4 Holly Aprile Head Coach Alma Mater: UMass-Amherst, 1992 Holly Aprile enters her third season as head coach of Pitt s softball team. Last season, Aprile led the Blue and Gold to its highest-ever finish in the Big East, as the squad claimed sixth overall in the league. The Panthers garnered their fourth championship berth in the past five seasons, and their first under Aprile. Aprile also guided pitcher Cory Berliner to her first All-Big East nod. In her junior year, Berliner led the Panthers in almost every major pitching category, ERA (2.06), wins (13), starts (26), complete games (14) and innings pitched (166.1). She is the current school record holder in career ERA (.194), as well. Additionally, Alyssa O Connell tossed Pitt s seventh-ever no-hitter in a mid-week contest against St. Francis on March 30, In 2009, the Panthers recorded their first winning season since In that effort, three Panthers were named to the Big East Weekly honor roll, including Niki Cognigni (Feb. 23), Sam Card (March 2) and Ashley Amistade (March 10). Those accolades were accompanied by two season, two career and one team record. As a team, the Panthers won first-time meetings against Big East newcomer Georgetown, Dayton, Samford, Texas A&M-Corpus Christi, Alabama State, Army and George Washington. The Panthers also defeated Penn State and Notre Dame for the second time in two seasons. Named Pitt s head coach in July, 2008, after serving as an assistant coach the past five seasons with the Panthers, Aprile has worked specifically with the pitchers and catchers over the last five years. As an assistant, Pitt saw a number of its pitching records fall, including 2008 when Cory Berliner became the first rookie and Panther to win 16 games in a season. Furthermore, pitcher Kayla Zinger set the school record with a 1.88 earned run average. Zinger and catcher Sam Card were named to All-Big East teams in their first season working together under Aprile s watch. With the focus on each pitcher s strength, Aprile guided 2006 graduates Laura Belardinelli and Meghan Bostick to the top of the record books. In addition, Bostick was a Big East Pitcher of the Week following a 2-0 record, 0.00 ERA and 19-strikeout performance during the second week of March. Aprile joined the Pittsburgh staff after serving nine seasons as an assistant coach at the University of South Carolina. From , Aprile aided the Gamecocks to seven NCAA Regional appearances and a College World Series berth in Prior to her stint at South Carolina, Aprile worked as a graduate assistant coach at Eastern Illinois University in In 1993, Aprile served as the head softball coach of the Amherst College club team in Amherst, Mass. In honor of her achievements, she was inducted into the UMass Hall of Fame in From , Aprile was also a participant on the United States National Team, competing in the U.S. Olympic Festival ( ), Pan Am Qualifying (1994, 1997) and the South Pacific Classic (1998). 6 Gina Fuchs Assistant Coach Alma Mater: Penn State, 2003 Gina Fuchs is in her seventh season as an assistant coach for the Panthers and serves as the team s outfield instructor, while also working with the players on slap hitting and base running. Last season, Fuchs played a large role in helping left fielder Ashley Amistade lead the Panthers with a.320 hitting percentage. That average was a career high for Amistade, along with scoring a team-high 31 runs, while scoring 12 bases as a junior. Fuchs has aided the Panthers in their recent success in stolen bases. Pitt set it s team record for stolen bases two of the last five years, and both Sheena Hellon and Morgan Howard set season and career standards for stolen bases in In 2008, freshman Reba Tutt stole 26 bases, which shattered the rookie record and was just shy of the single-season best from the year before. In 2009, both Tutt and Sam Card entered the career stolen base record list. Tutt ranks fifth with 40 stolen bases in just two seasons as a Panther. Card ranks fourth overall with 48 steals in three seasons, and also set the school record for RBI during that time (120). Fuchs came to Pittsburgh after serving as a manager and head fitness trainer at It Figures in Pottstown, Pa. As a manager, she was in charge of all operations of the women s fitness facility, including marketing and sales to scheduling and hiring. Prior to that, Fuchs coached at the Penn State softball camps during the summers. Before coaching, Fuchs worked as a sports performance trainer for Aspiring Champions in King of Prussia. She coached and instructed elite athletes in all aspects of sports performance, such as power development, strength training, nutrition and conditioning. Fuchs is a 2003 Penn State graduate with a bachelor s degree in kinesiology and an exercise science emphasis. While at Penn State, she earned many awards and honors for her performance on the field. She was team captain in 2002 and 2003, received first team All-Big Ten conference honors in 2000 and 2002, academic All-Big Ten conference accolades in 2000, 2002 and Fuchs also broke Penn State career records for stolen bases, hits, runs scored and games played. Fuchs and her husband Dan live in Baldwin.
