MLC Aquatic June, 2018 President s Report There have been so many events in the last couple of months with brilliant results and I am incredibly proud of everybody! I love watching everybody together at Club Championships and being reminded of a long time ago how little my kids were getting up on those blocks! I am also sad that after 11 years I have attended my last National Age competition! Unfortunately, this wasn t confirmed until after the competition finished but I have been incredibly blessed to be involved with the National Age competition for so long and had wonderful support from coaches and parents over so many years. I am very pleased that my last National Age was probably the best in terms of overall results for the Club and also a wonderful social occasion for the parents who were all able to sit together, cheer together and dine together for the whole week! I need to thank MLC College and the coaches who support a team trip away and to our parent volunteers who act as team managers also staying with the team. Of course, our swimmers are amazing and supportive and a pleasure to watch! I was also very pleased to attend the Swimming Victoria awards afternoon last weekend where Nick Veliades and Phil Clark were rewarded for their hard work with an award each: Coach Nick - award for placing an athlete (or 2) on an Australian team. Coach Phil received a Victorian Age Group Special Coaching Achievement at Australian Age Championships award.
President s Report There is immense power when a group of people with similar interests gets together to work toward the same goals. Katrina Schlicht Club President Important Dates: MLC Meet 4 August compulsory for all swimmers and parents (volunteer roster coming soon) Club Night Friday 7 September to 7.00pm - For all development, junior, nippers and learn to swim with help and exhibition swims from State, National and Performance squads Surrey Park SC Meet (all squads) MLC SC Meet (all squads) Nuna SC Meet (perf, nat, state, dev) MSAC MSAC MSAC 21 July 4 August 18 August Vict Age SC Champs (all qualified) MSAC 30 August Vict Open SC Champs (all qualified) MSAC 15 Sept State Team Competition (selected) Canberra 28 Sept Ringwood Meet (State, dev, junior) MLC LC Meet (all squads) Ringwood MSAC 14 October 20 October Congratulations to Amelia Blake, Alannah Torrance, Noah Millard, selected to represent Victoria at the School Sports Competition in Hobart from July.
Off the back of a very successful long course season the final results at All Juniors and both Open and Age Nationals were fantastic for the club as a whole. Everyone should be proud of their efforts throughout the season as this level of success only comes about from months of hard work. As we roll into a new season it is a good time to relax and enjoy a different mindset / approach to training. This time of the season is about making changes, developing skills (turns and underwater kicking) and setting up your approach for the rest of the year. Looking forward into the Short Course Season staying HEALTHY is one of the key challenges for all athletes. There are some simple steps to follow to ensure individuals are healthy and that swimmers are not spreading any illness amongst their squad peers. 1. Eat healthy - Eat your greens (yes Ryland that means you too!!!) 2. Dress appropriately - Keep warm (before and after training sessions), this includes your head & FEET 3. Maintain good sleep patterns & adequate amounts of sleep each night 4. If you are sick communicate with your coach and depending on what you have stay away from training, so you don t spread it around your squad. Good luck for the season. Nick Veliades Head Coach Since the last newsletter, we have had the main swimming events for the year pass with lots of racing both for club, individual and school glory. There have been achievements in both metro, state and national and even international participation. Many of us were lucky enough to enjoy the amazing spectacle and spirit of a home Commonwealth Games. This experience bought immeasurable inspiration to our young swimmers, wondering just what might be possible, with hard work and application. The Age National Championships were a highlight with by far MLC Aquatics best performance ever. The athletes had a total of 100 individual swims and 12 relays, 49 of the 100 individual swims and 10 of 12 relay teams qualified for finals finishing top 10 in Australia. That s a total of 59 top tens, over 50% of our swims which is more than double last year s tally. The Medal tally for the week stood at 12, consisting of 3 gold, 6 silver, and 3 bronze medals. Thank you to the coaches for all their hard work in the lead up to this event. Club champs were enjoyed by all as was the presentation night and particularly the wonderful speaker, Bronte Barratt. We now move onto the short course season and enjoy the school holidays! Caroline Hunt-Smith Editor
Introducing Bronte Barratt our special guest speaker from presentation night! (A full wrap up of Presentation Night in the next issue) Bronte was a member of the Australian Swim team from 2005 until 2016, not missing selection onto a national team throughout this entire period. On her debut as a 16 year old she won a silver medal as part of the 4x200m freestyle relay at the World Championships in Montreal. Bronte made the 2006 Commonwealth Games team whilst completing grade 12 at St Margaret s in Brisbane. Since then she has competed in 5 more Worlds Championships, 2 more Commonwealth Games and 3 Olympics. Bronte won a Gold medal at the 2008 Olympics in the 4x200m relay, where they broke the World record by 6 seconds, a silver in the same event in London as well as an individual bronze medal in the 200 freestyle. She backed this up with a silver medal in the 4x200 relay at the Rio Olympics and managed to swim a PB in her last ever race for Australia in the final of the 200m freestyle. Bronte retired from swimming after Rio and now works as a Radiographer at Brisbane Private Hospital.
Another great weekend of racing for MLC with the semi finals and finals of the Metro All Junior competition on 7 and 8 th April. Of the 19 who qualified to swim the semis, 14 made their way through to today's finals. With too many pbs to count, MLC finished the meet with 13 medals. Congratulations to all of you. Medallists are as follows: Mitchell Nell - Gold 10yr Back Amelie Blake - Gold 11yr Back Alannah Torrance - Gold 11yr Breast, Gold 11yr Free, Silver 11yr Butterfly Angus Lim - Bronze 12yr Butterfly Matiss Dalins - Silver 12yr Breast Toby McOmish - Silver 13yr Free Jo Stathoulis - Gold 14yr Breast Dominique Moloney - Silver 14yr Free Will Drew - Bronze 14yr Free Riley Mitchell - Gold 14yr Butterfly, Silver 14yr Free
2018 GHF Australian Age Championships Recap This year we took a team of 27 athletes to Sydney for the 2018 Australian Age Championships. It was a strong team with a lot of big personalities that made this one of the most enjoyable trips we ve ever had. Between our 27 swimmers we had a total of 112 races swum throughout the week. While this may seem like a lot, these numbers were quite low compared to some of our competitors. But it was what we did with our swims that counted. We finished the week with a whopping 59 top 10 placings more than half of our swims. On top of that we brought home 12 medals 3 gold, 6 silver (including 2 relays), and 3 bronze. In terms of percentages we outshone every other club. Other clubs beat us simply because they were bigger than us. But as a small club we held our own and proved what we are capable of, finishing 6th overall in Australia, and 2nd in Victoria behind Nunawading. A huge shout out to the girls who finished 3rd in overall female point scores, and 1st in Victoria. Congratulations to everyone in the team for such an exciting and successful week. From the insane individual and relay racing to the competitive ping pong games and everything in between, this was undoubtedly an experience we won t forget. I can t wait to see who will be part of the team next year! One of the best things about the MLC Aquatic team is the cheer squad! Tasmania Trip Tassie State Championships is a meet that was hyped up for months and months beforehand. The meet has a reputation among seasoned competitors as being a super fast, competitive, and all round amazing opportunity for swimmers to compete at an interstate level. The atmosphere of the meet is unlike any other, and is a huge part of what makes this meet so successful. This was my first year in Tassie and it completely exceeded my expectations. This year we took a team of 23 athletes aged down for the long weekend, along with their families and myself. For many, this was the first real taste of interstate level competition, made even more exciting by a huge number of other interstate swimmers also making the trip.
Tassie has always been seen as a last chance meet to qualify for Australian Age Championships, particularly for those chasing their first national times. This year did not disappoint in the slightest. Well done to Hamish Bowden (200 fly), Will Drew (200 IM), James Lloyd (200 IM, 100 fly, and 50 free), and Domi Moloney (100 free) for achieving a number of new qualifying times, adding to their already busy programs. An extra special congratulations goes to Matiss Dalins (100 and 200 breast) and Tom Hay (50 and 100 free) for achieving their first ever national times, as well as Riley Mitchell (100 free and 100 fly) for qualifying for his first nationals with an MLC cap. Away from the pool, the highlight of the meet was definitely the team aspect, spending a weekend with some great personalities and getting to know everybody in a more relaxed setting. Parents and swimmers alike bonded over a couple team dinners and a mutual obsession with swimming and it undoubtedly brought the team closer together. All in all, Tassie this year proved to be a hugely successful meet, and a lot of fun for everyone involved. 4 days, 11 new national times, 2 first time national qualifiers, and an extraordinary number of PBs. I couldn t be prouder, and I can t wait to do it all again next year. Warrnambool Trip A team of 10 MLC athletes and their families took a drive down to Warrnambool this weekend for the Warrnambool Swimming Club's annual Queen's Birthday weekend meet. This meet has a long standing reputation of playing host to some extraordinary racing and a fantastic atmosphere. I've come to this meet many times, and this year didn't disappoint. Our team this year was less than half the size of last year's, but we had an absolute blast. Overall MLC finished 6th out of the 30 clubs in attendance, matching last year's result. Even more impressive, every member of the team contributed to the tally. We finished the meet with 62 pbs, 12 new state times, and one first time qualifier. Congratulations to Katelyn O'Keeffe for qualifying for her first State Short Course Championships, achieving the 100 fly and 100 IM state times. Thank you to the whole team for an amazing weekend. I know everyone really enjoyed themselves. I can't wait to do it all again next year with a bigger team! Jayden Brian State Coach
