Our annual Sunday Brunch by The Sea has been an ongoing success with our members for a number of years and with good reason. What better way to spend a Sunday morning than enjoying the tropical garden setting, the sound of the surf and the flight of various seabirds over the glistening Pacific. The Shoals Restaurant will have a special menu from which to make your selection. Only the freshest of ingredients are used in the preparation of the food. The seasonings are flavorful and innovative. The flavors and textures of the cuisine are enhanced by the beautiful presentation of each entrée. We will pay individually and the tip will be included in your food check. Plan to join us and bring your friends for a scenic drive along the beautiful shoreline of the Pacific Ocean. We are once again co-hosting with the Camarillo Airport Museum where you'll have shelter from the elements in the comfort of the museum airplane hangar. This is a potluck event. Bring your favorite appetizer, salad, side dish or a dessert. Members may bring their own wine or beer. The club will provide soft drinks, cups, ice and utensils. We will be dining in the hangar. It is important to respond by January 10th in order to reserve your spot as this year we are limited to 40 cars. We are pleased to announce there will be more opportunities for trophies this year. In Pursuit of the Perfect Idle My 1958 220s was purchased as a fixer upper. It was a barn find for sure! Nothing worked on the car and if it did just barely.

Finally, after a long and frustrating search, I discovered there was a short in the wiring and fixed it.

6 In Pursuit of the Perfect Idle My s was purchased as a fixer upper. It was a barn find for sure! Nothing worked on the car and if it did just barely. It would flat out quit running in the middle of the road. For a while, I went nowhere without the tow guy s phone number close to me and a water bottle in case he was busy. Finally, after a long and frustrating search, I discovered there was a short in the wiring and fixed it. The next goal I had was to one day rebuild some carburetors I had bought to get a smooth idle and to be able to coast so, like the "mad" knight Don Quixote, I started the quest to figure out how it could be done. Not being a mechanic and relatively new to the world of older cars I had a lot of questions so I started asking. The first obstacle was locating the rebuilding kits with new diaphragms, washers, gaskets, seals and such. After locating all of these items on my laptop, I wanted some expert advice so I went to Dieter s for his assessment of the information and pictures I had taken. He verified they were the correct ones. I ordered them and awaited the arrival of my package with a sense of elation. Upon arrival of my package, the elation turned into depression when looking through the bag of parts. This was not going to be a do it yourself project. It needed to be done by someone who knew what they were doing, or at least had done it before. I got on line and looked at places that rebuilt carburetors. After a few calls and some phone interviews, I took the carburetors to a carburetor shops in Oxnard. They explained that the carburetors would be completely taken apart, cleaned, reassembled and tested. I felt confident and left the carburetors with their capable hands. A few days later I got the call that the carburetors were ready. WOW they looked new. I should have been prepared for the last little detail of reaching my objective When I brought my beautiful carburetors home, I realized that after all I had been through installing them, they also should also be done by an expert. Although I was depressed, I called the shop and took the car and carburetors back to them. Needless to say, I am no longer depressed, it is Happy Motoring for my 220s. A lot of people asked me why I wanted to rebuild the carburetors, especially when the car was running, maybe not perfectly, but running. I don t know the answer yet but I will give it some thought while I work on the heater system and radio. Peter Samaha Page 6
