SPORTS NEWS HOFSTRA UNIVERSITY HEMPSTEAD, NEW YORK ATHLETIC COMMUNICATIONS PHYSICAL FITNESS CENTER (516) FAX: (516) HOFSTRA SOFTBALL NOTES (36-10, 15-3 CAA) vs. George Mason (May 3-4) Hempstead, NY Streaks, Stats, and Storylines: Hofstra entered the new season as the first team in NCAA Division I Softball history to win 10 straight conference championships. Hofstra has won all six CAA titles since joining the conference in 2002, after winning its final four America East Conference championships from Hofstra leads the CAA standings by 2.5 games and needs to win just one of its three games this weekend against George Mason to clinch the regular season title. It would mark the 17 th year in a row that the Pride has won either a regular season or a postseason conference championship. Junior pitcher Kayleigh Lotti broke the Hofstra career strikeout record on April 19 against Drexel while throwing a perfect game (she now has 675 career K s). Lotti has won five of the last six CAA Pitcher of the Week honors. Sophomore first baseman Michele DePasquale has a school-record 24-game hitting streak active, during which span she is hitting.513. The old record had been 18. Sophomore outfielder Kris Root has the school record for stolen bases in a season with 24. Hofstra ranks in the top 5 nationally in both team earned run average (1.07, 5th) and fielding percentage (.978, 5th). The Pride has won 11 straight games, during which span it has outscored its opponents It has also won 19 of its last 20, while outscoring opponents Hofstra s Probable Starters Pos. No. Cl. It marked the Pride's 10th straight conference championship, including all six since it joined the CAA in Prior to joining the CAA, Hofstra won the final four America East Conference championships it participated in from No Division I school had ever won 10 straight conference championships prior to this current run by the Pride. Massachusetts won nine in a row in the Atlantic 10 from before seeing the streak ended by Temple in the 2004 Atlantic 10 Tournament. This year's freshmen were finishing up first grade the last time Hofstra did not win its conference tournament (1997). Consecutive Conference Championships (Division I) Streak School Years 10 Hofstra Massachusetts Florida Atlantic * Louisiana-Lafayette 1987, Princeton * Louisiana-Lafayette won the 1987 Southland Conference title, played as an independent for 13 years, then won seven straight titles in the Sun Belt Conference from Another Banner Season: Hofstra s 2007 CAA regular season championship marked the 16th straight season in which the Pride has won a conference title (either regular season or tournament), dating back to the 1992 season in the East Coast Conference, when it won the conference tournament. The Pride missed out on the regular season CAA title in 2006, but won its ninth postseason title in a row. The Pride needs just one win this weekend to capture the 2008 regular season title and extend the streak to 17 years. Season & Tournament About Head Coach Bill Edwards: Bill Edwards is in his 19th season as Hofstra University Head Softball Coach, and he has led the Pride to national prominence during that time. His career record is currently , making him one of only 35 active coaches with 600 wins, including one of seven with less than 20 years of experience. The last five seasons have seen Edwards and the Pride achieve new levels of success, including the 2004 campaign, when it went on a remarkable postseason run that saw it come up one win shy of reaching the Women s College World Series. Hofstra has won at least one game in each of the last five NCAA Tournaments and has reached the regional finals twice. Over the last five years, the Pride has NCAA Tournament wins over Nebraska, Creighton, Auburn, Stanford, Southern Illinois, Arizona State, and Penn State. The Hofstra Softball program has also displayed consistent excellence over the last 18 years. Edwards and company have garnered 10 NCAA Tournament appearances (1993, 1995, 1999, 2000, 2001, 2003, 2004, 2005, 2006, 2007), two East Coast Conference Championships (1992 and 1994), five America East Championships (1995, 1998, 1999, 2000, 2001), six Colonial Athletic Association Championships (2002, 2003, 2004, 2005, 2006, 2007) and an ECAC Championship (1993). In each of the last 16 years under Edwards, the Pride has won either a regular season or a postseason conference title, including a streak of 10 straight tournament championships, something no team in NCAA Division I history had previously accomplished. The previous long was nine straight conference titles, which UMass accomplished in the Atlantic 10 from Edwards, who earned his 18th straight winning season at Hofstra last spring, also coached the Pride to a #21 ranking in the final 2004 NCAA Division I Softball Poll, and a #20 ranking in the final 1994 poll. In addition, he has led the Pride to #1 rankings in the Northeast Region Poll in 1993, 1994, 1997 and Edwards has also been named the Regional Coach of the Year eight times in his career (1993, 1994, 1997, 2000, 2003, 2004, 2005, 2007), including four of the last five years. His players have also earned national recognition, as they have picked up All-America honors from the National Fastpitch Coaches Association five times, including twice by Crystal Boyd (1993, 1994) and once from Alicia Smith (2000), Lisa Ciavardini (2000) and Amanda Hallaway (2003). Edwards came to Hofstra from Commack High School, where he coached softball for nine years, compiling a record. The Big 3-0: Hofstra enters the weekend with a record. Hofstra has had 30 wins in 16 of the last 17 years, with the only exception coming in an injury-plagued 2002 campaign which saw the Pride finish Every other season since 1992 has seen Hofstra win at least 33 games. Pride Receiving Votes In All Three Polls: Hofstra is receiving seven votes in the ESPN.com/Amateur Softball Association (ASA) top 25 poll released on Tuesday, ranking the Pride 30th in the nation. The Pride is getting eight votes in the Ultimate College Softball top 25, which places it 31st, and is also getting two votes in the USA Today/National Fastpitch Coaches Association (NFCA) top 25, ranking 33rd.

Lotti Breaks Strikeout Record With Perfect Game: Junior Kayleigh Lotti (South Attleboro, MA) became the all-time strikeout leader in Hofstra Softball history agaonst Drexel on Saturday, April 19, breaking the record in style with a six-inning perfect game (with 11 K's). She passed the old record of 638, held by Stacy Jackson ( ). Last year, Lotti broke the single-season record of 277, set by Erin Phillips in 1996 and became the first Hofstra pitcher to record 300 strikeouts in a season in the CAA championship game (before finishing with 319). She struck out 13 batters in a 5-inning win over Delaware on Saturday, including a career-best 10 batters in a row. She has had double-digit strikeout totals seven times this season, and 22 times in the last two years (see below), with Hofstra emerging victorious in all 22 of those games. As a freshman during the 2006 campaign, she had 10 or more strikeouts four times (with the Pride going 2-2 in those contests), giving her 26 games with double-digit strikeouts in her career. She has been dominant in all 21 of her shutouts: throwing three no-hitters, five one-hitters, 11 twohitters, a three-hitter, and a four-hitter. Seventeen of her 21 career shutouts have come against CAA teams, including at least one against every conference team. This year, she has eight shutouts in 11 CAA games, tallying an 11-1 record and an 0.37 ERA in conference play. She also threw five perfect innings against Delaware on Sunday before coming out of the game with the Pride leading 8-0. Lotti had a streak of 19 straight wins against CAA opponents snapped in a 1-0 loss to Georgia State on April 12, which included 6-0 this year, 3-0 in the CAA Tournament last year, and wins in her final 10 conference starts a year ago. Lotti Wins 50th: Junior pitcher Kayleigh Lotti (South Attleboro, MA) threw a one-hit shutout against UNC Wilmington on April 5 to pick up the 50th win in her threeyear career. After picking up two more wins last weekend against Delaware, her career record now stands at She is already fifth on the Pride's all-time win list. Lotti Overcomes Open-Heart Surgery: Junior pitcher Kalyeigh Lotti (South Attleboro, MA) has had a significant impact on the Pride in her career. Lotti almost never had the chance to perform in college, though. During the summer before her senior year of high school, she was pitching in a showcase tournament in Colorado and was experiencing some health problems. She visited a walk-in clinic, which recommended that she see a heart specialist when she returned home. After a battery of tests, Lotti was diagnosed with coarctation of the aorta, a potentially fatal condition which required open-heart surgery. Lotti recovered from the surgery in time to pitch her senior year of high school at St. Raphael's in Pawtucket, Rhode Island, recording a 0.00 ERA and earning Gatorade State Player of the Year honors. Lotti Earns CAA Honors (Again): Hofstra has been well represented in the CAA weekly awards this season as four different players have been honored a total of nine times. Junior Kayleigh Lotti (South Attleboro, MA) has won five of the last six Pitcher of the Week honors, while Sara Michalowski (Philadelphia, PA) has been named the Rookie of the Week twice. 4 DePasquale's Record Hit Streak Reaches 24: Sophomore first baseman Michele DePasquale (Waterford, NJ) extended her school-record hitting streak to 24 games with a three-run home run on Wednesday at St. John's. On April 19 against Drexel, she passed the old school record of 18, set in 1992 by Crystal Boyd. She has since extended her streak to 24 games, including multi-hit games in all three games of the Delaware series last weekend. During her 24- game hitting streak, DePasquale is hitting.513 (37-72). In 18 CAA games, she has compiled a.500 batting average (28-56), which leads the conference. Root Breaks Stolen Base Record: Hofstra has built its 2008 line-up around speed, as two players are neck-andneck for the single-season Hofstra stolen base record. Sophomore outfielder Kris Root (Waynesboro, PA) stole her 21st and 22nd bases of the season on April 19 against Drexel, breaking the school record of 21 set by Laura Sweeney in 2006, and now has 24. Right on her heels, though, is junior second baseman Casey Fee (Long Beach, NY), who is a perfect 18-18, putting her in fourth place on the Pride's single-season list. Dating back to last year, Fee has stolen her last 21 bases successfully. As a team, Hofstra has 65 stolen bases in 46 contests, putting the Pride ahead of pace to break the school record. The team record is 69 stolen bases, set in 2006, when the Pride played 57 games. Hofstra Single-Season Stolen Base Leaders No. Name Year 24 Kris Root Laura Sweeney Robyn Trezise Casey Fee Lisa Wambold 2004 Fee Among Hofstra's Top Base Stealers: Junior second baseman Casey Fee (Long Beach, NY) has moved into the top 10 on the Pride's career stolen base list this place. She currently stands tied for fifth place with 34, five shy of fourth place, including 18 this season (in 18 attempts) and 13 last season (in 16 attempts). She has been successful in each of her last 21 stolen base attempts, dating back to last season, when she was thrown out in a game at Georgia State. Sophomore outfielder Kris Root (Waynesboro, PA) has raised her career total to 30, ranking tied for seventh. Hofstra Career Stolen Base Leaders No. Name Years 55 Lisa Wambold Laura Sweeney Robyn Trezise Heather Brousseau Casey Fee 2006-pres 34 Crystal Boyd Kris Root 2007-pres 30 Alicia Smith A Run-Off Homer?: Junior second baseman Casey Fee (Long Beach, NY) had a rare accomplishment when she hit an inside-the-park homer on April 2 against Lehigh. Her homer also ended the contest as it came in the bottom of the eighth inning, giving the Pride a 2-1 win. Hofstra's last inside-the-park homer came in 2003, when Laura Sweeney did it against Ball State in Clearwater, Florida. Fee's roundtripper was the first inside-the-park homer in the history of Hofstra Softball Stadium, which opened in Dreslinski, Oliver Join 100-RBI Club: Senior shortstop Pam Dreslinski (Kingsville, OH) became the 12th player in Hofstra history to record 100 career RBI when she had a two-run single in Hofstra's 7-4 win over South Carolina on Feb. 23, and now ranks eighth with 115 after tallying two more RBI in the Pride's series with Drexel last weekend. Senior Courtney Oliver (Swansea, MA) joined Dreslinski in the 100-RBI club in the Drexel series, and now has 110, putting her alone in ninth place. Hofstra Career RBI Leaders No. Name Years 180 Ashley Lane Lisa Ciavardini Crystal Boyd Amanda Hallaway Alicia Smith Tara Ulrich Dana Bennett Pam Dreslinski 2005-pres 110 Courtney Oliver 2005-pres 109 Robyn Trezise Megan Scharf Jen Smith Under Control: In two seasons in the pitching circle, junior Joanna Kralowetz (Mt. Airy, MD) has shown remarkable control. Last year, she struck out 65 batters in 66 innings, while walking only four (one of which was intentional). So far this year, she has thrown 37.1 innings and walked seven, two of which were intentional. In career innings pitched, she has now walked only eight batters unintentionally, while striking out 87. This year, she has also compiled a 4-1 record and an impressive 0.56 earned run average. Feinstein Helps Out In A Pinch: A key to the Pride's series win over Georgia State on April was the play off the bench from sophomore Stefanie Feinstein (West Chester, PA). Feinstein had a pinch-hit RBI single in the fifth inning of the second game on Saturday, which put Hofstra ahead 3-1 and proved to be the game-winning RBI in the Pride's 5-2 win. On Sunday, she pinch hit again and belted a three-run homer to break the game open, putting Hofstra ahead 8-2 in a game it would go on to win Feinstein continued her pinch-hitting success against Delaware on Sunday, when she came off the bench to hit a two-run homer in the sixth inning of Hofstra's 8-1 win. Ms. Versatily: Senior pitcher Courtney Oliver (Swansea, MA) has been a huge part of the Pride's success this season. She has been a solid part of the Pride's pitching rotation all year, and has also stepped up at the plate in the second half of the season in the clean-up spot in the order. Oliver has a pitching record of 9-1 on the season with an 0.80 ERA, giving her a chance to become only the fifth pitcher in school history to have an ERA under 1.00 for a full season (with at least one IP per team game played). She also could challenge the school record of 0.79, which was set by Callie Osborne in Oliver has not lost a game since a 2-0 defeat to Illinois State on March 1. At the plate, Oliver is hitting.273, while leading Hofstra in both homers (3) and RBI (33). She has been especially dominant in conference, tallying a 4-0 record and an 0.28 ERA in the circle, while hitting.383 with three homers and 23 RBI. She leads the entire CAA in RBI in conference games, three more than Catherine Lee of Georgia State (20).

Dreslinski Comes Up Big: Senior shortstop Pam Dreslinski (Kingsville, OH) had a huge weekend at the plate for the Pride at the Louisville Slugger Invitational from Feb , helping the Pride to a first-place finish. All five of Dreslinski's hits drove in runs, as she finished with nine RBI in five games, accounting for half of the 18 runs that Hofstra had in the tournament. She started out by going 2-for-2 with three RBI in a 4-0 win over Georgia Tech on Friday, Feb. 22. The next day, she put up an impressive 2-for-4, five-rbi effort against South Carolina to lead Hofstra to a 7-4 win. She had a three-run, two-out double in that game to put Hofstra ahead 4-0 in the second. After South Carolina tied it in the bottom of the fifth, Dreslinski answered with a key two-out, two-run single to break the tie and give Hofstra the lead back at 6-4. She capped off the weekend with the game-winning RBI single in a 2-0 win over Wisconsin, which gave the Pride first place. She earned CAA Player of the Week honors for her efforts. On A Roll: Hofstra comes into this weekend with an 11- game winning streak, during which span it has outscored its opponents The Pride has also won 19 of its last 20 games, with the only exception a 1-0 defeat at Georgia Tech on April 12, when Hofstra had 12 hits but was unable to score a run. In the last 20 games, Hofstra has outscored its opponents by a remarkable , while not allowing more than two runs in any of those 20 games. Going back to the final day of the NFCA Leadoff Classic on March 2, Hofstra has a 29-3 record in its last 32 contests (since beginning the year 7-7). Goose Eggs: Hofstra has yet to allow a single run in a home conference game this season. The last home CAA series saw the Pride shut out Drexel in all three games, allowing only five hits combined, including a perfect game and a one-hitter from junior Kayleigh Lotti (South Attleboro, MA) and a four-hitter from senior Courtney Oliver (Swansea, MA). The Pride did the same thing in its previous home CAA series against UNC Wilmington on April 5-6, picking up three shutouts on a combined five hits. Lotti threw a one-hitter in the first game on Saturday and a two-hitter in the series finale on Sunday, while Oliver tossed a two-hitter in the Saturday nightcap. CAA teams are hitting only.083 at Hofstra Softball Stadium this season (10-120). Shutout Streaks: Hofstra did not allow a run for five straight games before seeing the streak snapped on a twoout throwing error in the bottom of the seventh inning of Saturday's 8-1 win over Delaware. The five straight shutouts tied the longest single-season streak in school history with the 1999 team and fell one shy of the overall record set in the final four games of 1992 and the first four games of The shutout streak lasted for 40 innings, dating back to a fourth inning run in an 8-1 win over Fordham on April 16. Hofstra has still not allowed an earned run for a span of 52 innings, after a five-inning shutout against St. John's on Wednesday. Individually, junior pitcher Kayleigh Lotti (South Attleboro, MA) comes into the week with a streak of 29 straight shutout innings, after having a streak of 43 straight innings earlier this season. Senior pitcher Courtney Oliver (Swansea, MA), meanwhile, has a streak of 20 straight shutout innings active, dating back to a run in the third inning of a 5-2 win over Georgia State on April 13. Catching On: Junior catcher Carolann Lubach (Langley, WA) is one of the unsung reasons for Hofstra's success this season, due to her solid work behind the plate. In 46 starts, Lubach does not have a single passed ball. In addition, the Pride pitching staff has only five combined wild pitches, thanks in large part to Lubach's ability to block pitches in the dirt. Making Them Count: Junior catcher Carolann Lubach (Langley, WA) has six career homers for the Pride. What is impressive is that three of them have come in postseason play. She hit a solo shot in the seventh inning of the 2006 CAA title game against Georgia State (a 7-3 Pride victory). She added a two-run shot in a 3-1 win in the 2007 CAA title game rematch against Georgia State, and then hit a solo shot in a 3-2 win in the 2007 NCAA Regionals against Harvard. She has two home runs this season, including one against Wright State at the University of South Florida and another at home against UNC Wilmington. Her first career homer came against St. John's as a freshman. An Ill-Timed Foul Ball: Junior pitcher Kayleigh Lotti (South Attleboro, MA) had a chance to throw her second perfect game in a span of eight days against Delaware on Sunday. She threw a six-inning perfect game against Drexel on Saturday, April 19 and retired all 15 batters she faced against Delaware. However, in the top of the fifth, she was hit in the lower leg with a foul ball while sitting in the Pride dugout. She came out to pitch the fifth and retired her 13th, 14th and 15th straight batters, but the coaching staff decided to remove her in the sixth as a precaution with the Pride holding an 8-0 lead. It was the second time in the Delaware series that she had seen a potential milestone day prevented due to a lack of innings. She had 13 strikeouts in the first game of the series, two shy of her career best, but the game was called after five innings due to the mercy rule after the Pride scored eight runs in the fifth to win 9-0. Déjà vu: For the second year in a row, Hofstra traveled to LIU for a midweek game and ended a long winning streak for the Blackbirds. Last season, LIU had a school-record 18-game win streak going when the Pride won 4-0 behind a no-hitter from Courtney Oliver (Swansea, MA) - see below. This year, the Blackbirds came into the contest with a 13- game winning streak, but Hofstra was able to come away with a 2-0 win over Wednesday, April 23. Oliver Throws No-No Unexpectedly: When Hofstra traveled to LIU last year, pitcher Courtney Oliver (Swansea, MA) threw a no-hitter in a 4-0 win. What made the story more remarkable is that she wasn't supposed to pitch. Kayleigh Lotti (South Attleboro, MA) began the game as the starter, but rolled an ankle on her first warm-up pitch in the middle of the first. Oliver replaced Lotti at the last minute, and then threw all seven innings without allowing a hit. A Heck Of A First: Freshman Sara Michalowski (Philadelphia, PA) earned an impressive first collegiate victory in the pitching circle. Michalowski started the Pride's first game of the Louisville Slugger Invitational on Feb. 22 against Georgia Tech and threw a five-hit shutout, while striking out four and walking none. Georgia Tech had the sixth highest scoring offense in the country in 2007, and returned five of its starters from last year's team.

Quick Starts: Hofstra has made a habit out of jumping out to early leads this season. The Pride has outscored its opponents in the first inning 28-5, while holding an even more pronounced 40-4 edge in the second inning. Combining the two frames, Hofstra has a commanding 68-9 edge in runs in the first two innings of games so far this season. Making that statistic more significant is that Hofstra has a 34-1 record this season when it scores the first run of the game, but only a 2-9 record when its opponent scores first. Hofstra has two comeback wins this season, both of which were 1-0 deficits (a 3-1 win over Lehigh on April 2 and a 5-2 win over Georgia State on April 12). Closing The Door: Getting off to quick leads (see above) is a good recipe for success, since Hofstra has been virtually impossible to come back against recently. The Pride was a perfect 32-0 last year when leading after five innings. So far this year, it is 28-0 when holding a fiveinning lead. The last time it lost a game it led after five innings was in the 2006 CAA championship round to Georgia State (a 4-3 defeat). Hofstra bounced back to win the second game 7-3 and capture the title. Since then, the Pride has won an impressive 62 games in a row when it has led after five innings. In The Driver's Seat: Hofstra maintained its hold on first place in the CAA standings by sweeping three games from Delaware over the weekend, and now has a magic number of one to secure the regular season title. The Pride is now 15-3 in the CAA, giving it a lead of 2.5 games with three contests left to play. Georgia State is in second place at 12-5, while James Madison is in third place at The top four teams qualify for the CAA Tournament from May 8-10, with the regular season champion earning the right to host. Hofstra has hosted five of the first six CAA championships since the league was founded in 2002, with the only exception coming in 2006, when Georgia State finished a half-game ahead of the Pride and earned the right to host in its first season in the league. CAA Standings (through April 30) Team CAA Overall Hofstra Georgia State James Madison Drexel Towson George Mason Delaware UNC Wilmington League Leaders: As you might expect from a team that leads the conference standings, Hofstra has dominated the CAA statistically. In conference games, Hofstra has the top team batting average (.357), almost 50 points higher than the closest competitor (Georgia State,.309). The Pride also has far and away the top team ERA at just 0.61 in conference games, well ahead of James Madison's Hofstra's.974 fielding percentage is also 15 points better than second-place Towson (.959). Individually, Hofstra has the top conference hitter (Michele DePasquale,.500), 84 points better than the second best hitter, and the top two pitchers (Courtney Oliver, 0.28 and Kayleigh Lotti, 0.37), well ahead of third place Meredith Felts of JMU (1.11). Pride Wins Pool At Under Armour Invitational: Hofstra had a terrific weekend at the Under Armour Invitational on March 7-9 in Clearwater, Florida, finishing with a 5-0 record and winning its pool, one of four teams of 24 to finish with a perfect record (along with Missouri, South Florida and Kennesaw State). The tournament was originally scheduled to include championship play, but was shortened due to rain. Hofstra picked up wins over Coastal Carolina (5-0), Illinois-Chicago (2-0) and East Tennessee State (5-2) on the first two days of the tournament, then closed out on Sunday, March 9 with big wins over 13thranked Baylor (8-7) and Michigan State (2-0). The Baylor win gave Hofstra a small measure of revenge after the Bears came to Hempstead last year in the NCAA Regionals and captured a 7-2 win over the Pride on its way to the Women's College World Series. The Under Armour marked the second tournament pool that the Pride has won already this season, after also finishing first at the six-team Louisville Slugger Invitational at the University of South Florida from Feb (see below). It was also the second year in a row that Hofstra has had a successful trip to the E.C. Moore Sports Complex in Clearwater, as it finished second out of 24 teams in the 2007 Adidas Invitational last season (see below). Hofstra Wins Louisville Slugger Invitational: Hofstra had an impressive performance at the University of South Florida Louisville Slugger Invitational from Feb The Pride finished first in the six-team field, which included Georgia Tech, South Carolina, South Florida, Wisconsin and Wright State. Hofstra compiled a 4-1 record at the tournament with the only loss coming at the hands of host South Florida in 10 innings (1-0). South Carolina also had one loss and was 3-1, due to a rain-shortened schedule, but the Pride had a head-to-head win over the Gamecocks (7-4) and would have had the tiebreaker anyway if South Carolina had finished 4-1. Hofstra also defeated Georgia Tech (4-0), Wisconsin (2-0) and Wright State (5-1) at the tournament. Hofstra Finishes Second At 2007 Adidas Invitational: Hofstra's pool title at the Under Armour Invitational and its overall title at the Louisville Slugger Invitational (see above) continued the Pride's recent history of impressive showings in the Tampa area. Last year, Hofstra had a remarkable run at the Adidas Invitational in Clearwater, Florida on March 8-11, finishing second in the 24-team tournament. The Pride finished pool play as the champion of its pool with a 4-1 record from March Hofstra went 2-0 on opening day, capturing an 8-2 win over Robert Morris and a narrow 2-1 win over Central Michigan. On Friday, March 9, the Pride fell in a pitcher's duel against Virginia Tech, as All-American Angela Tincher held Hofstra to four hits in a 1-0 win. The Pride bounced, back, though by defeating Ohio State 4-3 in eight innings and captured the pool title on Saturday, March 10 with a 5-3 win over Fordham. Hofstra moved on to the gold bracket (featuring the top two finishers from each of the four pools), and outlasted #25 North Carolina State 3-2 in nine innings on Saturday evening to advance to the semifinals. On Sunday, March 11, Hofstra came back from a 7-3 deficit to defeat #20 Georgia Tech 9-7 to reach the championship game against North Carolina. After spotting the Tar Heels a 2-0 lead in the first inning, the Pride fought back to within 2-1 heading into the sixth, but North Carolina scored twice with two outs in the sixth and added three more runs in the seventh to pull away for a 7-1 win.

Staff Infections: Good pitching has been contagious for the Pride this season, as every member of its four-person staff has put up impressive numbers. In fact, junior ace Kayleigh Lotti (South Attleboro, MA) actually has the highest ERA on the staff at Junior relief specialist Joanna Kralowetz (Mt. Airy, MD) is at 0.56, senior Courtney Oliver (Swansea, MA) is at 0.80, including 0.28 in conference, and freshman Sara Michalowski (Philadelphia, PA) is at The Pride has a team earned run average of just 1.07, ranking it fifth in the nation coming into the weekend. Division I Top Pitching Teams (through April 30) School ERA Michigan 0.82 UCLA 0.88 Florida 0.97 UMass 0.98 Hofstra 1.07 Iowa 1.10 Flashing The Leather: This year's Hofstra team should go down as the top defensive team in school history. The Pride has a fielding percentage of.978 through Wednesday's games, ranking it fifth in the nation out of almost 300 Division I schools. The 1994 team holds the school record for top fielding percentage in a season at.971. Hofstra had a streak of seven straight errorless games snapped in the second game of the Delaware doubleheader on Sunday. A Change Can Do You Good: Hofstra's record this season has been due largely to its pitching and defense (see above notes). A lot of the success, though, can also be traced back to adjustments and changes made by the coaching staff. A quick look at some of the changes the coaches have made to their line-up in the last two years: 1B - Michele DePasquale. Never played first base in her life before last spring, when she took over the starting role. She now has a fielding percentage. 2B - Casey Fee. Came off the bench as a right-handed hitter as a freshman. Turned around to hit lefty last year and is now hitting.353 with 18 stolen bases. SS - Pam Dreslinski. Played outfield for her first two seasons, and moved to shortstop as a junior. Has just seven errors this year. 3B - Genevieve Haney. Started at first base as a sophomore, but moved over to third base as a junior and has only four errors this season. LF - Melissa Hodge. Was recruited as a pitcher, but has carved out a role as a starting outfielder and one of the team's top clutch hitters, including a tying homer in the 2007 NCAA Regionals with two outs in the seventh. CF/RF - Erika Bernstein/Kris Root. Both batted righty before turning around to hit lefty last year. Root also had not played outfield before coming to Hofstra. SP - Courtney Oliver/Sara Michalowski. Both were recruited as hitters, but have become key members of a pitching staff that ranks fifth nationally in team ERA. RP - Joanna Kralowetz. Did not pitch at all as a freshman before taking over as a relief specialist last year. Has a career record of 15-4, and an 0.56 ERA this season. C - Carolann Lubach. Most schools recruited her as a position player due to her size (5-2). She has no passed balls this season, and has allowed only five wild pitches. Home, Sweet Home: Since Hofstra Softball Stadium opened in 1999, the Pride is a combined (.857) in 223 home games. That includes a 68-6 home record alltime against CAA teams (16-1 in the CAA Tournament). Going back to 2001 in the America East, Hofstra is 78-6 (.929) in its last 84 home games against league teams. Hofstra Dominant In Conference: The Pride has been remarkably consistent in league play since joining the America East in 1995, tallying a league record of (.832), including (.811) in the CAA. Hofstra has also compiled a series record in the CAA after sweeping Drexel last weekend, including since losing its first CAA series to Towson in Hofstra Conference Records Since 1995 Year Conference Record 1995 North Atlantic North Atlantic America East 12-0 (NAC renamed America East) 1998 America East America East America East America East CAA CAA CAA CAA CAA CAA CAA 15-3 Total (.830) Hofstra s NCAA History: Hofstra has made 10 NCAA Tournament appearances all-time, including five straight: Hofstra Softball - NCAA Division I Tournament History 2007: Hofstra 3, Harvard 2 (9 innings) Baylor 7, Hofstra 2 Albany 4, Hofstra : Hofstra 5, Penn State 4 (8 innings) Arizona State 2, Hofstra 0 (8 innings) Penn State 9, Hofstra : Arizona State 10, Hofstra 1 (5 innings) Hofstra 13, Mississippi Valley State 1 (5 inn.)
