The Pride has never faced either Albany or Baylor. However, Hofstra Head Coach Bill Edwards and Baylor Head Coach Glenn Moore did compete against each other in the 2000 NCAA Tournament, when Moore was the head coach at Louisiana State. Hofstra held a 1-0 lead going into the sixth inning of that contest, before host and seventh-ranked LSU scored twice with two outs in the sixth inning to come from behind for the 2-1 win and end the Pride s season at Hofstra Softball NCAA Division I Tournament History 9 Appearances (12-18): 2007: vs. Harvard 2006: Hofstra 5, Penn State 4 (8 innings) Arizona State 2, Hofstra 0 (8 innings) Penn State 9, Hofstra : Arizona State 10, Hofstra 1 (5 innings) Hofstra 13, Mississippi Valley State 1 (5 inn.) The Pride has three wins over teams currently ranked in the top 25, including 4-3 over Big 10 champion Ohio State, 3-2 over North Carolina State and 9-7 over Georgia Tech. Hofstra also defeated LIU 4-0. The Pride also dropped 1-0 games to Michigan, Virginia Tech and Southern Illinois, fell twice to North Carolina (3-1, 7-1), and lost its season opener to Washington (8-1). Hofstra picked up most of its key wins at the Adidas Invitational from March 10-12, when it finished second in the 24-team field. The Pride won its pool (which included Ohio State and Virginia Tech), defeated North Carolina State in the quarterfinals of the gold bracket, beat Georgia Tech in the semifinals, before finally falling to North Carolina in the championship game as the Tar Heels broke open a 2-1 game late for a 7-1 win. Another Banner Season: Hofstra s 2007 CAA regular season championship marked the 16th straight season in which the Pride has won a conference title (either regular season or tournament), dating back to the 1992 season in the East Coast Conference, when it won the conference tournament. The Pride missed out on the regular season CAA title in 2006, but still regrouped to win its ninth postseason title in a row with a 7-3 win at Georgia State. The Pride then captured its tenth consecutive conference tournament title last weekend (see previous page). 4 Lane Rewriting Record Book: Senior outfielder Ashley Lane (Westbury, NY) enters the NCAA Tournament already holding the school s career records for home runs (40) and (180), easily outdistancing the second-place holders. Tara Ulrich ( ) is second in homers with 29, while Lisa Ciavardini ( ) is second in RBI with 146. Lane also has 238 career hits, which ranks her third in school history, while her 53 doubles put her in third place in Hofstra annals. She also has 100 walks, two shy of the school record held by Hailey Clark ( ). Bernstein is hitting.405 in the last 33 games, while Fee is hitting.393 with 39 runs scored. Bernstein and Fee both batted right-handed as freshmen last year, but turned around and learned to hit left-handed this season. Another Grand Opening: Sophomore pitcher Kayleigh Lotti (South Attleboro, MA) made her college debut last year at the USF/Wilson Invitational with a five-inning nohitter in a 10-0 win over Temple. This year, she managed to repeat history at the same tournament, opening up her 2007 campaign with a five-inning no-hitter in an 8-0 win over East Tennessee State. Lotti struck out 10 and walked none in the East Tennessee State win, with an error allowing the only runner. Lotti also threw four innings in a combined no-hitter against Rutgers in the Pride s home opener this year, relieving Courtney Oliver (Swansea, MA). Lotti Overcomes Open-Heart Surgery: Sophomore pitcher Kalyeigh Lotti (South Attleboro, MA) has had a significant impact on the Pride in two seasons. She was named first-team All-CAA and first-team NFCA All- Region as a freshman, and enters the postseason with a 19-4 record this year. Lotti almost never had the chance to perform in college, though. During the summer before her senior year of high school, she was pitching in a showcase tournament in Colorado and was experiencing some health problems. She visited a walk-in clinic, which recommended that she see a heart specialist when she returned home. After a battery of tests, Lotti was diagnosed with coarctation of the aorta, a potentially fatal condition which required open-heart surgery. Lotti recovered in time to pitch her senior year of high school at St. Raphael's in Pawtucket, Rhode Island, recording a 0.00 ERA. Moving Up The K Charts: Despite only being in her sophomore season, sophomore Kayleigh Lotti (South Attleboro, MA) already ranks fourth in career strikeouts with 487, putting her on pace for over 1,000 (the school record is only 638). She broke the single-season record of 277, set by Erin Phillips in 1996, in the conference tournament and became the first Hofstra pitcher to record 300 strikeouts in a season in the championship game. She now 304 this year, heading into NCAA play. It was her ninth shutout of the year (eight of which have come in CAA games). She has been dominant in all eight games throwing a no-hitter, two one-hitters, five twohitters and a three-hitter (see below). 5 Lotti Riding 16-Game Win Streak: Sophomore pitcher Kayleigh Lotti (South Attleboro, MA) enters the NCAA Tournament with wins in each of her last 16 decisions, improving her record to It marks the second longest streak in Hofstra history, behind only the 21 straight wins for Callie Osborne in Osborne s streak broke the previous school record of 11, held by three pitchers (Stacy Jackson in 1995, Alicia Smith in 2000, Adrienne Clark in 2003). Lotti has not lost since dropping a 3-1 decision to James Madison on March 25. Her only other losses came 1-0 to Michigan (with the only run scoring on a throwing error), 3-1 to North Carolina and 2-0 to South Florida. Lotti Sets Career High In Strikeouts (Again): Sophomore pitcher Kayleigh Lotti (South Attleboro, MA) set a new career high in strikeouts in an April 28 win over Drexel, tallying 15 K s. Lotti came into the year with a career high of 12 strikeouts, matched that total against N.C. State on March 10, broke it with 13 in a win over George Mason on March 31, broke that with 14 in a win over Georgia State on April 8, and then broke that against Drexel on Saturday. She has had double-digit strikeout totals 14 times this season (see below), with Hofstra emerging victorious in all 14 of those games. She reached double figures in all three games of the CAA Tournament last weekend, including 13 in the opening game against UNC Wilmington, one shy of the tournament record. Airy, MD) was a reserve first baseman as a freshman last year, but came back this season and started getting work in the pitching circle in the fall. She has since developed into the Pride's primary relief pitcher, appearing in 25 games this season and compiling an 11-3 record. In 63.0 innings, she has struck out 61 and walked only four, with one of those four walks an intentional pass against Virginia Tech. She had a pair of memorable outings at the Adidas Invitational from March 8-11, picking up the win in when she came on in relief against Fordham in the final game of pool play when she also added the tiebreaking two-run single in her only at-bat of the year. She then picked up the win in relief in the Pride's 9-7 win over #20 Georgia Tech in the semifinals of the tournament with 3.2 innings of two-hit relief. She also made her second career start at Lehigh on April 4 and threw a seven-hit shutout with eight K s and no walks. Kralowetz came on in relief in the Pride s regular season finale against UNC Wilmington and allowed three hits in five innings to get the win, which clinched the regular season title. Making Them Count: Sophomore catcher Carolann Lubach (Langley, WA) helped secure the 2007 Colonial Athletic Association championship with a two-run homer in a 3-1 win over Georgia State in the title game. It was the first homer of the season for Lubach, and the third in her two-year career. Remarkably, she also homered last season in the CAA championship game, a 7-3 win over Georgia State, leading off the seventh inning with a solo homer to give the Pride a 6-3 lead. Oliver Throws No-No In Unexpected Start: Junior pitcher Courtney Oliver (Swansea, MA) was named CAA Pitcher of the Week on April 30 after throwing a no-hitter in a 4-0 win over LIU on April 24, which snapped LIU s 18-game winning streak. Making the story even more remarkable is that she wasn t even scheduled to start. Sophomore Kayleigh Lotti (South Attleboro, MA) suffered a minor injury while warming up in the middle of the first inning and left the game before throwing an official pitch. Oliver stepped in and threw all seven innings, allowing no hits and striking out three. DePasquale Comes Through In Clutch: Freshman first baseman Michele DePasquale (Waterford, NJ) hit a walkoff homer to defeat Delaware 2-1 in eight innings on April 22. DePasquale had a key role in the Pride s CAA success, as she had a memorable first day of conference competition against James Madison on March 24. In the Pride s extrainning win in the nightcap, DePasquale twice made spectacular defensive plays to keep the game tied at 3-3, including a leaping catch of a scorching line drive in the seventh inning with two outs and runners on second and third. DePasquale then proceeded to deliver the game winning RBI single in the bottom of the 10th inning to give Hofstra the 4-3 victory. She also added a key RBI double in the sixth inning of the regular season finale against UNC Wilmington, putting the Pride ahead 2-0. Hofstra Dominant In Conference: The Pride has been remarkably consistent in league play over the last decade since joining the America East Conference (then called the North Atlantic Conference) in Hofstra has had at least a.700 league winning percentage every season since 1995, while finishing first in 11 of 13 years (the other two years it finished second by one game in 2001 to Boston University and a half-game in 2006 to Georgia State). Its overall conference record since 1995 is (.832), including (.806) in the CAA. 7 Pride On 15-Game Win Streak: Hofstra enters the NCAA Tournament with a 15-game winning streak, dating back to a 6-1 loss to Towson on April 14. The Pride has outscored its opponents over the last 15 games, and remarkably has allowed more than four hits only once in that entire span (six hits to Georgia State in the CAA championship game). Hofstra has also committed only seven errors in that span, while its opponents have committed 33. Sophomore pitcher Kayleigh Lotti (South Attleboro, MA) has won 11 of those games in the circle, compiling a 0.68 earned run average and 134 strikeouts in 82.2 innings of work. The Pride is holding its opponents to just a.131 batting average in that 15-game span, while hitting.273 at the plate. The Big 4-0: Hofstra comes into the NCAA Tournament with a record, reaching the 40-win plateau for the sixth time in school history. The Pride reached 30 wins for the 15th time in the last 16 years with its 4-0 win over LIU on April 24. The only exception was 2002, when the Pride suffered through an injury-plagued campaign, but still rallied to win its last 14 games to finish In every other season since 1992, Hofstra has won at least 33 games. Hofstra 30-Win Seasons Year Record Year Record Closing The Door: Hofstra s extra inning win over Delaware on April 22 came after the Blue Hens tied the score with a run in the top of the sixth. The Pride, though, bounced back to continue its unblemished record when leading after five innings. This season, Hofstra is 31-0 when leading after five innings. Hofstra Finishes Second At Adidas Invitational: Hofstra had a remarkable run at the Adidas Invitational on March 8-11, finishing second in the 24-team tournament. The Pride finished pool play as the champion of its pool with a 4-1 record from March Hofstra went 2-0 on opening day, capturing an 8-2 win over Robert Morris and a narrow 2-1 win over Central Michigan. On Friday, March 9, the Pride fell in a pitcher's duel against Virginia Tech, as All- American Angela Tincher held Hofstra to four hits in a 1-0 win. The Pride bounced, back, though by defeating Ohio State 4-3 in eight innings and captured the pool title on Saturday, March 10 with a 5-3 win over Fordham. Hofstra moved on to the gold bracket (featuring the top two finishers from each of the four pools), and outlasted North Carolina State 3-2 in nine innings on Saturday evening to advance to the semifinals. On Sunday, March 11, Hofstra came back from a 7-3 deficit to defeat #20 Georgia Tech 9-7 to reach the championship game against North Carolina. After spotting the Tar Heels a 2-0 lead in the first inning, the Pride fought back to within 2-1 heading into the sixth, but North Carolina scored twice with two outs in the sixth and added three more runs in the seventh to pull away late for the 7-1 win. Home, Sweet Home: Hofstra is 21-1 at home this year, continuing its remarkable run of success at Hofstra Softball Stadium. Since the stadium opened in 1999, the Pride is a combined (.857) in 207 games. Hofstra has been particularly dominant against conference teams at home, compiling a 62-6 record all-time against CAA teams (including 16-1 in CAA Tournament games). Going back to the 2001 season in the America East, Hofstra is 72-6 (.923) in its last 78 home games against league teams. Playing The Spoiler: Hofstra stepped out of conference in the last few weeks and spoiled some hot streaks from some of the other top teams in the region. Hofstra defeated Fordham 8-1 on the road on April 18, after Fordham came in with a six-game win streak and a 22-1 record in its previous 23 games. On April 24, Hofstra traveled to Long Island University and came away with a 4-0 win, snapping the Blackbirds 18-game win streak. After returning north from its early-season southern trips, the Pride went a perfect 10-0 in non-conference games, while outscoring its opponents by a combined Working Overtime: Hofstra defeated Delaware 2-1 in eight innings on April 22 on a walk-off homer from freshman first baseman Michele DePasquale (Waterford, NJ). The Pride has now compiled a perfect 5-0 record in extra-inning games this year.
