1 GATEWAY NEWS MERCEDES-BENZ CLUB OF AMERICA SAINT LOUIS GATEWAY SECTION 2013 MBCA SECTION OF THE YEAR Gateway News September/October 2017 ANNUAL FALL PICNIC SHOW & SHINE CAR SHOW Scout Shelter Pavilion, Kirkwood Park Saturday, September 23 rd (NOTE: DATE CHANGED FROM ORIGINAL CALENDAR) Please plan to join us on Saturday, September 23 rd for our Annual Fall Picnic. Festivities will kick off at 1:00 and the food will be served around 2:00. Kirkwood Park is located at 111 South Geyer Road. Our lunch menu will be all-inclusive. Drinks will include water, tea, lemonade, and of course, beer and wine. Whether old or new, clean up and shine your favorite Mercedes for our Show & Shine! Trophies will be awarded to the three cars that gather the most votes by attendees. To attend, please mail a $10/person check, made payable to: MBCA, St. Louis Gateway Section, to Frank Perry, 415 Allen Drive, Florissant, MO RSVP to Frank at frankperry401@msn.com or , no later than September 18 th, so that food and other arrangements can be finalized. SPRINGFIELD TOUR Springfield, IL Saturday-Sunday, October 7 th -8 th Join us for a road trip to Springfield, IL which will include a tour of Isringhausen Mercedes, a visit to the Lincoln Presidential Library & Museum, and a wonderful dinner at Saputos. We will leave at 9:15 am from 1st Bank at Olive Blvd, Creve Coeur with a stop at the Troy, Gateway News September/October 2017 Page 1 Volume 45 Issue 5 IL rest area on I-55 at 9:45 am. From there we ll be driving directly to Isringhausen Imports at 229 East Jefferson, Springfield Illinois At Isringhausen we ll be served a complimentary lunch and have a tour of the facility. After the tour please feel free to check into your room at the Abe Lincoln Springfield Doubletree located at 701 E Adams St, Springfield, IL. It Is Critical That You Call In Your Hotel Reservation By September 14th And Book Under The Mercedes Club Block (Otherwise Noted As MCB). Rate is $129 with breakfast. Join us for happy hour in the lounge in the 5PM range. Dinner reservations are at 6:30 PM at Saputos, which is within walking distance from the hotel. Sunday, after breakfast and checkout, we will tour the Presidential Library & Museum around the 1:00 PM. Feel free to enjoy any other Lincoln sites at your leisure. ANNUAL PLANNING MEETING Mercedes-Benz of St. Louis Monday, November 6 th This year s planning meeting will be held at Mercedes Benz of St. Louis located at 1048 Hampton Ave, St. Louis, MO. The meeting will be from 5:30 pm to 8:00 pm. This is an important meeting where ideas for our 2018 events will be discussed and the events decided on. We had a great turnout last year and we encourage all of our Section members to attend. Food and drinks will be provided. The Annual Picnic, our overnight event in Springfield, Illinois, the Planning Meeting, and our Annual Christmas Party are all planned events still to come in And, the first event of 2018 will be the New Year s Brunch on January 7 th at Bravo s Restaurant at West County Shopping Center. Special Thanks to Jerry Wille for hosting the Cedar Lake Winery Event, Sonny Sterthman for the Magic Chef Mansion Tour, and Mercedes-Benz of Chesterfield s (Formerly Plaza West) Matt McGoogan and Dan Rapp for the informative Tech Session and lunch. 5 Cedar Lake Cellars Winery Tour, Wright City, MO, Saturday, July 15th, 2017 We had a great turnout for the Cedar Lake Cellars Winery visit on Saturday, July 15th, with over 40 members and guests in attendance. The weather was outstanding for July, as it was cool enough for the convertible drivers to have their tops down on the drive out to the winery. The Cedar Lake folks allowed the club to park on the grass under the shade of trees with just a short walk to our tent, reserved for our group, which had views of the lake and vineyards. We then sampled some great wines and purchased some excellent food from the kitchen. With food and drink in hand the conversation flowed freely. As a special treat, Steve and Marti Jacquemin brought a surprise cake to celebrate the birthday of our Regional Director, Rick Siefert (his age remains a secret). 8 A MESSAGE FROM YOUR CENTRAL REGIONAL DIRECTOR Hello again to ALL Central Region Section members! It s been a while since I have sent a message out to everyone, but wanted to let you know what Patti and I have been doing over the past number of months, along with some exciting news and updates. It seems like a long time ago, but in March, a number of us from the St. Louis Gateway Section joined many MBCA members throughout the country for the fabulous Amelia Island Concours D Elegance, which included a super Cars & Coffee and, should I be allowed to say?, an exceptional Porsche Werks Reunion. To top off a wonderful four days on the island, I was honored to be included with some of our other National Officers, in attending the Mercedes-Benz Cocktail Reception & Gala Dinner, honoring Al Unser, Sr. In April, four Central Region Sections participated in the Natchez Euro Fest Classic European Automotive & Motorcycle Show. This show continues to be a first-class event, managed and directed by our own Mississippi Section President, Mike Marsh. In June, St. Louis Gateway Section members once again had an impressive showing of their M-B s at the St. Louis European Auto Show, now in it s 30 th year of existence. A number of new MBCA members were recruited and Patti & I enjoyed having Indianapolis Section President, Ken Koehler, join us for the Show. The Memphis Section had a very fun Concours d Ordinaire on July 22 nd, at Cliff & Linda Reyle s beautiful home. There was an excellent turnout of members and a multitude of cool cars! The barbecue cookout and wide array of side dishes and desserts made for a great summer get-together. August brought Patti and I to Colorado Springs and a visit to the MBCA s National Business Office. We enjoyed spending time with our Executive Director, Mike Regennitter, Administrative Services Manager, Cindy Tumbleson, and the rest of the staff. FANTASTIC NEWS! Our own Central Region s, Cincinnati Section, was recently selected by the National Awards Committee as the 2016 Section-of-the-Year! Congratulations are extended to President, Peter Emslander, Vice-President, David Hagood, and the rest of their board and members! On a final note, all MBCA members have the opportunity to elect two Directors at Large and four Regional Directors to the National Board, one of which is yours truly. A mail-in ballot will be included in the upcoming September/October Star magazine. Please support your national board members by taking a few minutes to vote and mail in your ballot. 13 Magic Chef Mansion Tour & John McGurk s Irish Pub, Sunday, August 13th, 2017 On Sunday, August 13th, members of the St. Louis Gateway Section met at the Magic Chef Mansion for a special group tour of this great piece of St. Louis history. The Magic Chef Mansion is also known as the Stockstrom House for the family who built it and lived there from 1908 to Charles Stockstrom co-owned the Quick Meal Stove Company, later renamed the Magic Chef, the largest stove maker in the world at that time. This French Renaissance Revival Mansion features 30-plus rooms and was built in a one year time period for $49,500. In 1990, Shelley Donaho purchased the house and started a complete restoration of the home, acquiring back some of the original items from the home which had been sold at a weeklong public auction prior to the house sale. The home s owner, Shelley, and friend Eric took our group on a one and a half hour tour of this magnificent 12,000 sq. ft. mansion. After the tour the group headed down the street to John McGruk s Irish Pub for drinks, food, and lively conversation. Our thanks to Sonny and Carol Sterthman for hosting this great event. Following the conclusion of the 2018 season, Mercedes will quit the German tin-top series in order to join the Formula E grid for the series sixth season as the Stuttgart-based company reshuffles its motorsports strategy. Since Mercedes joined DTM in 1988, the brand has won 10 driver s championships, 13 team titles, and six manufacturer awards. Not to mention 183 race wins, 128 pole positions, and a further 540 podiums. Unfortunately for DTM, the touring cars carry next to no road relevance or marketing value for Mercedes new EQ Power sub-brand that has begun appearing alongside AMG on the side of the company s Formula 1 cars. Dr. Jens Thiemer, VP of marketing at Mercedes-Benz, called Formula E an emotional spin to our EQ technology. Gateway News September / October 2017 Page 17

17 MERCEDES-AMG IS REINVENTING ITSELF TO DEVELOP ELECTRIFIED By Jason Siu - August 14, 2017 The AMG performance brand is no stranger to electrified powertrains, as it worked previously on the SLS AMG Electric Drive. But that project was a bit special at the time, and now reality is settling in that series production vehicles will be electrified. And since the sub-division works closely with Mercedes on the development of new road cars, AMG is able to ensure future models can be adapted into performance vehicles. Speaking to Autocar, Mercedes-AMG s Director of Vehicle Development, Drummond Jacoy, confirmed the brand has to reinvent itself when it comes to electric cars. It s not starting from scratch, but we re going to have to look at what the AMG story is with an electric vehicle. But we re working on that. More importantly, Jacoy acknowledges Mercedes-AMG isn t going to make the world happy with V8s for the next 200 years, so a focus on electrified powertrains is almost a necessity. The company is already working on a couple hybrid projects, including the GT Four Door previewed by a concept earlier this year in Geneva. It is also involved with an upcoming hypercar dubbed Project One that will have a powertrain derived from Formula 1 technology. Gateway News September / October Page 18
