of July 14 th, at Riverbend golf course. Our first tee time will be at 6:30 so we should be off the course at 8:30 to 8:45. I would like to invite the entire membership to join us at the end of the round. You can gather at the end of the round to watch us finish, and then we will all socialize in the restaurant following. If you would like to play, and have not signed up, please give me a call as soon as possible so I can reserve you a tee time. Tom Brown See you on the links Breeders Theater Come join your fellow TTPYCers at E B Foote Winery on Wednesday July 15 at 6:30 pm to see the newest production by Breeders Theater, The Last Magician (and for appetizers and wine tasting). These plays by T. M. Sell are always winners. Go to to learn more about the play and about how to obtain tickets. See you there! Ray Valpey Crush Out Hunger July 18, PM Ric & Dianne Jacobson, owners of CorkyCellars have hosted the Corky Crush for the past eight years. They started this event to bring some fun to the community of Des Moines. This year they are adding a new twist by partnering with the Des Moines food bank to help Crush Out Hunger. In this time of business down turn the food bank is experiencing a forty percent increase in the number of clients they serve. What is the Corky Crush? Two person teams take their turn in a wine barrel to see who can stomp the most juice. There is a four minute time limit with each team member getting two minutes in the barrel stomping nineteen pounds of grapes. Think Lucy and you have an idea of how much fun this is. How can this help the Food Bank? This year teams are being asked to get pledges for the number of pounds of juice they stomp. (In the past the most has been 8 pounds) Monies raised will be donated to the Food Bank to help with the increased amount of help they are providing. How can you be involved? We are challenging you to have fun along with being part of the solution of helping the Food Bank and your community. Get a two person team from your business, church, family or service club. (Space is limited to the first 16 teams to register.) Pick up a registration packet. Get pledges from everyone you know. When will this take place? July 18th at 4 pm just before the parade. Where? In the CorkyCellars parking lot at Marine View Drive Questions? Contact Ric or Dianne at CorkyCellars or CorkyCellars@aol.com
MID SOUND SUMMER SOCIAL Pat Waters Vice Commodore The Mid Sound Summer Social is here! It will start the evening of July 9 th and run for six consecutive Thursdays, ending on August 13. Each evening s event will have a theme. The theme for July 9 th will be Show your Team Spirit. You will find the entry form and race/party instructions attached to this issue of the Barnacle. Please fill out your entry and send to Sue as soon as possible. You only need to fill it out once for the entire six evenings. We have found one or more major donors for each Thursday evening to provide funds for food and beverages. Please, when you get a chance, thank our major donors. They are; Cox Financial, Des Moines Marina, Clear Ahead Sailmakers, Quantum Sails, North Sails, Emerald Cove Catering, Dave s Dive Service and B & E Meats. In addition, we have a long list of prizes to be given out our raffled each Thursday evening event. This year we will be fundraising for Hospitality House and the Des Moines Food Bank. The individual goal is to raise $8,000 which will support four women through their three month program. The goal for the Des Moines Food Bank is to fill two vans with food. Certainly, worthwhile goals in these trying times! In a change from last year, we will be collecting food donations and money donations each Thursday evening of the event. It is not too early for you and your crew to go out and get donation pledges! If someone wants to make a donation directly to Hospitality House via a credit card, call Natalie at Two Ullman sail makers, Chris Winnard ( ) and Jeff Carson ( ) have offered to come down and sail with anyone who would like some help on Thursday evenings. Just give them a call! See you out on the water Thursday, July 9 th! If you have any questions, please give me a call. Have fun!! 3 Pat Waters RACE FLEET CORNER Tom Davis, Race Fleet Captain Jack & Jill Race Results 2009 I would like to thank Vannesa, Greg and Alex Zaputil for taking on the Jack and Jill Race. It was also nice to see Escape out. The Jack & Jill Race was held on June 13, After checking the race board at 09:00 for any changes / amendments, a brief skipper's meeting followed where race courses and starting sequence was discussed. A nice 6 8 knot southerly had filled prior to the start and held steady long enough to run 2 races. Afterwards, the boats in attendance continued on to C dock for a fun après race dock party. Thanks to Race Committee Alex & George. A great time was had by all! We call this SUMMER SERIES for a reason and that's because the brochure shows sunshine and 15 knot northerlies. That's exactly what we had last night and it was fun to be out on the water. It was also family night with Snake Eyes "The Family Cruiser" out with their extended family, Scott Wilson, on the helm. And ZZZAP, the ultimate family cruiser with Greg, Vanessa and Alex showing some great speed for the first race of their season. It was great to see Scott back out. It has got to be a year or more since I've seen him. I got a chance to talk to him in the bar and he and Sylvia have purchased a road bike and have been doing a lot of riding with a local group. I would like to thank Paul Jones and Phil Chin for a great race last night. We were whizzing around on Liberté so much before the race I didn't get to see who all was out on the Committee Boat but great job. By the way, it was Phil Chin's birthday yesterday. Happy Birthday Phil! 39 again?
We had 3 boats racing Swiftsure over the Memorial Day weekend and I would like to congratulate Pat Stewart and the crew of Cherokee for a first in their class and David Garman and Debra Lowell and the crew of Giant Slayer for a first place in their class. Great job you guys! The NOOD Regatta was held in Seattle on May 15, 16 and 17. The weather was great but unfortunately the wind was very light. Three Tree Point was well represented with Pat Water's Liberté getting a third in the C&C 115 class, Stuart Burnell and the crew of Tantivity with a second in the J109 class and David Garman and Debra Lowell getting a second place in the very well attended San Juan 21 class. Eli Tollin, Mike Stainsby, Jim Redmond, Stuart Burnell, Bill and Penny Walton and a number of good friends and I are heading up to Canada next week to compete in the Van Isle 360. This 545 mile circumnavigation of Vancouver Island has probably become the premier sailing event in the Pacific Northwest. Eli, Mike and I will be sailing on Night Runner and Jim and Stuart will be sailing on Jim Lowery's new C&C 115, Zorra. Bill and Penny are planning to cruise up the inside of Vancouver Island to help the Race Committee in a couple of races and be part of the fun. If you would like to keep an eye on the progress go to Have fun and we will swap stories when I get back from Canada. THE CRUISE CORNER Tish & Buzz Greenman Co Chair MINTO MINGLE 2009 The Minto Mingle Cruise to Dockton commenced Friday night on the Dock. All enjoyed a variety of tasty hors d eouvres and wine garnished with good fellowship and casual conservation. On Saturday a skippers meeting was held at 10AM and racing started by 11AM. We had 13 racers and 13 Mintos, this year the racing was conducted using a point system. After the first three races on Saturday, Susan Moblo was the clear winner with several racers tied for second place. A Potluck Dinner was held Saturday night in the Dockton shelter followed by a wine tasting. As usual a lot of good food and fellowship made for a great evening. Although Steve Puryear was not able to lend his expertise to the wine tasting this year the job was ably handled by Ray Valpey and Tom Brown. At bottle ten, everything started to taste alike, but our wine mentors were able to tell us the difference. A cozy bonfire, complete with roasted marshmallows, and the traditional S mores, followed that event. We had good breezes on Sunday morning and we were able to add two more races. After Five races each racer was able to throw out their worst finish and the low score was the winner. First Place: Second Place: Third Place: Fourth Place: Peter Gelinas Ron Moblo Susan Moblo Mike Ellis Fifth Place: Sixth Place: Seventh Place: Eighth Place: Pat Waters Ray Valpey Tom Brown Mike Lewis Other racers were: Neil Duet, Eric & Leanne Egge, Will & Zack Stigglebout and Rich Hazelton. Awards were presented after the racing on Sunday. A ribbon was awarded for first and second place in each heat. Prizes for the first three places overall were numerous. The Magazine, 48º North, represented by Rich Hazelton, generously donated a sweatshirt and two hats, Ron Moblo donated 3 bubble machines and the Jones family donated three bottles of really fine wine. The first four racers also received I Love my Minto T shirts donated by Mike Ellis. I love my Minto, too, but I didn t get a T shirt. Those in attendance were: Pete, Amy, Paul & Lily on Blue Moon, Paul & Carol Jones on Brigadoon, Tom Brown & Jeanne Walker on Eagle, Mike & Patti Ellis on Sweet Chance, Joe & Dorlean Thomas on Gecko, Pat & Sue Waters on Liberté, Dave Klein with guest Kevin Bradshaw on Misfire, Buzz & Tish Greenman on Prime Meridian, Ray & Debra Valpey on Sloe Tango, George & Daphne Thompson on Tracer, Ron & Susan Moblo on TNT, and David & Marilyn Jones with guests Robyn, David, Mark, Kim & Apollo on Asylum.
We also had a number of guests from out of the club who came for the Minto racing. There were the Neil Duets on Liquid Kryptonite, Greg, Vanessa & Alex Zaputil on ZZZap, Mike Ellis on Narnia, Eric & Leanne Egge and Will & Zack Stigglebout by land vehicles. THE GIG HARBOR CRUISE was a laid back and low key cruise this year. We had 6 boats raft up together in the middle of the bay. Cheers, Blue Moon, Tiburon, Crystal Morning, Sweet Surrender and TNT came for the day. Everyone went ashore on their own to take part in the festivities. There were lots of activities on shore for everyone and every age to enjoy. The bands at the Jerisich public dock were very enjoyable and of course the parade activities are always fun. Not to mention all of the food and craft booths. It was also wonderful to watch the tall ship Amazing Grace sail around the harbor with all of her sails hoisted. We all met on Brigadoon Saturday evening for a great potluck, lots of good food and conversation, and we set a record with 21 people on the boat, luckily the weather cooperated and there was room to move about. Sunday we watched the blessing of the fishing fleet and then everyone headed home, we were the last to leave due to our anchor being caught on something on the bottom of the harbor, we have no idea what was holding us, but whatever it was it didn t want to let loose. Happy Boating Carol and Paul Jones Fourth of July Cruise and Salmon Bake July 4th, 2009 KVI Beach Tramp Harbor, Vashon Island 5 The club will sail on over to Tramp Harbor for a Salmon Bake on the beach on Saturday, July 4th. Tom Spohn will rustle up the salmon and everyone else should bring a potluck accompaniment to the salmon and beverages of your choice. Following the barbeque on the beach the fleet will follow Andromeda back to Des Moines to watch the fireworks from the dock. Schedule: Saturday: 6:00 PM Gather at the beach and prepare a barbeque with something to share. Just before dark follow Andromeda back to Des Moines to enjoy the fireworks. We need to be cleared past the fishing pier prior to the fireworks preparation. Thus the plan is to head back to the marina by 8:00 PM Cut Here Cost: $10.00 per boat Send to: Tom Spohn Marine View Dr SW Burien, WA By: June 25th, Please Name of Boat: Length: Names of Attendees:
