CU will face Illinois for the fourth straight year, on August 31, and Iowa on Sept. 1. Both matches are set for a 6 p.m. MT start and will be televised on Pac-12 Network. This will be the fourth straight year the Buffs and Illini have met in the Pac-12/Big Ten Challenge. It is also the fifth straight year the two teams have met in non-conference play. Illinois won the first ever meeting on Sept. 12, 1992, but the Buffs answered back with two straight wins. UI then went on to take the following three meetings, before the Buffs won the last two in the series. The last two meetings (both Buffs wins) have gone five sets. 5 Colorado Volleyball ABOUT THE BUFFS: The Buffs are 2-1 after the first weekend of action, finishing second at the Rumble in the Rockies in Laramie, Wyo. Senior Alexa Smith led the Buffs with 3.50 kills per set. She also added 1.75 digs per set and 0.58 blocks per set. Second for the Buffs was junior Justine Spann, who averaged 3.42 kills and 1.83 digs per set. The Buffs hit.253 at the tournament, thanks in part to sophomore setter Brynna DeLuzio, who handed out 96 assists (8.00 per game). Freshman setter Jenna Ewert added another 21 assists in her first career action. Defensively, the Buffs averaged 2.75 blocks per set. Redshirt freshman Danielle Price posted 1.42 blocks per set and junior Lillie Klemmer added 1.25 blocks per set. Junior libero Rachel Whipple led CU in the back row, averaging 3.25 digs per set. SCOUTING THE ILLINI: Illinois is 3-0 to start the season and is currently ranked 11th in the latest AVCA Division I Coaches Poll. The Illini swept UNC-Wilmington, but was pushed to five-sets against No. 25 Colorado State and Northern Colorado last weekend. Jacqueline Quade leads the UI attack, averaging 4.54 kills per set while hitting.282. As a team, the Illini hit.243 with Jordyn Poulter handing out assists per set. Ashlyn Fleming posted 1.00 blocks per set as the team averaged Libero Morgan O Brien is recording 4.62 digs per set. SCOUTING THE HAWKEYES: Iowa is 2-1 after the first weekend. Taylor Louis leads the team with 4.17 kills per set, while Griere Hughes adds 3.00 kills per set. Brie Orr is averaged 8.92 assists per set while leading the Hawkeyes to a.251 hitting efficiency. Amiya Jones is the top blocker, posting 1.00 blocks per set and Ore adds an additional 0.92 blocks per set. Molly Kelly is recording 5.00 digs per set. AVCA RANKING: The Buffs are ranked 21st in the latest AVCA poll and are one of seven Pac-12 teams in the rankings. Another three conference teams are receiving votes. PRESEASON PAC-12: Colorado was picked to finish fifth in this season s preseason Pac-12 poll, just one point behind UCLA (90-89). The ranking is the highest CU has been since joining the league in The Buffs also had a pair of athletes named to the Preseason All-Pac-12 Team: Naghede Abu and Alexa Smith. EARLIEST START TO THE SEASON: The August 24 start to the season is the earliest start to the volleyball season since CU added its volleyball team in This is the third time CU will begin its season on that date. The other two seasons that began on August 24 were 2007 and 2012 and coincidentally, those seasons were also started on the road. JESSE MAHONEY ERA: Jesse Mahoney was named the fifth head coach in CU history in December of 2015 and is entering his third season at the helm of the Colorado Buffaloes. This season Mahoney is joined by associate head coach Lee Maes and assistant coach Evan Sanders. Eduardo Fiallos is the technical coordinator and Crystal Gippe will again serve as the director of operations. 500 BLOCKS: Naghede Abu is positioned to be the second Buff to reach 500 career blocks as she has 448 heading into the 2018 season. Since debuting as a varsity program in the fall of 1986, the Buffs have recorded an overall record of including one conference title (Big Eight in 1993). HOME OPENERS: The Buffs are in home openers. CU swept Wake Forest to open the season in 2017 with set scores of 25-23, 25-18, SEASON OPENERS: The Buffs are in season openers all-time, which includes a 8-4 record in the last 12 season openers. CONFERENCE OPENERS: Colorado is in all-time conference openers. It had a record of 7-8 in the Big 12 era and was 5-5 in the Big Eight. CU is 2-5 in Pac-12 openers, all against Utah. 8 HEAD COACH Jesse Mahoney Jesse Mahoney was named the fifth head volleyball coach in University of Colorado history on December 17, In his two seasons at the helm, he has led the Buffs to a mark (.594). Mahoney s second season saw Colorado return to the NCAA Tournament and advance to the sweet 16 round for the first time in 20 years. The Buffs recorded a overall record, which was the third best win total for CU since becoming a varsity program. Colorado also earned a 12-8 mark in Pac-12 play, the most conference wins since becoming members of the league. CU finished tied for fifth in the Pac-12 standings. The Buffs started the season off with a 10-1 record in non-conference action, which included wins at Illinois (3-2) and No. 22 Colorado State (3-2). The win at CSU was the first for CU since During the Pac-12 slate, CU recorded four wins against ranked opponents, which included a season sweep of Oregon, which was ranked 12th and 15th, respectively when the Buffs faced the Ducks. CU also picked up its first ever win against No. 19 Southern California, and defeated No. 11 Washington, both 3-0 in Boulder. After finishing the regular season with a 22-9 record, the Buffs earned an at-large bid to the NCAA Tournament. CU swept its competition, first downing James Madison before knocking out the host, No. 17 Baylor, for CU s firstever true road match in the NCAA Tournament. The Buffs eventually fell to No. 5 Nebraska, the 2017 NCAA Champion, to finish the season. CU was ranked 19th in the final AVCA Coaches Poll of the season. In addition to the team s success, several Buffs had outstanding individual seasons. Junior outside hitter Alexa Smith became CU s first AVCA Second Team All-American and was also named to the AVCA All-Pacific South Region and All-Pac-12 Teams. Freshman setter Brynna DeLuzio had one of the best freshman seasons for a Buff, earning AVCA All-America honorable mention honors in addition to the Volleyball- Mag.Com All-Freshman Team and PrepVolleyball.Com All-Freshman Second Team. DeLuzio was the first Buff to earn the AVCA Pacific South Region Freshman of the Year award and was also selected to the AVCA all-region honorable mention team. She was a Pac-12 All-Freshman Team honoree and earned All-Pac-12 honorable mention honors. In his first season (2016) at the helm of the Buffaloes, CU saw its share of success, recording a overall record. The Buffs also earned a ninth place finish in the Pac-12 with a 6-14 match. CU finished its non-conference slate with an 8-2 record, which included several huge wins. The Buffs recorded back-to-back wins against ranked opponents for the first time in school history when they took down No. 13 Penn State and No. 17 Illinois at the Pac-12/ Big Ten Challenge. Colorado also earned its first win against Colorado State since 2002, defeating the Rams 3-1. During the Pac-12 schedule, CU knocked off three more ranked opponents. The Buffs recorded a huge 3-1 win over No. 12 UCLA in the 400th match at Coors Events Center. The other wins came on the road. The Buffs knocked off No. 13 Washington State in Pullman, Wash., which was the Cougars first home loss of the season, and took down No. 17 Utah in the final contest of the season in Salt Lake City. The Buffs were ranked five weeks and were ranked as high as 16th. After they dropped out of the poll, they were still receiving votes for an additional five weeks. Several individual Buffs earned recognition during the season, most notably Gabby Simpson who was named to the AVCA All-Pacific South honorable mention team after she was selected to the All-Pac-12 honorable mention team. Simpson was joined on the all-conference team by Abu and Smith. Academically, Mahoney has seen several Buffs earn Pac-12 All-Academic honors. In 2017, Stephanie Shadley was named to the second team for the second time, while Abu, Anna Pfefferle, Smith and Rachel Whipple were honor-
