Taylor became the seventh different Ute to net the game-winning goal in Utah s nine victories this year. Dalley has three of them, followed by six different Utes with one apiece. Four of those game winners also accounted for the first career goal for those players, including Taylor, Leslie Muirhead (vs. Idaho State), Avery Ford (vs. Weber State) and McKel Wall (vs. UC Riverside). The other winners came from Harley Spier (at Oregon) and Dudley (vs. Arizona State). With the strikes from Taylor, Ford and Wall, Utah has had three or more freshman secure gamewinning goals in the same season for the first time since Jen Christoffers, Adele Letro and Katy Reineke did so in Utes Strive for Top-Half Finish in Inaugural Pac-12 Campaign... After being selected to finish 11th out of 12 teams in the Pac-12 Preseason Coaches Poll, Utah could finish as high as fifth and no lower than seventh, based on the outcome of this Friday s conference games. With a win over Colorado and a California loss, the Utes would move up to the No. 5 spot in the league table with 18 points. Should California tie or win, Utah would place sixth. A Ute loss would leave them seventh, still far-exceeding their preseason prognostication. Stanford, the coaches selection to win the league, has locked up the championship in a runaway, heading into Friday with a perfect 10-0 record. Scouting this Weekend s Opposition... Colorado Buffaloes The Buffs have lost three consecutive games coming into Friday, including an 8-0 shutout at the hands of UCLA and a 1-0 shutout loss to USC last weekend. Amy Barczuk and Hayley Hughes each have three, while five other players have scored as well. Caroline Danneberg is the only Buffalo with multiple assists (2). During his tenure, Manning has established Utah Women s Soccer as an elite program in the west. He has coached the Utes to an NCAA Tournament berth in five of his nine years at the helm. Prior to joining the Pac-12, Manning also directed Utah to three Mountain West Conference regular-season championships (2003, 05, 06) and a pair of league tournament titles (2003, 04). Early on in the campaign, before injuries took a severe toll on the team, the Utes climbed to their first national ranking since 2006 after shutting out No. 19 Santa Clara, 1-0, reaching as high as No. 21 in the national polls. In 2008, Manning and the Utes took on a challenging schedule with one of his most youthful teams, featuring only two senior starters. After a slow beginning, Manning coached his team to an record, winning six of their last seven regular-season games to finish second in the conference. Additionally, Adele Letro became Utah s first player ever to be named an All-American. 8 Utah 0 Cal State Fullerton 0 Aug. 19, 2011 Titan Stadium Fullerton, Calif Game Summaries Utah 0 BYU 4 Aug. 23, 2011 South Field Provo, Utah The University of Utah women s soccer team (0-0-1) opened up the 2011 season with a 0-0 draw at Cal State Fullerton (0-0-1), Friday. Sophomore goalkeeper Cheyanne Mulcock, who came on at halftime, was the story of the game for the Utes as she made several key saves, including a pair of breakaway stops. Mulcock, whose strong effort in training camp earned some earlyseason playing time, came on at the half in place of senior Hannah Turpen and saved all four of Fullerton s attempts on goal, including two impressive stops on clear scoring opportunities. Just a few minutes into the second half, Fullerton sprung a player on a breakaway down the middle. The Titan decided to shoot around the top of the 18-yard box and Mulcock, who had come well off her line to cut down the angle, dove to her right for the highlight-reel save. With less than 15 minutes left in the game, Mulcock faced another wide-open shot, in fact a two-on-one against a pair of Titans, and managed to deflect the incoming shot with a quick right-leg kick-save. Just a couple minutes later, a 23-yard laser headed straight to the left post was snatched by Mulcock as well. Utah s best scoring chance of the contest came with less than three minutes remaining in the second overtime period as freshman forward Jill Robison drilled a right-footed cross from the right wing that sliced across the face of goal and pinged squarely off the goalpost, mere inches from giving the Utes a golden-goal victory in her collegiate debut. Manning and his staff showed confidence in their youthful squad as seven of the 11 starters were freshmen and sophomores, while four more underclassmen came on as substitutes. The Utes were out-shot in the contest, 11-5, with shots on goal going 4-0 for the Titans. Corner kicks were 2-1 in Fullerton s favor, while Utah committed 13 fouls to CSF s 10. Fullerton was whistled for seven offside infractions and the Utes were called for three. 1st 2nd OT 2OT Final Utah Cal State Fullerton Utah Turpen 45: Mulcock 65: Fullerton Maricic 110: Statistical Comparison Utah Fullerton Shots 5 11 Shots on Goal 0 4 Saves 4 0 Corner Kicks 1 2 Fouls Cautions/Ejections: none Attendance: 428 The University of Utah women s soccer team (0-1-1) fell at BYU (1-0-1) by a 4-0 score Tuesday in Provo. All four goals came in the second half after the two teams battled to a 0-0 halftime score. Both teams went to the break feeling unlucky to have not scored at least one goal. For the Utes, sophomore forward Jen Ericson beat BYU goalkeeper McKinzie Olson with a right-footed volley from 18 yards but rung it off the crossbar. Freshman Jill Robison, who made her first collegiate start at forward, followed up the effort but sent it sailing over the crossbar. BYU had several attempts clear the Utes crossbar as well, including a diving header from Carlee Payne. Utah s luck changed in the 58th minute when senior center back Lauren Dudley, who had already received a yellow card in the first half, was issued a second yellow, thus receiving an automatic red card and leaving the Utes with just 10 players. On the ensuing free kick, Jessica Ringwood drilled a 19-yard shot that hit the bottom of the crossbar just over the outstretched hand of Ute goalkeeper Hannah Turpen and into the net for the game s first tally. From there the dynamic of the game changed as Utah looked for the equalizer, sending players forward despite being reduced to just 10 players. BYU s second goal came off the foot of Auna Doria in the 65th minute, who received a pass from Lauren Crosby, took a good first touch around her defender and into the box, then hit a well-placed right-footed shot that found it s target, giving the Cougars a 2-0 lead. The third and fourth goals came from Jaiden Thornock and Niki Fernandes, respectively, both assisted by Jennie Marshall. Despite the 4-0 score line, head coach Rich Manning was pleased with his team s effort and the experience gained in the game. The Utes started four freshmen, with a total of six freshmen seeing action in the game. Of the 14 players who saw the field, 11 were freshmen and sophomores. The Utes play their first home game Sunday, Aug. 28, as Nevada comes to Ute Field for a 1 p.m. MT kickoff. Utah will be without the services of Dudley, who will serve a mandatory one-game suspension after receiving the red card. Senior center back Lauren Porter will also be questionable for the game after leaving the BYU contest with an unspecified knee injury. 9 Utah 0 Nevada 1 Aug. 28, 2011 Ute Field Salt Lake City 2011 Game Summaries Utah 0 Utah State 1 Sept. 2 Bell Field Logan, Utah The University of Utah women s soccer team (0-2-1) dropped its homeopener to Nevada (1-3-0) by a 1-0 score Sunday at Ute Field. Utah outshot the Wolfpack, 19-7 in the loss. Nevada s game-winning goal came in the 83rd minute after a turnover in the Utah defense allowed the Wolfpack to counter-attack. Aleina Dominguez got possession and played to Kori Disarufino at the top of the Utes penalty box. Disarufino turned on her defender and got to the inside, then took a left-footed shot that bent around the diving effort of Utah senior goalkeeper Hannah Turpen and into the bottom left corner for the game s only goal. Utah s hard luck continued on the offensive end, with the Utes still searching for their first goal of the season. Utah got off 19 shots, forcing Nevada goalkeeper Jenna Riddle to make four saves, and hit the frame three other times. Sophomore defender Jenny Hutton hit the crossbar in the 15th minute, freshman midfielder Ashton Hall hit it again in the 49th minute and freshman midfielder Katie Taylor hit the goalpost in the 51st minute of action. Utah also created several good opportunities on crosses into the box as well. Hutton and sophomore forward Jen Ericson tied with a game-high four shots each. Turpen finished the game with three saves, including another outstanding reaction-save from close range, diving to her right side early in the second half. Her counterpart, Riddle, made four stops. Despite the lopsided total shot count, shots on goal were even at 4-4. Utah earned four corner kicks to Nevada s two, while fouls went 9-3 against the Wolfpack. The Utes are back in action Friday, Sept. 2, as they head to Logan for a rivalry game at Utah State. Kickoff is slated for 4 p.m. MT. The University of Utah women s soccer team (0-3-1) fell at Utah State (5-0-0) by a 1-0 score Friday at Bell Field in Logan. After more than 84 minutes of scoreless soccer, Utah State broke through as Mari Miyashiro put away a rebounded ball following two very good saves from Ute senior goalkeeper Hannah Turpen. After Utah State won a free kick just outside the Utah penalty box, Kendra Pemberton stepped up and drilled a knuckling shot at Turpen. After Turpen made the initial save, Chelsie Sperry one-timed the rebound back at the goal but Turpen made a second stop from nearly point-blank range. That rebound fell in front of Miyashiro, who buried it for the game s only goal. For the fourth consecutive game, Utah hit the goal frame with a shot that could have drastically changed the outcome as, for the third time, sophomore forward Jen Ericson was denied by the goal post. The Utes also had a second-half ball than stopped rolling inches from the goal line and was cleared away by a scrambling Aggie defender. The Utes are still looking for their first goal of the season. Turpen, who finished the game with six saves, also made a point-blank stop in the first half as USU s Jade Tarver got on the end of a cross but couldn t get past Turpen. Her counterpart for Utah State, Molli Merrill, made three saves and earned her second consecutive shutout. Total shots went 14-7 in favor of the Aggies, with shots on goal going 7-3. Corner kicks were 2-1 for Utah, while fouls were whistled 14-9 against Utah State. The University of Utah women s soccer team improved to with a 2-1 neutral-site victory over UC Riverside (3-3-1) at the Saint Mary s Classic on Friday. All three Utes to log points in the game were true freshmen from the state of Utah, including McKel Wall, a native of West Haven, Utah, who scored the game winner. Wall put the Utes up 2-0 as she scored her first career goal by burying a 20-yard free kick from the top of UCR s penalty box, taking advantage of the set piece opportunity after sophomore Allie Wisner had drawn the foul. Wall became the first freshman since Lauren Porter, now the team s senior captain, to be credited with a game-winning goal for the Utes. Freshman forward Jill Robison, a product of Layton, Utah, gave the Utes a 1-0 lead in the 58th minute, breaking a scoreless tie with her first career goal. Freshman defender Sarah Duncan, who hails from Springville, Utah, fed the ball to Robison, who dribbled to her left and ripped a shot into the upper right corner. It was Duncan s first career assist. Wall and Robison combined to mark the first time since Oct. 3, 2007, that two Utah freshmen scored in the same game. It was also the second consecutive game in which at multiple Utah players recorded the first points of their careers. UC Riverside had cut Utah s lead to 2-1 in the 78th minute as Deborah Musa got on the end of a punt by goalkeeper Jessica Olafsen and onetimed a volley from 35 yards out that whistled into the net. 11 Utah 1 Saint Mary s 2 Sept. 11, 2011 Saint Mary s Stadium Moraga, Calif Game Summaries Utah 1 Weber State 0 Sept. 11, 2011 Ute Field Salt Lake City The University of Utah women s soccer team (2-4-1) fell at Saint Mary s (6-1-1) Sunday by a 2-1 score in the final game of the Saint Mary s Classic. The Utes only goal, which had tied the game at 1-1, came off the foot of freshman midfielder McKel Wall. With two goals in the tournament, including Friday s game winner, Wall was named to the All-Tournament Team. With the game tied 1-1 and just over three minutes remaining, Saint Mary s found its eventual game-winning goal as Jordan Marada, the team s leading scorer, claimed her fourth score of the year. The Gaels first goal came just two minutes into the game as Christina Tognetti buried a header off a corner kick by Marada to give the home team an early lead. Facing a 1-0 deficit with 20 minutes left in the game, Wall, the Ute hero who scored Friday s game-winner against UC Riverside, struck again as she scored from the top of the penalty box to tie the game at 1-1. Wall received the ball from redshirt sophomore Allie Wisner, who notched her first assist of the year. The Utes had three players named to the Saint Mary s Classic All-Tournament team, including Wall (2 goals), freshman forward Jill Robison (1 goal) and senior defender Lauren Dudley (2 shots on goal). Utah was outshot overall, with shots on goal even at six apiece. Corner kicks were 7-5 in SMC s favor, but the Gaels were whistled for 11 fouls to Utah s six. Utah sophomore goalkeeper Hannah Turpen made four saves in the contest, while her SMC counterpart, Kate Brenot, was credited with five. Saint Mary s improved to 5-1 at home, while Utah fell to on the road. Freshman midfielder Avery Ford delivered the game-winning goal for Utah women s soccer (3-4-1) Friday night as the Utes took down Weber State (1-6-0) by a 1-0 score at Ute Field. Ford became the third freshman to score her first career goal this year and the second to register a game winner. With the scored knotted at 0-0 in the 51st minute of play, Ford collected a Wildcat turnover nearly 35 yards from goal, stepped up and blasted a shot that snuck underneath the crossbar. Ford s goal marks the fourth consecutive scored by a freshman, a run that spans three games. Senior goalkeeper Hannah Turpen made a tremendous diving save with less than seven minutes remaining to preserve the win and log her first shutout of the year. Jessie Baddely, arguably Weber State s most dangerous player and a long-range specialist, had stepped up to take a free kick just outside the penalty box and hit a right-footed shot that was well struck, but Turpen was up to the task. Baddley finished with a game-high seven shots. Turpen finished the game with three saves, while her Weber State counterpart, Ryann Waldman, made four. The Wildcats were also credited with a team save as Utah freshman forward Katie Taylor had gotten past Waldman, only to have her shot cleared away by a scrambling WSU defender. Wildcat substitute Felicia Sorter also gave her squad two excellent scoring chances but rang the crossbar twice, once in each half. Weber State has now been shut out in five of its six losses on the year, all by 1-0 scores. Weber State out-shot Utah overall, 17-15, but shots on goal were 6-3 in the Utes favor. 12 Utah 3 Idaho State 1 Sept. 18, 2011 Ute Field Salt Lake City 2011 Game Summaries Utah 2 Oregon 0 Sept. 18, 2011 Ute Field Salt Lake City The University of Utah women s soccer team (4-4-1) completed a home weekend sweep with Sunday s 3-1 victory over Idaho State (3-5-1) to wrap up non-conference play and take a two-match win streak into it s Pac-12 opener. The game-winning goal came off the foot of sophomore midfielder Leslie Muirhead. Muirhead s goal snapped a 1-1 tie in the 36th minute and became the eventual game winner. After a nice buildup down the right wing, freshman forward Jill Robison crossed the ball into the penalty box, where Idaho State goalkeeper Carly Hutchings-Maloney came off her line to intercept it. She wasn t able to hold on to the ball and the deflection fell straight to Muirhead, who slid it into the net from six yards out for her first career goal. Muirhead became the eighth different Ute to score this season and the sixth to tally her first career goal. Furthermore, she became the fourth different Utah player to score a game winner this year and the third whose first career goal was also a game-winning strike. Utah had taken a 1-0 lead in the 19th minute as sophomore midfielder Harley Spier, known for her ability to win head balls on both ends of the field, blasted in a header off a corner kick from freshman midfielder McKel Wall, who earned her first assist of the year. It was Spier s first career goal as well. Senior forward Erin Dalley iced the game with a goal in the second half, her second of the year, after two well-played passes led to her left-footed onetimer from 14 yards out that ricocheted off the post and in. Freshman midfielder Ashton Hall had gotten possession and played it forward to Robison, who placed a one-touch layoff pass into the box for Dalley to run on to. Dalley beat the keeper and buried it for the 3-1 lead and eventual final score. Idaho State had pulled the game level at 1-1 less than two minutes after the Utes had taken their initial lead as Madeline Gochnour bent a 22-yard shot into the left side netting after the Utah defense turned it over deep in their defensive zone. Utah senior goalkeeper Hannah Turpen finished the game with three saves and was credited with the win. Sophomore Cheyanne Mulcock also got into the game in the Ute net, taking over for the last 23:44, and making one save as well. Hutchings-Maloney finished with five saves for Idaho State. For the second consecutive game, Utah was outshot overall but was more accurate statistically, as ISU led total shots 14-13, but shots-on-goal were 8-5 in favor of the Utes. The Bengals earned five corner kicks to Utah s two, but committed 11 fouls to only five for the U. The University of Utah women s soccer team (5-4-1, Pac-12) won its inaugural Pac-12 match Friday night, going on the road to defeat Oregon (5-4- 1, Pac-12) by a 2-0 score. Sophomores Harley Spier and Leslie Muirhead each scored for the second consecutive game, lifting the Utes to a win in front of the eighth-largest women s soccer crowd ever at Papé Field. Following a scoreless first half, Spier broke the tie in the 49th minute on a superb hustle play. After the Ducks committed a foul on their own half of the field, Utah senior defender Lauren Dudley stepped up and served the free kick into the penalty box. Freshman forward Jill Robison battled an Oregon defender and knocked it across the face of goal, where Spier fought through traffic and knocked it in from just a few yards out. It was Spier s second goal of the year as she has now scored in back-to-back games, while Robison has also posted an assist in two consecutive contests. Utah took a 2-0 lead in the 56th minute when senior forward Erin Dalley played a perfect ball to, who was making a straight run to goal. Muirhead took a touch forward, shielded her defender away from the ball and fired it into the upper left corner from the top of the penalty box. It was Muirhead s second goal of the season and the first assist for Dalley. Senior goalkeeper Hannah Turpen made three saves and earned her second shutout of the season. Her Oregon counterpart, Abby Steele, made two saves while conceding both goals. In addition to logging its first-ever Pac-12 win, the game also marked Utah s first Pac-12 road victory and its first Pac-12 shutout. It was the Utes third consecutive win and their fourth victory in their last five games. Oregon out-shot Utah overall, 10-6, but the Utes put four shots-on-goal to the Ducks three.
