Last Game Tyler Smith lined a sharp single to right in the bottom of the 11th to send the Oregon State baseball team to a 4-3 victory over Gonzaga in the Beavers 2011 season opener Saturday at Beiden Field. Smith took a 3-2 pitch from Gonzaga reliever Mark Phillips and lined it right in front of Tyler Chism in left, bringing in Brian Stamps for his third run of the game and the Beavers first victory of the 2011 season. The Beavers had loaded the bases after Stamps tripled with one out Quite The Opener Brian Stamps had perhaps on the best opening-game appearances for the Beavers in recent memory. He tripled in the 11th and reached on bunts earlier in the game. He also scored three runs in Saturday s win. Against Fresno State The Beavers will see a relatively new opponent on Sunday in Fresno State. The teams have not met since the 2000 season when the Bulldogs swept a three-game series in Fresno. OSU has not defeated the Bulldogs since winning 5-2 in 1991 in Fresno. Quite The Lineup Change Of the 10 players who started Saturday s game, just three did so for the second consecutive opening day. Jared Norris, Carter Bell and Andrew Susac all started the season off for the second straight year. Bell is the lone Beaver to have started the last three opening days. The trio combined to go 4-for-11 with two RBI Saturday. Still No ERA Despite allowing three runs Saturday, the Beavers pitching staff has an earned run average of Two of the three runs were scored after an error and the third came on a passed ball in the eighth inning. Notes Of Importance OSU is already 1-0 in one-run games this season. The Beavers were 11-3 in such games last season. The Beavers started a right-hander on opening day for the sixth time in seven years on Saturday. They are 5-1 in such games. Sam Gaviglio threw four quality starts last season, and threw one in his first game of 2011 after allowing no unearned runs in 6 2/3 innings. Andrew Susac had two hits Saturday for his seventh career multi-hit games. Tony Bryant has gone four straight games dating back to 2010 without allowing a run. He has thrown 7 2/3 innings in that stretch. Upcoming Games/Probables Date Opponent Time (PT) Location TV OSU Starter Opponent Starter Sun., 2/20 Gonzaga 1:00 p.m. Fresno, Calif.
