The Scarlet Knights are eager to snap a four-game losing streak that includes three one-goal games and two overtime contests. On Friday RU hosts its fifth consecutive ranked opponent when it welcomes No. 20 Michigan State to the Bauer Complex for a conference game. Sunday RU will face a non-conference foe when 2013 NCAA qualifier New Hampshire visits Piscataway. Michigan State Notes - The Spartans are 5-4 on the year, and 1-2 in the Big Ten. They have played overtime in five games this season. They enter on a two game losing streak, falling last weekend at home to Penn State and Maryland. - Senior Forward Abby Barker leads MSU with nine goals, seven assists, and 25 points. She is second in the B1G to Iowa s Natalie Cafone in points and goals. Allie Ahern has tallied six goals as well. - In goal Sierra Patton has started all nine games with a 2.32 GAA and.728 save percentage. The Spartans are first in the Big Ten with 66 saves on the year. Series History This is will be the 10th all-time meeting between the Scarlet Knight and Spartans. Michigan State leads the all-time series 5-3-1, including wins in the last five matchups. Rutgers will be looking for its first win over MSU since New Hampshire Notes - After a 15-7 season in 2013 where UNH won the America East Championship and a NCAA bid, the Wildcats have started this year at 2-8, with wins over Drexel and Hofstra. - The team has scored 18 goals in 10 games, with eight of them coming off the stick of Meg Flately. Heart of a Champion After scoring four goals as a sophomore, Katie Champion has already equaled that mark in For the season she is up to 12 points, a new career high. Walli, Walli, Walia Sophomore defender Sofia Walia currently paces the team with 13 points and five assists, and is tied for the team lead with four goals. Her four goals this year are already a career high. Keeping up with the Leaders Matching Walia and Champion with four goals and the three-way team lead is junior Nicole Imbriaco. After two goals in her first two seasons, she has scored in four of the seven games thus far this year, including a three-game streak from Sept Her eight points this year is a new career high. Between the Pipes Shevaun Hayes has started all nine RU games in goal, playing over 662 minutes in the cage and posting a 4-5 record, with a 2.54 goals against average and.707 save percentage. Of the nine field hockey schools in the Big Ten, six of them are ranked in the NFHCA Top 20, including three in the top 10: Maryland (2), Iowa (7), Penn State (9), Northwestern (11), Michigan (15), and Michigan State (20) RPI The second edition of the NCAA field hockey RPI of the season is now available. Rutgers checks in at 22, which is the sixth best in the Big Ten. 4 2014 RUTGERS UNIVERSITY FIELD HOCKEY P. 4 Rutgers Coaching Staff Head Coach Meredith Long (Maryland, 05) Meredith Long enters her third season at the helm of the Rutgers field hockey program in 2014 after leading the Scarlet Knights to nine wins in each of her first two seasons. In 2013, Long was responsible for leading the program to a 9-9 finish, the first. 500 record at season s end for the program since The Scarlet Knights battled eight nationally ranked opponents, picking up a 1-0 win over No. 16 Drexel, and losing by just a single goal in five of those matchups. Two of Long s players earned postseason recognition from the 2013 campaign. Midfielder Sophie Wright and back Sofia Walia were each named to the 2013 All-BIG EAST Second Team and 2013 Longstreth/NFHCA Division I All-Mid-Atlantic Region Second Team. In her debut year, Long led the Scarlet Knights to a 9-10 overall record. Long guided RU through six matchups against nationally-ranked opponents, highlighted by a thrilling 3-2 victory over No. 19 Albany in the season opener. The Scarlet Knights lost by a single goal on three occasions against ranked opponents. Long would also mentor the BIG EAST Rookie of the Year, Alyssa Bull, in her inaugural season. Bull s accolade marked the first player in program history to receive the honor. Additionally, Bull and teammates Lisa Patrone, Carlie Rouh and Jenn Staab were named to the All-BIG EAST Second Team, while Bull and Patrone were named to the 2012 Longstreth/NFHCA Division I Mid-Atlantic Region Second Team and Rouh was selected for the 2012 Division I Senior Game. Each of the nine-win seasons for Long represent the second most wins for the program in a single season since The Scarlet Knights have defeated a ranked opponent in each of Long s two years at the helm. Off the field, Long s teams have been impressive in the classroom. Former Rutgers field hockey standout Lisa Patrone was tabbed the field hockey recipient of the BIG EAST Scholar-Athlete Sport Excellence Award. Rutgers has been well represented on the BIG EAST All-Academic team, with eighteen members named in and seventeen in The Rutgers field hockey team received the 2012 Gladiator by SGI/NFHCA Divison I National Academic Team Award as announced by the National Field Hockey Coaches Association (NFHCA), making them one of 63 teams recognized for achieving a team GPA of 3.0 or higher during the first semester of the academic year. RU was also honored with the Big East Team Academic Excellence Award for having the highest collective GPA (3.531) of any league team in its sport. In addition to the team award, 13 Scarlet Knights were named to the 2012 Gladiator by SGI / NFHCA Division I National Academic Squad. To be named to the squad, student-athletes must achieve a cumulative GPA of 3.30 or higher through the first semester. A highly decorated collegiate athlete at the University of Maryland, Long continues to play field hockey competitively at the international stage and has been a member of the USA Indoor National Squad for three years. Most recently, Long and current player Devon Freshnock participated in the USA Women s National Field Hockey Championship. In 2013 she and then-rising senior Lisa Patrone earned spots on the New Jersey regional team, and were three of the 108 athletes participating in the 2013 Women s National Championship in Norfolk, Va. Long was an instrumental member of the Senior Indoor Squad that won the ArminenTurnier RohrMax Cup after three days of competitive international play in Perchtoldsdorf, Austria in January The win marked the first-ever gold for the U.S. National Indoor team at the international level. She also competed in Buenos Aires, Argentina in March in a series of matches against competitors from Argentina, Argentina U19 and Uruguay. Long is currently the head coach for the U-16 National Indoor Team. She first assumed this position prior to the season. Prior to being appointed head coach in January of 2012, Long served as interim head coach for two months and was an assistant coach with the Scarlet Knights for two seasons. The former high school All-American enjoyed success in her first season on staff for the Scarlet Knights, helping secure a trip to the 2010 BIG EAST Tournament, the program s first appearance since Long spent the 2009 season as an assistant coach at Towson University, aiding in all aspects of the program. She oversaw recruiting, helped in tracking academic progress of student-athletes, and helped to coordinate team travel, among other duties. Before her stay with the Tigers, Long was an assistant for three seasons at the University of Vermont. She contributed on every facet of the team, from recruiting and scouting to the development of players. In addition, Long also taught several classes at UVM. Long commenced her collegiate playing career at Boston University, earning a spot on the 2001 America East All-Rookie team. She transferred to the University of Maryland, helping the Terrapins advance to the NCAA Final Four for three-straight seasons, including the 2005 ACC title and the 2005 NCAA National Championship. Long was a member of the NFHCA/Styx Academic All-American team in 2003 and earned a spot on the ACC Honor Roll during the and campaigns. Long graduated from Maryland in 2005 with a Bachelor of Arts degree in philosophy. While at Ocean City High School, Long played on three state championship teams ( ), and was a member of the United States Field Hockey Association High Performance Mid-Atlantic team. Long is a member of the National Field Hockey Coaches Association (NFHCA) and the United States Field Hockey Association (US- FHA). In addition, she has been the head coach for the USFHA Futures Elite Program and the Mid-Atlantic Futures Elite Academy Site.

5 2014 RUTGERS UNIVERSITY FIELD HOCKEY P. 5 Rutgers Coaching Staff Assistant Coach Lauren Burke (Vermont, 09) Burke is in her first season with Rutgers in Burke joined the Scarlet Knights staff after spending the previous two seasons as an assistant coach at Sacred Heart (Conn.). At RU, her main responsibility will be overseeing recruiting efforts, as well as assisting in all other aspects of the program. Burke spent the 2012 and 2013 seasons with the Pioneers, where she helped in all facets including defensive strategy, recruiting and operations. At SHU, Burke implemented practice plans, tactical and technical development, game day operations, and fostered connections with alumni, parents and the university. Prior to her time at Sacred Heart, Burke was a graduate assistant at Robert Morris University for the 2011 season, contributing in all aspects of the program. While at Robert Morris, Burke coached for the Venom Field Hockey Club in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. The Mahopac, New York, native also has previous head coaching experience, taking over the helm of the Somers High School varsity field hocking team from August 2010 to June Burke has served as a United States Field Hockey Association (USFHA) Futures Coach since She has spent time coaching Level 1, U19 and U16 programs. Burke holds a Level 2 USFHA accreditation and has selected at the New York State Regional Tournament, which hosts the best high school players in the region and prepares them for the Olympic track. A 2009 graduate of Vermont, Burke was a four-year letterwinner for the Catamounts. While leading Vermont to its best three seasons in program history, Burke was named a senior captain in 2008 and a 2006 America East All-Tournament Team player. Burke also achieved success in the classroom earning a spot on the America East Academic Honor Roll from Long was an assistant coach for the Catamounts from Burke has a Bachelor of Science degree in physical education with a concentration on exercise and sport science from Vermont and earned her Master of Science in instructional leadership in sports management from Robert Morris in Assistant Coach Roland Peekel (CIOS Breda/Goes, 08) Roland Peekel enters his fourth season with the Rutgers field hockey staff and third under head coach Meredith Long in Peekel brings international experience with him as both a coach and a player. Prior to arriving On the Banks, Peekel began his coaching stint in the United States in 2009 with Total Dutch Field Hockey, in Somerset, N.J. Peekel covered an array of tasks, including individual training sessions, formulating skills class curriculum, managing the club website and serving as the Club Manager. Before coming to the states Peekel spent two years with Hockey Club Vlissingen as the field hockey coordinator. In addition to coaching athletes ages 10-26, the Dordrecht, Netherlands native was responsible for the Youth Development Plan, as well as hosting and chairing the monthly meetings for trainers. Peekel spent two years playing for the club on the men s team as a center midfielder. In 2008 Peekel became the president of Roland Peekel Hockey Training. The company provided professional Field Hockey Clinics for children aged 10-18, all of which was coordinated and implemented by Peekel himself. In 1997 Peekel began his coaching career as a volunteer with Hockey Club Zevenbergen, where he spent 10 seasons assisting with a variety of age groups. Peekel spent 14 seasons playing with the Zevenbergen as a forward and a midfielder. Peekel received certificates in KNHB trainer/coach A, as well as a youth trainer coach course.
