Eight different players had multi-hit games for Hofstra. Game Two (Hofstra 5, Georgia State 3): Senior shortstop was 2-for-3 with three runs and junior right fielder Ashley Lane (Westbury, NY) was 2-for-3 with two RBI as secondseeded Hofstra moved on to the CAA title game with a 5-3 win over top-seeded Georgia State on Friday afternoon at Bob Heck Field. Hofstra spotted Georgia State three runs in the top of the first inning, but chipped away at the lead. Hofstra answered back with one run in the bottom of the first as Sweeney led off with a walk and came home on a single up the middle from Lane. The Pride then added a run in the third as sophomore center fielder Pam Dreslinski (Kingsville, OH) drew a bases-loaded walk. Hofstra then took the lead for good with two runs in the fourth, including a double from senior second baseman Lisa Wambold (Hatboro, PA). Lane added an insurance RBI single in the bottom of the sixth inning to score Sweeney, who led off with a double. Freshman pitcher Kayleigh Lotti (South Attleboro, MA) threw a five-hitter with seven strikeouts to get the win and improve to Championship Round: Sophomore Courtney Oliver (Swansea, MA) batted 2-for-3 with a three-run homer and pitched a complete-game six-hitter as Hofstra defeated Georgia State 7-3 to win the 2006 CAA Championship on Saturday, marking its ninth conference title in a row. It wasn't an easy task for the Pride, though, as Georgia State pushed the championship round to a second and deciding game with a 4-3 win in the first game of the day, rallying from a 3-1 deficit in the final two innings. Hofstra took the momentum right back at the start of the second game, though. Senior shortstop Laura Sweeney (Hopewell Junction, NY) led off with a single to right field, and senior second baseman Lisa Wambold (Hatboro, PA) followed with a two-run homer to left to give Hofstra a 2-0 lead. Oliver then gave the Pride temporary command of the game with a two-out, three-run homer in the third inning, stretching the lead to 5-0. Georgia State cut the lead to 5-3 in the fourth, but freshman catcher Carolann Lubach (Langley, WA) and sophomore center fielder Pam Dreslinski (Kingsville, OH) hit back-to-back homers to lead off the seventh to stretch the lead to 7-3. Dreslinski was 2-for-3 with a homer, and Sweeney was 2-for-3 with four stolen bases. Lane was 1-for-3 with two RBI in the first game of the day to stake Hofstra to a 2-1 lead, and Dreslinski was 2-for-3 with an RBI.

8 Another Banner Season: Hofstra s 2006 CAA championship marked the 15th straight season in which the Pride has won a conference title (either regular season or tournament), dating back to the 1992 season in the East Coast Conference, when it won the conference tournament. The Pride missed out on the regular season title this year, but still regrouped to win its ninth postseason title in a row. The Pride finished one-half game behind Georgia State, which ended the year 15-6, meaning that Hofstra needed to win a CAA Tournament on the road for the first time. The difference in games played came down to a rainout that Hofstra suffered against last-place George Mason back on April 8. The second place finish illustrates how the Pride has been remarkably consistent in league play over the last decade since joining the America East Conference (then called the North Atlantic Conference) in Hofstra has had at least a.700 league winning percentage every season since 1995, while finishing first in 10 of 12 years. Besides this season, the only other second-place finish was in 2001, when it finished one game behind Boston University. Lane batted.583 over the four games, including a home run, three doubles and 11 RBI. She was 4-for-4 with seven RBI in a win over UNC Wilmington, setting a CAA record for RBI in an entire tournament. She was joined on the All- Tournament team by all three members of the Pride s senior infield second baseman Lisa Wambold (Hatboro, PA), shortstop Laura Sweeney (Hopewell Junction, NY) and third baseman Tara Ulrich (West Nyack, NY). Sweeney Has Big CAA Tournament: Senior shortstop Laura Sweeney (Hopewell Junction, NY) was the offensive catalyst behind the Pride s strong showing at the CAA Tournament. Sweeney batted.600 (9-15) over the weekend from her leadoff spot in the batting order, including multihit games in all four contests. She was also 6-for-6 stealing bases, including a perfect 4-for-4 in the championship game, setting a CAA Tournament record and tying a school record for any game. Sweeney has an eight-game hitting streak heading into the NCAA Tournament, during which time she is batting (.586). Anything You Can Do Hofstra hit eight home runs during the 2006 CAA Tournament, with seven different players contributing. Four different players had long balls in the decisive championship game, accounting for all seven runs. Senior second baseman Lisa Wambold (Hatboro, PA) hit a two-run homer in the first inning. Sophomore pitcher Courtney Oliver (Swansea, MA) added a three-run shot in the third inning to put Hofstra ahead 5-0. After Georgia State cut the lead to 5-3, freshman catcher Carolann Lubach (Langley, WA) and sophomore center fielder Pam Dreslinski (Kingsville, OH) led off the seventh inning with back-to-back solo homers. Junior right fielder Ashley Lane (Westbury, NY), senior third baseman Tara Ulrich (West Nyack, NY), sophomore first baseman Genevieve Haney (Levittown, PA) and Wambold also added homers in the UNC Wilmington game. 9 Lane Takes Over Home Run Lead: Senior third baseman Tara Ulrich (West Nyack, NY) broke the school record for home runs in a career when she belted her 25 th in a 6-1 win over Towson on April 2. Junior outfielder Ashley Lane (Westbury, NY), though, has since caught Ulrich and is now in first place with 31 after hitting a grand slam against UNC Wilmington in the opening round of the CAA Tournament. Ulrich added her 29 th career homer in that same contest, while senior second baseman Lisa Wambold (Hatboro, PA) added two homers in the CAA Tournament to raise her total to 27, good for third place. She tied the record with a two-run double against UNC Wilmington in the first round of the CAA, then broke it with a grand slam later in the same contest. 10 Flashing The Leather: Senior third baseman Tara Ulrich had a 26-game errorless streak snapped in the Pride s final game of a virtual tripleheader against James Madison on April 23 (the first game was picked up in the second inning after being suspended by rain the previous day, and ended up going nine innings). Prior to the James Madison contest, Ulrich had not committed an error since the Tennessee game on March 10. Ulrich currently has only three errors this season in 216 chances for a.986 fielding percentage, while also leading the entire CAA in assists with 146. The errorless streak was also snapped on a relatively tough play, when she tried to field a bunt in front of home plate with her bare hand to get a speedy runner at first, but was unable to secure the ball cleanly. Flashing The Leather (Part II): Senior third baseman Tara Ulrich (West Nyack, NY) has had a terrific defensive season for the Pride (see above), but Hofstra s senior infield has been tremendous as a unit in conference play. Urlich, shortstop Laura Sweeney (Hopewell Junction, NY) and second baseman Lisa Wambold (Hatboro, PA) combined for only four errors in 20 CAA games. Overall, the Pride s fielding percentage in conference was a stellar.977. Wambold Breaks Career Stolen Base Record: Senior second baseman Lisa Wambold (Hatboro, PA) will graduate this year with her name all over Hofstra s record books. She broke the school s career stolen base record with her 52 nd against Drexel on April 30 (Senior Day). She now has 54 steals, although teammate Laura Sweeney (Hopewell Junction, NY) is closing fast and is now tied for second with 51 steals. Wambold also ranks fourth all-time in runs scored with 142, while Sweeney and junior right fielder Ashley Lane (Westbury, NY) are tied for seventh with 120 runs. The stolen base outburst gives Sweeney 19 stolen bases this season, tying the school record set by Robyn Trezise in Sweeney and fellow senior Lisa Wambold (Hatboro, PA) have had seven of the top 10 base-stealing seasons in school history and have combined for 33 this season. The duo also combined for 31 steals in 2004 (Wambold 16, Sweeney 15). Thieves!: The Hofstra Softball team has rewritten the home run record books in recent seasons, but this year s team will go down as the best base-stealing team that the Pride has ever assembled. Hofstra currently has 66 stolen bases this year in 54 games, a pace of more than one per game. The previous school record for stolen bases in a season has been 58, set by the 2001 team over a 63-game schedule. Seniors Lisa Wambold (Hatboro, PA) and Laura Sweeney (Hopewell Junction, NY) have been stealing bases successfully their entire careers (see left), but the addition of freshmen Carolann Lubach (Langley, WA) and Erika Bernstein (Somerville, NJ) has given Hofstra a couple more weapons as well. Lubach is stealing bases, ranking third on the team behind Sweeney (19) and Wambold (14), while Bernstein is 7-9. Sophomore center fielder Pam Dreslinski (Kingsville, OH) is also a perfect 6-6 in the base-stealing department. Ulrich Ties Another School Record: Senior third baseman Tara Ulrich (West Nyack, NY) tied for the best single-game performance at the plate when she went 5-for- 5 in a win over St. John s on April 19. The school record for hits in a game is six, set when Crystal Boyd was 6-for-8 in a 20-inning game against Connecticut in Ulrich s five, though, ties for the highest total for a seven-inning game, as well as the most hits in any game without recording an out. Lane Has Nine Straight Hits: Junior outfielder Ashley Lane (Westbury, NY) had a streak this season where she had hits in nine straight at-bats, setting a new school record. She also had two walks during the streak, enabling her to reach base in 11 straight plate appearances. The streak began with a double in her final at-bat in the first game of the Pride s Iona doubleheader on April 6. She then batted 3-for-3 in the nightcap, and then went 3-for-3 in the first game of the George Mason doubleheader on April 9. She added hits in her first two at-bats of the George Mason nightcap to stretch her streak to nine.

11 Senior Class: The April three-game set with Drexel marked the final CAA home series for the Pride s six seniors: pitchers Jen Daddino (Franklin Square, NY) and Amy Belonick (Terryville, CT), catcher Kristin Galeone (Bensalem, PA), second baseman Lisa Wambold (Hatboro, PA), shortstop Laura Sweeney (Hopewell Junction, NY) and third baseman Tara Ulrich (West Nyack, NY). This year s seniors rank as arguably the most decorated class in the history of the program, leading Hofstra to eight NCAA Tournament victories, two NCAA regional finals victories, and three CAA championships in their first three seasons. The Class of 2006 also helped last year s squad set a school record with 43 wins, while over the course of their four seasons, they have compiled 156 wins, three shy of tying the class of 2000 for the winningest class in school history. Class Record Winningest Classes At Hofstra Home, Sweet Home: Hofstra has a 15-3 record in home games this spring, continuing its remarkable run of success at Hofstra Softball Stadium. Since the stadium opened in 1999, the Pride is a combined (.854). Hofstra has been particularly dominant against conference teams at home, compiling a 48-5 record all-time against CAA teams (including 13-1 in CAA Tournament games). Going back to the 2001 season in the America East, Hofstra is 58-5 in its last 63 home games against league teams. The Home Run Queens: Heading into the 2003 campaign, the Hofstra team record for homers in a season was 29. The 2003 team, though, shattered that mark with 50, and the Pride has followed that season with 43 homers in 2004 and 44 last season. This year s team has 49 homers, one shy of the record, in 54 games, the fourth time in the last four years that it has reached the 40-homer mark (after never previously even reaching the 30-homer mark). Most Team Home Runs - Single Season Year Games HR Grand Slam Pam: Sophomore center fielder Pam Dreslinski (Kingsville, OH) picked an opportune time to hit her first career grand slam on April 9. The Pride was trailing George Mason 3-2 for most of the game before finally pulling even on a single into shallow right field with the bases loaded in the top of the sixth. One batter later, Dreslinski came to the plate with the score tied 3-3 and two outs, and drilled a 2-1 pitch over the fence in left-center field for her first career grand slam. Dreslinski added another big homer when she hit a solo shot in the CAA championship game win over Georgia State on Sunday. Lotti Earns Final CAA Rookie Of Week: Freshman pitcher Kayleigh Lotti (South Attleboro, MA) was named the CAA Co-Rookie of the Week on Monday after throwing two strong games over the weekend with Delaware, allowing only one earned run in 16 innings of work. Junior outfielder Ashley Lane (Westbury, NY) was named the CAA Player of the Week twice in a row, while senior third baseman Tara Ulrich (West Nyack, NY) captured the Player of the Week honor on April 6. Sophomore Courtney Oliver (Swansea, MA) also won the Pitcher of the Week honor the same week that Ulrich was honored with the top player award. Lotti struck out five and allowed only a leadoff walk in the fourth inning. Lotti threw 29 no-hitters in high school, including 14 as a junior and 10 as a senior. She was named the CAA Rookie of the Week for her efforts in the Temple game. Lotti Overcomes Open-Heart Surgery: Plenty of college athletes have had to overcome adversity to reach the collegiate level, but freshman pitcher Kayleigh Lotti (South Attleboro, MA) went through an unusually significant scare. Lotti was playing in a showcase tournament in Colorado before her senior year of high school, and experienced some pain and numbness in her pitching arm. Doctors found her blood pressure to be unusually high and put her through a battery of tests, which revealed a congenital heart condition called coarctation of the aorta. The condition was causing her heart to operate at roughly 70 percent of its capacity, which almost certainly would have been fatal if it was not detected. Lotti underwent open-heart surgery to correct the problem, and returned in time to pitch for her senior year of high school. She showed no ill effects from the surgery, as she finished her senior season at St. Raphael s Acacemy in Pawtucket, Rhode Island with an undefeated record and a 0.00 ERA. The Big 3-0: Hofstra enters the NCAA Tournament with a record, marking its 14 th 30-win season in the last 15 years. The only exception in that span was an injuryplagued 2002 season, when Hofstra finished (although it won its last 14 games in a row that season to earn the first ever CAA Championship). In every other season since 1992, the Pride has won at least 35 games, including a school record 43 wins last spring, when it finished with a record. Other than the 2002 team, every other Hofstra squad from 1992 to the present has finished at least 10 games over.500.
