Sophomore OH Emily Allen earned all-tournament honors, averaging 3.70 kills in 10 sets... Sophomore Kelechi Ohiri totaled 19 blocks to go with (.286) hitting, while redshirt freshman libero Heather Reed notched 48 digs (4.80 dps). An early-season injury bug thrust several younger Aggies into action or different roles... Libero Malia Bolko moved up to the front row as a left-side hitter, responding with a career-high 5 blocks against MSU... Redshirt freshman Anna Donald made her first collegiate starts on the right side, totaling 11 kills and 10 blocks for the weekend... She also had her best match of the weekend against the Racers, notching 9 kills on 20 swings with 4 block assists... Donald also had 6 stuffs earlier that day against SDSU... True freshman Jackie Graves made her debut in Oregon, providing 3 kills and 4 blocks, mostly against MSU.. Sophomore Lauren Jackson did not play against Murray State but had 9 kills and 3 blocks in the other two matches... Overall, UC Davis had 28.0 team blocks for the weekend. RANKINGS: Ohiri shares the Big West Conference blocks lead with UC Santa Barbara s Charlie Robinson at 1.40 per set... Reed is the only player with better than five digs per frame (5.05), giving her a solid edge on Savanah Kahakai of Hawai i (4.86) for the Big West lead... As a team, UC Davis is second in blocks (2.40) behind only UCSB (2.82). UP NEXT: The Aggies head to their third tournament in as many weekends, this time at Nevada s Wolf Pack Tournament... UC Davis will face Southern Utah on Friday, then Gonzaga and the host Wolf Pack on Saturday... 2 GONZAGA (4-0) remained undefeated after a 3-0 sweep of Montana on Saturday... Senior OH McKayla Ferris hit (.455) for a match in which the Zags never trailed... Fifth-year MB Paige Folger added.462 hitting with a team-leading 6 blocks... The Bulldogs previously went 3-0 at the Utah Volleyball Classic, with Ferris, Faith Smith and Emmy Allen (not to be confused with UC Davis sophomore Emily Allen) earning all-tournament nods. NEVADA (4-2) went 3-0 and only lost one set at the Saint Mary s Tournament, taking down Middle Tennessee State, UC Riverside and the host Gaels... Senior OH and 2015 All-Mountain West Conference honoree Madison Morell leads the Wolf Pack in kills (4.48) and hitting (.394). SERIES HISTORIES: Gonzaga and Southern Utah are both second-time opponents for UC Davis... The Aggies swept the Thunderbirds at the Fresno State Invitational last year... The Bulldogs bested UC Davis in four sets at Montana during 2005, the second year of the Div. I reclassification era... The UC Davis-Nevada series dates back to the first seasons of women s volleyball... The Aggies have won the last three meetings: 3-0 in each of 2013 and 2010, 3-1 in DAN CONNERS QUOTES On the Oregon Classic: San Diego State was a hard match because we hadn t practiced much with that group. We had to find a different rotation and worked out some of the kinks in that match, but we weren t really playing great as a group. We started playing a lot better against Murray State. We had really good defense, and that s helped us. I thought we started the Oregon match really well. We talked about being aggressive and looking to score when we have the ball. We couldn t give them easy stuff. We started out the match being very aggressive. We didn t miss too many serves. When we attacked, we scored off the block. The challenge in those situations is that when you play a team with that physicality, once they make adjustments, you have to respond with a different game plan. We had trouble doing that. They made good adjustments and started putting different pressure on us after the first set. It s hard to sustain that for a whole match. Oregon s physicality wears you down. They re 6-2, 6-3 across the board, they jump well and hit the ball hard. That wore us down, and it s something we ll have to work on. On the Wolf Pack Tournament: Again, we re playing good teams so we re going to be challenged. I want to see how we respond to the challenge, what mentality we ll play with, and how we sustain it through the ups and downs and runs of points. I have high expectations for the way we play defense and grind out points, the way we serve, and the mentality we play with. I think we can still improve in those areas. We ll hammer those home this week. We definitely need to raise our hitting percentage. But Anna Donald hadn t played before this weekend. Malia Bolko had not hit before the weekend. Jackie Graves had not played before this weekend. It s hard for a bunch of new kids to figure out how to score right away. There s a lot we can do offensively to get better. Sophomore Emily Allen made the all-tourney squad at the Oregon Classic (Sept. 2-3) UC Davis was selected fifth in the preseason Big West Conference coaches poll with 50 points, just behind CSUN (53) and UC Santa Barbara (56). Entering the 2016 season, the Aggies had just four players who had lettered two or more seasons: Kendall Walbrecht, Allie Wegener, Aima Eichie and Sophia Mar.
