It is the first national player of the week award bestowed on a Bronco in program history. Heidemann tallied seven points to lead Boise State to victories against in-state rivals Idaho and Idaho State. She scored the game winning goal at Idaho, before turning in a career-best five points against Idaho State. Heidemann recorded the first multi-goal game of her career while also assisting on the game winner. She scored her three goals on just five shots. Heidemann was also named Mountain West Offensive Player of the Week for the second time in her career. DOUBLE DOUBLE: Juniors Brooke Heidemann and KT Clayton each scored two goals against Idaho State (Sept. 7). It is the first time two Broncos have scored multiple goals in the same match since Oct. 8, 2010, against New Mexico State (Shannon Saxton and Cheyenne Jones). FAST START FOR FLORES: Freshman goalkeeper Janelle Flores did not allow a goal until the fourth start of her career. She posted a 295:20 sutout streak, the longest to start a career in Boise State history. Flores recorded two complete shutouts in that span and was halfway to another before exiting the Portland State match at halftime. DROBNEY DISHES: Sophomore Kelli Drobney recorded two assists at Idaho (Sept. 5), helping Boise State score both of its goals against the Vandals. Drobney became the 18th Bronco all-time to record multiple assists in a match. It is the 25th occurence in program history. Brooke Heidemann and Mikhaila Bowden each accomplished the feat last season, which was the first time since SPREADING THE WEALTH: Through seven matches Boise State has scored 12 goals. Seven different Broncos have found the back of the net. Junior Brooke Heidemann leads the way with four. Shannon Schueren and KT Clayon are the other Broncos with multiple goals on the season, each scoring twice. Last season 10 Broncos combined to score 33 goals, led by Heidemann s nine. STRONG DEBUT: Freshman goalkeeper Janelle Flores became the first Boise State true freshman to start a season opener at keeper since Kim Parker in Flores impressed immediately, recording a shutout in her first collegiate match. She orchestrated a Bronco defense that allowed Drake to attempt just one shot and not put any on target. STRONG DEBUT PART II: Freshman midfielder Sarah Taylor made her collegiate debut in the season opener against Drake. Taylor scored in the 85th minute, just 13 minutes after entering the match for the first time. She became the first Bronco freshman to score in a season opener since Chelsea Robinson in BOISE STATE SOCCER NOTES LATE STRIKES...: In the first four matches, five of Boise State s six goals came in the second half, including three goals in the 85th minute or later. The lone first-half goal came in the 43rd minute (Aug. 24)....AND EARLY STRIKES: In Boise State s last two matches, the Broncos scored early and often. Each game saw Boise State get out to a 2-0 lead in the first 20 minutes. Boise State scored two goals in the first 12 minutes at Idaho (Sept. 5). Brooke Heidemann scored in the fifth minute and Shannon Schueren added a goal in the 12th minute. It is the first time Boise State put two goals on the board by the 12-minute mark since Sept. 21, 2007, at Oregon State. The almost duplicated the feat against Idaho State (Sept. 7) with Heidemann scoring in the 15th minute and assisting on KT Clayton s goal in the 19th minute. FLORES POW: Freshman goalkeeper Janelle Flores was named the Mountain West Defensive Player of the Week following the first week of the season. Flores did not allow a goal in 135 minutes of action across two starts at the PSU Tournament. She recorded a shutout against Drake, in the first match of her collegiate career after becoming the first Boise State true freshman to start a game at keeper since Liz Ruiz in 2008 and the first to start a season opener since Kim Parker in Against Portland State, Flores started and played the first half. She blanked the Vikings for 45 minutes, making two saves, and allowing the Broncos to take a 1-0 lead into intermission. It is the fifth time Boise State has earned MW Defensive Player of the Week honors, and 14th overall regardless of conference. It is the 11th time in program history a goalkeeper has been named conference defensive player of the week, and the seventh-straight season a Bronco keeper earned the award. Flores was also named the CollegeSportsMadness.com MW Player of the Week. HEROIC HEIDEMANN: Junior Brooke Heidemann became the first Boise State field player to appear at goalkeeper at Utah Valley (Aug. 31). Heidemann played the final 21:22 between the pipes, including both overtime periods, after Bailey Anderson was injured as the result of a red card. Anderson s departure left Boise State without a healthy keeper. Heidemann, a twotime all-conference midfielder, stepped up and kept the Wolverines off the scoreboard for the remainder of the match and helped Boise State to a 1-1 draw. Heidemann assisted on the game-tying goal just three minutes before taking over at goalie. Coach Thomas on Heidemann... Brooke is the epitome of what a Bronco is. This is a team full of girls willing to give everything they have for the team. Brooke is at the top of that list and nothing says that more than jumping in goal in a tie game because that s what we needed. I looked her dead in the eye and asked her what she thought. Brooke looked me right back and said `I ve got 4

5 Sept. 19 & 21 at No. 12 Pepperdine & UC Irvine BRONCOS PICKED THIRD: Boise State was picked to finish third in the Mountain West preseason coaches poll. The Broncos received two of the 12 first-place votes and garnered 103 points in the poll. San Diego State was picked to win a third-straight title with 115 points, while new affiliate member Colorado College was tabbed second with 112 points. The Aztecs and Tigers split the remaining 10 first-place votes. MULTI-GOAL MAGIC: Boise State is under Jim Thomas when scoring multiple goals, including seven games with at least three tallies. This season s meeting with Idaho State (Sept. 7) was the first time Boise State scored four times under Thomas. The Broncos are on an 21-match winning streak when scoring multiple goals, spanning three full years. The last time Boise State scored multiple goals in a loss was a 4-3 double-overtime setback against Montana in the 2011 season opener (Aug. 19). YOU ONLY SHOOT ONCE: That s the motto as Drake attempted just one shot against Boise State in the season opener (Aug. 22). A cross in the 48th minute was flicked toward goal, but never threatened the net falling short and wide. It is just the second time in Bronco history an opponent has taken one shot, matching the all-time low set Sept. 9, 2009, against Arkansas Pine-Bluff. It is the fourth time in school history the Broncos did not face a shot on goal in a match. MAKING IT A HABIT: Junior Brooke Heidemann scored in the first match of the season. Heidemann netted the second goal of the match Aug. 22, against Drake, putting away a 25-yard strike after breaking away from midfield and sidestepping the keeper. She also scored in the season opener in 2013, her first of nine goals last seaosn. EXPERIENCED BRONCOS: Boise State enters the 2014 campaign with seven returning starters, including a pair of seniors who will be four-year starters and a junior who is already a two-time first-team All-MW selection. Seniors Mikhaila Bowden and Shannon Schueren are the Broncos only two seniors, but have combined to play 9,802 minutes. Brooke Heidemann will look to add to her impressive list of accolades and take on a leadership role as a junior. POINTS ON POINTS ON POINTS: Brooke Heidemann turned in one of the most prolific individual seasons in school history last year. Heidemann scored 21 points on nine goals and three assists as a sophomore. It is the fifth-most points scored in a season in program history and the highest total since NOT OUT OF NOWHERE: Brooke Heidemann s 21-point sophomore season came after scoring just four points as a freshman. However, Heidemann surged at the end of the 2012 season, garnering enough attention to be named MW Freshman of the Year. The late success set her up for a consistent sophomore season. BOISE STATE SOCCER NOTES CSM.com PRESEASON PICKS: CollegeSportsMadness.com named three Broncos to its 2014 preseason All- Mountain West teams. Brooke Heidemann and Mikhaila Bowden were selected to the first team, while Kayla Tucker picked up a second-team nod. STINGY DEFENSE: Boise State s success last season was fueled by a defense that surrendered just 0.78 goals per game. The mark ranked first in the Mountain West and No. 40 in the NCAA. GOOD AT BOTH ENDS: Boise State scored 33 goals last season and allowed just 19. The Broncos led the Mountain West in goals scored and tied for the fewest allowed. Their 0.78 goals-against average (per 90 minutes) led the conference, while the 1.43 goals socred per game was second best. Boise State s goal differential for the season was the top mark in the MW. IRON BRONCO: Senior Mikhaila Bowden has been a steady force in the Boise State defense since stepping on campus, and the unit s anchor for most of her career. Bowden has appeared in and started 68 of the 69 games Boise State has played during her career and led the Broncos in minutes played each of her three seasons. She is on pace to set the career record for minutes played. She currently ranks No. 3 all-time wih 6,414 minutes. Follow her ascent, along with other records on notice, in the sidebar on page 6. SELECT COMPANY: Junior Brooke Heidemann has already been named to the All-Mountain West First Team twice in her career. Heidemann is just the second Bronco all-time to earn first-team honors twice in her career, joining Shannon Saxton (2007 and 2010 in the WAC). Heidemann and Saxton are also the only two Broncos to earn conference freshman of the year honors. Saxton won the award in the WAC in 2007, while Hiedemann earned the MW honor in Brittany Zoellner remains the only Bronco to earn conference player of the year honors, taking home the 2000 Big West MVP award. NEW IN FRONT OF THE NET: Boise State enters unfamiliar territory this season with an inexperienced goalkeeper. Ever since Bronco great Liz Ruiz won the starting goalkeeper spot as a freshman in 2008, the starting keeper has either been the returning starter or had already spent at least two years in the program. No Bronco fits those parameters this season. REPLACING MCDEVITT: Maddy McDevitt was Boise State s starting goalkeeper the past two seasons. McDevitt set singleseason records last year for shutouts (eight) and goals-against average (0.78) BOISE STATE RECORD... The three assists tied the school record for a single match (Abbe Roche vs. Siena, Sept. 7, 2002). TUCKER BREAKS OUT: Kayla Tucker netted five goals as a redshirt freshman in 2013, the most by a Bronco freshman since 2009, and tied for the sixth-most by a freshman in program history. Schueren has scored 14 times, also with six going for game-winning goals. Heidemann is tied for fifth and Schueren tied for eighth all-time at Boise State for goals scored. 7 Sept. 19 & 21 at No. 12 Pepperdine & UC Irvine POSITION PREVIEWS: Head coach Jim Thomas and assistant coach Ed Moore preview the 2014 Broncos position-byposition. Ed Moore on Goalkeepers... I think it will be a battle week to week, I really do. Ideally we would like to have someone who clearly establishes herself as the number one, but if it s a week-to-week competition there are a lot of plusses to that. Pushing everyone to be dialed in every week will push them all to get better. Jim Thomas on Defenders... We start everything we do at the defensive end. What we do with our back line determines everything we do. It will always be our first focus. We are very fortunate to have phenomenal personnel there. We are basically returning the entire starting back line. We have a lot of experience, a lot of technical capability and a lot of attacking ability out of the back. Specifically we have two incredibly strong central backs in Mikhaila (Bowden) and Hailey (DeVries). That enables us to send the attacking players like KT Clayton very, very high in the attack because we can trust those two to cover the breakdowns. Jim Thomas on Midfielders... Brooke Heidemann has been working on the range of shots she can take and being a less-predictable dribbler. She s added some new kinks to the way she runs at players. She s also really increased the ways in which she can affect a game by not needing to be the goal scorer to help us win. We ve got a kid (Heidemann) who has been the freshman of the year, one of the best players in the conference last year but is without hardware. I think within the next two years she s going to be really focused on coming away with some sort of ring on her finger. In Shannon (Schueren) you have a kid who has really made the physical sacrifices to help this program get to where it is right now. She leads the charge in the weight room, she leads the charge in preparation. She has had to overcome a lot of injuries and still manages to set the tone in all of those off-the-field areas. Her mindset toward playing the game and how she is the tempo controller for us, that kind of thing is very difficult to replace; but it s excellent for us to have her work with some of the young players we have this year. Jim Thomas on Forwards... Last year we had a lot of very good individuals, but were young and picking up things on the fly. They were figuring out themselves and figuring out their opponents, game in and game out. You re going to see a lot more synergy out there this year. The movements will complement one another more.
