Cincinnati Reds Press Clippings May 14, 2017 THIS DAY IN REDS HISTORY 1886-Player-manager of the Browns, Charles Comiskey, prevents a double play by running full force into Reds second baseman, Bid McPhee, enabling the Browns to win, 2-1. Reds fans are irate, but the American Association umpires allow the play MLB.COM Bonilla goes distance in impressive outing In first Major League start since 2014, right-hander notches first hit, gives bullpen a breather By Chris Biderman / Special to MLB.com May 13th, COMMENTS SAN FRANCISCO -- The Reds sorely needed starter Lisalverto Bonilla to eat up innings Saturday after their 17-inning affair on Friday night, when manager Bryan Price used six of his eight relievers in the loss to the Giants. Bonilla, who hadn't made a Major League start since 2014 with the Rangers, gave the bullpen a welcomed spell, throwing all eight innings in the 3-1 loss and allowing three runs on six hits. He had five strikeouts on 98 pitches. It was an encouraging showing for the 26-year-old right-hander, who compiled a 5.61 ERA in five starts with Triple-A Louisville before getting his shot in Cincinnati's maligned starting rotation. "Bonilla, beyond a couple of solo homers, really was spectacular," Price said. "Strikes with three pitches, kept them off-balance with the changeup, did the things that allowed him to stay in the game for eight innings. It was step up in every way. We got one pitcher warm [in the bullpen] that was asked, he got up and got loose, and that was it. So we should at least be a lot closer to having good health in that bullpen by this time tomorrow." Bonilla took the place of Rookie Davis, who was sent down earlier this week to address command issues while Reds starters entered the weekend with the worst ERA in the National League. In the fourth inning, Bonilla also got his first Major League hit, a single to right field. On the mound, Bonilla spread out his mistakes, but the Giants were able to capitalize on them. San Francisco's first two runs came via solo homers from Brandon Belt and Justin Ruggiano, though it managed just three hits across Bonilla's economical first six innings, in which he threw just 62 pitches. In the seventh inning, Bonilla allowed a leadoff single to Michael Morse, who was replaced by pinch-runner Gorkys Hernandez, who stole second and later scored on a two-out grounder from Kelby Tomlinson that wasn't fielded cleanly by shortstop Jose Peraza. Tomlinson beat the throw by a half-step, and the play was ruled an infield single. "He was great, he did all we could have asked for, and probably even more," catcher Devin Mesoraco said. "He had a really good changeup going, it was good for righties and lefties. They never really seemed to make an adjustment on it.... It was a darn impressive start for him." Cincinnati's offense struggled to get runners home, leaving nine men on base against Matt Moore over the first six frames, preventing Bonilla from getting his first win since Sept. 24, 2014, when he was a late-season addition to Texas' rotation. The Reds left 11 runners on and outhit the Giants eight to six. Bonilla notched his first loss of the season, but he also lowered his ERA to He allowed four earned runs in a five-inning relief appearance against the Cubs in April. 2 Efforts from Schebler, Bonilla fall short in loss By Michael Wagaman and Chris Biderman / Special to MLB.com May 13th, COMMENTS SAN FRANCISCO -- Matt Moore pitched into the eighth inning to give San Francisco's weary bullpen a much-needed rest, Brandon Belt homered for the second time in three days and the Giants held on to beat the Reds, 3-1, on Saturday at AT&T Park in just 2 hours, 33 minutes. One day after outlasting the Reds in 17 innings (and 5 hours, 28 minutes) while using all seven relievers, the Giants got a big outing from Moore (2-4), who earned a win for the first time since April 10. The left-hander pitched out of multiple jams early, gave up one run over 7 1/3 innings, walked three and struck out seven while throwing a season-high 119 pitches. "It was really needed for him to get us deep in the game," Giants manager Bruce Bochy said. "He really gave us a little more than I thought, to be honest. He pitched his way into some jams, but in traffic, he found a way to make pitches." San Francisco needed it on a day when Cincinnati right-hander Lisalverto Bonilla was almost as sharp in his first start since late in the 2014 season. Bonilla allowed three runs on six hits in eight innings and struck out five. He also collected his first Major League hit with a single in the fourth. Justin Ruggiano also homered for the Giants, who played without regulars Buster Posey, Hunter Pence and Eduardo Nunez. Derek Law retired three batters for his third save. The Reds left 11 runners on base, and they outhit the Giants eight to six. "Neither team came up with the hit that really could have created the separation," Reds manager Bryan Price said. "I think we had a bigger opportunity to blow that game open, more so than they did. We had more baserunners, more opportunity, we just weren't able to deliver the big hit." Scott Schebler homered for the Reds, his 10th of the season. MOMENTS THAT MATTERED Coming up empty: The Reds had a chance to put some pressure on the Giants late after Schebler's one-out double in the eighth. As was the case on Friday with runners on base, Cincinnati was again unable to bring Schebler home. San Francisco reliever Hunter Strickland got Patrick Kivlehan to pop out, and after balking Schebler to third, the right-hander retired Devin Mesoraco on a groundout. Clutch hit from the kid: The Giants have had trouble scoring this season, let alone getting some insurance runs, which is why Kelby Tomlinson's two-out, RBI infield single in the seventh was critical. Tomlinson was hitless in his previous eight at-bats before hitting a grounder to shortstop Jose Peraza. The ball hit off the heel of Peraza's glove, allowing Tomlinson to beat the throw by a half step while pinch-runner Gorkys Hernandez scored from third. "We're still not putting up big numbers, but we made the most of our hits," Bochy said. "It was good to tack on that last one to give us a little margin of error." SOUND SMART WITH YOUR FRIENDS Belt's home run was the sixth of his career that landed in the waters of McCovey Cove, the third-most by a Giants player. Home run king Barry Bonds had 35 splash hits, and Pablo Sandoval had seven during his tenure. OVERTURNED CALL San Francisco's Joe Panik was thrown out trying to steal second base in the eighth inning for what would have been the third out. Bochy challenged the call and after a review that lasted 1:44 minutes, the play was overturned and Panik went back to second. It's the seventh successful challenge in 11 attempts by the Giants this season. WHAT'S NEXT Reds: The Reds will send right hander Tim Adleman (2-1, 4.44 ERA) to the hill in Sunday's finale at 4:05 ET to make his first career start against San Francisco on MLB.TV. The 29-year-old is coming off consecutive wins against the Pirates and Yankees, combining to allow five earned runs in 11 innings with 11 strikeouts.

Giants: Right-hander Jeff Samardzija (0-4, 5.44 ERA) faces the Reds for the 26th time in his career in the series finale Sunday at 1:05 p.m. PT on MLB.TV. Samardzija has had eight strikeouts or more in four of his seven starts, but his five losses this season are tied for the most in MLB. Hamilton resting with minor calf tightness Bailey throws 48-pitch bullpen session By Chris Biderman / Special to MLB.com May 13th, COMMENTS SAN FRANCISCO -- Billy Hamilton's calf injury from Friday's 17-inning, 3-2 loss to the Giants is considered minor, Reds manager Bryan Price said Saturday. "He's got just a little bit of a calf tightness. I don't think it's a huge issue," said Price. "I had him penciled in for a day off [Saturday] anyway so we could get [Patrick] Kivlehan in the ballgame. It coincides with a day where he could probably use a little bit of a blow." Hamilton had his season-high eight-game hitting streak snapped with an 0-for-7 night at the plate. He hit.389 during the streak and scored runs in 11 straight appearances before Friday. "He came in here today saying he was ready to play, which I appreciate. But today was a scheduled day off for him anyway. So I'm going to give him some rest," said Price. Saturday was Kivlehan's fifth start of the season, with his most recent one coming against the Giants on May 6, when he logged a career-best four hits, including his only home run of Shortstop Zack Cozart was also out of the starting lineup on Saturday after his eight-game hitting streak was snapped the night before. He was replaced by Arismendy Alcantara, who had hits in seven straight plate appearances before striking out as a pinchhitter in the eighth inning of Friday's loss. Worth noting Reds hurler Homer Bailey took another step in his rehab from surgery on Friday with a 48-pitch bullpen session. "It sounded like everything went well. Certainly, if he threw 48 pitches, it went pretty well," Price said. It was Bailey's longest session on a mound since he began his throwing program in March after the operation to remove bone spurs from his pitching elbow in February. The veteran is tentatively expected to return to the rotation at some point in June, and he will continue throwing in side sessions before a rehab assignment is determined later this month. Reds turn to Adleman in finale vs. Giants By Chris Biderman / Special to MLB.com May 13th, COMMENT On Mother's Day, the Giants will close the four-game set with the Reds with right-hander Jeff Samardzija (0-5, 5.44 ERA), while Cincinnati will counter with Tim Adleman (2-1, 4.44 ERA). Adleman, 29, has allowed three runs or fewer in four of his five starts, and he will face the Giants for the first time in his two-year big league career. Samardzija's five losses lead the Majors amid his second season with San Francisco. Samardzija is 2-5 with a 4.00 ERA for his career against the Reds after starting with the division-rival Chicago Cubs in He's allowed six or more earned runs in three road starts, but he has a 3.92 ERA at AT&T Park. Three things to know about this game

Adleman entered the Reds' rotation this past August in his first Major League season, finishing 4-4 in 13 starts. He began the year with Triple-A Louisville after going 2-1 with an ERA in Spring Training before getting recalled April 16 when Brandon Finnegan went on the disabled list with a shoulder injury. Samardzija, 32, has just 10 walks this season. His walk rate of 1.94 per nine innings is the second best of his 10-year career and ranks eighth in the National League. Samardzija faced the Reds once in 2016, allowing one run on three hits over eight innings with nine strikeouts May 3. CINCINNATI ENQUIRER Lisalverto Bonilla impresses, offense struggles in Cincinnati Reds' loss to San Francisco Giants C. Trent Rosecrans, crosecrans@enquirer.com Published 6:45 p.m. ET May 13, 2017 Updated 14 hours ago SAN FRANCISCO Bryan Price s pregame hopes for Lisalverto Bonilla s first start with the Reds were modest after Friday night s 17-inning marathon, Price said before Saturday s game he was hoping to get six innings out of the right-hander. Bonilla needed just 62 pitches to get through six innings and finished with 98 pitches in a complete-game 3-1 loss to the Giants. More than I can probably explain in words, Price said when asked what Bonilla s performance meant to the team. That was a step-up performance. Their guy did a great job too, Matt Moore, pitching into the eighth. Bonilla, beyond a couple of solo homers really, was spectacular. (He threw) strikes with three pitches, kept them off-balance with the changeup, did the things that allowed him to stay int he game for eight innings. It was step-up in every way. The loss shouldn t overshadow the performance Bonilla turned in. The Reds have been struggling to find starters who can deliver reliable innings all season long. Bonilla was the ninth different Reds pitcher to start a game for the Reds in their first 36 games of the season. He became only the second Reds starter this season to see the eighth inning, much less finish it. The only other Reds pitcher to pitch at least eight was Scott Feldman, who threw a shutout against the Giants last Sunday. The only bullpen action came in the top of the eighth when Bonilla s spot in the order was coming up and Barrett Astin needed to be ready in case Price needed to hit for Bonilla with a runner on base. He did not. Bonilla allowed three runs on eight hits with two walks and five strikeouts. I was focused on the command of my pitches, said Bonilla afterward, according to interpreter Julio Morillo. I made two mistakes, but it happens. Moore went 7 ⅓ innings, allowing only one run, a Scott Schebler solo run in the sixth. Moore, an All-Star in 2013, gave up seven hits, but like the night before, the Reds never seemed to get the big hit against him. Moore was replaced with one out in the eighth after Schebler doubled. Giants manager Bruce Bochy brought in right-hander Hunter Strickland, who pitched in both of the previous two games of the series. Despite a balk, Strickland got Patrick Kivelehan to pop up and Devin Mesoraco to ground out to get out of trouble. The Reds left a total of 10 players on base throughout the game, including seven in the first three innings. We just couldn't seem to come through and get that big hit, Mesoraco said. Give credit to their guys. They made some pitches when they had to. They were able to get in and out of trouble. It would have been nice to get him a win, but he gave us all we could have asked for. Bonilla gave up a solo home run to Brandon Belt in the first. It was the third time in as many games in this series that the Giants hit a solo homer in the opening frame and the second from Belt. Belt s blast landed in McCovey cove beyond the wall in right field. With two outs in the second, Bonilla allowed another solo homer, a 420-foot shot from Giants right fielder Justin Ruggiano. But after a leadoff single by Denard Span in the third, Bonilla retired the next 11 batters he faced (not including doubling up Span to end the third) before Michael Morse led off the seventh with a single.

The Giants added a run in the inning after pinch-runner Gorkys Hernandez stole second and then went to third on Nick Hundley s groundout. Giants third baseman Kelby Tomlinson then hit a grounder to short that was bobbled by Jose Peraza, playing in the place of Zack Cozart. Peraza recovered quickly, but not quickly enough to get Tomlinson at first, giving the Giants a 3-1 lead. He had a really good changeup going and it was good for righties and lefties. They never seemed to make an adjustment on it, Mesoraco said. He kept throwing that thing in there and getting some easy outs, getting some outs early in the count and he was able to keep it down in the zone. It was a darn impressive start for him. Bonilla, 26, was claimed off of waivers from the Pirates on Feb. 13, the day pitchers and catchers reported to spring training. He started the season in Louisville, going 2-2 with a 5.61 ERA. The Reds called him up on April 18 and he made one appearance, going five innings in relief of Cody Reed on April 22 against the Cubs. It was his first big-league appearance since 2014 when made three starts and three relief appearances for the Rangers in September of that season. Bonilla gave up four runs in his five-inning stint against Chicago, but just three hits. He struck out six and walked three in that appearance. He was sent back to Louisville after that game and made three more starts there. The Reds called Bonilla up earlier this week when Rookie Davis was demoted. Price said Bonilla would get a shot to stick in the rotation and has him penciled in to start Thursday in Chicago. After Saturday s performance, it s probably safe to put that in ink. Reds' Hamilton, Cozart get days off after 17-inning marathon C. Trent Rosecrans, crosecrans@enquirer.com 3:32 p.m. ET May 13, 2017 SAN FRANCISCO Billy Hamilton was scheduled to have a day off on Saturday anyway, but after a 17 inning game that lasted into Saturday morning, it was a welcome change. Hamilton had a sore calf near the end of a 3-2 Reds loss in a game that began Friday night. At one point, Reds manager Bryan Price said, he had been considering using one of his available pitchers Raisel Iglesias or Austin Brice in the field if Hamilton couldn t continue. Before Saturday s scheduled game against the Giants, Hamilton said he was feeling OK. He told Price when he arrived at the stadium that he was available if his manager needed him. Friday night s game was the first time in 12 games that Hamilton didn t score a run and he also had an eight-game hitting streak snapped, going 0 for 7 with a walk. Scott Schebler moved from right field to center field for Saturday s game and Patrick Kivlehan got the start in right field. Jose Peraza, who didn t start Friday s game, was back in at second base. Zack Cozart got a day off, with Arismendy Alcantara starting at shortstop. The Giants used every member of their bullpen in the game, while Price held back Iglesias and Astin. Drew Storen and Wandy Peralta appeared in each of the first two games in the series against the Giants. Blake Wood and Austin Brice pitched two innings on Friday. Friday s results will certainly play into how Price planned to use his bullpen on Saturday, he said. The thing you don't want to have happen is where you're using pitchers you really don't want to use simply to finish a game, especially if it's a game where you're behind, Price said. Injury updates Homer Bailey (elbow) threw a 48-pitch bullpen in Goodyear, Ariz., on Friday and Price said the reports were positive. It sounded like everything went well, certainly if he threw 48 pitches, it went pretty well, Price said. Right-hander Nefi Ogando (hand) has pitched twice in Goodyear and will likely start a rehab assignment elsewhere this week. Right-hander Anthony DeSclafnai (elbow) will be reexamined in Cincinnati later this week. Price said he s hoping DeSclafani can begin a throwing program after that and may travel with the team on the next road trip. Left-hander Brandon Finnegan (shoulder) is continuing his throwing program. He has not thrown off a mound yet, but is getting closer, Price said.

Umpire crew changes Umpire Tony Randazzo left Friday night s game following the 13th inning. Randazzo was hit in the mask in the fifth inning of the game but stayed in the game through the 13th. Clint Fagan, who was the umpire at second base, moved behind the plate for the rest of the game. Ryan Blakney joined the umpiring crew on Saturday at third base. Mark Wegner will join the crew for Sunday s game, replacing Blakney. Finally healthy, Cincinnati Reds prospect Tyler Stephenson producing Zach Buchanan, zbuchanan@enquirer.com 3:03 p.m. ET May 13, 2017 DAYTON The only sign that Tyler Stephenson ever had anything wrong with his wrist comes in the form of four small little dots on the back of his left hand. They re scars left from the wrist surgery he had last August. I say I got bit by a rattlesnake, Stephenson joked. Otherwise, Stephenson looks exactly like the player the Cincinnati Reds hoped he d be when they selected him out of a Georgia high school with the 11th overall pick in the 2015 draft. He began Thursday hitting.287/.397/.446. He s played in 28 of 33 games for Low-A Dayton, including making 19 starts behind the plate. It s quite the change of circumstances for the 20-year-old, if not a change of scenery. He also was a young A-ball catcher with the Dragons a year ago, in what was supposed to be his first full professional season. But persistent injury troubles sapped him of any chance to play regularly, limiting him to just 39 games. In particular, the wrist injury affected his every swing, and he managed a measly batting line of.216/.278/.324. It wore him down physically. It wore him down mentally. It was hard, Stephenson said. It plays a big mental role, because I m sitting there trying to hit. I ve already got enough to worry about with runners on base and a guy throwing a 95 mile-per-hour fastball. And I m sitting there worrying about how I ve got to do something with my swing, or it s just going to hurt. With a healthy wrist, Stephenson is physically stronger now. At 6-foot-4 and 225 pounds, it d be difficult to be seen as weak. But more importantly, he s better prepared mentally for the challenges of pro baseball. Perhaps compounded by his injury struggles and fitful playing opportunities last year, Stephenson had trouble getting out of his own head. Behind the plate, the game sped up on him. In his at-bats, he overcomplicated things. The time on the shelf in 2016 plus an overlapping rehab outing in Arizona with Triple-A outfielder Jesse Winker helped Stephenson wrap his head around the demands of playing at this level. He s simplified his approach at the plate, looking only for his pitch. Behind it, he s impressed Dayton manager Luis Bolivar and Reds farm director Jeff Graupe with his handling of the pitching staff. It s a lot like a kid going to college and getting a redshirt year, Graupe said. He s one year more mature, and I think it s showing. Stephenson said he thinks his framing has improved greatly from a year ago, although Graupe prefers the term receiving. It s improvement that comes only from repetition, something his body denied him last season. For such a large person, Stephenson is surprisingly smooth as a catcher. He gets into a low crouch, and both legs would almost sit in each batter s box if he straddled the plate. When he catches a pitch, he does so almost casually and without obvious effort. He s really quiet back there, Graupe said. That s what I d say. He s not jabbing, he s not spastic and all over the place. Right now, Stephenson is in a timeshare with fellow catcher Cassidy Brown, who was drafted in the 12th round out of Loyola Marymount last year. When he s not catching, Stephenson usually serves as the designated hitter. That type of workload is likely to continue. Stephenson could theoretically play himself to another level by season s end, but it s not a high priority for the Reds to jump him a level. He s still more than a year younger than the average Low-A player.

The focus is instead on letting Stephenson experience his first truly full season as a baseball player. He s had the mental dry run, and has lent his experience to fellow Georgia high school draft pick Taylor Trammell, with whom he shares a host family. Now comes the time to perform. As much as it was kind of a mess last year, I m kind of glad it happened, Stephenson said. It did help me a lot this year just on the mental side of all this, to kind of ignore everything and go out and have fun. Doc: Forget Statcast, give me personality Paul Daugherty, pdaugherty@enquirer.com 2:45 p.m. ET May 13, 2017 In a small corner of the big scoreboard at Great American Small Park, a space is reserved for info provided by Statcast, Baseball s know-it-all source for everything mystical/statistical. A state-of-the-art tracking technology, capable of measuring previously unquantifiable aspects of the game," is how MLB describes it. That s fantastic. I guess. Statcast can be interesting. Fascinating, even. It s also part of Baseball s problem. At GASP, if Joey Votto jerks one into the moon deck in right and you want to know how fast the ball traveled from his bat to the seats, Statcast will tell you. Exit Velocity, it s called. Statcast also provides Average Gen Velocity, Perceived Velocity, Launch Angle and Vector. The Reds could do their fans a public service by passing out slide rules and glossaries before all home games. That s not the bigger problem. This is: There is no context. We who have eyeballs know when a ball is hit hard its Exit Velocity is going to be fast. Compared to whom? To what? Faster than a speeding bullet? More powerful than a locomotive? Able to leap tall buildings in a single bound? Pitch speed (excuse me, velocity") we understand. Aroldis Chapman, fast. Bronson Arroyo, geologic. Exit Velocity, without context, is just a number. That s not the biggest problem. This is: Numbers aren t interesting. People are interesting. Part of the reason the NFL dwarfs MLB in popularity is because it is personalitydriven. The NFL focuses on drama, real and melo. Not data. People, not spread sheets and spray charts. Ah, but with more numbers comes greater understanding. Maybe that s true. So is this: The vast majority of baseball fans don t seek greater understanding. They re an older demographic that s been watching the game a very long time. They think they understand it already. Maybe the day will come when you re watching the Reds on TV and the announcers don t give you the Exit Velocity on an Adam Duvall home run and you have to resist the urge to throw your television out the window. That day isn t now. Fans love games for the passion the games provoke. The world s most popular game is soccer. It is not drowning in data. Football has its goofy numbers, most often seen at the NFL Combine. But sleeve lengths and cone-drill times are limited to draft season. Baseball s numbers cult has grown substantially in recent years. It s not mainstream, no matter how many numbers cultists tell you what they think you re missing. You simply don t care about Spin Rate, and you never will. The numbers people also can be a bit overbearing. We re right, you re stupid. Keith Law, noted numbers fanatic, has written a book titled Smart Baseball with a laboriously long subtitle that concludes The Right Way to Think About Baseball." After all these years, finally someone is going to tell us the right way to think. Thank God. No one would argue that the new numbers aren t important and even revolutionary. But to the teams themselves. Data-driven analysis of players is mainstream. Fan appreciation of it is not. Players find it helpful. A year ago, Kris Bryant fretted over his Launch Angle, believing if he flattened his swing, he d foul off fewer pitches that he could be hitting on a line somewhere. I think my launch angle this year has definitely gone down from last year," he explained. The Tampa Bay Rays judge the hitters in their system by Exit Velocity, not batting average. I m guessing Joey Votto sees Statcast data as a first edition of the King James version of the Bible. Understood. But for fans, it s all sausage-making. We don t especially care how a Votto liner ends up in the gap. Only that it does.

Here s slice of a story from sportsonearth, about surprising teams: Cincinnati's 5.2 runs scored per game ranks third in the Majors, second in the NL. Their defense ranks second in the Majors in park-adjusted defensive efficiency, and their bullpen ranks third in the NL with 9.8 strikeouts per nine innings. (The Reds offense) has been driven by hot starts from Zack Cozart (.350/.442/.580) and 25-year-old third baseman Eugenio Suarez (.316/.395/.579), neither of whom is likely to keep up that pace, particularly Cozart, who is hitting.423 on balls in play." The lineup, writes the author, has real power, but (is) unlikely to finish the season slugging.545 (Scott Schebler),.579 (Adam Duvall) and.623 (Joey Votto)." That stuff makes my brain hurt. I don t love baseball so my brain can hurt. Not everything needs to be known. Baseball s allure can t be data-defined. That s part of its greatness. Give me bigger personalities, not better numbers. Park-adjusted defensive efficiency? WCPO - Channel 9 Reds waste Lisalverto Bonilla's complete game six-hitter in 3-1 loss to Giants Hitters 0-for-8 with runners in scoring position 11:07 PM, May 13, :25 PM, May 13, 2017 SAN FRANCISCO Both starting pitchers did their jobs - resting their bullpens after a 17-inning marathon the night before. But Reds starter Lisalverto Bonilla didn't get enough support and lost a 3-1 duel with San Francisco's Matt Moore Saturday. Bonilla (0-1) pitched a six-hitter for his first career complete game but gave up two home runs to Brandon Belt and Justin Ruggiano. Scott Schebler homered off Moore (2-4) for the Reds' only run. The Reds were 0 for 8 with runners in scoring position. They were 0-for-10 Friday night. "The last couple of games we haven't been able to deliver those big hits," Reds manager Bryan Price said. "We had a lot of opportunities to end last night's game before the 17th. They pitched us tough just like we pitched them tough. Neither team could come up with the big hits to get that separation." The teams had a quick turnaround after Friday night's near double-header, with the Giants winning 3-2 on Buster Posey's gameending homer. Moore provided a lift with 7 1/3 innings of one-run ball. He allowed eight hits, struck out seven and walked three. "It was really needed for us for him to get us deep in the game," Giants manager Bruce Bochy said. "He really gave us a little more than I thought, to be honest." The last-place Giants (14-24) won consecutive games for just the second time this season. They have won three of four overall. "You've got to start somewhere," Bochy said. "We're trying to look at the positive signs here. It's good to get a couple in a row against a team that was really tough at their ballpark." The Giants jumped in front on Belt's long drive in the first inning. Belt's second homer of the series and No. 6 on the year sailed into the San Francisco Bay for his sixth career "splash hit." Ruggiano connected in the second for his first homer with the Giants. Schebler went deep in the sixth, Derek Law pitched a scoreless ninth inning for his third save in four tries.

16th annual Redlegs Run raises $125,000 for Reds Community Fund 9-year-old from Oxford wins women's 10K WCPO Staff 3:13 PM, May 13, :19 PM, May 13, 2017 CINCINNATI -- Ever had trouble keeping up with your kids? Try this: A 9-year-old girl from Oxford, Ohio won Saturday's Redlegs Run 10K in the women's division. That's not first in her age group, by the way. It's first overall. Lucia Rodbro finished in 42:46, while men's winner Robert Wiltshire finished with a time of 36:11. About 3,350 runners and walkers took part in the 16th annual event, which raised more than $125,000 for the Reds Community Fund. The fund supports youth baseball and softball programs throughout Greater Cincinnati. Another young competitor, 10-year-old Michael Stahr, was first in his 5K division and 20th overall. Heather Clark of Cincinnati won the women's 5K with a time of 20:02. Clark won last year's 5K run, too. The top 5K male finisher was Wesley Piper, of Athens, Ohio, with a time of 16:14. ASSOCIATED PRESS Belt, Ruggiano power Giants to 3-1 win over Reds By GIDEON RUBIN Today SAN FRANCISCO (AP) The San Francisco Giants needed a lengthy outing from Matt Moore, and he delivered. Moore pitched into the eighth inning, Brandon Belt and Justin Ruggiano homered and the Giants beat the Cincinnati Reds 3-1 on Saturday in a matchup of weary teams. San Francisco and Cincinnati had a quick turnaround after they played 17 innings Friday night, with the Giants winning 3-2 on Buster Posey s game-ending homer. Moore (2-4) provided a lift with 7 1/3 innings of one-run ball. He allowed eight hits, struck out seven and walked three. It was really needed for us for him to get us deep in the game, Giants manager Bruce Bochy said. He really gave us a little more than I thought, to be honest. The last-place Giants (14-24) won consecutive games for just the second time this season. They have won three of four overall. You ve got to start somewhere, Bochy said. We re trying to look at the positive signs here. It s good to get a couple in a row against a team that was really tough at their ballpark. Scott Schebler homered for Cincinnati, which swept a three-game series against San Francisco last weekend. Lisalverto Bonilla (0-1) pitched a six-hitter for his first career complete game. The Giants jumped in front on Belt s long drive in the first inning. Belt s second homer of the series and No. 6 on the year sailed into the San Francisco Bay for his sixth career splash hit. Ruggiano connected in the second for his first homer with the Giants. Schebler went deep in the sixth, but the Reds were 0 for 8 with runners in scoring position. The last couple of games we haven t been able to deliver those big hits, Reds manager Bryan Price said. We had a lot of opportunities to end last night s game before the 17th. They pitched us tough just like we pitched them tough. Neither team could come up with the big hits to get that create separation. Derek Law pitched a scoreless ninth inning for his third save in four tries. SURVIVOR

Instincts may have saved Moore when Joey Votto hit a line drive up the middle in the seventh inning. Either that or luck. The lefthander caught the ball for the second out. It was like, I threw the ball and now my hand is hurting. That was it, Moore said. It was a big out. With two strikes and him hitting the ball that hard I kind of got lucky there. TRAINER S ROOM Reds: OF Billy Hamilton was out of the lineup with calf tightness. Manager Bryan Price said he had already planned to rest the speedster.... Injured RHPs Homer Bailey (elbow), Nefi Ogando (right thumb) and Anthony DeSclafani (strained elbow) are all progressing, Price said. Bailey, who underwent surgery earlier this year, reported no pain after a 48-pitch bullpen Friday at the team s extended spring training facility in Arizona. Ogando will pitch next in the minors on a rehab assignment. DeSclafani will join the team Friday so coaches can monitor his progress. Giants: OF Hunter Pence (hamstring tightness) was out of the starting lineup for a second straight day. Pence appeared in Friday night s 17-inning game as a pinch hitter. UMPIRE SWITCH Umpire Ryan Blakney replaced Tony Randazzo, who left Friday s game in the 13th inning after being hit in the mask earlier in the game. UP NEXT Reds right-hander Tim Adleman (2-1, 4.44 ERA) will make his first career appearance against the Giants on Sunday. He is 2-0 with a 4.09 ERA in his last two starts. Right-hander Jeff Samardzija (0-5, 5.44 ERA) pitches for the Giants. He is 2-5 with a 4.00 ERA in 25 career appearances against Cincinnati. TRANSACTIONS 05/13/17 Toronto Blue Jays sent RHP Neil Ramirez outright to Buffalo Bisons. Oakland Athletics sent CF Jaff Decker outright to Nashville Sounds. Seattle Mariners signed free agent RHP Austin Kubitza to a minor league contract. Chicago Cubs optioned RHP Felix Pena to Iowa Cubs. Chicago Cubs selected the contract of 2B Ian Happ from Iowa Cubs. Miami Marlins activated RHP Edinson Volquez from the 10-day disabled list. Miami Marlins optioned RHP Brian Ellington to New Orleans Baby Cakes.
