1 2004 HOFSTRA UNIVERSITY SOFTBALL NOTES Hofstra (28-17, 12-3 CAA) at James Madison (28-28, 11-4) May 8-9 Harrisonburg, VA Streaks, Stats and Storylines: The winner of the Hofstra-JMU series will earn the top seed and serve as host of the 2004 CAA Tournament. Hofstra has hosted the first two CAA Championships, and has been the top seed in its tournament in eight of the last nine years. One win in the series would guarantee the Pride at least a share of the CAA regular season title, which would be the 13th year in a row that Hofstra will have won either a regular season or a postseason conference title. Hofstra has won its last 14 CAA series, since dropping two of three to Towson in its first-ever CAA series in Since then, the Pride is 40-5 against CAA teams. The Pride is 18-3 at home this year, 35-3 in its last 38 home games, and 27-1 all-time at home against CAA teams. It is only 4-7 in road games this year, though. Hofstra is 22-6 since returning north from its early-season Florida trips. The Pride is batting.344 as a team in that span, after hitting.194 in Florida, when it was Head Coach Bill Edwards won his 500th career game at Towson on April 3 and now has 519 wins in his 15 seasons. Junior Hailey Clark has hit 15 homers this season, including 14 in her last 28 games. She is two shy of the school record, set last season by Danielle Stewart. Freshman Ashley Lane has nine home runs, setting a new Hofstra record for homers by a freshman. She also has 38 RBI, five shy of the Pride freshman mark. Junior pitcher Callie Osborne has won her last six starts and is 10-3 with an 0.92 ERA. She is trying to become the first pitcher to have an ERA below 1.00 at Hofstra since She has thrown two no-hitters and a one-hitter in CAA games. Junior pitcher Adrienne Clark has won her last seven starts in a row. She threw a three-hit shutout against James Madison last year in the Pride's two-game sweep. Senior pitcher Alexis Alcantara is a perfect 5-0 in CAA games this spring and 9-1 in the last two seasons. Hofstra has committed only one error in its last 10 games, on a pickoff attempt vs. Stony Brook on Wednesday. The Pride had gone eight games in a row without an error previously HOFSTRA SOFTBALL SCHEDULE/RESULTS (28-17, 12-3 CAA) February USF/Wilson Tournament (Tampa, FL) 15 vs. Seton Hall L vs. Jacksonville W vs. Florida L at South Florida L at Central Florida (DH) L 1-4, L 4-5 (10) USF/Best Western Invitational (Tampa, FL) 20 vs. Maryland W vs. Temple W vs. Tulsa W vs. N.C. The Stakes: Hofstra travels to James Madison for a three-game series that will determine the top seed and the host for the CAA Tournament on May Hofstra enters the weekend with a one-game lead over James Madison at 12-3 in conference play, but should James Madison win two of three, it would tie Hofstra for first place and earn the tiebreaker. Hofstra has hosted the first two CAA Championships over the last two seasons. The Series: Hofstra has won all four games in the series with James Madison, although it has not been easy. The four games have been decided by a total of seven runs (see below). Both years, only two of the three games were played due to inclement weather. Previous Meetings: The Pride traveled to Harrisonburg in 2002 and defeated the Dukes in the opening game 2-1 in 12 innings on a solo homer by then-freshman Stefanie Kenney (Malvern, PA). The Pride then picked up a 3-1 win in the nightcap on Kenney's two-hitter. Last year, the Pride won the opening game 3-0 behind a three-hit shutout from Adrienne Clark (Gibsonton, FL) and another solo homer from Kenney. Hofstra then held on for a 4-3 win in the nightcap as former shortstop Danielle Stewart hit two solo homers and Tara Ulrich (West Nyack, NY) added one. Briana Carrera threw both games for the Dukes, allowing 13 hits in the two games combined. Hofstra Hopes For Another Banner Year: In addition to needing two wins to clinch the top seed, one win would enable the Pride to earn a share of the regular season CAA title. It would mark the 13th year in a row that the Pride has won a regular season or a postseason conference championship (or both). Hofstra has won its last six postseason championships, including the first two CAA titles and its last four in the America East. 4 About The Head Coach: Hofstra Head Coach Bill Edwards is in his 15th season with the Pride and has taken the program to unprecedented heights. Edwards won his 500th career game in a 9-0 win over Towson on April 3, and currently has a career record of He has been honored with Regional Coach of the Year Awards from the National Fastpitch Coaches Association six times, and has coached four All-Americans, 24 All- Region selections, and 34 All-Conference players. Hofstra In The CAA: In order to earn the top seed, James Madison will need to win a series from the Pride, something that has not happened in a while. Hofstra lost its first-ever CAA series to Towson two games to one in Since then, the Pride has won the last 14 series it has played in, compiling a 34-5 conference record during that span. Including the postseason, Hofstra is 40-5 in its last 45 games against CAA foes (improving to 41-7 alltime). Dating back to the start of the 1999 season in the America East, Hofstra has lost only one of the last 35 conference series it has played in, winning 27 and tying seven. Home, Sweet Home: A big reason why Hofstra would like to earn the top seed in the conference tournament is that it is has been nearly unbeatable at Hofstra Softball Stadium recently. The Pride is 18-3 at home this year and 35-3 in its last 38 home games, dating back to last year. Hofstra also has a record of 27-1 at home against CAA teams in its first three seasons in the league (including a perfect 6-0 in tournament games), and is 37-1 in its last 38 home games against conference opponents, dating back to the 2001 season in the America East. The only loss was a 10-inning, 4-2 defeat to Delaware on April 10 of this season. As a team, Hofstra is hitting.367 at home, while allowing its opponents to bat just.198. Road Worries: As dominant as the Pride has been at home, they have run into some speed bumps on the road. Hofstra is only 4-7 in road games this year, including 4-2 in the CAA, as the Pride has dropped road contests at Towson and at UNC-Wilmington. Hofstra also lost a non-conference road game at LIU on April 27 (7-5) and lost twice at Central Florida and twice at South Florida in the early part of the season. Going For 30: One other minor goal that the Pride (28-17) will be aiming for this weekend is its 30th win of the season. Hofstra had a streak of 10 straight 30-win seasons snapped in 2002, when it finished 28-25, but bounced back with a season last spring. The school record for wins is 42, set in the 2000 campaign, when the Pride ended up A Tale Of Two Seasons: Hofstra has always challenged itself during the early part of its schedule, and this season was no exception. The Pride opened with three early season tournaments in Florida and returned home with a 6-11 record. The Pride competed evenly with almost everyone on its southern trips, but dropped numerous close games. However, since returning north from the Florida swing, the Pride has really been in an offensive groove, tallying a 22-6 record in the 28 games since coming home. A brief look at the before-and-after team hitting stats for Hofstra: South (6-11) North (22-6) Batting Avg Home Runs 4 35 Runs Scored Runs per game Doubles Slugging Pct On Base Pct Walks Strikeouts A Tale of Two Seasons (Part II): As you might expect from a team that is batting.344 up north compared to.194 on its southern trips, several players have seen their offensive production skyrocket in the second half of the season. The best example is junior Hailey Clark (Caledon, Ontario), who returned from Florida batting.128 (5-39) with one homer and two runs batted in. Since then, she is hitting.419 with 14 homers and 30 RBI. A look at some of the before-and-after numbers for Hofstra players. Player South Stats North Stats Hailey Clark.138, 1 HR, 2 RBI.419, 14 HR, 30 RBI Adrienne Clark.136, 0 HR, 1 RBI.410, 1 HR, 17 RBI Ashley Lane.282, 2 HR, 7 RBI.422, 7 HR, 31 RBI Tara Ulrich.167, 1 HR, 7 RBI.364, 6 HR, 28 RBI Stefanie Kenney.143, 0 HR, 1 RBI.362, 3 HR, 13 RBI Lisa Wambold.152, 0 HR, 1 RBI.326, 2 HR, 12 RBI Consistent In The Circle: Unlike its hitting, Hofstra's pitching has been consistent in all areas of the country. The Pride had a 1.73 ERA in Florida and has actually slipped to 1.82 up north. Junior Callie Osborne (Oshawa, Ontario) returned from Florida with an 0.82 ERA and has been 0.95 in the northern part of the schedule. Adrienne Clark (Gibsonton, FL) seems to thrive in her home state, tallying an 0.94 ERA in Florida, but a 1.87 ERA in the North. Senior Alexis Alcantara (Levittown, PA) has gone in the other direction, improving from a 2.93 ERA in Florida to a 2.10 ERA up north.

5 The Home Run Queens: A year ago, Hofstra shattered the school record for homers in a season with 50, easily breaking the old mark of 29. After the graduation of the school's all-time career home run leader (Amanda Hallaway) and the school's singleseason home run leader (Danielle Stewart), many people thought that the Pride's success with the long ball would take a step backwards. That hasn't been the case, though, as the Pride has belted 39 homers this season in 45 games, almost exactly the same pace as last year (50 homers in 56 games). What makes this year's homer total even more impressive is that the wind has blown in at Hofstra Softball Stadium almost the entire spring, whereas last year, it was almost always blowing out. Hofstra hit five homers in Wednesday's doubleheader against Stony Brook, and also has 18 homers in 15 conference games this year. A Power Outburst: One of the biggest reasons why the Pride has been able to stay with last year's home run pace has been the emergence of junior Hailey Clark (Caledon, Ontario). Clark hit a combined two homers in her first two seasons, although the second came in the 2003 CAA Championship game, providing the margin of victory in the Pride's 2-1 win over Towson. She then hit one homer in the Pride's 17-game Florida swing to start the 2004 season. Since then, though, she has hit 14 homers in her last 28 games, including eight in 15 league contests. She homered in all three games of the series with UNCW, and has hit at least one homer in all five conference series to this point. She also hit two homers in a 7-5 loss at LIU on April 27, making her one of only seven players in school history with a multi-homer game. In addition, her 15 homers currently ranks second all-time in Hofstra history for a single season (see below). Lane Sets Freshman HR Record: Freshman outfielder Ashley Lane (Westbury, NY) homered in both games of a doubleheader against Stony Brook on Wednesday, setting a new Hofstra record for homers by a freshman with nine. That eclipsed the previous mark of seven, set last year by Tara Ulrich (West Nyack, NY). She also is now tied for fourth on the single-season list for all players, matching former All-American Amanda Hallaway in 2001 (see below): Hofstra Single-Season Home Run Leaders 17 Danielle Stewart Hailey Clark Dana Bennett Ashley Lane Amanda Hallaway 2001 In The Fast Lane To Success: Freshman Ashley Lane (Westbury, NY) is having one of the best freshman seasons of any player in Hofstra softball history. Lane enters this weekend with a.377 batting average, nine homers and 38 runs batted in, as well as an active 12- game hitting streak, longest for a Hofstra player this spring. She has already set the Hofstra record for homers by a freshman with nine, and is within five of the freshman RBI record (43 by Alicia Smith in 1997). Lane is batting.422 in the last 28 games since returning north from Florida. Smith's freshman season has probably been the highest standard to date, as she batted.401 with four homers and 43 RBI in Hofstra hopes that Lane can follow a similar path, as Smith was named a second-team All-American as a senior. A Sneak Preview: Freshman outfielder Ashley Lane (Westbury, NY) gave the Pride an early glimpse of her tremendous potential when she carried the Pride to the championship of the South Florida/Best Western Invitational. Lane batted 8-for-14 at the tournament, which ran from Feb She hit the game-winning homers in two of the Pride's four wins, a two-run blast to beat Maryland 3-1 and a solo shot to beat Tulsa 1-0. She also added a 4-for-4, two-rbi effort in a 5-1 win over North Carolina State. Lane was named the CAA Player of the Week after that performance, and she has since added three CAA Rookie of the Week Awards. Ulrich Keeps Cruising: Somewhat lost in the shuffle of the impressive power numbers from Hailey Clark and Ashley Lane is the fact that sophomore Tara Ulrich (West Nyack, NY) has continued to provide some pop in the middle of the line-up as well. Ulrich set a freshman home run record last year with seven (a mark broken by Lane this week), and has added seven more round-trippers this season. Her 14 homers ties Amanda Hallaway for the highest total for a Pride sophomore, and also already places her in the thick of the Hofstra career home run leaders (see below). Ulrich has also hit.364 with six homers and 28 RBI in the 28 games since returning north from Florida. 6 Weekend Warriors: Hofstra's pitching has tended to peak on the weekend, especially lately. Hofstra has allowed only 14 hits in its last six conference games, three-game sweeps over Drexel and George Mason. The Pride allowed only eight hits in the series as it swept Drexel 6-2, 15-0, and 8-0 on April Hofstra then held George Mason, the top hitting team in the CAA coming in, to only six hits in its three-game sweep on May 1-2 (7-1, 4-1, 8-0). Junior Adrienne Clark (Gibsonton, FL) opened the George Mason series with a three-hitter, junior Callie Osborne (Oshawa, Ontario) followed with a one-hitter, and senior Alexis Alcantara (Levittown, PA) wrapped up the weekend with a two-hit shutout on her Senior Day. During its bye weekend in between, the Pride played a non-conference doubleheader against Wagner on Sunday, April 25 and allowed only six hits in an 8-0, 6-0 sweep. Clark Ending Season Strong: Junior pitcher Adrienne Clark (Gibsonton, FL) has made a habit of coming on strong late in the year in the pitching circle. A year ago, she tied a school record by winning her last 11 decisions in a row to end the year, including a 1-0 nineinning win over Creighton at the NCAA Regionals in Lincoln, Nebraska. This year, she has won each of her last seven starts, dating back to a defeat to UNC- Wilmington on March 27. She did have a loss in relief during that stretch, though, at LIU on April 27. Hofstra probably wouldn't mind if she continued the trend of suffering losses on the 27th of the every month, since May 27 is the first day of the Women's College World Series. Clark shut out JMU on three hits last season. Osborne On A Roll: Junior pitcher Callie Osborne (Oshawa, Ontario) has won her last six starts since dropping a 4-2 decision to Delaware in 10 innings on April 10. Osborne has allowed only 15 hits in those six games (an average of 2.5 hits per game). She has five starts in CAA contests and has two abbreviated nohitters (against Towson and Drexel) and a one-hitter (against George Mason). CAA opponents are hitting only.135 against her this season. She is coming off a twohitter against Stony Brook on Wednesday, in which she struck out a season-high 10 batters in six innings. Under One: Junior pitcher Callie Osborne (Oshawa, Ontario) currently has a 10-3 record and an 0.92 ERA, and is trying to become the first pitcher to have an ERA under 1.00 at Hofstra since Stacy Jackson (0.96 in 1994). Jackson accomplished the feat twice, earning a school-record 0.84 ERA in Jennifer Engmann (0.88 in 1991) is the only other pitcher in school history to have an earned run average below Alcantara vs. The CAA: Senior pitcher Alexis Alcantara (Levittown, PA) has made a career out of beating CAA teams. The former walk-on is 7-3 with a 2.45 ERA overall this season, but is a perfect 5-0 with a teambest 1.04 ERA in league play. She has compiled a 9-1 record against CAA teams in the last two years. In addition, she shut out Towson and Delaware a year ago, and has shut out George Mason and Drexel this season. She did not start against James Madison last year, but picked up a save in relief, throwing one shutout inning out of the bullpen. She also saved two of the Pride's three wins in the CAA Tournament, throwing 4.1 innings of shutout relief in wins over Towson and George Mason. Alcantara has lost two other shutouts in the seventh inning, giving up a run in a 7-1 win over George Mason last season and two runs in a 5-2 win over Towson this year, when she took a no-hitter into the seventh. Flashing The Leather: Hofstra has really made significant improvements in the field recently. The Pride travels to James Madison with only one error in its last 10 games, and that came on a failed pick-off attempt against Stony Brook on Wednesday, which merely allowed a runner to advance from second to third. Prior to that, the Pride had gone eight games in a row without committing an error, the longest such streak in school history. During Bill Edwards' 15 seasons, the longest errorless streak the Pride had ever tallied was four games, which it accomplished on several occasions (most recently in April of 2000). The Pride has still not allowed anyone to reach base on an error in the last 10 games, dating back to the second game of a doubleheader against Quinnipiac on April 20. Armed And Dangerous: Senior catcher Meaghan Almon (East Greenwich, RI) has been a huge part of the Pride's success in recent seasons. She has played in 216 out of a possible 217 games, missing only a road game at Drexel last year due to illness. Almon has caught every inning of every game this spring, something she also did as a freshman and as a sophomore. Where Almon makes the biggest difference for the Pride is on defense, where her throwing arm has deterred the opposition's running efforts. Opponents are only stealing bases this season (compared to by the Pride). Almon went through a stretch of 30 games in a row without allowing a stolen base to a league opponent, before George Mason stole two bases last weekend. One of those stolen bases came on a close play at second after a change-up, and the other saw Almon's throw arrive in plenty of time, but shortstop Laura Sweeney collided with the baserunner while covering second and the ball squirted free.

7 Speed Kills: Hofstra isn't entirely dependent on its home run power this season, as it has also utilized its speed at the top of the line-up. Sophomores Lisa Wambold (Hatboro, PA) and Laura Sweeney (Hopewell Junction, NY) have combined for 26 stolen bases this year in 30 attempts. Wambold is 14-of-16, and is only five shy of the single-season school record of 19, set by Robyn Trezise in Wambold also had 12 stolen bases last year (in 13 tries), giving her 26 career stolen bases, already sixth on the Pride's all-time list. Trezise holds the school record with 51. Hofstra Single-Season Stolen Base Leaders 19 Robyn Trezise Jen Pawol Lisa Wambold Robyn Trezise Laura Sweeney Lisa Wambold LaMeka Anderson Christine Moran Heather Brousseau 2002 CAA Weekly Awards: Hofstra was been well represented in the CAA Weekly Awards this spring, as five different players have won 11 different awards. Freshman Ashley Lane (Westbury, NY) has won three Rookie of the Weeks and a Player of the Week. Callie Osborne (Oshawa, Ontario) has won three Pitcher of the Week Awards and Hailey Clark (Caledon, Ontario) has won two Player of the Weeks. Alexis Alcantara (Levittown, PA) and Adrienne Clark (Gibsonton, FL) have also each won a Pitcher of the Week honor this spring.
