Oct. 11, 2015 at W&M William & Mary 1, UNCW 0 UNCW CONTINUES QUEST FOR CAA TITLE WITH SEMIFINAL GAME AGAINST WILLIAM & MARY After posting their fourth consecutive shutout with a victory over Delaware in the quarterfinals, the third-seeded Seahawks continue their path to a Colonial Athletic Association championship on Friday night by facing second-seeded William & Mary in a semifinal game at Hofstra Soccer Stadium. The Seahawks, who have played their last four games at home, blanked Delaware by a 4-0 margin in the quarterfinals at UNCW Soccer Stadium. Meanwhile, the Tribe has been idle since ending the regular season with a 2-0 victory over Elon on Oct. 27. The winner of Friday s semifinal will advance to the championship game on Sunday afternoon and face either top-seeded Hofstra or fourthseeded James Madison at 2:30 p.m. A live video broadcast will be available via the Seahawk Digital Network at UNCWSports.com. John Daly Career Record: Record at William & Mary:...Same Record vs. UNCW: Senior forward Maddie McCormick posted her fourth multi-goal game of the season with two goals in the quarterfinal win against Delaware. UNCW CAA TOURNAMENT QUICK HITS The Seahawks are making their 14th appearance in the CAA Tournament. It will be their first time in the postseason since 2013 when they lost to Hofstra in the CAA quarterfinals. UNCW s 14 appearances in the CAA Tournament are tied with Virginia Commonwealth for the third-most by a school. James Madison and William & Mary have each made 19 trips to the CAA Tournament since The Seahawks are all-time in the CAA Tournament and will be aiming to earn their first win in the tournament since claiming the 2009 CAA title with a 1-0 victory over James Madison. UNCW earned its first-ever CAA Tournament home win with Sunday s 4-0 victory over Delaware. The four goals were also the most scored by the Seahawks in their CAA Tournament history. The Seahawks will be trying to advance to the CAA semifinals for the first time since It would also be the Seahawks sixth semifinal appearance. UNCW will be playing its eighth game as the No. 3 seed when the Seahawks face William & Mary on Friday night. The Seahawks are all-time in the tournament as the No. 3 seed. The Seahawks have been involved in three penalty kick shootouts in their CAA Tournament history and have won all three times. They edged East Carolina, 6-5, in a penalty kick shootout in the 1996 first round before defeating Delaware and Drexel in back-to-back shootouts in the 2012 tournament. The four head coaches in this weekend s tournament have combined to win 1,030 games at their schools. SERIES NOTES William & Mary holds a commanding advantage in the all-time series against the Seahawks. The Tribe has won the last two meetings in the series after edging UNCW by a 1-0 margin on Oct. 11 at Martin Family Stadium in Williamsburg. UNCW s lone win over the Tribe came on Oct. 20, 2013 when the Seahawks earned a 3-0 road victory. Friday s semifinal game is the second all-time meeting between the two teams in the CAA Tournament. William & Mary earned a 4-0 victory over the Seahawks in the 1999 CAA semifinals in Virginia Beach, Va.

It is the Seahawks highest ranking in the Mid-Atlantic Poll since earning the No. 4 position in the Sept. 4, 2012 poll. Five UNCW players - seniors Maddie McCormick, Katrina Guillou, Stephanie Bronson and Morgan Leyble along with junior Madison Melnick - were listed among the top 20 players in the CAA by Top Drawer Soccer two weeks ago. The five selections were the most of any team in the CAA. After finishing with a record in the CAA, the Seahawks finished in the top four of the league s standings for the fifth time in the program s history. It is UNCW s best finish in the league since 2012 when the Seahawks finished third in the standings. The Seahawks set a program record by winning their 14th game of the season in the CAA quarterfinal win over Delaware, eclipsing the mark set in 2006 and The Seahawks had also set a school record with 13 regular season wins this season. After opening the season with three losses in their first four games, the Seahawks are in their last 16 games and have outscored their opponents by a commanding margin with nine shutouts. The Seahawks set a school record by posting their fourth straight shutout in Sunday s 4-0 triumph over Delaware. They have not allowed a goal in the last 413 minutes, 27 seconds dating back to the first half of their 1-0 loss at William & Mary on Oct. 11. The shutout streak of 413 minutes, 27 seconds is the longest shutout streak in school history. UNCW had set a school record earlier this year by holding opponents scoreless for 362 minutes, 30 seconds from Sept The Seahawks are the only team in the CAA without a loss on its home field this year, boasting a mark at UNCW Soccer Stadium. UNCW, which has outscored its opponents by a 26-4 margin at home, is the first CAA team to go unbeaten at home since Drexel in Junior goalkeeper Carolyn Huddy added to her school single-season record by earning her ninth shutout against Delaware on Sunday. She has surpassed the previous mark of seven clean sheets held by Caitlin Hunter in In addition, it was the 12th solo shutout of Huddy s career, which ranks fifth in school history. 4 Senior forward Maddie McCormick, who enters this weekend as the CAA leader with 14 goals, tallied a leaguehigh eight goals against CAA opponents during the regular season. She also led the league by recording 19 of her 33 points against league foes. McCormick has a chance to become the first UNCW player to lead the CAA in goals since Stephanie Rose had 14 goals in Rose also led the league with 40 points that year. UNCW is now over the last two years when scoring at least two goals, including a mark this year. The Seahawks have scored two or more goals in a school-record 16 games this season, which leads all NCAA Division I teams through games of Nov. 1. The Seahawks have also scored at least two goals in 14 of their last 15 games, including a school-record 10 consecutive games from Sept. 6 to Oct. 9. The Seahawks lead the CAA and rank fifth in NCAA Division I with 48 goals through 20 games. The 48 goals scored this year are the third-highest single-season total in school history. With 135 points, the Seahawks enter this weekend s games as the CAA leader. The 135 points, which rank seventh in the nation through games of Nov. 3, also rank as the second-highest total in school history. The Seahawks senior class has guided UNCW to 42 wins over the last four years, which is tied for the third-highest total in school history with the Class of Only the Class of 2009 (47) and Class of 2010 (43) have more wins. UNCW s senior class has accounted for 37 of the team s 48 goals this season after scoring all four goals in the Seahawks win over Delaware on Sunday. Seniors Maddie McCormick and Katrina Guillou have combined to score 24 of the team s 48 goals this year. Led by junior goalkeeper Carolyn Huddy, UNCW has five players who have played 1,700 or more minutes this year. Huddy ranks fourth in the CAA with 1,817 minutes played while senior Morgan Leyble (1,805) and junior Madison Melnick (1,797) follow in fifth and seventh place in the CAA in minutes played, respectively. The Seahawks have scored 16 of their 48 goals in the first 30 minutes of a game, including seven goals in the opening 15 minutes. UNCW has not allowed a goal in the first half in 15 of its 20 games. The Seahawks have outscored their opponents by a 22-8 margin in the opening stanza. ULRICH, BRONSON EARN SPOTS ON ACADEMIC ALL-DISTRICT TEAMS Junior midfielder Kennedy Ulrich and senior midfielder Stephanie Bronson of UNCW have been named to the 2015 CoSIDA Academic All-District 3 Teams as selected by the College Sports Information Directors of America. Ulrich was named as a First-Team Academic All-District selection while Bronson earned a spot on the Second-Team. By receiving First-Team Academic All-District distinction, Ulrich advances to the CoSIDA Academic All-America Team ballot. The Academic All-America teams will be announced in late November. A Biology major with a 3.96 grade point average, Ulrich has started 13 of 18 games this season for UNCW this year. She has contributed four goals with three assists, including a goal in back-to-back games against Towson and College of Charleston to finish the regular season. The Lloydminster, Alberta, Canada, native has started 29 games over the last two years and has tallied six goals with seven assists in her career. A starter in 19 of 20 games this season, Bronson is the Seahawks third-leading scorer with six goals and four assists, including a team-high four game-winning goals. She helped UNCW clinch the No. 3 seed in the Colonial Athletic Association Tournament by scoring a goal with an assist in the Seahawks 4-0 win over College of Charleston. Bronson, who boasts a 3.81 grade point average in Mathematics, has scored 16 goals with 9 assists in three seasons after transferring from NC State while starting 58 of 61 contests. WHAT S AHEAD FOR THE SEAHAWKS If the Seahawks advance to the CAA championship game, they will face either top-seeded Hofstra or fourth-seeded James Madison on Sunday afternoon at Hofstra Soccer Stadium. Opening kick-off for the championship game will be at 2:30 p.m. and the game will be broadcast on the American Sports Network. The Seahawks and the Pride would be meeting for the 19th time in a series Hofstra leads by a margin. In addition, it would be the fourth CAA Tournament affair between the two teams. UNCW ended a seven-game winless streak against the Pride on Oct. 2 with a 2-1 victory in overtime at Hofstra Soccer Stadium. Senior Maddie McCormick netted both goals, including the game-winner in the 92nd minute, as the Seahawks earned their first win at Hofstra since There have been six overtime games played in the series between UNCW and Hofstra and 11 meetings decided by a goal or less. The Seahawks and the Dukes would square off for the 26th all-time meeting in a series JMU leads by a margin. However, UNCW posted a 3-0 victory over the Dukes in the regular season meeting at UNCW Soccer Stadium on Oct. 16. James Madison and UNCW have met three previous times in the CAA Tournament with the Dukes earning two of the three wins. Cairney's place at UNCW is secure By Eric Detweiler StarNews Staff Published: Saturday, October 31, 2015 at 4:00 p.m. The meaning of Paul Cairney's trusted catchphrase molds to the situation: Where else would you rather be? The question draws groans from his UNCW women's soccer players in the predawn chill of spring workouts and the simmering morning heat of preseason conditioning. No answer necessary. It's both a locker room greeting on game day and an often-necessary dose of perspective during a marathon bus ride or following a difficult loss. Other times, it's a reminder to savor the good times that pass by all too quickly in a four-year college career. Cairney's rhetorical motto is fitting. The Scotland native has been here since the beginning and built the program brick by brick into a regular Colonial Athletic Association contender over his two decades as head coach. He's provided an unspoken reply to his own query with his faithful commitment to his alma mater. The result, so far, is 194 wins and a slew of milestones, great and small. The CAA Tournament, starting with a home game Sunday against Delaware, provides the next chance to add on. Not that the 48-year-old Cairney has spent much time considering his legacy this fall. It's double 10, I guess, Cairney said with a grin. I don't think about it. I really don't. Every year is like the first year. We just keep trying to do our best. START SOMEWHERE UNCW is far from a women's soccer powerhouse, but the program has made strides since its inception in Cairney was on the sideline, a graduate student only months removed from his career as a defender on the men's team. The low point in the transition from club ball was a 15-0 loss to national power William & Mary that inaugural season. A $30,000 recruiting budget made the job even more difficult. While men's coach Keith Cammidge was officially in charge of both programs at the start, Cairney led women's training often. He was officially elevated into the top spot for the 1996 season at age 28. Cairney learned to be a coach on the fly. He gleaned the mechanics of running a program by watching more established leaders from afar, like William & Mary's John Daly and James Madison's Dave Lombardo.
