Join the club event to Cedar Lake Cellars Winery for a pleasant half-hour drive and social get-together. We will meet at the west end of the Taubman Prestige Outlet Mall parking lot (17057 N. Outer 40 Road, Chesterfield) at 10:15 am and plan to leave at 10:30 am for about a 30 minute caravan to the winery where we have a tent reserved for our group. We can then socialize and enjoy the camaraderie, sample wines, and get some food at our leisure. This is a very nice setting with views of the lake & vineyards. There may even be some music for additional entertainment. MAGIC CHEF MANSION TOUR & JOHN MCGURK S IRISH PUB St. Louis, MO Sunday, August 13 th Join us on Sunday, August 13 th, when we join together for a tour of the impressive Magic Chef Mansion. The mansion is located at 3400 Russell Blvd., St. Louis, in the historical Compton Hill area. Be sure to take notice of all the other beautiful mansions in this historical district, when driving to the mansion. Our tour will begin at 1:30 p.m. Parking will be available on the driveway around the mansion. The cost of the tour will be $15 per person, which you will pay at the door. Festivities will kick off at 1:00 and the food will be served around 2:00. Kirkwood Park is located at 111 South Geyer Road. Our lunch menu will be all-inclusive. Drinks will include water, tea, lemonade, and of course, beer and wine. Whether old or new, clean up and shine your favorite Mercedes for our Show & Shine! Trophies will be awarded to the three cars that gather the most votes by attendees. Special Thanks to Judy & Greg Mueller for planning our May Event, "Garden of Glass", the art of Craig Mitchell Smith, at the Botanical Gardens. We all enjoyed the 30 displays in the Climatron and our nice walk around the Japanese Gardens. The chocolate that Judy provided us at lunch was a special treat. Most Important, it didn't rain!! On June 4 th we participated in the 30 th Annual European Auto Show held at the Taubman Prestige Outlet Mall with over 200 participants. We want to congratulate Rodger Van Ness for winning the Mercedes-Benz class. Weather was hot, but everyone had a great time. Special Thanks to Kay and Bob Frank for hosting this event for us and bringing water. Looking forward to our next event July 15 th at Cedar Lake Winery. Also, Roy Dreiling will be there to talk about the latest technology on the new Mercedes. A Tech Session in their Service Department will take place, and there will be Food and Prizes. 5 Botanical Gardens Tour/Lunch, St Louis - Saturday May 20th, 2017 The Missouri Botanical Gardens was the location for our St Louis Gateway Section event on May 20th. We had about twenty five members gather in the Sassafras Cafe for lunch and fun conversation before touring the Gardens. At the table each couple also received a delicious treat from the Chocolate Chocolate Company. After lunch we headed to the Climatron for the wonderful Craig Mitchell Smith art display. The art display included larger than-life fused glass exhibits, including colorful glass orchids, orange blossoms, dandelions and more, flourishing amid the lush, tropical setting of the Climatron. Although the weather had been a concern it turned out to be a great day for "a walk in the gardens". Our special thanks to Judy and Greg Mueller for coordinating and hosting this excellent event! 7 30th Annual St Louis European Auto Show - Sunday, June 4th, 2017 With an early morning sprinkle, the 30th Annual St. Louis European Auto Show got under way on Sunday, June 4th at The Taubman Prestige Outlets in Chesterfield, MO. The day turned out great and no rain fell during the show. Once again there were a large number of European cars at the show. The turnout from the Mercedes section ended up with over 20 cars registering. The show spectator turnout was equally good with crowds at least as big as last year. We had several prospective new members stop by the St. Louis Gateway Section tent and a couple of vendors expressing interest in placing ads in our newsletter. Club member Rodger Van Ness won the Best Mercedes award with his SE. The show proceeds go to the work of STL Arc, which is a local St. Louis charity whose mission is to empower people with intellectual and developmental disabilities and their families to lead better lives. In addition, our section also donated $500 to the St. Louis ARC. All in all, it was a fine day for the St. Louis Gateway Section and ARC, the sponsored charity. 8 MERCEDES-BENZ HONORS 90 TH BIRTHDAY OF MILLE MIGLIA June 5, 2017, by Sports Car Digest mille-miglia-photos/ To celebrate the landmark 90 th anniversary of the Mille Miglia, Mercedes-Benz Classic entered a total of ten vehicles at the 2017 historic endurance rally. Between May 18 th and 21 st, they joined a great selection of classic Mercedes-Benz cars from various eras that competed in the famous road race. success of the Stuttgart racing team at the Mille Miglia of Back then, Stirling Moss and Denis Jenkinson drove the 300 SLR racing car (W 196 S) to overall victory. And with the standard 300 SL Gullwing, Mercedes-Benz also dominated the Gran Turismo class over 1300 cc displacement in that successful racing season. Mercedes-Benz has been involved with the Mille Miglia since 1930, so virtually since the first event. Back then, factory driver Rudolf Caracciola, with his co-driver Christian Werner, entered in a Mercedes-Benz SSK and promptly finished in 6 th place. One year later, Caracciola won the Mille Miglia in 1931, as the first non-italian driver, with his co-pilot Wilhelm Sebastian, in a Mercedes-Benz SSKL. This triumph, in the era of the supercharged racing touring cars, was remembered in 2017 with the participation of a Mercedes-Benz SSK from Mercedes-Benz Classic. The year 1956 is further recalled with two additional Mercedes-Benz vehicles in the 2017 Mille Miglia. In a Mercedes-Benz 220a (W 180), Christian Boucke, head of Mercedes-Benz Classic, was at the wheel, together with Bernd Mayländer, regular driver of the Safety Car in the Formula 1 World Championship. In 1956, Erwin Bauer and Erwin Grupp won their class driving a vehicle of this model. The racing version of the Mercedes-Benz 190 SL (W 121) also took part in the regularity run. With no less than six 300 SL Gullwing (W 198) models, Mercedes-Benz Classic also celebrated the outstanding Participants in the 2017 Mille Miglia completed four stages, from Brescia to Rome & back. In the tracks of the legendary road race, the organizers chose a clockwise route. On May 18 th, the cars started in Brescia and headed west, past Lake Garda to Padua. The May 19 th stage then ran south through San Marino onto Rome. In the capital, the peleton embarked on the third stage on May 20 th, northwards to Parma. 16 OWN THE NIGHT: Tips for Driving After Dark Popular Mechanics Plenty of us hate night driving there's no feeling quite like getting someone else's high beams shined in your eyes. But beyond the pure annoyance, few of us realize how dangerous it can be. Fatalities on the road occur at a rate three times greater at night than during the day, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. While only a quarter of all driving is done at night, more than half of all driving deaths occur then. But we can't just sit around waiting for the sun to come up. Here are some tips to keep you safe on the road when the sun goes down. Aim Your Headlights We've found that headlights, even in brand-new cars, are sometimes uneven or pointed lower than necessary. So it's worth the effort to aim them correctly. If you do it yourself, use the instructions in your owner's manual. And be patient. It may take a few tries before you have them pointed perfectly. Just make sure those newly aimed lights are not blinding oncoming traffic. Dim Your Instrument Panel and Dash Lights Cars come with dashboard dimmer switches for a reason. If you're driving around with the dash light on max, you could be compromising your forward vision. Racers take the nighttime driving seriously in fact, endurance racers and rally drivers cover their dashboards with black felt to avoid stray reflections. While you shouldn't do that in a road car, turn down the dash brightness quite a bit. Don't Wear the Wrong Glasses Have you seen ads proclaiming that yellow-tint sunglasses will help you see better at night? Don't believe them. The Sunglass Association of America says that yellow-lens glasses sold for night driving only make you think you see better. Don't Stare at Oncoming Lights Bright lights can seriously disrupt your concentration at night. Inside the car, your eyes are used to the dim glow of the instrument panel and the dark road ahead. It's very easy to become distracted and stare into a bright road sign or the headlights of an 18-wheeler headed your way without even realizing it. Turn your gaze away from other lights on the road, and don't look at oncoming high beams. Even though you may sometimes find yourself trying to determine if that oncoming car's high beams are on, or if they're just misaimed, look away. If a car behind you has its high beams on, often you can move your rearview mirror to reflect light backward to alert the driver, and to get the reflection away from your own eyes.
