OPTIME Monday 29th October 2018 RECEPTION: STUDENT ABSENCE LINE: DEAR PARENTS & CARERS F irstly, I would like to congratulate all the pupils who attended the World War 1 battlefields trip to France and Belgium during the half-term break. We received many comments from members of the public about how thoughtful and respectful our pupils were. In the days before the 100th anniversary of the Armistice, we all have much to think about in terms of what we often take for granted. Next week, Ofsted will be visiting us as part of the pilot for their new inspection framework. There will be no report following it, but they will be looking at our curriculum, its impact and evaluation. We are one of three schools in the South West that have been chosen for this exercise and we are quite content to take part. In my opinion this change in the inspection framework plays to the College s strengths; we ve not chased results at Chulmleigh, but think we have been very successful as a result of focussing our efforts on ensuring our pupils leave with high value qualifications. We believe that in 2018, our pupils got the best EBacc results in the South West region for a mainstream comprehensive and were 24th nationally. This is a significant achievement by a small rural school, and has only been possible as a result of all the hard work and the application of skill by our pupils and staff. Mike Johnson, Executive Headteacher WOMANS PERFORMANCE A GREAT SUCCESS! T hank you to all the pupils, past and present, and families and supporters who attended the hilarious performance of 'Womans' by Scratchworks Theatre Company before half term. This was, I think, the 25th event for Chulmleigh - as promoters of Beaford Arts since 2009, and one of my favourites. You were a brilliant audience and I know you enjoyed the show: it really made me think about the term 'to give a performance'; those actors gave everything in terms of energy and creativity, to transport us back to Roman times. Special thanks to Steve Rickard for his excellent cameo role; that's what I call being a role model for your child! The Scratchworks women will be back in school on November 23rd to run a Devising workshop for the Y10 GCSE Drama pupils, which should be brilliant preparation for the their up and coming 40% coursework assessment. Look out for the next Beaford Arts show, which will I hope be in the spring. Just to let you know we are currently awaiting the outcome of a bid for funding to purchase, amongst other things, some rails so that we can use our staging to create raked seating for our audiences. Ms Feasey
CENTENARY TRIP TO THE WORLD WAR 1 BATTLEFIELDS O n a very dark and early Saturday morning of the half term holiday, a group of 30 Year 8s - Year 11s began a memorable journey to the World War 1 battlefields of Ypres and the Somme. This year is the centenary year of the Armistice, signed in November 1918, which made our visit all the more poignant. Despite a two-hour delay with Eurotunnel, we arrived in time to witness and participate in the daily remembrance ceremony at the Menin Gate, where some of our pupils laid a wreath on behalf of the College, to remember family members and people from Devon who fought in the war. Our second day was focussed on visits to important historical sites such as Langemarck German cemetery, Tyne Cot and Lijssenthoek Casualty Clearing Station, as well as experiencing a dug-out and trench network at the museum at Passchendaele. We were then on our way to the Somme in Northern France for two days, where we visited Theipval, the Lochnagar Crater and the Devonshire Regiment cemetery. What was particularly moving during this trip was that we were able to locate pupils relatives who had fought and died in World War 1, and this brought home the scale of the conflict and its impact on individual families. Speaking French and experiencing French culture was also an important aspect of this trip, especially the shopping and eating! Thank you to all the pupils and parents who supported this trip and made it memorable in so many ways. Dr McMahon FUNDRAISING SOLO PARACHUTE JUMP FOR YEAR 11 PUPIL! H uge congratulations to Year 11 pupil Zoe Dean who has completed her parachute jump to raise funds for the NDDH Cancer Wellbeing Centre! An incredibly brave achievement! Well done Zoe! Donations can be made via her Just Giving page below. Click here.
YEAR 11 PUPIL ELLA FRASER-SMITH BRITISH CHAMPION IN TWO SURF LIFE SAVING EVENTS! H uge congratulations to Year 11 pupil Ella Fraser-Smith who recently took part in the Open Surf Life Saving National Championships in Portreath. The competition was open to those aged 16+ and Ella was only just old enough to compete! She was pitted against the best competitors from all over the country, aged 16 to 60+, but mostly late teens to early 20s. Ella competed in a variety of events, both in the sea and on the beach designed to mimic some of the key skills needed by a surf lifeguard. These included a surf swim, board paddle, ski canoe paddle, sprints, various pairs and relay events and a 2km run. The highlight of the weekend was a victory in the 2km run, where she was crowned British Champion! The following weekend Ella competed in the IRB (Inshore Rescue Boat) Surf Life Saving National Championships in Exmouth, and having only just turned 16, it was her first time at the competition. Ella was a patient in this event which involved swimming out to sea and then being rescued by an IRB crew rather alarmingly scooped up by a motor boat moving at speed and thrown in to the boat before being returned to shore. The day was a huge success for Saunton Surf Life Saving Club, and Ella came away with three Bronze medals and a Gold - which means she became a British Champion in two surf life saving events on consecutive weekends! Ella is also a keen runner and represented Devon at the English Schools Cross Country Championships when she was in Year 9, and hopes to be able to repeat that again this year. Ella is pictured with her sister Laura, who also competed in the open event. SUCCESS FOR COLLEGE EQUESTRIANS! C ongratulations to Grace Sinclair, Lucy and Scarlett Vaux who recently represented the College at the National Schools Equestrian Association, National Championships in Bedfordshire. The girls all did extremely well, achieving 5th place out of 29 teams in the arena eventing cm jumping with style. In this event, the girls had to jump a round of show jumps and then go straight on to a round of cross-country style jumps. Teams usually have four members with only the best three scores counted, so they all needed to be at their best! Grace came an individual sixth in this competition, and in the elite 120cm show jumping she was 5th Well done to them all, a great team effort!

PAYING FOR TRIPS AND ACTIVITIES THE EASY WAY! This is a reminder that you can pay for trips and activities online in the same way that you pay for school meals. It is quick and easy, and helps us by keeping our costs down. The online payments system is called Squid and for ease we have included instructions to follow (with screenshots). SQUID ONLINE PAYMENTS The Academy s preferred method for paying for trips and activities is via portal.squidcard.com Trips and Offers Purse (which will remain in that purse until you allocate it to a trip or activity at a later date). Should you have any queries regarding squid, please contact squid customer services on customerservice@squidcard.com (quoting your SRN number)
HOW TO PURCHASE A TRIP OR OFFER ON YOUR SQUID ACCOUNT Logon to your squid account via portal.squidcard.com which will connect you to your squid home page. Each registered child will have a separate tab that shows your child s SRN (squid registration number) and display name. You are able to move between children by clicking the pink tab. Underneath the orange Trips & Offers icon is a link that informs you how many trips and offers are available to your child. (our example shows 25 offers available) Should you use the Topup facility on the Trips and Offers purse, please be aware that the money will only be allocated to a trip or offer once you have completed the steps below by selecting a specific trip/offer, place it in your basket and going through the check out process. Please click the link 25 offers available to show which trips and offers are currently available. Select which trip/offer you wish to purchase by clicking on Add to basket. Your basket details will show in the top right hand corner of the page. By clicking on View basket you will be shown your basket contents.
Click on Checkout which will provide you with an offer summary. To complete your purchase, you must click Checkout and proceed to add payment details. Please be aware that your purchase will not be complete or confirmed to the school until you have completed the Checkout process. Should you have a stored payment card on your squid account you will be given the option to use that card for payment. Should you choose this option within the payment process you will be asked to confirm the 3 digit CVV number from the stored card that is being used to make payment.
