Many of us were competing in individual swims or may have participated in the Relays that were held on the Sunday. As usual there was a great atmosphere and lots of cheering to encourage our team mates on. You could also see the nerves and fear in the swimmers as they were waiting for their races to begin. As a Club we achieved some fantastic results with lots of medals, a huge amount of PB s and even National qualifying times. STARplex Swim Club were lucky enough to receive an Honourable Mention Award for 2016/2017 Club of the Year. As Club Captains we were lucky enough to be able to accept this on behalf of the Club. Sammy Starfish made an appearance on Relay Day during the official March on. Sammy was a great hit and made us stand out from the other clubs. Thanks Jessi for helping us out and putting up with the heat. It was great to see some new faces swimming for the Club. We hope everyone had an exciting time like we did. Thanks to the Coaches for being there for us, as always and of course to all our parents who have the wonderful task of transporting and supporting us during the long week. We now work need to work hard so that we can compete in the 2018 Short Course Championships. See you there. The second was the male S14 multiclass South Australian record for the 50m backstroke in a time of 48.28, also a National Age qualifying time. A special mention to Austin Grigg who also broke the existing record and qualified for the National Age Championships in the male S14 multiclass 50m backstroke, in a time of This is not an official record, as Aiden competed in the same heat. Austin and Aiden have also qualified for the National Age Championships in the 50m freestyle. Congratulations to Mia N for qualifying for her first National Age Championships in the 200m breaststroke. Congratulations also to Maddi K for achieving her National Age time in 100 breaststroke.
3 P A G E 3 Coach s Corner Congratulations!! Firstly, I would like to congratulate every swimmer who participated in the State Championships from the 16-21st of January. It was a successful week for our club as we had many medallists and finalists throughout the week. There were plenty of races where massive chunks of time were dropped from pbs which was an impressive feat considering how hot and draining it was being inside the swim centre. Everyone managed themselves exceptionally well with the weather and the long week as amazing performances were maintained all the way through to the last session. This shows me that the training and preparation throughout the season paid off. Congratulations team! February Birthdays 10th Aiden H 17th Darcie 17th Naliah 20th Matt R 25th Mikayla T HAPPY BIRTHDAY!! As always, the championships revealed who has been consistently working hard in training week in week out. Consistency is the key to succeeding in swimming as it is in every sport. The best athletes only become the best through consistent hard work and willingness to do what others won t. Consistency in attendance and effort is an area that our swimmers should always be looking to improve if they are to achieve their goals. A positive attitude towards training is another quality that should be applied every day if swimmers want to have any success. Not everything is enjoyable in training, but it is all for the swimmers benefit. It is amazing the affect that a positive or negative attitude can have on the training group. No one wants to be stuck in the lane or squad with negative people, everyone should look to be the positive force in the squad to help each other to get through those tough or boring training sessions. The importance of having a positive attitude and being consistent in attendance and effort is just as important now after the state champs as it was before the meet. The team has swimmers moving on to the next stage of competition with the major meets such as the Commonwealth Games Trials and the Australian Age Championships coming up quick. With swimmers preparing for these meets and others still looking to qualify the team needs to keep working together to help themselves and their teammates get the outcome they are working towards. For those not looking to compete at theses major meets the preparation for the Short Course State Championships has already begun. It may seem a long way off but if you are looking to improve and build off the success of the long course champs then the effort must start now. Athletes may not enjoy every minute of training but if they work hard and are consistent in attendance they can endure now and relax and enjoy the success when the time comes to race. Well done to all the athletes over the last season and thank you to everyone who has helped around the club and at the race meets for the team to have such a successful season. Good luck in the up and coming season! S T A R P L E X S W I M C L U B
4 V O L U M E 4, I S S U E 2 P A G E 4 High Elbow Pull In Freestyle Article from swimswam, com Courtesy of Gary Hall Sr., 10-time World Record Holder, 3-time Olympian, 1976 Olympic Games US Flagbearer and The Race Club co-founder. TRC METHODOLOGY Teaching swimming technique is very interesting. Every client we have at The Race Club is different. Some learn easily. Some don t. For those that struggle more with adapting to changes in technique or stroke mechanics, we find that our success often depends on taking a different approach or by using a different description or drill. A concept that is easily grasped by one swimmer may be completely incomprehensible to another. Our methodology in swim camps and private sessions gets down to the bottom of what each swimmer needs. Teaching the correct high elbow pull motion in freestyle is a good example of this challenge. For every event, other than the 50-meter sprint, the pulling motion of elite freestylers is strikingly similar. We often refer to that correct motion as the high elbow pull. Some call it early vertical forearm. I have written extensively about why it works, but that does not make it any easier to learn. There is really nothing very natural or intuitive about this motion. Some would consider it downright awkward. It requires flexibility. It diminishes propulsion to some extent. Yet it may be the single most important change a swimmer can make in improving freestyle technique. HIGH ELBOW PULL IN FREESTYLE Of all of the freestyle pulling motions we see with our Race Club clients, I categorize them into four different techniques; the out sweep, the in sweep, the deep pull and the high elbow pull. Excluding the 50 sprinters, I would say that upwards of 95% of our clients manage to find one of the three wrong pulling techniques. Very few learn the correct high elbow pull without some help. Through years of teaching, we have developed three of our favourite drills for teaching this high elbow pulling motion. Yet, even after spending a great deal of time and effort using these drills on this one important technique, many still don t get it right. So we are always searching for new ways to teach an old subject. KEEP YOUR ELBOWS POINTING FORWARD Recently, I was working with one of our clients who struggled to pull correctly, so I decided to give her some advice that I had never given before. Once your arm enters the water, I started, initiate the pull with the hand and the forearm, but keep your elbow pointing forward, toward the end of the pool for as long as you can in the direction you are swimming. Presto, she got it. It made perfect sense. Suddenly, her upper arms, the cause of most of the frontal drag during the pull, were less in harm s way. They weren t sticking out so far. She felt like she was slipping through the water. Not surprisingly, she was swimming faster. So now, when swimmers are challenged by the high elbow pull in freestyle or the correct pull in backstroke, I simply tell them to keep their elbows pointed toward the end of the pool for as long as they can. For many, it really helps them with both freestyle and backstroke pulling technique.
5 P A G E 5 Tea Tree Gully/STARplex Carnival A reminder that our joint carnival with Tea Tree Gully is on Saturday. A great part of the carnival which all swimmers love is the cake stall. If you are able to donate some baked goods for the stall, or would like to help co-ordinate this, please let me know at starplex.grants@gmail.com. Also a reminder to get your raffle tickets back ASAP. They can be placed in the wooden boxes next to the pockets. Look forward to seeing many of our swimmers there. Club Championship Meet 3 A very successful night for our third Club Championship meet for the 2017/18 year was held on January 4. Our inaugural handicap skins event was hotly contested, with many heats decided by fractions of a second. Congratulations to Amber (3rd), Eliesha (2nd) and to Austin for taking out the champions trophy. After club champs we presented our swimmers who qualified for individual events at State Long Course Championships which was held in January at SA Aquatic & Leisure Centre. This year we had 44 competitors - which included 6 of our youngest taking on the Optus Junior Dolphins event as well as 3 swimmers who represented the club in multi class events. We also presented swimmers who broke Short Course Club Records, with 18 swimmers earning certificates across age groups from 9 to 24 years. Congratulations to Jacob, James M, James S, Jesse, Josh, Luke, Maddi, Mia N, Gabby, Clarise. Erica, Mackenzie, Kate, Rachel, Hannah, Lateilia, Harrison and Matthew R. Farewell Esther It is with sadness we say goodbye to Esther. Esther has been with the Club many years as a swimmer and then a coach. We wish Esther all the best for the future and hope to see her at the Gawler Aquatic Centre soon. S T A R P L E X S W I M C L U B
