We are often urged to bring friends and relatives to our sport. How many times have you tried? Are you tired of asking your friends to join-in and play the game? Try the opposite tack. Tell your friends you are really too busy to have a few beers with them, or whatever. If up against it you might have to say, Okay, okay, I m playing in a horseshoe league, having a ball but ya know, it takes a certain knack to pitch a ringer and I really don t know if you could do it. If and when you can, it may become a compulsive habit. Besides we already have 0 or thousand members nationally who are able to pitch a shoe, and it costs $ a year to belong. Of course they do keep weekly records of your tournament ringer percentage. You might have to travel a bit, 00 miles maybe, to tournaments. And there s a World Tournament every year but it costs $ to enter. Enter tournaments and you re in. Sure you get to pitch three days on some nice courts, yeah, indoors, sure AC, nice towns, all over, like St George Utah, Kitchner, Ontario, this year it s Buffalo, NY, but unless you win the whole thing, you are looking at only $00 for first place. I wonder if you re cut out for it. Whacha tink? Contact Jim Haupt with all changes and corrections to the schedule hauptjim@yahoo.com or -96-7

4 V O L U M E 8, I S S U E P a g e From your President With Glenn Bogenschneider HAPPY NEW YEAR! What an exciting time, a new year, 0: A new year to pitch in tournaments that you did NOT pitch in last year; A new year to sponsor a new member that you did NOT do last year; A new year to volunteer at the league, club or state level, that you did Not do last year. The Executive Board would like to welcome Ed Wheeler as our new nd VP and to thank Jimmy Paulson for his service these past years. I am happy to report that the Beloit and Deansville indoor tournaments are in full swing. If you have not pitched at these fine facilities, please plan a road trip and take in a tourney or two. Please review the enclosed outdoor tournament schedule and plan on attending as many tournaments as possible. Mark your calendars now! Until next time, there are many ways to assist the state chapter, but always remembers the p's: pitch, promote, and participate. Ringers to all!!! W I S C O N S I N H O R S E S H O E S Behind the Mask With NHPA Chaplain Ken Heinritz Hitting the jackpot is what many Americans dream of. The desire to strike er rich was not only a wish of gold diggers from years gone by. But in today s world wherever there is a dearth, one finds satisfaction when the need is replenished. We all know that the NHPA is experiencing a dearth in horseshoe pitchers. So when my pastor asked me if I would be willing to set up temporary horseshoe courts on the church property for the annual Church Picnic, I was rather elated. But would anyone come? Are people interested in horseshoes anymore? Other events like volleyball & golf, & other games would be going on at the same time. The plot set aside for horseshoe pitching could safely field courts. The announcement went out that the first contestants to sign up would participate in a doubles tournament. Now would anyone show? To my surprise, over 0 people came out to the horseshoe courts... men, women, elders, juniors. I couldn t believe it! It was like hitting the jackpot for me! Was this really happening? Teams were randomly picked out of a hat & since these were all newbie s & games were played only to points. People rotated in so everyone played. No natural ringers out of the bunch but good potential. Should we expect all these people soon be joining the NHPA? Don t hold your breath. But maybe we can corral some to pitch in the sanctioned Heinritz Homestead summer league. Or bring them to the Bring a Pal doubles event in Beloit. I may not have literally hit the jackpot, but I am enjoyed this little pot of gold that fell at my feet. Will 0 be the year that you enlist a friend to the NHPA? What is holding you back from asking? You have not, because you ask not James :

5 V O L U M E 8, I S S U E This is Your Life Anonymous Do what you love and do it often. If you don t like something, change it. If you don t like your job, quit. If you don t have enough time, quit watching TV. If you are looking for the love of your life, stop. They will be waiting for you when you start doing things you love. Stop analyzing, life is simple. All emotions are beautiful! When you eat, appreciate every last bit. Open your mind, heart and heart to people. We are united in our differences. Ask the next person what their passion is and share your interesting dream with them. Travel often; getting lost will help you find yourself. Some opportunities only come once, seize them. Life is about the people you meet and the things you create with them; so go out and start creating. Live your dream and share your passion. Life is short! Promoting our Game! Ken Heinritz was asked to set up a mini tournament at their Annual Church Picnic. These pictures show willing participants! Just another way to promote an awesome family sport and activity. With 6 sanctioned tournaments throughout the state it gave everyone the opportunity to take in a couple of tournaments. 0 shows an increase in tournaments to 6. Most of these tournaments are inhouse league tournaments that are being sanctioned, but we do have a new kid on the block. Holman WI is having their first sanctioned tournament in June and needs our support. Last year we did have a drawback, as less pitchers signed up for tournaments. Please look at your schedule and make a new years resolution to go to one additional tournament. Your support is needed to keep tournaments going. Mouse Beckius, president of the Beloit Horseshoe Club is carrying a bag of club receipts of the day, about $00 worth. It was not pretty, says the Mouse, it was scary-scary. The robber guy was scared too. His gun was a-wiggling as he promised, I will shoot you. The robber got the money but as Mouse says, He didn t smack me. This incident proves there is money in Horseshoes and perhaps Beloit should invest in a safe so the Mouse can quit looking over his shoulder.

12 V O L U M E 8, I S S U E P a g e Down n Back with Jim Haupt TRUST: to expect with confidence: That definition of trust explains why the horseshoe pitcher scoring the round readily accepts the call of his opponent. Trust is paramount. Trust rules. Horseshoes, unlike football, is not a game of, see what you can get away with, no dubious interference calls, no hidden holding. Horseshoes is like bowling, what you see is what you get. Our game is less demanding of judges. Self -scoring horseshoe games in Wisconsin involve trust. Your opponent marking the score trusts you. To insist the marker witness the lay of the pitch betrays the mutual trust. Additionally, it does display one of three possible situations: ) you, the caller, are sharp and can accurately judge the lay of the shoe, ) you call honestly most of the time, or, ) that you, the caller, may be capable of intentionally fudging the call. In the latter regard, if you can say, never, you have earned a quality respected by all pitchers, and other humans alike, TRUST. ********** Steve Mielke is the winner! Last issue s cartoon characters were correctly identified. Steve Wiegert was saying, We ve got all on! Answered by Carl Joppe, That s what I said, clucks. The clue is the clucks, Joppe s usual words for a ringer. Mielke wants his free subscription prize to go to a new pitcher. Will send, Steve, with your compliments. ********** A shout out goes to John Meyer, our R.D., whom has just produced our 0 schedule, the best ever, tournaments to date. ********** Bylaw change comments: From John Secord: The step-ladder playoff is in keeping with the NHPA. Should we have playoffs? Two sanction numbers for the State Tournament grants move-ups two participations to apply toward World entry requirement, costs us nothing. ********** From Tom Steinke: Re: Scorekeeping at State Tournament: Leave pay-out the same. Anyone who has run tournaments in the past knows getting scorekeepers was the worst thing about running the tournament. Now with computer scoring, they do two pits but its a lot easier to fill those chairs. Let s not go back in time. State Tournament, dropping rd place trophies etc.: If this is the thinking, there should be first place only. Why have a nd place award to a person for failure to win? I understand this would save a little money but the real problem is, why can t we get more people at the State Tournament? Maybe its lack of money prizes. Maybe it s the Labor Day weekend. Maybe people don t want to travel that far. State Tournament is the highlight of the year. We have to make it so that people don t want to miss it. One thing we do not want to do is to make it harder for the host clubs. Too many rules. Trying to tell the host club how to spend their money is no good either. We, as members, should make it so easy to run the State Tournament that more would want to run one. Without the bids for the tournament, where would we be? One last time, the State trophies are special and a trophy worth getting. I know some people have plenty of trophies but new pitchers and low classes may not have any. Pitcher Profile- Curt Bestul By, Jim Haupt Curt Bestul sends word, had it not rained last week in Eau Claire, he would have been ice fishing. Who is Curt Bestul you may ask? Bestul was an avid pitcher in 967 as he and Jerry Kamps wrested control of the State Tournament from the West Allis Fairgrounds and the then, Wisconsin State Horseshoe Pitchers Association. His reward was the initial formation of what we now know as the WHPA and 968 State Tournament in Eau Claire. He was named the WHPA, Man of the Century by this Newsletter in the year 000 for his commitment to game. In 98, he became the WHPA Men s champion. He was then a line crew foreman for the utility company spending every noon hour pitching shoes. In 98 he was inducted into the WHPA Hall of Fame along with his wife, Beatty. Two years later they brought the World Horseshoe Tournament to Eau Claire, Wisconsin. Additionally, in 00, he was inducted into Continued on Page.

13 V O L U M E 8, I S S U E Curt Bestul (Continued from Page ) the NHPA Hall of Fame. It all stemmed from his continuous activity and devotion to the game of horseshoes. Meanwhile he developed in his daughter, Debby, a four time Girl s World Champion pitcher. Over five years, 8 88, she was unseated just once, by Sandy McLaughlin who went on to win the Women's World Title the next year at age 7. We found in a magazine article published by the Wisconsin Historical Society that this state was a one time mecca for ski-jumping. In his youth, Bestul was one of them. Sending Curt the magazine prompted this discussion. Bestul no longer pitches horseshoes, does ice fishing occasionally and meets a few yumper guys for Tuesday lunch. Says he will show them the article of celebration of their former sport. Back in the day when live scorekeepers flourished, Eau Claire was paying cents/game. Bestul suggested, in print, that we could raise the score fee to $/ game. Preposterous! Of course, but ears perked, he made his point. The duty is to be shared and a $ fee would do it. Some years ago at some tournament, your agent was bumped from A class to B because Curt Bestul was a late entrant. Bestul may have never known but I was glad to step aside because of his stature and after all, who wants to be last man in A? One does not have to be an old guy to remember Curt Bestul but, of course, it helps. Every horseshoe pitcher in this state, then and now, owes him a deep debt of gratitude. I d like to go down n back once more with Curt Bestul. 0 Jeff Gustafson s New Years Day (Results on Page ) P a g e POY Update By, Jane Smith At this printing we have WHPA tournaments recorded for the Pitcher of the Year award. These tournaments began in August of 0 and include the tournaments through Jan 0. There are 7 pitchers who have earned points from placing st, nd or rd in tournaments or attended the WHPA Fall meeting. There are three Divisions: A averages, above %; C averages, less than 0%; B averages, between 0% and.99. Pitchers are placed in their division based on the year end averages printed in this issue. There is one pitcher who has earned 6 points. The top five pitchers in each division are listed alphabetically: Division A- Glenn Bogenschneider, Ron Button, Galen Kozel, John Meyer, Randy Rein; Division B Tom Endler, Jim Ganther, Ed Hack, Kerry Morris, John Olson; Division C Greg Bergles, John Brophy, Karen Keelin, Ann Murray, Tom Steinke. There a minimum of 9 tournaments scheduled where one can earn points for this award. Join some buddies and carpool to a tournament. As a New Year s resolution, add a new tournament to your schedule. A list of tournaments is printed in this issue and can be found on the WHPA web page. Happy New Year!! What s New? By, Jane Smith I am very fortunate to have such talented gentlemen/ladies to work with on the WHNL. My job has perks no one else usually sees. I should share these more often. When subscribers send their renewal money, more times than not we receive compliments about our publication; best in the nation, very informative, personal and caring, sharing about former pitchers who are ill, keeping up with all of the new happenings in the association, an endless list. A special note was received from Dan Ebert who does not play much anymore but likes to know what is happening and shares that Fillmore still has courts up and running.
