2 2006 Season in Pictures 2006 Bruins - The Season in Pictures The UCLA baseball team posted a overall record, which included an appearance in the NCAA Malibu Regionals. In June s MLB Draft, 12 Bruins were selected, including first-round pick Dave Huff (previous page), Hector Ambriz (arm raised, above), Chris Jensen (cutout, left) and Josh Roenicke (right page, top left). Head Coach John Savage (right page, left) helped guide UCLA to a third-place Pac-10 Conference finish. The Bruins were led by a productive group of freshmen, including shortstop Brandon Crawford (above, middle), Jermaine Curtis and Ryan Babineau. 4 Fall Signees Early Signing Period Recruiting Class for Head coach John Savage announced on Nov. 10, 2006, that 10 student-athletes signed National Letters-of-Intent during the early signing period to attend UCLA and play baseball. Headed by assistant coach and recruiting coordinator Brian Green, the third recruiting class under Savage and his coaching staff includes six pitchers, two outfielders and two infielders. Savage s previous two recruiting classes have earned high national honors. His first class ( ) was ranked fifth-best by Baseball America and ninth-best by Collegiate Baseball. The group earned a No. 13 national ranking (Baseball America) and No. 18 mark (Collegiate Baseball). Matt Grace Palos Verdes Estates, Calif. (Palos Verdes HS) LHP 6-4, 195 Earned 2006 All-CIF Southern Section Division IV Player of the Year accolades and was named to the 2006 All-CIF Division IV first team captured 2006 Pioneer League co-most Valuable Player honors after compiling an 11-1 record and 1.25 ERA named the Daily Breeze player of the year helped lead Palos Verdes High School to the CIF Division IV Championship at Angel Stadium in June 2006; pitched 7.0 innings and earned the win, allowing one run on five hits in Palos Verdes 7-1 victory played for Angels Elite Baseball and the San Diego Padres scout team competed in the U.S. Junior National Team tryouts in Joplin, Mo was nominated at Palos Verdes HS for the Student- Athlete High School Heisman (selected by counselors and teachers) an excellent scholar-athlete who maintains a 4.1 GPA and has earned California Scholarship Federation membership. This recruiting class includes three AFLAC All-Americans right-handed pitcher Erik Goeddel (Hillsborough, Calif.) and outfielders Jason Heyward (McDonough, Ga.) and Brett Krill (Laguna Nigel, Calif.). Four players have earned All-CIF honors, and all 10 student-athletes have earned all-league first- or second-team honors on their respective high school teams. This group will report to UCLA in the fall of We feel that this recruiting class is as game-ready as any in the country, Savage said. We have signed impact players that will contribute right away. Coach Green has done an outstanding job putting this class together. These student-athletes will represent UCLA in a first-class manner both on and off the field. Mitchell Beacom San Diego, Calif. (University City HS) LHP 6-8, 215 Twice earned San Diego Union-Tribune All-Academic honors...missed a portion of his sophomore season and all of his junior year with a foot injury... recorded a 1.00 ERA and a 1-2 record as a sophomore and posted a.351 batting average as a freshman...at the Area Code camp in December 2005, earned most valuable player accolades as a pitcher...also competed on the Orange County Braves scout team...aside from achievements on the field, is a three-year varsity water polo letterwinner as the team s goalkeeper...an all-league first-team selection, he established the school record for career blocks and earned defensive most valuable player honors three times... his mother and father, Luann and John, both attended UCLA, and Luann competed for the UCLA swimming team. Ryan Dent Long Beach, Calif. (Wilson HS) INF 6-0, 175 R/R As a junior, posted a.425 batting average, two home runs, 26 RBI and 20 stolen bases gained All-Moore League first-team honors as an infielder tabbed the seventh-best prospect in the World Wood Bat Class of 2007 by Baseball America; also listed by Baseball America as the fastest baserunner and the most exciting player at the Jupiter World Wood Bat Association s fall championship was named to the players to watch list as a shortstop by the Los Angeles Times earned Wilson HS impact player of the year in 2006 competed in the 2006 Connie Mack World Series for the Midland Redskins also played for the Angel and Dodger Elite Teams and the Cincinnati Reds and Atlanta Braves scout teams as a sophomore, compiled a.390 batting average, two home runs, 42 hits, and 29 RBI and stolen bases earned All-Moore League first-team honors as a shortstop captured All-CIF first-team accolades named the Century Club Player of the Year named to the Los Angeles Times All-Region Team and to the Los Angeles Times diamond standout players to watch list named Wilson HS baseball MVP as a freshman, earned All-Moore League second-team accolades voted the second most impressive freshman in CIF baseball by the Los Angeles Times in 2004 earned Wilson HS rookie of the year honors. Niko Gallego Yorba Linda, Calif. (Esperanza HS) INF 5-10, 150 R/R As a junior, earned 2006 All-Sunset League first-team honors as a junior posted a.400 batting average and tallied 24 runs scored, 13 RBI and 11 stolen bases in 2006 captured the 2006 Esperanza Baseball Rookie of the Year award named to the 2006 California High School Southern Section South All-Star Championship team had the game-winning RBI-single in the bottom of the seventh inning of Esperanza s CIF Division I first-round playoff game against Riverside Arlington; went 2-for-4 in that game helped lead Esperanza to the 2006 Sunset League title has been a three-year Principal s Honor Roll student. Erik Goeddel Hillsborough, Calif. (Bellarmine Prep HS) RHP 6-1, 175 Was a 2006 AFLAC All-American has been ranked as high as the No. 2 high school player (2007 graduate) by Prospect Plus/Baseball America tabbed as the seventh-best pitcher among Perfect Game s National Top 100 Pitchers listed the 38th-best prospect for the 2007 MLB Draft by Baseball America earned All-WCAL (West Catholic Athletic League) first-team accolades as a junior (2006) and sophomore (2005) captured 2006 Central Coast Section Scholar-Athlete of the Year honors compiled a 6-1 record on the mound in 2006, recording a 1.47 ERA and 69 strikeouts in 47 innings; at the plate, hit at a.411 clip and collected nine home runs, 38 RBI and 31 runs scored was listed as the 17th-best player at the 2006 Area Code Games in Long Beach, Calif., by Baseball America; also tabbed as the Area Code Games prospect with the best breaking pitch registered a 9-1 pitching record in 2005, posting a 1.21 ERA and 111 strikeouts in 69 innings played for the Brewers Area Code Team and the Reds Scout Team. (Servite HS) RHP 6-3, 180 Recorded a 7-1 record, a 1.40 ERA and 49 strikeouts as a junior in 2006, leading Servite to a share of the Serra League Championship posted a 5-0 record and 0.81 ERA in Serra League contests earned All-CIF Southern Section Division I second-team accolades and All-Orange County second-team honors compiled a.313 batting average as a junior and hit at.330 clip his sophomore season also excels as the starting quarterback on the football team; earned co-offensive Player of the Year honors in the Serra League as a junior in 2005; completed 146-of-235 passes for 2,005 yards and 15 touchdowns; also rushed for 404 yards on 80 carries, scoring four touchdowns a fine scholar-athlete who maintains a 3.4 GPA and is an honor student at Servite. Brett Krill Laguna Niguel, Calif. (Aliso Niguel HS) OF 6-4, 200 R/R Was a 2006 AFLAC All-American tabbed the 18th-best prospect in the World Wood Bat Class of 2007 by Baseball America posted a.385 batting average and.430 on-base percentage as a junior tallied 30 hits, 22 runs scored, nine doubles, two home runs, 16 RBI his junior season earned 2006 All-Sea View League first-team accolades as a junior at Aliso Niguel HS competed for the 2005 Team USA Youth National Team and helped lead the U.S. squad to the silver medal at the World Championships in Monterrey, Mexico also played in the Tournament of Stars for Team USA in Joplin, Mo competed for the Orange County Braves Scout Team in 2005 and 2006, the Brewer Area Codes in 2006 and the Perfect Game National Showcase played in a Connie Mack League with the ABD Bulldogs and the Newport Beach Quakes. Rob Rasmussen Arcadia, Calif. (Pasadena Poly) LHP 5-11, 160 Has compiled a 26-2 three-year varsity record with 291 career strikeouts as a starting pitcher at Pasadena Poly as a junior in 2006, tallied a 0.56 ERA and 49 strikeouts in 25 innings was named to the All-CIF Southern Section first team, All-State second team, San Gabriel Valley All-Area first team and captured Prep League most valuable player accolades in 2005 posted a 1.40 ERA, 9-1 record, three complete games and one shutout as a sophomore led all California high school players with 147 strikeouts in 2005, according to MaxPreps.com as a freshman, led all southern California pitchers with 13 wins, according to the Los Angeles Times competed for the Babe Ruth 19-and-under team in the summers of 2005 and 2006 selected to the 2006 All-Star Team and World Series Tournament Team, which won the 18-and-under World Series in Newark, Ohio pitched two complete games in the World Series Tournaments, posting 23 total strikeouts. Tim Schlatter Sacramento, Calif. (Sacramento CC) RHP 6-1, 190 Compiled a 5-5 record, a 5.06 ERA, 44 strikeouts and 20 walks in 65.2 innings as a freshman at Sacramento City College in 2006 helped lead Sacramento CC to the state finals (runner-up) and to first place in Northern California posted a 3-0 record in the playoffs, pitching 21.1 innings and recording a 3.38 ERA; defeated College of Sequoias in an elimination game, allowing three runs in 8.0 innings; also picked up the victory over Cypress College in the Final Four as a senior at De La Salle High School (Concord, Calif.), Schlatter posted a 10-2 record as a senior with a 2.05 ERA, 67 strikeouts and 15 walks in 82 innings earned All-Bay Valley Athletic League (BVAL) honors recorded 42 strikeouts and just six walks in 45.1 innings as a junior; collected a 5-4 record and 2.95 ERA. 36
