SAWH requires our support for several events. This Girl Can Following last year s successful TGC that saw many more girls playing sport, TGC week is to be repeated 3-11 th June: this is an opportunity for clubs and organisations to promote badminton, with resources (flyers, promo, t-shirts) from HSP s Lucy Carey, l.m.carey@herts.ac.uk. We will have a session in Hatfield Galleria on Saturday 10 th June: once again getting young and old shoppers enjoying badminton with racket prizes for a 1 minute hitting challenge for girls and women (U12, U18, 18+). Come and help it s a hoot! Post meeting: Galleria session is cancelled owing to too few volunteers..2 Clubs Comets JBC: Paul Woodley, new L1, is helping when he can. Numbers have dropped recently so could manage a few more children of all ages. Thanks to Micky Mahbubani for regular help and setting 3 inter-club tournaments (with HLC, Knebworth and GSP). Knebworth: Now have three nights - Sun, Wed, Tues at Gosling: juniors have a waiting list. Still trying to get Adrian to level 2 with me a level 3. Have been doing some private coaching too in Herts. Woolmer Green SmashUp! has regular attendances of 8. Activator Paul Woodley (a DoE Gold of Comets JBC, 2011) achieved UKCC L1 in Feb. Gosling: Phil Adams: Mondays 10-12am, coaching - 12 adults: 16:00 junior coaching - 10 jrs: Tuesdays (new) 10 12: Thursdays 10-12am, coaching 12 adults: 16:00 junior coaching 16 jrs: Fridays: 10-12am, No strings: 20 adults: Saturdays: 9-10am juniors 14 jrs, 10-11am No strings 26adults. Mentoring L1s: Sam Newlove and Jasmine Teo Other: Saturdays 11 12:30am Advanced adults: 25 adults Post Meeting update: John Stobo s sessions at GSP (with slight edits by DB) Here's a brief report on the primary school training sessions I ran at Gosling Sports Park in March that the HSBA committee agreed to support. The expenditure was as stated in my of 2 March (below) except that the court hire costs was 8.75 pounds less than budgeted because in the first week Gosling could only offer two extra courts from hours, not three. How worthwhile was it? Well, in addition to 5 of my existing group who decided to stay for the extra hour in at least some of the 4 weeks, I attracted 8 "new" players. They were all of primary school age, and seven of them were born in 2007 or 2008, so could potentially be of interest to HSBA at the Under 12 trials this season or next if they continue training regularly and do improve. (I have given everyone in the group details of this June's trials.) Every new player had their first session free of charge as a "taster", and thereafter there were a total of 12 attendances at 5 each by them. However, these players were all known to me as children who had attended after-school badminton with me at their school (Commonswood, Our Lady, Applecroft or St John's, Lemsford), so the flyer and the publicity at the primary 3

4 schools team tournament did not succeed in attracting any players from outside the scope of my existing coaching activities, which are of course limited to Welwyn Garden City. The conclusion? I am going to fund a continuation of the extra sessions myself (hopefully with Sam Newlove as a second coach - the children love him!) up to the trials, as I am fairly optimistic attendance will be enough to cover my costs. And in the and slots there would be scope for yet another two courts, as they appear to be virtually never booked. However, I haven't managed to attract truly "new" players, and I don't think there are the makings of an HSBA Under 10 squad in what I am doing at the moment. I think it's better viewed as an initiative local to WGC, and to me the question is whether similar initiatives could be launched elsewhere around the County? (I am something of an enthusiast for the concept of decentralising squad training across the County in the longer term.) Update: Post Easter sessions continued. John would like to restart in September with some WH CBN sponsorship: could be with pay back to CBN from fees..3 Schools Inter-2ndry- Schools U16 Girls Queenswood are through to the finals. AIM project The AIM project for after-school sessions for 3 primary and one secondary (Monks Walk) was initially delivered by Ian Robinson, went well until January when Ian was unable to continue. As previously reported John Stobo has managed to pick up Peartree but not Holy Family: Chris Adey who is now a L1 has made Monks Walk staff aware that he is available. Commonswood want their sessions in Summer term. An update report was provided to HSBA committee meeting 16 th May (and is on CBN website). Sport Inspired Games SIG is back again for 5/6 Hatfield primary schools, 13 th June, sponsored by Sport Inspired and managed by their Kat Hodge. Badminton as one of 5 sports is represented, so we are looking for a coach to help deliver and to supervise the leaders. Post Meeting: Ian Robinson is leading this with other coaches popping in: there is a the opportunity to liaise with teachers on AIM. Gold Coast Games The annual WH primary schools games (some 20 sports) for some 18 schools in July at Gosling is this year being called Gold Coast Games. Badminton is again represented, so we are looking for a coach to supervise the leaders. Post Meeting: Ian Robinson is supervising the leaders and speaking with teachers on AIM. Bishops Hatfield Girls School Their new hall with cream walls opened at half term and is available for bookings: Ian Robinson has had a response regarding potential sessions..4 Oaklands College, WGC David Brown s Tuesday sessions has approx. 20 participants. Herts FE Colleges Tournament 28Mar17 at HSV: West Herts College won the overall SEN and Mainstream trophy. Thanks to Barbara, for overall (badminton) tournament organisation with help from John Stobo, Nick, Christine Adey, Paul Widdicombe and DB. 4
