Cincinnati Reds Press Clippings May 15, 2018 THIS DAY IN REDS HISTORY 1913-Substituting in left field for an injured Bob Bescher, Beals Becker has five hits, including a double, and ties a club record with five runs scored. Becker only appears in 30 games for the Reds, collecting a.296 batting average with 32 hits, in his only season with the team Romano struggles as Reds win streak ends By Mark Sheldon 2:23 AM ET MLB.COM SAN FRANCISCO -- Sal Romano relies on his fastball a lot to be the foundation for his starts. But when that primary pitch isn't working for the right-handed Reds starter, as was the case Monday, it makes for a rough night. A very good stretch of Reds pitching, and winning, came to an abrupt end during a 10-7 loss to the Giants at AT&T Park. It snapped Cincinnati's season-high six-game win streak. Romano left in the third inning down by a 6-1 score, forcing his lineup to unsuccessfully play catch-up all night. "I was missing my spots all night," Romano said. "It was one of those days. It happens throughout the season. It's how you bounce back. The team really showed a lot of fight there, the whole game, with the bats coming around." Romano provided his poorest start of the season as he lasted 2 1/3 innings with six earned runs, eight hits and two walks while striking out two. Entering the night, Romano had a 2.05 ERA over his last four starts. The Reds pitching staff did not allow more than three runs during the win streak while posting a 1.64 ERA. According to MLB Network research, Romano came into the game throwing his fastball 69.9 percent of the time this season, fifthhighest among qualified Major League pitches. But he struggled to locate that pitch during his brief outing while throwing 66 pitches. Two-out hits were particularly damaging for Romano in the first two innings. Evan Longoria hit a two-out single up the middle that scored Andrew McCutchen, and Brandon Crawford followed with a two-run double lined to left field for a quick 3-0 deficit. Cincinnati scored a run in the top of the second inning but the Giants made it 4-1 on McCutchen's second double of the night -- an RBI hit down the left-field line. "I thought I threw some pretty good offspeed pitches. But I just never got in that flow," Romano said. "I've got to be able to bear down and get guys out with two outs. A lot of two-out hits." San Francisco already had two more hits and a walk with one out in the third inning when Kelby Tomlinson made it 6-1 with a tworun single to center field. Romano was pulled for reliever Jackson Stephens, who delivered 2 2/3 scoreless innings. "Sal has been doing a really good job for us. His stuff wasn't as sharp tonight," Reds interim manager Jim Riggleman said. "He was out there competing like he always does but it just wasn't quite coming out of his hand the way it had been lately, and the Giants made him pay for it." Tucker Barnhart, who hit an RBI single in the second inning, returned in the fourth to slug a two-run homer to right field against Giants starter Chris Stratton. Leading off the sixth against Stratton, Scott Schebler hit the first pitch for a homer to close the gap to two runs. Schebler finished the game 3-for-4 and was a triple shy of hitting for the cycle.

A three-run bottom of the sixth against reliever Dylan Floro -- aided by a pair of errors by shortstop Jose Peraza -- put the game away for San Francisco, though Adam Duvall's three-run homer in the ninth made it interesting. Of the Giants' 14 hits in the game, there were seven doubles. MOMENTS THAT MATTERED Votto exits with injury With two outs in the top of the third inning, Joey Votto hit a single to left field that Gregor Blanco let get by him with a barehanded attempt that went for an error that advanced Votto to second base. Votto appeared to be in some discomfort after the hit and exited before the bottom of the fourth with lower back tightness. "It just kind of cropped up on him and became more and more uncomfortable," Riggleman said. YOU GOTTA SEE THIS In the bottom of the eighth inning, Reds center fielder Billy Hamilton made a tough play look easy, and added some flare. On a Crawford drive to the warning track in left-center field, Hamilton made the catch on the run and turned and fired the cutoff throw as he ran up the padding of the wall. According to Statcast, it was a four-star catch with a catch probability of 46 percent. Hamilton covered 105 feet in 5.4 seconds with a sprint speed of 29.8 feet per second. UP NEXT Tyler Mahle (3-4, 3.86 ERA) has won two of his last three starts and will try to win again when the Reds continue their series vs. the Giants at 10:15 p.m. ET on Tuesday. Mahle allowed one unearned run, three hits and a career-high four walks over five innings in Thursday's 4-1 win over the Dodgers. Lefty Ty Blach is scheduled to start for San Francisco, which should have righty hitter and ex-giant Duvall back in the starting lineup. Votto departs early with tight lower back By Mark Sheldon 2:21 AM ET SAN FRANCISCO -- The Reds could be without first baseman Joey Votto in their lineup Tuesday after he exited Monday's 10-7 loss to the Giants with lower back tightness. Votto departed before the bottom of the fourth inning and was replaced in the field by Adam Duvall. In the top of the third inning, Votto hit a single to left field and went to second base on Gregor Blanco's fielding error that let the ball get by him. Votto appeared to be laboring as he ran out of the batter's box. "It just kind of cropped up on him and became more and more uncomfortable," Reds interim manager Jim Riggleman said. "He let me know before the game it was nagging a little bit. He insisted, 'I want to play.' He just wasn't going to be able to run real hard. When the left fielder missed the ball on his single, he kind of had to turn it up a little bit and go and really looked uncomfortable. We decided to get him out of there." The hit extended Votto's hitting streak to six games, tying his season high. He has reached base safely in 27 of his last 28 games since April 15. He is batting.291/.414/.446 with six home runs and 23 RBIs in 41 games this season - including a.375 average over his last 11 games. "He'll be working with the trainer tonight," Riggleman said. "When he comes in tomorrow, we'll re-evaluate it. We might end up giving him the day tomorrow." When asked about how his back was feeling after the game, Votto deflected with humor. "I was feeling pretty good and then that earthquake hit and all of a sudden everything got thrown off right around 7:18 p.m. in the middle of my first at-bat," Votto joked. "Oh, I got taken out of the game because of it, are you kidding me? I'm a sensitive soul." During Votto's first at-bat, a small earthquake did occur and was measured at 3.5 according to the USGS. It did not appear noticeable to most at AT&T Park but was picked up by a broadcast television camera.

Lorenzen, DeSclafani start rehab assignments Castillo, Romano get nod for Saturday's doubleheader By Mark Sheldon May 14th, 2018 SAN FRANCISCO -- The Reds bullpen has come together nicely of late, and it could soon become even more fortified with the return of Michael Lorenzen. On Monday, Lorenzen worked his first rehab-assignment game with Double-A Pensacola and pitched one scoreless inning with one hit and one strikeout while throwing 12 pitches. Lorenzen has been out since the middle of March, when he strained the right teres major muscle near his right shoulder. "With not having to be stretched out as much, I think he's got a schedule where he will go at least three more times," Reds interim manager Jim Riggleman said before Pensacola's game began vs. Biloxi. "We want to get him to where he does throw back-to-back days and/or multiple innings." Since Lorenzen is on the 10-day disabled list, he can return whenever he is deemed ready. "We're probably looking at a week to 10 days," Riggleman said. After a rough start to the season, Cincinnati's bullpen entered Monday leading the Major Leagues in ERA since April 27 (2.60) with a league-leading 77 strikeouts over the past 65 2/3 innings. Adding Lorenzen to a strong bullpen will give Riggleman another option. "It's a good issue to have," he said. DeSclafani makes rehab start Before Lorenzen made his relief appearance, Anthony DeSclafani made his first rehab-assignment start for Pensacola. DeSclafani, who is on the 60-day DL with a strained left oblique, pitched three perfect innings with four strikeouts while throwing 31 pitches. DeSclafani was scheduled for four innings and pitches but he had the misfortune of a rain delay happening two batters into his start. Before the game, the club had planned on him reaching his pitch count in the bullpen if he didn't get there vs. Biloxi. Riggleman did not have a specific timeline for DeSclafani's activation. He hasn't pitched for the Reds since he was injured in mid- March and is not eligible to come off the DL until May 28. "We have not talked about that specifically at all. We're looking at late May or early June," Riggleman said. Pitcher rehab assignments can last up to 30 days. Doubleheader starters named The Reds announced that Luis Castillo and Sal Romano would be the starters Saturday vs. the Cubs in a day-night doubleheader. One of the games is a makeup for an April 3 rainout. Riggleman did not reveal the order in which the starters would pitch. Since the club is allowed to carry a 26th man for the second game, a reliever will likely be called up to help the bullpen. Paxton, Lindor win on AL side, Gennett for NL By Deesha Thosar MLB.com May 14th, 2018 No-hitter. Dominant hit streak. Four homers in four days. As we approach the quarter-mark of the season, three players remind us that they're only heating up. Major League Baseball recognized last week's top performers on Monday by announcing Mariners left-hander James Paxton and Indians shortstop Francisco Lindor as the American League co-players of the Week and the Reds' Scooter Gennett as the National League Player of the Week, presented by W.B. Mason.

Paxton threw a no-hitter on just 99 pitches while striking out seven Blue Jays, accomplishing the feat in his homeland. Showing no signs of fatigue, he threw as hard as 100 mph in the ninth inning. "The Big Maple" became the first Canadian to pitch a no-hitter in his home country, joining Dick Fowler of the 1945 Phillies as the only Canadians to do it. Coming weeks after a bald eagle famously landed on him during a pregame ceremony in Minneapolis, it is the third time Paxton has earned the weekly honor. "It doesn't get much cooler than that," Paxton said. "When you can get your name put next to a guy like Randy Johnson, at any time, it's pretty cool. I'm honored to have gotten my third one and be right next to him with three of those awards." This was one of the few times a no-hitter performance didn't receive sole possession for Player of the Week honors, simply because another AL athlete put up video-game numbers in the same span. Lindor went on a massive tear this past week, slashing.600/.652/1.400 with four homers, eight runs, five RBIs and four doubles to win back-to-back AL Player of the Week honors -- and his second overall. The Indians shortstop extended his hit streak to a careerhigh 14 games, surpassing last year's 13. With numbers like that, Paxton is in good company. While most of the buzz was around his new teammate Matt Harvey, Gennett quietly put together an incredible week. The Reds second baseman homered for the fourth time in as many days on Friday, going 4-for-5 with two runs and three RBIs against the Dodgers. It was the first time in his career that he homered in more than two consecutive games. In five games last week, Gennett slashed.591/.591/1.227, with 10 RBIs, seven runs and two doubles. The 28-year-old's performance helped lead the Reds to a season-high six-game winning streak, while earning him his second career NL Player of the Week honor. "It's just baseball, man," Gennett. "So I just try to stay level and realize that I'm not always doing to do good. And when you're slumping or doing bad, you just realize you're going to come out of it. Keep it simple." CINCINNATI ENQUIRER Joey Votto on the earthquake: I got taken out of the game because of it, are you kidding me? I m a sensitive soul (wink, wink) John Fay, jfay@enquirer.com Published 2:09 a.m. ET May 15, 2018 Updated 10:20 a.m. ET May 15, 2018 SAN FRANCISCO It was the earthquake, Joey Votto said. That s what forced him out of the game. I was feeling pretty good and then that earthquake hit and all of a sudden everything got thrown off right around 7:18 p.m. in the middle of my first at-bat, he said. So he felt the earthquake? Oh, I got taken out of the game because of it, are you kidding me? he deadpanned. I m a sensitive soul. There was a mild earthquake in San Francisco, and it happened during Votto s first at-bat. Votto did leave Monday night s game. But it was with a tightness in his lower back that forced him out the game and it was un-earthquake related. It just kind of cropped up on him and became more and more uncomfortable, Reds manager Jim Riggleman said. He let me know before the game it was nagging a little bit. He insisted I want to play. He just wasn t going to be able to run real hard. When the left fielder missed the ball on his single, he kind of had to turn it up a little bit and go and really looked uncomfortable. We decided to get him out of there. The fact that Votto joked about after the game tells you that the back issue is not too severe, although Riggleman said Votto might get Tuesday off. Votto left the game in the fourth inning. Adam Duvall, 2-for-2 with a three-run homer, replaced Votto. Votto dropped that theory, too. I think Jim sensed that Duvall would have a really good game and he just benched me after that, Votto said. I was like 'ah, that earthquake wore me out a little bit, OK, that's enough, let's get Duvall in.' He bet right, so... we'll see." Finally, Votto did allow that he doesn t think it s serious.

I feel fine, he said. Bad night for Romano puts end to Cincinnati Reds win streak; Votto leaves game with back tightness John Fay, Published 1:18 a.m. ET May 15, 2018 Updated 10:26 a.m. ET May 15, 2018 SAN FRANCISCO When it finally went bad for Sal Romano, it went really bad. Romano lasted only 2 1/3 innings and allowed six runs in the Reds 10-7 loss to the San Francisco Giants that snapped the Reds six-game winning streak. More bad news for the Reds: Joey Votto left the game in the fourth inning with lower back tightness. Votto said he felt OK after the game. Romano had been the most consistent of the Reds starters. He had allowed a total of seven runs over 27 innings in his last five starts. But he struggled at the start Monday. He allowed six hits, walked two and struck out two. He was able to get ahead of hitters. He just could not put them away. I was missing my spots all night, Romano said. It was one of those days. It happens throughout the season. It s how you bounce back. The team showed a lot of fight there, the whole game with the bats coming around. Personally, I was missing my spots and not locating my pitches like I have been. It was one of those days. I ll bounce back in five days. Romano gave up a double to Andrew McCutchen with one out in the first. Buster Posey followed with a walk. Brandon Belt hit a high fly ball to deep center that Billy Hamilton ran down and caught as he banged into the wall. "Fastball location," Romano said. "I thought I threw some pretty good off-speed pitches. But never got in that flow, I ve got to be able to bear down and get guys out with two outs." Evan Longoria shot one through the middle to score McCutchen. The real damage came when Brandon Crawford sent one into the left-field corner for a two-run double that made it 3-0. Romano had not allowed more than two runs in any of his previous five starts. The Reds got a run back in the second. Scott Schebler doubled with two outs. Tucker Barnhart singled to get Schebler home. Romano gave the run right back in the second on McCutchen s two-out, RBI double. Romano could not stop the bleeding. When he allowed two more runs in the third, Reds manager Jim Riggleman went to his bullpen and brought in Jackson Stephens. Sal has been doing a really good job for us," Riggleman said. "His stuff wasn t as sharp tonight. He was out there competing like he always does but it just wasn t quite coming out of his hand the way it had been lately and the Giants made him pay for it. Stephens stranded the runners. The Reds got back in the game in the fourth. Schebler singled with one out. Three pitches later, Barnhart just missed hitting one into McCovey Cove. It didn t splash down, but it was deep enough for Barnhart s third of the year, and it was 6-3. Stephens put up zeroes in the fourth and fifth. Schebler got the Reds a run closer by hitting the sixth inning out to right for his fifth of the year. The Giants broke it open three runs (two earned) in the sixth against Dylan Floro. Adam Duvall, who replaced Votto, hit a three-run homer in the ninth to make it 10-7.

If Amir Garrett gets a vote, he'll stay in the bullpen for the Cincinnati Reds for this season at least John Fay, jfay@enquirer.com Published 9:10 p.m. ET May 14, 2018 SAN FRANCISCO The consensus in the Reds Twitter-verse is that Amir Garrett should be moved to the rotation post haste. That s where you get the most value out of him, the argument goes. And Garrett s vote? I like where I m at, he said. Garrett hears the talk. I hear it all the time, he said. But wherever I can help the team is where I want to be. We ve got guys who are able to handle the workload starting now. We ve got a good staff. I feel the bullpen is a really good fit for me right now. Maybe starting will come across again. Maybe in spring or something like that. I m happy where I m at. Garrett went into Monday with a 1.57 ERA over 19 games and 23 innings. He had allowed 15 hits, walked seven and struck out 26. Reds manager Jim Riggleman is happy with where Garrett is at as well. I think he can kind of really go max effort and he s effective with both lefties and righties, Riggleman said. He can just air it out for a number outs whether it s three or six outs and not have to develop and maintain so much of a third pitch. It s keep coming at hitters with the hard stuff. He likes that. He s very aggressive doing it. I imagine he could still start. It would take some serious bullpen sessions to really get more refined with a third or fourth pitch. Garrett, the 26-year-old left-hander, had been a starter exclusively coming up in minors. He began last season in the rotation. He had early success. He was 3-2 with a 4.35 ERA when the Reds optioned him to Triple-A Louisville. He struggled upon his return. He made two starts (nine innings, 13 runs) before going on the disabled list with hip inflammation. He struggled again after coming off the DL (0-3, ERA). He was optioned to Triple-A Louisville at that point. He was off the radar a bit going into this season, but he pitched his way into the picture with a great spring. Garrett had one of his best outings Sunday in the Reds 5-3 victory over the Los Angeles Dodgers. He entered in the seventh with a runner on second. He struck the first batter he faced and got a meek popup to end the inning. He struck out the side in the eighth. Best he s felt? As the season s gone on, my arm is getting used to being used back-to-back days, every other day, Garrett said. I m starting to get adjusted more. The ball felt good coming out. I stayed with the fastball a lot. Garrett hit 98 mph on a few of those fastballs. His is averaging 95.4 on his fastball this year, up from 92.1 last year, according to fangraphs.com Again, he s not ruling out starting down the road, but not for this year. I really wouldn t like to make the transition right now, Garrett said. I want to keep this mindset. I knew in spring that I d be in the bullpen. I had my mind set up for the bullpen role. I was up for the challenge. Bullpen has been bullish for the Cincinnati Reds, but Riggleman wants to tweak roles a bit for his veterans John Fay, jfay@enquirer.com Published 8:44 p.m. ET May 14, 2018 Updated 10:36 p.m. ET May 14, 2018 SAN FRANCISCO The Cincinnati Reds bullpen has a huge part of the six-game winning streak the Reds took into Monday night s game against the San Francisco Giants.

The relievers had gone 23 1/3 innings during the streak and allowed only two runs. The relief corps put for four scoreless innings Saturday and three scoreless Sunday. That s all well and good, but Reds manager Jim Riggleman would like to tweak things going forward. He wants his two veteran right-hander Jared Hughes and David Hernandez to get back to being one-inning guys for the most part. The two combined for the last 12 outs Saturday. Riggleman wants to leave the extended outings to the long guys Austin Brice, Dylan Floro and Wandy Peralta. You d like to have guys who can go multiple innings, Riggleman said. With Hughes, we ve done that more than I d like. Like to get him back in three- or four-out situation instead of six outs. Same thing with Hernandez. Guys like Brice, Floro and Stephens and Wandy, they ve been more accustom to two innings-plus. Hernandez and Hughes are two guys we d like to back off a bit. When (Micheal) Lorenzen gets here, it could help in that area. Lorenzen, on the disabled list all season with a shoulder strain, threw a scoreless in a rehab assignment with Double-A Pensacola Monday. His return is not that far off. With not having to be stretched out as much, I think he s got a schedule where he will go at least three more times, Riggleman said. We want to get him to where he does throw back-to-back days and-or multiple innings. Then he ll take at least a day off. We re probably looking at a week-to-10 days. Lorenzen will make a strong bullpen, even stronger. The Reds lead the majors in relief pitching since April 27 with a 2.60 ERA as well as strikeouts by relievers with 77. It s very comforting to know you can go to someone and they re not overwhelmed by the situations from the seventh to the ninth inning, Riggleman said. They re composed. They re throwing strikes. You don t always get them out. But, if you re throwing it over the plate like our guys are doing, somebody can make a play for you and get out of an innings. REHABBING: Right-hander Anthony DeSclafani went three perfect innings in his first rehab start for Double-A Pensacola. He struck out four. He only threw 31 pitches, but his first inning was interrupted by a 21-minute rain delay. The plan was if he any long innings to finish up in the bullpen to reach his 60-pitch limit. Lorenzen threw in the same game. He allowed a hit and struck out one. It was his first rehab outing as well. ADD ONE: The Reds will add a pitcher in the 26th-man role for the day-night doubleheader with the Chicago Cubs Saturday but not to start. Luis Castillo and Sal Romano will start the games, although the order has not been set. Our starters are on the normal day because of the off day, Riggleman said. (The 26th man) would just be another guy to help out. POW SCOOTER: After hitting a home run in four straight games, Reds second baseman Scooter Gennett was named the National League Player of the Week, announced Monday. Gennett, who grew up in Lebanon, had 13 hits in 22 at-bats last week, adding 10 RBI and seven runs. The 28-year-old won the award last year during the week he homered four times in one game. It s the second time a Reds player earned player of the week honors this season. Joey Votto received the recognition at the end of April. Gennett rested a sore shoulder at the beginning of the month, coming off the bench in four straight games. Returning to the lineup, he's helped spark the Reds offense throughout their six-game winning streak. GIANT KILLERS: Entering Monday, the Reds had a against the San Francisco Giants since the That s highest winning percentage of San Francisco opponent.

THE ATHLETIC Joey Votto leaves game with back tightness but blames it on earthquake By C. Trent Rosecrans May 15, 2018 SAN FRANCISCO If Joey Votto s back issue is serious, he wasn t showing it. The Reds first baseman left Monday s 10-7 loss to the Giants in the middle of the fourth inning with lower back tightness, replaced by Adam Duvall. Reds interim manager Jim Riggleman said Votto had told him before the game that his back was bothering him, but he still wanted to play. Votto, on the other hand, was jovial afterward, indicating a magnitude 3.5 earthquake centered near Oakland during his first at-bat in Monday s game was the culprit for his early exit. I was feeling pretty good and then that earthquake hit and all of a sudden everything got thrown off right around 7:18 p.m. in the middle of my first at-bat, Votto said. The earthquake came right before the first pitch of his first at-bat, a called strike from Giants starter Chris Stratton. TV cameras shook before the pitch was thrown and Votto was asked if he felt it. Oh, I got taken out of the game because of it, are you kidding me? Votto said. I m a sensitive soul. In his second at-bat, Votto hit a single to left in the third inning and replays showed him grimacing even as he ran down to first. He was showing signs of more pain after left fielder Gregor Blanco misplayed the ball, allowing Votto to move up to second. When the left fielder missed the ball on his single, he kind of had to turn it up a little bit and go and really looked uncomfortable, Riggleman said. We decided to get him out of there. Riggleman said the Reds would likely give Votto the day off on Tuesday against Giants left-hander Ty Blach. Duvall will probably get the start at first base, Riggleman said. The Reds have used a four-man rotation in the outfield all season, if Votto misses any significant time, it would simplify that rotation, moving Duvall to first and leaving an everyday outfield of Jesse Winker in left, Billy Hamilton in center and Scott Schebler in right. You see Billy s value out there in center field with a big ballpark, he made some really nice plays, Riggleman said. If Joey doesn t play, we d just keep the two left-handed hitters in there tomorrow against their left-hander and have Adam at first. Duvall was 2 for 2 with a three-run homer in relief of Votto, which served for more material for Votto. I think Jim sensed that Duvall would have a real good game and he just benched me after that, Votto said. I was, like, Ah, that earthquake wore me out a little bit, OK, that s enough, let s get Duvall in. He bet right, so we ll see. I feel fine. Votto insisted he felt fine before leaving the clubhouse I feel good, he said. There was better injury news in Biloxi, Mississipi, where Anthony DeSclafani (left oblique strain) threw three perfect innings for Double-A Pensacola and was followed by Michael Lorenzen (right shoulder strain), who threw a scoreless inning of his own. DeSclafani struck out the first two batters he faced before the game was delayed by 21 minutes by rain. He then finished the first with a ground ball and went on to pitch three innings. He didn t allow a runner and struck out four. DeSclafani threw 31 pitches, 24 for strikes. Lorenzen allowed a single and struck out a batter in his lone inning. Lorenzen threw 12 pitches, eight for strikes. Before the game, Riggleman updated the timetable on both: On DeSclafani: After that, he would certainly go again the 19th or 20th. We have not talked about that specifically at all. We re looking at late May or early June (for a return to the big leagues).

On Lorenzen: With not having to be stretched out as much, I think he s got a schedule where he will go at least three more times. We want to get him to where he does throw back-to-back days and-or multiple innings. Then he ll take at least a day off. We re probably looking at a week-to-10 days.
