Cupertino Hills Swim & Racquet Club Swim Team Handbook Summer 2013 Rommy Zapp Swim Team Head Coach & Club Manager Sharks Swim Team Committee

Welcome to the CHSRC Sharks Swim Team! We are a group of parents and swimmers dedicated to providing a fun and supportive team environment, healthy competition, and improving young swimmers swimming technique. The objectives of the Cupertino Hills Sharks swim team program are: To create a positive and supportive team environment where team members are inspired to strive and excel. To emphasize technique, development & conditioning through consistent participation. To develop our swimmers competitive skills. To create life-long swimmers. Eligibility Any boy or girl 18 years old or under on May 31 who is a CHSRC member can join the Sharks Swim Team. League rules state that children in the 6 & under group must be able to swim 25 yards (1 pool length) by the first swim meet to participate in meets. The Head Coach will work with all swimmers to meet that requirement. Registration Information Swimmers sign up for the team either by attending the Sign-Up Day/Ice Cream Social in March or registering at the club office. The 2013 registration fees are: $172 for the entire season ($102 for High School). Families pay $162, $152 for the third and fourth child respectively. The registration process includes signing up for meet jobs and social events. Since meets are run solely by volunteers, each family is needed to work at least six swim meet jobs and two social events. A buy-out option is available for families who are unable to participate. (See Parent Responsibilities for more information.) Registration fees pay for up to five days per week of swim team coaching, the Practice Meet and Pasta Feed, five summer dual meets, the championship meet, swim team sponsored socials, Sharks t-shirt, and the awards ceremony. Fees are not prorated. Fees, meet, and social jobs are waived for swimmers who are graduating seniors or have graduated from high school and are eligible to swim. Swim Team Committee The swim committee is run by swim team parent volunteers and the swim coach. Committee meetings are held once a month from January through August and are open to all swim team parents. We welcome all members to our meetings! Gear: suits, T-shirts, sweats, goggles, caps, etc. The recommended gear for team members is the team suit. The team suit is selected by a committee and remains consistent for two swim seasons. The team suit and other team clothing (t-shirts, sweats, goggles, and swim caps) are optional and can be ordered at the sign-up meeting. One Sharks t-shirt per swimmer is included with registration fee. Clothing may also be available for purchase during the season in the concession stand at home swim meets. 2

Competition Junipero Serra Swim League The league was formed in the early 1970s by parents and coaches from Eichler, Greenmeadows & Laurelwood. The following teams make up our league: Brookside, Greenmeadows, Saratoga Woods, Eichler, Laurelwood, and Cupertino Hills. Each team has a JSSL Liaison who represents their club. Age Groups A swimmer s age as of May 31st determines the age group that he/she competes in during the season. He/she must swim in two dual meets to swim in the JSSL Championships. The age groups are: 6 & under, 7 & 8, 9 & 10, 11 & 12, 13 & 14, & 15 to 18. Meet Procedures Home and away swim meets start at 9:00 AM. Swimmers should arrive at 8:00 for home meets and 8:30 for away meets to check-in, get settled and warm up. Swimmers should find and record their heat and lane assignments and check in at the Clerk of the Course before their events. Swimmers typically join their friends or stay with their family and watch the meet together. Parents should check in with the Volunteer Coordinator upon arrival. Plan to watch and enjoy the meet while re-establishing summertime friendships in between meet jobs. Useful items for swimmers to pack include two towels, a sleeping bag/blanket, sweatshirt and pants, quiet games, light snacks and water. Label your possessions to avoid mixing them up with other families belongings. Families will want to bring chairs, sunscreen, hats or visors and reading material! All clubs sponsor a cash-only concession stand with breakfast, lunch, and snack items. Please help us to maintain positive relationships with other clubs by reminding kids to be courteous and respectful at meets and to help clean up any litter. Meet Scoring The winning club is determined by adding points given to its swimmers that place 1st, 2nd or 3rd in each event. The points for each place are: First = 5, Second = 3, Third = 1. Though children receive ribbons for placing 4th, 5th & 6th, their team does not receive any points. 1st place in relay events wins 7 points for the team. In the JSSL Championships, points are given for 1st through 6th place (9, 7, 5, 3, 2 and 1 respectively). Meets Our season is comprised of "Dual Meets" (meets between two teams) and the "Championship Meet" (all teams compete in all strokes). The Junipero Swim League meets each year to determine the competitive schedule. 3

Your arrival time for warm-ups, and meet start times follow: Home Meets: Arrive at 8:00 for warm-ups; meet runs 9:00 to about 12 noon. Away Meets: Arrive at 8:30 AM for warm-ups; meet runs 9:00 to about 12 noon. Championship Meet: Arrive at 7:30 AM, meet runs 9:00 to about 3:00. Practices See the Sharks Swim Team Calendar & Events schedule below for practice times. Practice times are grouped by age. With coach s approval, swimmers may practice at alternate times. Duration and emphasis in the practice sessions will vary depending on the swimmer s age group. Swimmer's Responsibilities Practice: It is highly recommended that swimmers attend at least 3 practices a week and they are encouraged to attend all 5 practices if possible. The coaches have seen a direct correlation between attendance and swim meet performance. Meets: Swimmers are expected to attend as many meets as possible, but sometimes vacations and other events conflict. So, it is essential that swimmers inform the coach by the Wednesday before the meet if they are not able to attend a swim meet. Swimmers must sign up for their events by Wednesday 6pm prior to each meet. Sign up sheets are located on the office window. Relays are assigned the day of the meet by the coaches. Swim assignments will be posted at each meet. Swimmers must swim in two dual meets to swim at the Champs Meet. Be On Time: Get to the meets at the required time so that you can warm up with the rest of the team and report to the Clerk of the Course. Be Positive & Supportive: Treat your teammates and opponents with encouragement, praise and courtesy. Act in a positive way in both winning and losing. Keep Track Of Your Times: It is recommended that the swimmers keep a log book (see back of book) with a list or chart of their race times and ribbons so that they can see their times improve over the season. Have Fun: Although it is very important to take practice and competition seriously, it is more important that swimmers are having fun. There are appropriate times for working, focusing and listening and there are others for letting your hair down. Don t mix them up. If you are not having fun, ask for your coaches support to make it fun. Parent s Responsibilities Jobs at Meets: Every swim meet requires volunteers to run the event. Each family is needed to work at least six swim meet jobs and two social events or pay the buy-out fee to the team to pay high-school students to do the jobs. The 2013 job buy out fee is $150. This does not include/cover the Practice Meet, Champs Meet or Social events, which all families must work. You will be required to work The Championship meet, even if you bought out for the dual meets. Working at meets is fun and provides a great opportunity to work side-by-side with other swim team parents. It is also great way to watch the meet. You will typically be working half of each meet you sign up for (unless you wish to do more). 4

Meet Jobs are: Meet Director Meet Set-Up Announcer (requires training) Starter (requires training) Stroke & Turn Judge (requires training) Recorder/Timer Timers Runners Meet Data Management/Table Workers (Scoring/Ribbons) Concessions There is a training session in May for all adult volunteers as well as instruction at the Practice Meet. Schedules and volunteer lists are ed by the Volunteer Coordinators prior to each meet. If you cannot keep your commitments, it is your responsibility to find your own substitute or you will be assessed a buy-out fee of $25 per meet job missed. Awards Ribbons: The swimmers win ribbons for placing 1st through 6th at the dual meets and for placing 1st through 12th at the JSSL Championship meet. The ribbons are placed in swimmers folders in the swim team file box outside the manager s office. Swimmers can pick them up at the next practice. Trophies & Awards: Participation trophies are given to everyone on the team. Other awards include Swimmer of the Year, Coaches Inspiration, Most Improved, and Most Personal Bests. These awards are given to a boy and girl in each age group by the Sharks coaches pursuant to guidelines provided by the Committee. Team trophies are given at the championship meet to the team that has the best dual meet record, and to the team with the highest number of points at the championship. High Point trophies are given to the boy and girl in each age group for earning the most points at the dual and championship meets. Club Records: Team records for each stroke and age group are displayed at the club on the display board in the entryway. Sharks Swim Team Calendar & Events: Sunday, March 24 Registration and Ice Cream Social: 1 3 PM Sign ups will take place at the club. Come and celebrate the opening of the swim season. Register your swimmers and sign up for your volunteer positions. Order bathing suits and team clothing.
