1 View From the Bridge by Mary Matakovich, Commodore Ahoy Mates! Our Annual General Membership Meeting was a tremendous success! We had a full clubhouse, maxed to capacity. It was a great opportunity for all of us to meet, visit, eat great appetizers prepared by member Debbie Collins- Johnson, exchange stories and cast our ballots for the Slate of Officers for 2018 and for our proposed Constitution and Bylaw changes. I am honored to announce the 2018 SLYC Officers: (pictured above) Commodore Chris Barrett Vice Commodore Barry Stewart Rear Commodore Jim Gilletly Secretary Kristin Rasmussen Treasurer Ron Pigeon Port Captain Bret Clark Sail Fleet Captain Leanne Drummond Power Captain Mike Davis Cruising Captain Lettie Fuller Sr. Staff Commodore Ray Mattison Jr. Staff Commodore Mary Matakovich Director 1 Jana Barter Director 2 Ken San Filippo Director 3 Jeff Bucher 2017 Board members who should to be thanked for their service to the club as they will be leaving the Board are: Senior Staff Commodore Ray Hopkins, Secretary Melanie Cleveland, and Director Scott Erwin. Advertising Our updated Constitution and Bylaws will be posted on our website by the new year, thanks to our current Secretary Melanie Cleveland s work assisted by our Webmaster Michael Dobrzensky. Speaking of Michael, I am honored to announce that the Southern California Yachting Association (SCYA) has selected him for their SCYA Sportsmanship Trophy We all know why: he is such a great energizer/equalizer when it comes to everything: yachting, racing, procedures/protocols, volunteering, technology-related projects; the list is long as his seventeen years of service to our club. In February he will receive the award at the Annual SCYA Dinner and we will formally honor him at our 2018 Opening Day. Congratulations and thank you Michael for your distinguished service! Also, thanks to our Sail Fleet Captain Kristin Rasmussen, we honored our Racing Crews for the 2017 Racing Season at our First Annual Racing Season Dinner. It was a very exciting evening to present the awards, recognize our sailors achievements, share navigation tips (like Darrell s hand compass) and enjoy a delightful meal prepared by our members, Debi and Michael Testa. This was our culminating Wet Wednesday, hosted by Director Jeff Bucher. Speaking of recognition and thanks, we will be having our Annual Staff Appreciation Brunch on Dec. 3, to recognize our Staff who have worked well throughout the year to assist the Board with its work. Please join us to pay The San Luis Yacht Club 443 Front Street, Avila Beach At the foot of the Avila Pier P.O. Box 247, Avila Beach, CA

2 tribute to this great group of members. We could not have had this successful year without them. Please thank them when you see them; they are: Artist-in-Resident Georgina Pease Joan DeGasparis Boatmaster (SLO Sloop) Dan Pease Burgees Jeff Liberman Foghorn Editor Donna Ellison Historian Brian King Purser Angela Brokaw Quartermaster Jana Barter, Kate Corella Social Dorie and Tom Zwinger Terry Whitney Sunshine Kathleen O Neill Webmaster (Scuttlebutt) Michael Dobrzensky Board News: In my report at the General Meeting, I stated that during our 80th Anniversary Year Celebration, we continue to work on our club s objectives with emphasis on: improving port facilities, developing yachting, attracting visitors and benefiting Avila Beach. I will be presenting my report to the Port at their December Harbor Commission Meeting; this is a requirement of our lease with the Harbor District. We also continue to work with the Port on our Small Boat Program, thanks to the work of our Small Boat Committee. Our facility has been enhanced with the remodel of our restrooms. (We will be raffling off 20 bottles of wine to cover the last bit of expenses on this project. Winning ticket to be pulled at December Christmas Sing-along.) Our Racing Season had the largest number of races ever. Our Cruising Season had a full schedule of unique sailing trips. Our participation in community events increased. We are now sponsoring a Sea Vice Views by Chris Barrett, Vice Commodore A hoy! Now that the sailing season is over, sailors are thinking about the maintenance, repairs and upgrades we want to get done on our sailboats. Ruby Mae, my trimaran, could use some attention and Gusty, the Hobie Cat, needs several repairs after a full season of racing and testing my boat handling skills. I said testing my skills, not pushing the limits of the boat, because I have learned this year that I am the limiting factor when it comes to making Gusty go fast. It s not the boat, it s me. Despite having a well equipped and very fast boat, I m usually following the entire fleet around the race course at the regattas this year. The good news is that even when I was near the back of the pack in these races, I had the time of my life on this fast, powerful catamaran. My go-to 2 Scout ship. We are now hosting the training schedule at our clubhouse for the leads of the Junior LifeGuard Program. The Coast Guard Auxiliary are holding their meetings at our clubhouse. Operation Surf for our injured service men/women was hosted by our club for their Opening Day event. We are represented on the Friends of Avila Pier Board, the Avila Beach Civic Association, the Avila Valley Advisory Council, the County s Envision Avila strategic plan, the Port San Luis Harbor District. Our list is long because we are a very active, all-volunteer club. We are very proud to be an integral part of the Avila community. Remember to mark your calendar for the 5th Annual Polar Bear Plunge on January 1, 2018 at 1200 (noon). T-shirt proceeds go to the Friends of 40Prado, our county s homeless services center. Come and join in the fun with our Club s Polar Bear group, lead by Margie Hurd. Bring in the new year with a big splash! I want to thank you, our Board, and our staff for the privilege of serving you in the capacity of Commodore. It s been a very enriching and invigorating experience, especially because I have gotten to know and work with you. I look forward to my continued service as Junior Staff Commodore in this new year. My best to you, always, Mary excuse for not winning is that the west coast Hobie sailors are among the best in the world. In fact, of the top 5 boats at this year s North American Championships, are from Hobie Division 3 (California). I like to think I m learning and making Gusty go faster at every race. It s funny how the fleet standings don t really indicate that. Fast or not, I plan to try to keep her in top condition and make sure I m ready for the 2018 racing season. The bonus is that I like to work on boats. But who doesn t? So it s that time for all of us boat owners. Meanwhile, the SLYC club calendar for 2018 is finalized and was approved by the Club Board. The Time to Sign Up volunteer web pages are available to members for signing up to 2018 social and racing events. As always, the success of our Club depends entirely on member volunteers to be successful. Please sign up for those club events! Besides, as SLYC members, we all have an obligation to volunteer and support the club. If you need any help with the signup web page or the calendar, please contact Barry Stewart, our 2018 Vice Commodore. He should be able to help you. If he s not available, feel free to give me a call. Chris

3 Power Report by Jim Gilletly, Power Captain Greetings fellow SLYC Members. Just got back from the La Paz/Sea of Cortez island-hopping cruise! All who ventured were privileged with great accommodations both on land and sea. We had perfect weather and water, wonderful company, and an experience that will be remembered for a lifetime. Thank you Lettie Fuller for your time and expertise as our SLYC Cruising Captain. Your organizational skills are remarkable. Rear Commodore Report by Barry Stewart, Rear Commodore Ahoy SLYC. A special thank you to Commodore Mary Matakovich, She and Pete have been invaluable when someone is needed to access the Club for inspection, repair, or just a quick check on something. Although I have long known the basic construction characteristics, equipment and systems of our building, it is a relief when a minor item can be taken care of with a phone call. I hope to pass along much of this knowledge to the incoming 2018 Rear Commodore elect Jim Gilletly, and intend to remain involved in assisting him with maintenance and repair. Now that both bathrooms are operational, looking forward, the next project, already slated, is our canvass awnings replacement. The floors are going to be cleaned and treated Monday December 4, so access may be limited that day. We have also begun recruiting members for the next approaching item. (2018 or early 2018) when we plan to repaint our exterior walls and trim. This should be fun, and many members are qualified to assist in some way here, even if only to apply masking tape, or BBQ for the volunteers. My brother Jeff Stewart has promised to pressure wash the building as he has previously. Watch for updates in future Foghorn newsletters. My 2018 duties focus on recruiting and assigning tasks to flag members for activities at the club, and helping As for the SLYC Chase boat, I would like to personally recognize our volunteers, both skippers and crew, for performing with enthusiasm an professionalism during our Hobie Days Regatta and Avila Cup Racing Series. In no specific order, I would like to thank the following members: Rod Valine, Tommy Whitney, Dave Lipanovich, Melanie Topp, Bill Dyer, Wiley Poole, and Mike Davis. I would also like to give a special mention to Bob Cazier for skippering Chase for the 2017 Zongo Cup and for being our cannoneer for the 4th of July boat parade. Also, many thanks to Barry Stewart and Dan Pease for their expertise in assisting with the Chase boat maintenance. Last but not least, I would like to wish the best to our 2018 Power Captain, Michael Davis. It has been a pleasure to serve the SLYC as 2017 Power Captain. Happy Holidays to All! Jim maintaining their member in good standing status. Please take on more than required minimums and if possible avoid cramming your choices into the first half of the year. This will help us maintain our schedule in the later part of the year without cancelling any events. Each flag membership is required to avail themselves to the club at least two times per year in some way. The largest number of tasks are Friday social hour, brunches and dinners, but please consider other options. Perhaps an afternoon on the Cal Poly pier helping the race committee, or helping the boatmaster, cleanup day, Wet Wednesday hosting, Zongo Cup reception, Chase boat personnel, and so many things that come up unexpectedly. Time to Sign Up sheets on SLYC.org are scheduled for December 1 posting, so be sure to look for them. Ask any Board member for help if you need it. Our incoming 2018 Commodore elect, Chris Barrett, is a sailing man and has logged in many hours with the SLYC board of directors. His wife Elizabeth knows the club culture and calendar well and is ready to make 2018 enjoyable and successful on land an at sea. Please welcome them and help them in any way they ask. On the nautical front, we are looking forward to pulling Slo Sloop for her cleaning and maintenance this month, after Cuesta sailing lessons are complete. She will not be launched at Lopez lake this year and we will hopefully have her available for winter sailing at Avila. Your club boat committee will be meeting again soon and hopefully presenting the board and membership with tentative plans for an upgrade or fleet addition in the foreseeable future. Please be financially supportive of Slo Sloop if you wish SLYC to up her game, as that is a most important indicator of member sailing interest. If your sailing knowledge is a little rusty or unsure, we have members that can show you the ropes and evaluate your training and experience needs. Promotion of boating and sailing are core mission items. Nautically yours, Barry 3
