Orioles first round selection Manny Machado blasted the eventual game-winning triple in the bottom of the sixth inning to score both runs. Brenden Webb drew a lead off walk and Mychal Givens singled him to third before the Machado hit. The Shorebirds bullpen tossed five scoreless innings and held the Grasshoppers to just hit in the final five innings. MACHADO TOP SHORTSTOP PROSPECT: In the most recent edition of Baseball America, Shorebirds shortstop Manny Machado was tabbed as the top overall shortstop prospect in professional baseball. BULLPEN DELIVERS: Chris Petrini, Clay Schrader and David Walters combined to shutdown the Grasshoppers from the fifth inning forward on Thursday night. Petrini threw three scoreless innings in middle relief, Schrader threw the eighth inning and David Walters picked up his tenth career minor league save. DOUBLE PLAY #1: The dynamic double play combo of Machado and Givens turned their first double play of the 2011 season in game one. Greensboro had the lead off man aboard when Pedro Mendoza grounded to Givens who started the double play. CAMERON ROTH GETS NOD (More on Page 10): Cameron Roth will make a spot start in game two of the doubleheader tonight. Roth is not unfamiliar with the starting role as he made 12 starts last season for the Bluefield Orioles. In 55.1 innings pitched, he struck out 47 batters and walked 21. Roth celebrated his 22nd birthday on April 5. He played his college baseball at the University of North Carolina-Wilmington. The Poquoson, Virginia native was selected in the 29th round of the 2010 First Year Player Draft. PLAYER TO WATCH WHO S HOT/WHO S NOT KIERON POPE Kieron Pope, who went 0-for-3 last night, has played in 301 minor league games over his five plus season career. He has 28 career home runs and 152 career RBIs. Pope hit.232 with 12 home runs for the Shorebirds in 2008 and.250 with six home runs for Delmarva in Pope was selected in the 5th round of the 2005 draft by the Orioles. WHO S HOT MYCHAL GIVENS Mychal Givens, the Orioles second round pick in 2009, finished the 2010 campaign on an 8-game hitting streak with the Ironbirds. He went 12-of-33 (.364) with three homers and five RBIs during the stretch. WHO S NOT TRENT MUMMEY In 13 games towards the tail end of the season with Delmarva, Mummey went hitless in seven of them. He finished with nine hits in 54 at-bats (.167). Last night, he went 0-for-4 to open the 2011 season.

In 68.0 innings pitched, he surrendered just 52 hits. The New York-Penn League hit just.215 against him. Adleman allowed two or fewer earned runs in nine of his 13 starts last season. DEBUT TONIGHT: Tonight marks Adleman s first start in the South Atlantic League. He is in his second season in the Orioles organization. THE NO-NO: Adleman s best performance last season was a seveninning gem against the Staten Island Yankees on August 2. He did not allow a single yet. The S.I. Yankees managed only one hit in the game. Adleman recorded two other shutouts on the year (June 22 against Brooklyn IP & July 22 against Tri-City IP). FIRST GEORGETOWN PITCHER SELECTED SINCE 07: When his name was called in the 24th round last year, Adleman become the first Georgetown player to get drafted since 2007 when Matt Bouchard was selected in the 11th round by the Mets. HOYAS RECORD: Adleman holds the career strikeout record at Georgetown with 224 over his career. He fanned 58 in 2009, 66 in 2008, 45 in 2007 and 55 in TWO YEARS IN THE COASTAL PLAIN LEAGUE: In 2008, Tim Adleman was an all-star in the CPL, a wood-bat summer collegiate league, for the Wilson Tobs. He posted a perfect 8-0 record with a 1.84 ERA. He went 4-4 with a 3.95 ERA in his second season with the Wilson Tobs.

Perdue Stadium MANAGER RYAN MINOR Minor enters his second season at the helm of the Shorebirds and his fourth on the Shorebirds coaching staff. He was named the 11th manager in team history prior to the 2010 season. The Shorebirds finished in his first season as manager. In 2008 and 2009, Minor excelled as the hitting coach for the Shorebirds. Under Minor s direction in 2008, the Shorebirds finished with a team batting average of.261, third best in the South Atlantic League. In 2009, Minor helped hone the skills of some of the top prospects in the Orioles organization. Ron Welty blossomed, leading the Shorebirds with a.290 batting average. Joe Mahoney increased his batting average by 55 points from 2008 to 2009 ( ). Minor helped usher five position players to Frederick by seasons end. Minor spent the 2006 and 2007 seasons as a coach in independent ball, serving as hitting and infield coach for the York Revolution in 2007 and worked as a coach for the Road Warriors in The 37 year-old was originally drafted by Baltimore in the 33rd round of the 1996 First Year Player Draft. Minor played 142 games in four major league seasons ( ) with the Orioles and Montreal Expos. Minor is remembered by Orioles fans for taking Cal Ripken, Jr. s place at third base on September 20, 1998, the night Ripken ended his consecutive games played streak. He also played in the Seattle, Los Angeles Dodgers and Florida Marlins organizations from He spent the 2005 season with the independent Lancaster Barnstormers before ending his playing career. Machado is the highest overall draft pick to ever suit up for the Delmarva Shorebirds. He was selected with the third overall pick in the 2010 draft. This is Hernandez s second season in the Orioles organization. Hernandez played 15 seasons in the major leagues for nine different teams. His longest tenure with one team was with the Chicago Cubs from 1994 to In 1,587 career games, Hernandez has a lifetime batting average of.252 with 168 home runs and 603 RBIs. He was named a 2002 NL All-Star. LAST 2-0 START: The Shorebirds started 2-0 in 2009 when they beat Lakewood at FirstEnergy Park twice to open the year. The Birds also started 2-0 in 2005, the last year they made the postseason. They have not started 3-0 since at least the 2003 season. BRITTON LATEST TO MAKE MAJORS: On April 3, 2011 former Shorebirds pitcher Zach Britton made his debut for the Baltimore Orioles in a starting role against Tampa Bay. Britton won 12 games for the Delmarva Shorebirds in 2008 (12-7, 3.12). Britton finished seventh in the South Atlantic League in ERA and fourth in innings pitched (147.2). He became the first former Shorebirds player to make the major leagues since David Hernandez made his MLB debut on May 28, Hernandez pitched for the Shorebirds in OPENING DAY RESULTS: Below is a look at the Shorebirds on opening day over the last eight years. Givens was a superstar pitcher and shortstop coming out of Plant High School in Tampa, Florida. He played shortstop in five games last season for the Shorebirds. Givens played second base six times late in the year with the Aberdeen Ironbirds, across from Manny Machado. L.J. Hoes (2009 Shorebirds player) began to make the transition to second base while he was with the Shorebirds. SECOND HALF MVP IS BACK: Third baseman Ty Kelly was voted the Shorebirds Second Half MVP by the Shorebirds Fan Club. Kelly led the Shorebirds last season in games played (129), at-bats (487), hits (126), RBIs (58), total bases (180) and sacrifice hits (11). Kelly also finished second on the team in doubles (30) and walks (68). TOUGH TO GO DEEP AT PERDUE: Arthur W. Perdue Stadium is one of the tougher parks in the league to hit the long ball. There were only 70 homers hit last season at Perdue Stadium. Greensboro s NewBridge Bank Park led the league with 143 home runs last season. Rome s State Mutual Stadium saw the fewest home runs hit last season (40). The chart below shows the amount of home runs hit at each ballpark around the SAL last season. Only one Shorebirds player has registered double digit homers over the last two seasons; Tyler Kolodny (10, 2010). He has belted 18 of his 28 career minor league home runs while with the Shorebirds. Pope blasted a career best 12 homers in 2008 for the Birds. Jason Fransz owns the career Shorebirds record with 28 home runs between the 2004 season (6) and the 2005 season (22). DOWN YEAR AT HOME LAST YEAR: The Shorebirds had their fair share of troubles at Perdue Stadium last year. They went at home. Prior to that, the Shorebirds had posted a winning record at home in six straight seasons. The Shorebirds are normally much better at home than on the road. In fact, over the last six years, the Shorebirds have 41 more win at home than on the road. Year Home Record Road Record ALL-STAR RETURNS: 2010 South Atlantic League All-Star Brian Conley is back for his third stint with the Shorebirds. Conley lead the Shorebirds in batting average last season at.270. He also led the Shorebirds with 70 walks and a.401 on-base percentage. The Gaithersburg, Md. native earned a late promotion to Frederick. In 16 games, he hit.222 (10-45) with a home run and four RBIs. SOUTH ATLANTIC LEAGUE LOADED: The South Atlantic League is currently home to the top three picks in the 2010 First Year Player Draft; Bryce Harper (Hagerstown), Jameson Taillon (West Virginia and Manny Machado (Delmarva). The eighth overall pick in the draft, Delino Deshields, Jr. is also in the league with the Lexington Legends. FIRST MULTIPLE YEAR SKIP SINCE... Gary Kendall is the last manager to lead the Shorebirds for consecutive seasons. Ryan Minor enters his second season as the leader of the Shorebirds. After Kendall left for Aberdeen, Ramon Sambo managed in Orlando Gomez was the manager in 2009 and Ryan Minor took over in Kendall and Joe Ferguson ( ) are the only skippers in history to manage for three consecutive seasons. SHOREBIRDS SCHEDULE TIDBITS The 2011 Shorebirds schedule features 70 home games and 70 road games. Besides those obvious figures, here are some other tidbits. Eight of their first 12 games will be against the Greensboro Grasshoppers. The Shorebirds play the Grasshoppers 16 times in the first half and only five times in the second half of the year. The Shorebirds travel to Augusta this season for the first time since August of The Shorebirds go to Augusta, Georgia during the first road swing of the season. The Shorebirds will play only 11 home games in the month of June (15 road games). The two teams that the Shorebirds do not play this season are the Greenville Drive (Red Sox) and Lexington Legends (Astros). BEATO MAKES MLB DEBUT: Former Shorebirds pitcher Pedro Beato made his major league debut for the New York Mets this season. Beato went 7-8 with 4.05 ERA for the Shorebirds in He was selected by the Mets, the team that first drafted in him in 2005, in the 2010 Rule 5 Draft. Beato has pitched in one game this season for the Mets. He tossed two scoreless innings. COLLEGES REPRESENTED THIS YEAR: The Shorebirds roster features a lot of players with college experience; Tim Adleman (Georgetown), Scott Copeland (University of Southern Mississippi), Jason Gurka (Angelina JC), Brandon Holloway (Bluefield College), Jarret Martin (Bakersfield JC), Ryan Palsha (Diablo Valley JC, Chris Petrini (University of California-Berkeley), Cameron Roth (UNC Wilmington), Clay Schrader (San Jacinto JC), Aaron Swenson (Youngstown State), David Walters (Francis Marion), Justin Dalles (South Carolina), Kyle Moore (Alabama), Mike Flacco (CCBC- Catonsville), Adam Gaylord (Stanford), Ty Kelly (University of California-Davis), Brian Conley (Towson), Trent Mummey (Auburn), Kipp Schutz (Indiana) and Brenden Webb (Palomar JC). MATTES BACK ON STAFF: Former Shorebirds pitcher (1996), Troy Mattes, returns for his second season as the pitching coach in Delmarva. Mattes posted a 10-9 record with a 2.86 ERA back in 1996 for the Shorebirds. He also recorded five complete games and three shutouts. He made eight starts for the Expos in 2001.
