1 View From the Bridge by Barry Stewart, Commodore Ahoy SLYC members. Happy We hope all of you have paid your dues and signed up for some service obligations by now. We are entering the New Year with a fresh cruising calendar, race, clubhouse and social schedules being posted on our website. Weekly updates will continue through scuttlebutt s. If you are one of the few who does not have internet or smart phone access, please contact our Vice Commodore Jim for help signing up. We will try to make arrangements to keep you updated through other means. Subsequently, if the membership committee deems circumstance advisable and worthwhile, recruitment orientations may be held for 2019 flag memberships. Watch scuttlebutts and read carefully because there is a very specific procedure for sponsoring aspiring members, and exceptions are generally not available. Be prepared, and please do not sponsor any who will not likely be active members of our club. Many have sung the right tune to charm the committee, only to be seen sparingly and grudgingly, after being prodded into minimal member service commitments. In short, propose only those who will certainly be very active members, not just those who commit to the minimum. Also remember that many club activities welcome your guests with you, and that is sometimes a better option for the occasional and casual partakers in our events. The small boats have been removed from under the club, awaiting better seasonal conditions and Slo Sloop is available to members enrolled. Consider going for a local sail when conditions are favorable. Our boatmaster, Staff Commodore Bill Dyer attended to sloops annual port mooring gear service and inspection in mid December, and there will be another interval, sometime this year where the mainsail well be under minor repair. Updates will be posted on scuttlebutt when sail is removed and returned to boat. Weather and water levels permitting, we expect Lopez cup races to begin February 10, a week after the Superbowl. Please consider sailing or assisting in this winter activity. We are in the short day season right now, I have a few minor power boat activities planned, the polar bear potluck on January 1, 2019 and a day sail or two and will hope the Avila pier reopening comes to pass sooner rather than later. Stay tuned for further updates from the pier committee. There is some hope. I want to thank all our Committee Chairpersons, Board Members and Staff Commodores for continuing to help SLYC function, and we hope you will all make an extra effort to participate beyond the minimums this year. Lets make 2019 a safe, interesting, refreshing, memorable 82nd year for SLYC. 2 Vice Views by Jim Gilletly, Vice Commodore Ahoy and Happy New Year Fellow SLYC Members! I am honored to be your 2019 Vice Commodore and be of service to you throughout the year. My duties according to our SLYC Constitution, which we all should re-visit from time to time, are to assist the Commodore in the discharge of the Commodore s duties and to officiate in the Commodore s absence. The Vice Commodore will also coordinate the Club s calendar and volunteer assignments. Today, we are fortunate to have a wonderfully designed, very user friendly, SLYC Website. And Luckily, I have the support of our brilliant Webmaster, Michael Dobrzensky, to assist with our online calendar. As we all know, our club functions on our members contributions, not only from annual dues, but just as importantly, through the volunteering of our time, skills, and expertise. Our contributions allow us to have a historic and beautiful beach front venue, exciting sailboat races, sailing cruises to amazing destinations, fun and informative Wet Wednesdays, relaxing Social Fridays, and fabulous dinners and brunches provided by our Club s talented cooks and chefs. I think we all feel very fortunate to be SLYC members! On a closing note, we have had an excellent Time To Sign Up Sheet response, so far. If you have not yet scheduled your TTSU volunteer dates, please do so sooner than later. Let me know if you have any difficulties with the online volunteer sign up process. I ll be happy to assist you. Best wishes to you and your families! See you at the club or on the water, Jim h Sr. Staff Commodore Report by Mary Matakovich, Sr. Staff Commodore Ahoy Mates! I hope each and everyone of you enjoyed the holidays with friends and family, and I wish you all a very healthy and happy New Year. I hope you were able to join in the fun of the 7th annual Avila Beach Polar Bear Plunge on New Years Day Always a chilling experience! Always at your service! Mary h Avila Beach Polar Beach Plunge
