1 HOFSTRA UNIVERSITY 2005 SOFTBALL NOTES Hofstra ( , 4-1 CAA) vs. UNC Wilmington (20-32, 2-4) April Hempstead, NY Streaks, Stats and Storylines: Hofstra is in its last 16 games, as well as since a 1-6 start. Senior pitcher Callie Osborne has won 11 straight decisions since a 1-0 defeat to Seton Hall on March 19. The 11 straight victories ties a school record, held by three players (including current senior Adrienne Clark). Senior pitcher Callie Osborne had a career-long streak of 27 straight shutout innings snapped in her last outing, a 6-4 win over St. John s on Wednesday. Five of the top 10 home run hitters in Hofstra history are on the active roster. Senior Hailey Clark leads the way with 22 home runs, third all-time and two shy of the school record held by former All-American Amanda Hallaway ( ). Stefanie Kenney (17), Lisa Wambold (16), Tara Ulrich (16), and Ashley Lane (16) and are also in the top 10. The Pride picked up a three-game sweep of Delaware in its last CAA series, shutting out the Blue Hens in all three. Junior second baseman Lisa Wambold enters the weekend with a career-best 11 game hitting streak, the longest for a Pride player this season. She is hitting.563 in conference games so far this year, with a slugging percentage. Junior second baseman Lisa Wambold already ranks seventh all-time at Hofstra in homers (16) and third in stolen bases (36). UNC Wilmington will be making its first-ever visit to Hofstra Softball Stadium. The two teams met for the first time last year in Wilmington, with Hofstra winning two of three. The Pride is currently 4-1 in the CAA, tied with first-place Towson (7-1) the loss column. Hofstra begins a pivotal stretch of three straight home weekends with its UNC Wilmington series. Hofstra is 31-2 all-time at home against CAA teams, with both losses coming to Delaware last year. It is also 41-2 in its last 43 conference home games, dating back to the 2001 season in the America East. 4 Last Results: Senior pitcher Callie Osborne (Oshawa, Ontario) tied a school record with her 11 th straight pitching victory as the Hofstra Softball team held on to defeat St. John s 6-4 in the opening game of a doubleheader on Wednesday afternoon at Red Storm Field. Hofstra also rallied from a 3-0 deficit to come away with a 3-3 tie in the nightcap, which was shortened to six innings due to darkness. In the opening game, junior third baseman Tara Ulrich (West Nyack, NY) hit a grand slam home run to key a five-run third inning as the Pride jumped out to a 5-0 lead. Sophomore catcher Ashley Lane (Westbury, NY) added a solo shot in the fifth inning to stretch the lead to 6-1, and the Pride held on as the Red Storm rallied with three runs with two outs in the sixth, but left the bases loaded. Osborne allowed one hit through the first five innings, but surrendered six singles over the sixth and seventh to come away with a complete-game seven-hitter with six strikeouts. That was enough to pick up her 11 th win in a row to improve to 14-5 on the season, matching a school record shared by three other pitchers, including current classmate Adrienne Clark (Gibsonton, FL). Clark started the second game of the doubleheader, and fell into a 3-0 hole in the bottom of the second. Allina Sainz hit a solo homer to start the inning, and Clark s two-out throwing error opened the door for a two-run single from Megan Oliver. Hofstra chipped away at the lead, though, scoring a run in the third as senior center fielder Kelly Morris (Pelham, NY) led off with a bunt single and came around on a pair of St. John s errors. Junior second baseman Lisa Wambold (Hatboro, PA) had an RBI single in the fourth to extend her hitting streak to 11 games and cut the lead to 3-2, and junior shortstop Laura Sweeney (Hopewell Junction, NY) tied the score in the sixth with an RBI single. Clark allowed four hits and one earned run while striking out two to get the no-decision. Hofstra vs. UNC Wilmington: Hofstra and UNC Wilmington met for the first time last year, with the Pride winning two out of three in Wilmington, splitting the Saturday doubleheader with a 6-2 win and a 6-5 loss and winning the Sunday game 5-4. Hailey Clark (Caledon, Ontario) homered in all three games of the series for the Pride. Hofstra began the series with a 6-2 win as Clark homered and Tara Ulrich (West Nyack, NY) drive in two runs with a pair of doubles. UNC Wilmington won the second game 6-5, taking advantage of five Pride errors to defeat Adrienne Clark (Gibsonton, FL). Lisa Wambold (Hatboro, PA) was 2-for-2 with three runs, a homer and two RBI. Hofstra came back in the rubber game for a 5-4 win as Clark and Ulrich both homered to support Callie Osborne (Oshawa, Ontario). Wambold was 5-for-8 in the series, while Ashley Lane (Westbury, NY) was 5-for-10 and Ulrich was 4-for-11 with four RBI. Osborne Ties School Record: Senior pitcher Callie Osborne (Oshawa, Ontario) got off to a little bit of a slow start this season after breaking the Hofstra record for lowest ERA last spring (0.79). She has definitely been in a groove as of late, though, picking up wins in her last 11 decisions, since suffering a tough 1-0 defeat to Seton Hall on March 19. The 11 straight wins ties a school record held by three other pitchers, including current classmate Adrienne Clark (Gibsonton, FL) who won her last 11 decisions of the 2003 season. Stacy Jackson first set the record in 1993, while All-American Alicia Smith matched it in 2000, with her 11 th straight win coming in a 2-1 victory over Louisiana-Lafayette in the NCAA Tournament. Osborne tied the record in Wednesday s 6-4 win over St. John s, when she had a one hitter through five innings, but held off a late Red Storm rally. Osborne had won her three previous games by shutout, including two over CAA rival Delaware. She also threw three complete games in a two-day span at the Hofstra Invitational, throwing both games on March 25 as the Pride captured a 5-3 win over Iona and a 5-1 win over LIU. She then capped off the weekend with a four-hit shutout in the Pride s 5-0 win over Iona on March 26. After starting out the year with an ERA over 5.00 after her first five appearances, she has improved her stat line to a 14-5 record and a 1.97 ERA heading into the UNC Wilmington series. Osborne Shutout Streak Snapped At 27: Senior pitcher Callie Osborne (Oshawa, Ontario) had a streak of 27 straight shutout innings snapped in Wednesday s 6-4 win over St. John s, when the Red Storm scored a run in the fourth inning on a one-out sacrifice fly. She had not allowed a run since the fourth inning of a 9-2 win over George Mason on April 3. She did not allow a run in the final three innings of that contest, and then tossed three straight shutouts, a fourhitter against Syracuse on April 5, a three-hitter against Delaware on April 9, and a two-hitter against Delaware on April 10. Anything You Can Do : Hofstra s two senior pitchers both put up outstanding pitching performances in helping the Pride sweep a three-game series from Delaware last weekend without allowing a run. Callie Osborne (Oshawa, Ontario) began the weekend with a three-hit shutout as the Pride captured a 1-0 win over the Blue Hens on Saturday. Adrienne Clark (Gibsonton, FL) then threw a one-hit shutout in the nightcap of the doubleheader, allowing only a single to shallow center field in the second inning as Hofstra captured the 6-0 win. Osborne then capped off the weekend when she took a no-hitter into the seventh inning before settling for a two-hit shutout in Hofstra s 3-0 win.

5 Osborne Named Pitcher of the Week: Senior Callie Osborne (Oshawa, Ontario) was named the Colonial Athletic Association Softball Co-Pitcher of the Week on Monday, after throwing three consecutive shutouts for the Pride. It was the second time she has won the award this season, and the fourth in the last two years. Osborne also becomes the first repeat winner for the Pride this season as six different players had earned Hofstra s previous six awards, including March 28, when Osborne was Pitcher of the Week, Hailey Clark (Caledon, Ontario) was Player of the Week and Courtney Oliver (Swansea, MA) was Rookie of the Week (see below). Senior Hailey Clark (Caledon, Ontario) leads the way with 22 after belting four at the Hofstra Invitational on March That puts her two shy of the school record of 24, held by former All-American Amanda Hallaway ( ). Senior Stefanie Kenney (Malvern, PA) hit a homer against Rutgers on March 30, moving her into sixth place all-time with 17. Junior Lisa Wambold hit two round-trippers last week to push her career total to 16, good for seventh place. Meanwhile, Tara Ulrich (West Nyack, NY) and sophomore Ashley Lane (Westbury, NY) both homered on Wednesday against St. John s to pull even with Wambold in a tie for seventh with 16. The Pride s recent hitting spree ironically knocked the team s hitting coach out of Hofstra s top 10 (former All-American Lisa Ciavardini, who is currently in 11 th place with 13). However, this season, she has really turned up the power another notch, leading the Pride with nine home runs through the first 35 games. She homered in three consecutive contests from March 30-April 3 (both games of a doubleheader against Rutgers and the first game against George Mason). Last week, she added a pair of round-trippers, including a solo homer against Syracuse on April 5 and a long homer against Delaware on April 10. Wambold is currently ascending up several Hofstra career record lists in only her third season with the Pride. She is already in seventh place in career home runs with 16 (see chart at left) and is tied for fifth on the singleseason home run list with nine (see chart above). In addition, she is also now alone in third place on the career stolen base list with 36 (see below), while her 16 stolen bases last year rank as the second-highest total in school history (see following page). At her current pace, she could graduate from Hofstra as the program s allteam leading home run hitter and top base stealer. 6 Speed Kills: Hofstra s speed at the top of the order has been a key element in the Pride s success over the last two seasons. A year ago, Juniors Lisa Wambold (Hatboro, PA) and Laura Sweeney (Hopewell Junction, NY) combined for 31 stolen bases in 37 attempts, with Wambold going and Sweeney Those rank as two of the top four single-season stolen base totals in school history. This year, Wambold is 8-for-10, while Sweeney is close behind at 7-for-10. Hofstra Single-Season Stolen Base Leaders 19 Robyn Trezise Lisa Wambold Laura Sweeney Jen Pawol Robyn Trezise Lisa Wambold LaMeka Anderson Christine Moran Heather Brousseau 2002 Thieves Like To Work In Pairs: Junior second baseman Lisa Wambold (Hatboro, PA) and junior shortstop Laura Sweeney (Hopewell Junction, NY) set a school record for stolen bases in a season by a pair of Hofstra teammates with 31, eclipsing the old record of 30 set by Robyn Trezise (19) and Chris Aigotti (11) in Clark Has Career Day In Win Over LIU: Senior first baseman/outfielder Hailey Clark (Caledon, Ontario) had a game for the ages as the Pride defeated Long Island University 15-0 on March. Clark batted 4-for-4 with three homers and 10 RBI in the win, setting new school records for home runs, RBI and total bases in a game. She also became only the third player in NCAA Division I Softball history to record a 10-RBI game, falling one short of the NCAA record held by two players. Tiffany Whittall (Louisiana-Lafayette) first set the record in 1995 in a win over Samford, while Central Florida s Stephanie Best matched it with 11 RBI in a win over Army in Thirteen other players had been tied for third on the single-game list with nine RBI, prior to Clark s 10-RBI explosion. She also joined a long list of players tied for second with three homers in a game, one behind Jill Iocono of Canisius, who is the only player to ever hit four. Making the accomplishment even more impressive was that she hit a three-run homer to center in the first, then pulled a three-run homer to left field in the second inning and an opposite-field two-rum homer to right in the fifth inning. Bye, Bye Blackbirds: Senior first baseman/outfielder Hailey Clark (Caledon, Ontario) has had a remarkable run of success against Long Island University over the last two years. She became just the seventh player in Hofstra history to hit two homers in a game when the Pride lost at Long Island University last season 7-5, going 2-for-3 with four RBI. This year, she set a new school record with three homers and added 10 RBI in a 15-0 win over the Blackbirds on March 26. She also batted 3-for-3 and hit the game-winning three-run homer in the fifth inning of a 5-1 win over Long Island on March 25. In the last three meetings with the Blackbirds, Clark is a whopping 9-10 with six homers, two doubles, and 18 RBI, good for a slugging percentage of Home Run Hailey: Senior Hailey Clark (Caledon, Ontario) had a breakthrough season a year ago that nearly put her in the Hofstra record books. After hitting a combined two homers in her first two seasons when she was battling various injuries, she exploded for 16 homers last spring. That left her just one shy of the single-season record set by Danielle Stewart in Prior to Stewart s big season, the single-season school record had been only 10. Clark got her 16 th homer at the NCAA Regionals off of Stanford All-American Dana Sorenson, but didn t get many chances to go for her record-tying 17 th. Stanford walked her four times in the regional finals, allowing her to set a school record for walks in a season with 33. Another Record In The Books: In addition to her home run and RBI records set against Long Island University, senior first baseman/outfielder Hailey Clark (Caledon, Ontario) also set another school record by recording hits in seven straight at-bats, going 3-for-3 against LIU on Friday and 4-for-4 against the Blackbirds on Saturday. That tied her for the sixth longest streak in NCAA history, three shy of the record. Lane Sets Freshman HR Record: Sophomore catcher/outfielder Ashley Lane (Westbury, NY) hit 10 home runs as a freshman last season, capped off by a solo shot in the Pride s 3-1 win over Southern Illinois at the NCAA Regionals in Palo Alto. The 10 home runs set a new Hofstra freshman record, eclipsing the previous mark of seven, which was set in 2003 by current junior Tara Ulrich (West Nyack, NY). The 10 homers also tied for third all-time in Hofstra history with Dana Bennett. She has added sixmore this season, including two against Rutgers on March 30, making her the eighth player in school history to have a multi-homer game. Her 16 homers ties her for seventh at Hofstra in only her sophomore season.

7 The Accidental Pitcher: Hofstra senior Adrienne Clark (Gibsonton, FL) has been one of the best big-game pitchers in the country over the last two seasons. What makes her success even more remarkable is the fact that she was not recruited as a pitcher by Hofstra (or anyone else). Hofstra signed Clark as a utility player, and she played every position on the field except pitcher during fall practice her freshman season. However, that spring the Pride suffered some injuries to its pitching staff and needed someone for mop-up duty. Clark volunteered and made the most of her chances, throwing a combined 10.2 innings in six appearances without allowing a run (including three innings against eventual national champion California). She was then used as a closer early in her sophomore year (2003) and had a memorable appearance when she struck out the side against Washington including All-Americans Jaime Clark and Kristen Rivera. The Pride then converted her to a starter in April and she won her last 11 decisions, tying a school record. She has been a regular pitcher ever since, and has performed her best in the NCAA s (see below). Clark s NCAA Shutout Streak Revisited: Senior pitcher Adrienne Clark (Gibsonton, FL) has put together some remarkable pitching performances in the NCAA Tournament over the last two seasons. She had a streak of 28 straight shutout innings over the 2003 and 2004 Tournaments, which was broken in a relief appearance against Stanford last year. Counting only innings as a starter, her streak reached 31 innings, the longest such streak since former National Player of the Year Nancy Evans reached 38 for Arizona in the 1998 Tournament. The 28 straight overall shutout innings was barely eclipsed by Kristina Thorson of California, who had a streak of 29 innings (including seven in relief) snapped last season at the World Series. Below is a list of the top NCAA shutout streaks from the last seven years: Longest NCAA Tournament Shutout Streaks (Since 1998) Name School Innings Year(s) Nancy Evans Arizona Kristina Thorson California Adrienne Clark Hofstra Cat Osterman Texas Amanda Freed UCLA Kelly Anderson California Jocelyn Forrest California Jamie Southern Fresno St Jess van der Linden Florida St Jennie Finch Arizona Courtney Dale UCLA Note: Counting only innings pitched as a starter, Clark s streak of 31 innings was the longest since Evans in Clark Returns To Form: Senior pitcher Adrienne Clark (Gibsonton, FL) missed nine games due to an illness before returning to the lineup on March 30 against Rutgers, picking up the win in four innings of work. Clark has not been at full strength, but started to return to form last week in the later innings of her loss against Syracuse on Tuesday, when she retired 10 of the last 11 batters she faced. She then responded with a one-hit shutout in the Pride s 6-0 win over Delaware on Saturday, allowing only a second inning single and retiring the last 13 batters in order. Welcome Home: Senior pitcher Adrienne Clark (Gibsonton, FL) has had some memorable moments in her career when she has returned home to the Tampa area. This year, she compiled a 5-3 record and an 0.59 ERA in 11 appearances in the Tampa area (at two tournaments at the University of South Florida and the Speedline Invitational in Clearwater), including a two-hit shutout in a 1-0 win over Villanova, and a win in relief in a 4-3 victory over South Florida. Last year, she put on a pitching clinic at the 2004 Best Western Invitational at South Florida. She was used in relief in all five games in the tournament, throwing a combined 18 innings without allowing an earned run. She threw four shutout innings of relief to get a win over Maryland, two innings of shutout relief to get a win over Tulsa, and 4.1 innings of shutout relief to get the win over North Carolina State. She added a save in a victory over Temple and took a loss on an unearned run in a 4-3 defeat to South Florida in the championship game. Big Game Adrienne: Senior pitcher Adrienne Clark (Gibsonton, FL/Riverview) has made a habit of stepping up against top competition during her career. In her three seasons, she has thrown in 13 games against nationally-ranked teams and has allowed an earned run in only two. As a freshman, she threw a combined 3.0 shutout innings against eventual national champion California. As a sophomore, she threw 4.1 innings against Notre Dame, 2.0 innings against Washington, and a combined 5.2 innings in two games against Nebraska, all in relief, allowing just one unearned run. Last year, she earned a win with 1.1 innings of relief against Auburn and shut out Stanford 1-0 in the regional finals. She did allow three runs in relief to Stanford in an earlier game, and surrendered three runs in the second game of the regional finals (in her 11 th inning of work that day), making the Cardinal the only ranked team to score an earned run off her. This year, she has thrown against two teams that were ranked in the preseason poll, throwing three innings of shutout relief against preseason #21 South Florida and 2.2 innings of shutout relief against preseason #22 Illinois.

8 Home, Sweet Home: Hofstra earned a big advantage when it won the regular season CAA Championship last year and earned the right to host the conference tournament. The Pride went 22-4 at home last year and is 8-3 this season. Hofstra is also now in the seven years at Hofstra Softball Stadium. Hofstra also has a record of 31-2 at home against CAA teams in its three seasons in the league (including 10-1 in CAA tournament games), and is 41-2 in its last 43 home games against conference opponents, dating back to the 2001 season in the America East. Both losses in that stretch came last season to Delaware, including one in the opening round of the CAA Tournament. Delaware, in fact, has accounted for five of the 22 losses that the Pride has suffered at Hofstra Softball Stadium, including the only one in 1999, two in 2000, and two last spring. Here is a look at Hofstra s performances at its current home field (which is now called Hofstra Softball Stadium): Pride At Hofstra Softball Stadium Year Rec. Pct Total Hofstra In Conference: Hofstra opened its conference schedule with a two-game split with George Mason on April 3 before sweeping three games at Delaware last weekend. The Pride has been remarkably consistent in league play over the last decade since joining the North Atlantic Conference (now called the America East) in Hofstra has had at least a.750 league winning percentage every season since 1995, while finishing first in nine of 10 years: Hofstra Conference Finishes Year Rec. Total (.840) The Home Run Queens: In 2003, Hofstra shattered the school record for homers in a season with 50, easily breaking the old mark of 29 (set in 1999). After the graduation of the school's all-time career home run leader (Amanda Hallaway) and the school's single season home run leader (Danielle Stewart) in 2003, it appeared that the Pride's success with the long ball would take a step backwards. That wasn t the case, though, as the Pride belted 43 homers last season for its secondhighest ever total. This year s team is also heating up at the plate and how has 31 homers in 37 games, putting it on pace to challenge the school record of 50. The 31 homers also is already the third most in school history, giving the Pride its top three home run totals in the last three years. Most Team Home Runs - Single Season Year Games HR CAA Update: Towson and Hofstra have jumped out to the best starts in conference play this spring, with Towson atop the standings at 7-1 and the Pride tied in the loss column at 4-1. Towson is idle from league play this week, meaning that Hofstra could pull even at 7-1 if it sweeps its three games from UNC Wilmington. That would set up a big three-game showdown with Towson at Hofstra Softball Stadium on the weekend of April If the Pride takes two out of three in each of the next two weekends against UNCW and Towson, it would also pull even with Towson for first place at 8-3, although surprising Drexel, which is currently 5-3, could also forge its way into that mix as well. Drexel travels to Delaware this weekend, while George Mason entertains James Madison in the other weekend series. Colonial Athletic Association Standings Team Rec. Pct. Overall Pct. 9 Last Year Revisited: Hofstra opened up the 2005 season looking for an encore after a dramatic NCAA Tournament run in 2004, which saw the Pride fall one win shy of reaching the Women s College World Series. Hofstra, though, very nearly didn t even qualify for the postseason. It clinched the regular season CAA championship on the very last day of with a narrow 4-3 win over James Madison, earning the right to host the conference tournament. It then dropped a 3-2 game to Delaware in the opening round of the CAA Tournament, and had to fight its way back through the loser s bracket. The Pride trailed Towson 4-2 in the fifth of an elimination game, but rallied back for a 7-5 win and held on when the Tigers left the bases loaded in the seventh. It then defeated James Madison 3-0 to reach the championship round when the Dukes also left the bases loaded in the seventh. Hofstra then defeated Delaware 2-0 in the first game of the championship round to force a second and deciding game, and then knocked off the Blue Hens 2-1 in nine innings in the second game to win the CAA championship. Once it made it safely to the NCAA s, the Pride then proceeded to go on a dramatic run, defeating #12 Auburn 1-0 in nine innings, then knocking off Southern Illinois 1-0 in 12 innings for its third straight extra-inning victory. After falling to #7 Stanford 7-1, Hofstra earned its way into the regional finals with a 3-1 win in a rematch with Southern Illinois. It then knocked off Stanford 1-0 to force a second and deciding game for the right to go to the Women s College World Series. Stanford scored two runs in the fourth and one in the fifth and held off a seventh-inning Pride rally to win 3-1 and end Hofstra s Cinderella run. In fact, a remarkable 12 different players were honored in the postseason last year, either on the All-CAA or All-Mid Atlantic Region teams or on the All-Tournament teams at the CAA or the NCAA Regionals. Hofstra had nine players honored as All-Colonial Athletic Association, including six first-team selections. The Pride also had five All-Region selections, including shortstop Laura Sweeney (Hopewell Junction, NY) who was not one of the nine Pride players named to the All-CAA teams. Sophomore pitcher Amy Belonick (Terryville, CT) was one of five Pride players named to the CAA All- Tournament team, while junior outfielder Lisa Torres (Farmingville, NY) became the 12 th Pride player honored when she was chosen to the NCAA All-Regional team at Stanford.
