1 Show Time Concours 2005 By Jim Morton, Carolina Jaguar Club Concours Chair , Each year CJC holds a car show, commonly called Concours or more formally a Concours d Elegance. The shows are a lot of fun, we have a great social time, judge our cars and award lots of trophies. CJC President Havner Parish has expressed his hope that every club member will consider joining CJC for this special annual event. Planning to Come? In past years we have cooperated with the Triad Austin-Healy club at Tanglewood, W. NC British Car club in Hendersonville, Euro2001, Carolina A-H club in Salisbury, and the Triumph Club of the Carolinas at their Reynolda Village show in Winston-Salem. This year, Reynolda is being renovated, but that has brought us a great new opportunity. On April 23 we ll join the Triumph Club at Shelton Vineyards near the mountains and Dobson, midway between Mt. Airy and Elkin. Established in 1999 by successful Charlotte builders, Shelton is the largest vineyards in the Yadkin Valley and a beautifully landscaped area. I can report their wines are winning awards and are quite good. And they ll treat you to a tour and free tasting session. The Triumph Club has made Jaguar their featured marque this year so we hope for a big turnout. This year Jaguar celebrates the fiftieth anniversary of the Mark I small sedan a D-Type win at LeMans. Scott Jaguar of Charlotte and Jaguar Cars are our generous sponsors. Saturday Concours: Concours d Elegance historically are shows of the best and elegant cars. Every Jaguar certainly fits that description. Our goal is to fill the field with the cars we are proud of, whether they are daily drivers or specially restored. All have an equal chance at going home with hardware, trophies to some of us. All you have to do is wash and wax your car really well and show up. Give some thought to competing for prizes awarded by Jaguar Clubs of N. America to members scoring high in 2 or 3 JCNA-sanctioned concours events this year. Besides our sanctioned April show CJC has included the special JCNA event near Atlanta in its fall schedule. So if you go to the concours in Richmond, Gatlinburg, Atlanta or Charleston you ve done it. CJC members won 12 JCNA prizes last year. Our prizes will be awarded on a simplified scoring system designed to generate a relative score and reduce time requirements of the judges. Details are attached. And entrants will be eligible for the popular-judging prizes sponsored by the host Triumph Club. Being judged to JCNA standards, which is more demanding but produces an absolute score comparable with scores from other events, is optional at extra cost and REQUIRES pre-registration. JCNA trophies will be awarded to those so judged. Be sure to register on the Triumph Club form for the BBQ dinner to be catered at Shelton Vineyards. This is the planned dinner activity. 2 Sunday Slalom: Sunday morning, April 24 is slalom time for the Gathering weekend, and we hope more of you will try this fun event. Slalom, or autocross as it is sometimes known, is a low speed race around traffic cones in a parking lot. Cars run one at a time, so you cannot hurt your baby, and speeds are low so you don t spend your Christmas budget on new tires. This is a great chance to experience the handling capabilities of your car without the expenses of really racing. CJC is staging the slalom event but it is meant to be part of the Gathering and open to all cars. The 62 Jaguar clubs associated with the Jaguar Clubs of N. America (JCNA) use a standard slalom course so times can be compared across our whole organization. On the tight course, shown at the end of this brochure, maximum speed is about 40 and the average is about 25 mph. Being able to maintain your momentum through the corners with smooth driving is far more important than horsepower. And being able to remember which of three laps you are on and which path to follow can be a challenge. For Jaguar drivers who request it slalom times will be forwarded to JCNA, but you don t need a Jaguar or be a member of a Jaguar club to run in the event. We will convene at the Training area at Surry Community College (SCC) on the south side of Dobson Sunday morning starting around 9 a.m. Have gas in your car, but not necessarily a full tank, and pump your tires up to perhaps psi before you arrive. We need volunteers to help run this operation smoothly so come early if you will, and notify Dave Eckrote on Saturday that you can help. To find the SCC Training area navigate yourself to downtown Dobson. From Elkin-Jonesville go north on I-77 to exit 93-Dobson and go east into town to Main St. which runs N-S. From Mt. Airy go south on Rt. 611 to the Dobson exit and then west on the short leg to Main St. Go south on S. Main St., pass Surry Electric, and go right/west on the next street. When you approach the baseball field go right, down the hill to the Training Center. Friday Blue Ridge Tour: Friday night the Triumph Club has planned a one-hour tour on the Blue ridge Parkway, departing from Mt. Airy at 4 pm. This will be followed by dinner in Mt. Airy, and the city has plans to close streets in the restaurant area for special British car parking. Details at the club website. Elkin Holiday Inn to be CJC Headquarters: The Holiday Inn Express at I-77 exit 82 in Jonesville, near Elkin, should be a great site for CJC hospitality. This 105-room facility is 14 miles from the show site, has all the amenities you are used to, and offers a good hospitality room. Trailer parking and a car washing area are available. We have blocked off 25 rooms in the Carolina Jaguar Club s name that will be held until April 8. The charge is $81.95 plus taxes. Make your reservations for Friday night April 22 and Saturday April 23 early to be sure you have accommodations. Phone Washing and trailer parking areas will be available. The host Triumph Club is headquartered at the Mt. Airy Hampton Inn ( ). There was not enough room for both clubs there but they do have secured parking available. 3 APRIL IS WINE TIME The Carolina Jaguar Club s April 23 Concours at the Gathering takes us to North Carolina s growing wine area around the Yadkin River. The Yadkin Valley Appellation has been recognized as an official wine-growing region with at least 10 vineyards, but Shelton Vineyards, our host for the show, is the largest with 178 acres under vine. Today only five years after breaking ground Shelton grows more than 10 different varieties and can produce 50,000 cases per year. Brothers and business partners in Charlotte Ed and Charlie Shelton are Jaguar customers of our sponsor, Scott Jaguar. Besides fields that seem to disappear over hills on all sides Shelton offers tours of the large processing plant. Tours depart from the building housing the wine tasting room and extensive gift shop. All show entrants will receive a complimentary ticket for the tasting experience. The grounds are beautifully landscaped, and there is a separate building that houses a cheese and small deli sandwich shop. An indication of the Yadkin Valley s industry can be seen at Surrey Community Dobson, the nearest town to Shelton and the Sunday s slalom event. Greensboro, NC Home Off/Fax Cell Concours Judging Procedure Background: As CJC s Chief Judge I have been searching for a way to judge members cars at our annual concours without the huge time commitment of the JCNA system. Last summer at our Salisbury event we spent 2 judge hours for each of 26 cars, even though only a few CJC members went to three events in pursuit of JCNA prizes. Further, I spent hours resolving two protests filed after the event. At both Autumn in the Mountains in 2003 and at Salisbury in 2004 we used popular voting by Jaguar entrants to judge all Jaguars present. This was of limited success, in my opinion, since less than half the entrants cast votes and then not for every class. So trophies were awarding after a very limited review. Half a decade ago JCNA clubs in the Pacific northwest reacted to the problem of high resource requirements with a proposed holistic judging system which was presented at an AGM. Nothing came of the proposal and records cannot be found, although club members out there are still interested in the approach. The JCNA system requires identification and quantification of every possible deduction, cleanliness or authenticity, from bumper to bumper, to be fair with other JCNA clubs and their scoring. This obviously is time consuming. Further, the majority of our judges aren t that good at authenticity details, especially for older models. Proposal: The following method be used at the CJC concours in April. It has been used successfully by CJC member Brian Hernon at the Walter Mitty shows at Road Atlanta. I had the chance to practice it with him some years ago. The method uses subjective evaluation to rank cars, more detailed inspection to break near ties, and then recognizes groups of cars rather than just the numerical best. Judging to JCNA standards will still be available to those who request it. Registration-CJC Concours 2005 Pg 4 of 12

5 RELATIVE SCORING SYSTEM Classes are defined by the judges, should depend on model similarity and may require a minimum number of entries. Cars are to be judged outside, inside, and in the boot. o Engine compartments are not reviewed so as to avoid the workload for detailing this area. A small team of judges (2 to 5), with no interest in cars in the class to be judged, quickly reviews the class and agrees on one of the best cars therein. o Note it doesn t have to be the best at this point, just a reference point. o Qualities for comparison are up to the team, but probably include cleanliness, paint quality, and general interior. They arbitrarily assign that car a score of 90 Then they score other cars in the class relative to the first. o Judges should discuss what they see and are reacting to, in the absence of the entrant, before reaching consensus on a score. o Entrant should not be included in any discussions. o Non-authentic and modification items may subtract from the score depending on period timeliness, appropriateness and quality. o Note if the team agrees subsequent cars may outscore the first car. o Judges are free to go back and review an earlier car if they need to clarify the relative ranking of some item. o Presentation (trophies, scrapbooks, etc) will neither add or detract from a score, but may be used for tie breaking Scores within a class may tend to group around the gold, silver and bronze levels (outstanding, good and fair entries). o Judges are to decide what fair cutoff score points between the groups are. All cars in a group receive the same award Scores are not revealed to the entrants because they are arbitrary and specifically scaled below 100, even if the best car might be a 100 pointer in the JCNA system. JCNA judging is available only to pre-registered cars.
