1 Cincinnati Reds Press Clippings July 28, 2017 THIS DAY IN REDS HISTORY 1977-The Reds lose, 16-15, to the Cubs in a game with a National League record-tying 11 home runs. Five of them came in the first inning, also tying a major league mark MLB.COM Stephenson still working to crack delivery code Rookie back to drawing board after career-high seven walks in Thursday's loss By Mark Sheldon / 12:33 AM ET + 15 COMMENTS MIAMI -- The Reds' coaching staff has worked hard to help Robert Stephenson get on top of his delivery and create more of a downward plane with his fastball. But on Thursday against the Marlins, a majority of the rookie starter's fastballs seemed up -- way up. Strikes were a premium for Stephenson while walks were plentiful. The 24-year-old right-hander walked a career-high seven batters over 4 1/3 innings as the Reds were handed a 4-1 loss by the Marlins. "Command was a challenge today for sure," Reds manager Bryan Price said. Of the 92 pitches Stephenson threw, 48 were fastballs. Of those pitches, 26 were called for balls. According to Statcast, none of his fastballs garnered any swings and misses. Command issues have been an issue for Stephenson at Triple-A and during his brief big league exposure. But in his first start upon his recall from Louisville on Saturday against the Marlins in Cincinnati, he issued one unintentional walk over 5 1/3 innings. Many of Thursday's issues were mechanical. "In the bullpen even warming up today, I'm hitting my spots fine," Stephenson said. "It's just when I got into the game today, I felt like I got too aggressive and I was collapsing my backside, opening up early and missing a lot up and armside. I was never able to get it down and in." Stephenson walked two batters in the first, second and fifth innings. The only inning he didn't walk a batter was the fourth, but Derek Dietrich led off that frame with a home run. "This isn't happening because he doesn't believe he can get hitters out," Price said. "We just haven't been able to crack the code on the delivery that's going to provide the consistent quality strike. When I talk about quality, you don't have to hit a gnat's backside to have command. But be down in the zone and be able to cover the bottom part of the strike zone when you need to be down there. That's been a tough challenge for Robert here for a bit." Stephenson, who allowed three earned runs and four hits with two strikeouts, was able to limit the damage considering how often he was in trouble. The only time the walks came back to haunt him was the fifth inning when the first two batters walked and eventually scored. He left with the bases loaded and one out. While his fastball was lacking, Stephenson was able to execute with the slider he has worked hard to improve in the Minors. "I think we threw two curveballs all night, if I'm not mistaken. The rest were sliders and he did a great job," catcher Tucker Barnhart said. "We tried to throw some more breaking balls, more than we would have liked to just to try to get him be more out front, be better mechanically. We grinded tonight." Stephenson was disappointed that he wasn't able to build on his last outing and have more success. "Especially because in my bullpen, I felt like I did really well working on exactly what I wanted to work on," he said. "Then when I got into the game today, I just completely abandoned it. Not that I meant to, but that's what happened out there. It was pretty much the opposite of what I've been working on."

Gennett's RBI too little, too late against Marlins By Patrick Pinak and Mark Sheldon / MLB.com 1:12 AM ET + 66 COMMENTS MIAMI -- Derek Dietrich homered and had three RBIs for all the support Chris O'Grady needed as the Marlins defeated the Reds, 4-1, Thursday night at Marlins Park. The Marlins have now won five of their last seven games and three of their last four against the Reds, who've lost four straight and are 2-12 since the All-Star break. O'Grady's craftiness played well against Cincinnati hitters, who entered hitting an MLB-low.210 in the second half. The rookie southpaw turned in the best outing of his career, tossing seven scoreless innings while striking out five and walking two en route to his second victory. "I think he had better command today," Marlins manager Don Mattingly said. "He was having some trouble with his command over in Cincinnati, he got himself in trouble. For him to be successful, he's gonna have to be able to command the ball, throw strikes when he wants, throw balls that look like strikes that end up being balls, he needs to be able to do that off the edges. And I thought he was able to do that." The Reds left 12 men on base in the game, including seven with O'Grady pitching. It was the eighth time in 14 second-half games Cincinnati was held to two runs or fewer. "I think we had about 11 balls in play hard over the course of the game, several baserunners, and didn't do anything with those opportunities, unfortunately," Reds manager Bryan Price said. "We just haven't run into a couple of guys in the lineup that can really do the damage we need to have done. We had some RBI opportunities that just never came to fruition." Robert Stephenson walked a career-high seven batters during his 4 1/3 innings. He allowed three earned runs, the last two of which came after Drew Storen entered for him in the fifth, then walked Dietrich with the bases full and yielded a sacrifice fly to Tyler Moore. Junichi Tazawa allowed an eighth-inning RBI single to Scooter Gennett, but Marlins closer AJ Ramos came on for four outs to earn his 20th save. "We've been talking about it for a while, actually from Spring Training, that we would use [Ramos] like that," Mattingly said. "I felt confident with [Tazawa], but I felt like I know AJ was strong and he bounces back." MOMENTS THAT MATTERED Dietrich drives 'em in: A night after notching a career-high five RBIs in Miami's win over the Rangers, Dietrich didn't waste time driving in more. The second baseman launched a solo shot in the fourth off Stephenson to give Miami a 1-0 lead. His fifth long ball of the season traveled a projected 397 feet and had an exit velocity of 104 mph per Statcast. After Dietrich's RBI walk in the fifth, he blooped a single to score Christian Yelich and tack on Miami's fourth and final run. "We got enough to win tonight and that's all that matters," Dietrich said. "It was a good night. Long night yesterday, so to come out there and win a ballgame is a good way to start a homestand." Tagged out: With a chance to tie the game at one, Reds third base coach Billy Hatcher waved Joey Votto around third on Adam Duvall's two-out double in the fifth. Marlins left fielder Marcell Ozuna fished it out of the corner and fired to Miguel Rojas, who skipped a one-hopper home to nab Votto. Not known as a speedster by any means -- and rated by Statcast as being tied for the slowest sprint speed on the Reds -- Votto tossed his helmet in frustration after the tag. "A lot of things have to happen and obviously it's a bang-bang [play] at the plate," Mattingly said. "When you talk about a game of inches, that's where if the ball bounces just a little bit, or Ozuna's throw takes Miggy off where he can't stay on balance and get rid of the ball quickly, a lot of things have to happen positively and they all do on that play." 3 Reds: Sal Romano (2-2, 5.50 ERA) will face the Marlins in consecutive starts when he pitches against Miami at 7:10 p.m. ET on Friday. Romano pitched very well in a 6-3 victory on Sunday with six innings, one earned run, three hits, one walk and seven strikeouts. Marlins: Vance Worley (0-2, 6.37) makes his first start since June 9 in place of the recently optioned Tom Koehler, as the Reds and Marlins continue the series. Peraza struggling as Cozart's fill-in at SS By Mark Sheldon / July 27th, COMMENTS MIAMI -- With Zack Cozart out of the starting lineup for a third consecutive game on Thursday against the Marlins, Jose Peraza was given another opportunity to get playing time back after he was benched last week in favor of Scooter Gennett at second base. Originally a shortstop, Peraza has played there plenty this season when Cozart was out periodically with a sore right quadriceps. But he didn't fare well during Wednesday's 9-5 loss to the Yankees. "It was a tough day," Peraza said via translator Julio Morillo on Thursday. "Every player has a tough day and for me, it was yesterday. I felt kind of weird yesterday. I don't know if it was the field itself; I don't really know. I'm just going to work hard and do my job at shortstop." Peraza missed a Clint Frazier grounder to the left side that could have prevented a run if stopped. In the sixth inning, Peraza made a throwing error that led to a run and also pulled his foot off of second base during a force play. There was no optimism lost for Peraza, however. "I'm going to just try and do my job at shortstop like when I do it at second base," he said. "Right now, I feel comfortable there. I know I can I play shortstop." Peraza, who came into Thursday 0-for-9 on the road trip and batting.161 since the All-Star break, lost his starting spot to the betterhitting Gennett last week. Entering the day, Peraza was batting.246/.274/.319 with four homers and 26 RBIs in 95 games. As a rookie last season, he batted.324/.352/.411 with three homers in 72 games. "I feel fine. Scooter has been doing a great job. He has to play," Peraza said. "Right now, I'm working hard in the cages, working on things. I know I'm going to be able to hit again like I did last year. I believe in myself and that I can do it." Cozart was on the field Thursday afternoon but did not take batting practice or grounders. He aggravated his quad trying to beat out a double play Tuesday as a pinch-hitter against the Yankees. It left him unable to score what would have been the tying run from first base on a two-out double to the wall in the eighth inning of the 4-2 loss. "He'll have to be active on the field and do all of that pregame stuff before he's considered a guy that would be in the lineup anytime soon," Reds manager Bryan Price said. "We're optimistic it will be a short stay out of the lineup. But until you see him on the field practicing, he's still at least a day away." Mark Sheldon has covered the Reds for MLB.com since 2006, and previously covered the Twins from Follow him on and Facebook and listen to his podcast. 4 Romano looking to build on best MLB start By Mark Sheldon / July 27th, COMMENTS In the second game of the four-game series between the Marlins and Reds, veteran Vance Worley will pitch for Miami against rookie Sal Romano. It's Worley's first opportunity to start since June 9 but he hasn't pitched more than five innings in any of his four starts while posting a 7.71 ERA in those games. He is starting in place of the recently optioned Tom Koehler and manager Don Mattingly said Thursday that Worley could stick in the rotation depending on how he pitches. Worley has been used out of the bullpen in July in long relief and has a 5.11 ERA in his last seven appearances (12 1/3 innings). Romano is coming off of the best outing in his four big league starts, against the Marlins on Sunday in Cincinnati. In a 6-3 victory, he pitched six innings with one earned run, three hits, one walk and seven strikeouts. Three things to know about this game After pitching almost exclusively with his fastball and slider in his first three MLB starts, Romano sprinkled in eight changeups Sunday against the Marlins, seven of which went to left-handed batters. According to Statcast, Romano averaged 89.6 mph with the pitch and used it to notch two called strikes, a swinging strike and a flyout. The Marlins have been dealt their fair share of injuries lately. Three regular infielders -- first baseman Justin Bour (right oblique strain), shortstop JT Riddle (left shoulder tendinitis) and third baseman Martin Prado (right knee strain) -- and key reliever Kyle Barraclough are on the 10-day DL. None of them are expected to play against the Reds this series. Reds closer and Cuba native Raisel Iglesias makes his offseason home in Miami. CINCINNATI ENQUIRER Reds Recap: Stephenson has no control in loss to Marlins Zach Buchanan, zbuchanan@enquirer.com Published 10:31 p.m. ET July 27, 2017 Updated 6:17 a.m. ET July 28, 2017 MIAMI The Cincinnati Reds continued their second-half slide, falling 4-1 to the Miami Marlins on Thursday at Marlins Park. Here are the main storylines. Robert Stephenson could not throw strikes. The right-hander entered the game after having largely avoided walking batters in his first start back in the majors, but that success went out the window quickly in Miami. Stephenson walked his first two batters of the game, and wound up issuing a career-worst seven free passes in 4 1/3 innings. The first two innings, Stephenson seemed to be missing in the same spot. Every fastball he threw veered up and to his arm side, resulting in a pair of walks in each of the first two innings. He walked a fifth batter in the third, but finished three innings without allowing a run. Derek Dietrich clubbed a solo homer off Stephenson in the fourth, the only inning the righty didn t walk a batter. The fifth began with two more walks, and a one-out infield single loaded the bases. That spelled the end of Stephenson s day, although reliever Drew Storen allowed two more of Stephenson s runs to score including one on a bases-loaded walk before the inning ended. Stephenson allowed four hits and struck out two. The Reds ran into an out trying to get on the board. The Reds got a runner on second in each of the first, second and third innings, but couldn t score. They tried to force the issue in the fifth, to no avail. With two outs, Joey Votto was grazed by a pitch and took first base. Adam Duvall then followed with a double down the left-field line. As the ball rolled into the corner and Marcell Ozuna chased after it, Votto rounded second. As Ozuna picked up the ball, Votto had yet to reach third. Reds third-base coach Billy Hatcher waved him home nonetheless, despite Votto being the slowest runner on the team, according to Statcast. Ozuna hit his relay man in shortstop Miguel Rojas, who fired home. Votto was out by a step, and the inning was over.

5 Tucker Barnhart won his showdown with Dee Gordon. Barnhart entered the day having thrown out 45 percent of attempted basestealers, the best rate of any National League catcher. He only upped his rate against the Marlins, despite speedster Dee Gordon trying for second three times. Barnhart nailed Gordon on two of those three attempts in the first and the sixth. Gordon successfully took second in the fourth, and Christian Yelich stole second in the seventh on a ball that Barnhart had to block in the dirt. One step forward, seven walks back for Stephenson Zach Buchanan, zbuchanan@enquirer.com Published 11:50 p.m. ET July 27, 2017 Updated 6:16 a.m. ET July 28, 2017 MIAMI All Robert Stephenson wanted Thursday was to throw his fastball for strikes. But each time he tried, it seemed like the pitch had a mind of its own. It would hiss out of his hand and veer off course, causing right-handed batters to lean backward in self-preservation. Pfffffffffffft! Ball, up and in. Pfffffffffffft! Ball, up and in. The young Cincinnati Reds right-hander knew what was wrong. He was being overaggressive, dropping his back leg as he loaded and opening up his front side too early. He d spent the last month-plus in the minors working to iron out that flaw, posting impressive strikeout-to-walk numbers and earning a return trip to the majors. He d given up runs in his first start back, but had limited walks. Now suddenly, Stephenson couldn t make the adjustment he knew was required. So he battled, throwing more offspeed and breaking pitches than he d planned, for 4 1/3 innings. He allowed three runs, but also a far-more-troubling seven walks, a careerworst. The Reds lost 4-1 to the Miami Marlins at Marlins Park. In my bullpen, I felt like I did really well working on exactly what I wanted to work on. Then when I got into the game today, I just completely abandoned it, Stephenson said. Not that I meant to, but that s what happened out there. It was pretty much the opposite of what I ve been working on. Command long has been the issue with Stephenson. In his first taste of the majors last season, he walked 4.6 batters per nine innings. Even with a command performance, so to speak, last Saturday in his first start of 2017, he entered Thursday s game having walked 5.4 per nine this season. Against the Marlins, the fastball was the only issue. Stephenson threw 48 of them, but only 22 went for strikes. His misses often missed wildly, and not once did a Miami batter swing at a fastball and whiff. He did get nine called strikes on the pitch, but that s a less impressive feat when hitters have been trained to not waste a swing on it. You don t have to hit a gnat s backside to have command, Reds manager Bryan Price said. But be down in the zone and be able to cover the bottom part of the strike zone when you need to be down there. That s been a tough challenge for Robert here for a bit. Price could be forgiven if he buried his head in his hands after Stephenson s first two batters, who drew back-to-back walks on nine combined pitches. But despite the righty s issues, Stephenson still managed to get outs. Recognizing that Stephenson wasn t going to stumble across his lost command, catcher Tucker Barnhart stopped calling for the fastball as much. The pair worked in more split-fingered change-ups and more sliders, the latter a pitch Stephenson added only this spring. A few curveballs were included for good measure. My offspeed stuff was pretty much a life-saver, Stephenson said. Stephenson was better able to place those pitches where he wanted. Despite walking two batters in each of the first two innings, he escaped without allowing a run. He got out of the third after allowing his first hit and another walk. His first run scored on a solo homer by Derek Dietrich to start the fourth. The walks ran up his pitch count, but didn t actually translate into runs until the fifth. Again, Stephenson started with consecutive free passes. A one-out infield hit loaded the bases, and Price removed his young starter. Reliever Drew Storen allowed two of Stephenson s runs to score before the inning ended. The Reds also had offensive issues Thursday night, but the goal of the second half of the 2017 is pitcher development. With Stephenson, it continues to be a frustrating process.

6 The kid wants nothing more to do than hit his spot, Price said. This isn t happening because he doesn t believe he can get hitters out. We just haven t been able to crack the code on the delivery that s going to provide the consistent quality strike. Joey Votto helps Chase Headley with 1B transition Zach Buchanan, zbuchanan@enquirer.com Published 6:40 p.m. ET July 27, 2017 Updated 6:47 p.m. ET July 27, 2017 MIAMI First base can be baseball s water cooler. It s not uncommon for a batter and a first baseman to have a little chat. But the talk between Joey Votto and Chase Headley on Wednesday at Yankee Stadium looked less like idle conversation and more like a coaching session. Headley had just moved to the position from third after the New York Yankees acquired Todd Frazier last week. So when Votto reached, the Cincinnati Reds first baseman offered Headley some tips between pitches. It was unsolicited advice, and nobody likes unsolicited advice, Votto said Thursday before the Reds took on the Miami Marlins. But he ended up being good enough to take it in. He seemed to really appreciate it. Votto said he talked to Headley mostly about footwork and where your mind needs to be once you catch the ball. That wisdom is hard-won for Votto, who has had to work to improve at a position for which he admits he lacks a natural ability. The 33-year-old focused more this offseason and spring on improving his defense after a poor year in the field in Last year, he posted the worst defensive metrics of his career, with an Ultimate Zone Rating of minus-7 runs and a Defensive Runs Saved of minus-14. This year, he is among the league leaders for first basemen in both categories. First base may be one of the easier positions on the diamond, but Votto knows it s not easy. It s my position, but I genuinely don t feel like a winning team has a first baseman that s clanking balls all over the place, Votto said. The confidence level of your infield goes down. It s a challenging position at the highest level. I feel like I have to be on top of every single play. Zack Cozart sits again as a possibly quiet trade deadline looms Zach Buchanan, zbuchanan@enquirer.com Published 6:17 p.m. ET July 27, 2017 Updated 6:29 p.m. ET July 27, 2017 MIAMI For the third day in a row, with the trade deadline just four days away, the Cincinnati Reds most obvious trade chip was not in the lineup. On Tuesday against the New York Yankees, shortstop Zack Cozart received a planned day off as part of the Reds maintenance plan to address his nagging quad injury. Late in the game, he pinch-hit and aggravated the quad trying to beat out a double play. Things got worse when he went first-to-third, and he was then pulled for a pinch-runner. In both Wednesday s series finale in New York and Thursday s series opener against the Miami Marlins at Marlins Park, the 31- year-old was not in good enough shape to return to the starting lineup. Cozart was receiving treatment for most of the period when the clubhouse was open to reporters before the game Thursday, and did not take grounders or hit during batting practice. We re optimistic it ll be a short stay out of the lineup, manager Bryan Price said, but until you see him on the field practicing, we re still at least a day away. Cozart s injury situation could put a damper on any plans the Reds had for moving him at the deadline. The shortstop is set to hit free agency after this season and is enjoying a career year at the plate, posting a batting line of.317/.402/.568 with 12 home runs. But even before his quad issue resurfaced, potential suitors were few and far between. Teams with obvious injury-related shortstop holes the Arizona Diamondbacks, Washington Nationals and Houston Astros have shown no real interest. Teams with needs at third and second and even those looking for a bench bat have sniffed around, but that doesn t suggest they d give up much to get Cozart. Now that Cozart is in the gray area between playing and being on the disabled list, it s hard for teams to get a good feel for how healthy a version of Cozart they d be receiving. This is a situation Zach s been dealing with for the better part of this year, said general manager Dick Williams. Now that the information s out there, teams are aware of it. I think teams are aware of the information and they re able to factor into their decisions. I don t see much changing over the next few days, based on his injury.

7 Injuries to Cozart and veteran right-hander Scott Feldman could mean a quiet trade deadline for the Reds. Feldman had been receiving the most interest from teams cheap, reliable starters are always en vogue at the deadline until a knee injury landed him on the disabled list last week. Feldman won t be able to come off the disabled list until after the deadline, and won t even throw his first bullpen session until the day before. That could set up the Reds for more trade action in August than before July 31. After the deadline, players must clear waivers before they can be traded to any team interested. If they are claimed, only the claiming team can work out a deal with the Reds. Reliever trade assets like Drew Storen and Tony Cingrani are more likely to be moved that way than before the deadline. If the Reds don t make a big move at the deadline, it ll be a different feel from the past couple of rebuilding years. Last year, the Reds moved right fielder Jay Bruce. At the 2015 deadline, they traded starters Johnny Cueto and Mike Leake. We ve said goodbye at this time of year to some really good, established major-league players, Price said. It would be tough to see another one go, certainly someone as well-liked as Zack. But it is the nature of the business. DAYTON DAILY NEWS Dragons Siri extends historic hit streak Mike Hartsock WHIO TV 11:16 p.m Thursday, July 27, 2017 Dayton Dragons outfielder Jose Siri did again up in Lansing on Thursday night. A fourth-inning single to left field extended his hitting streak to 32 games, equaling the second longest streak in Midwest League history. The longest streak in league history is 35 games, set in Siri grounded out to lead off the game, then hit a sinking line drive that was caught in the second inning. He singled sharply with two outs in the fourth, but he didn t stay at first for long as Shane Madirosian was thrown out at third to end the inning. Siri was intentionally walked in the sixth, then grounded out to lead off the Dragons eighth. Dayton dropped an 8-7 decision to the Lugnuts. Dayton and Lansing meet again Friday night in Lansing.
