13 2006 SEASON OUTLOOK SAMFORD PRIMED FOR SUCCESS THROUGH HARD WORK AND DEDICATION E xpectations for the softball team continue to rise. The Bulldogs, who have excelled under the tutelage of fourth-year Head Coach Beanie Ketcham, return 11 players, including seven starters, from last season s team. They also have recruited a highly touted freshman class. In 2005, Samford finished with a 17-9 Ohio Valley Conference record and earned third place in the league s final standings. After having one of the youngest teams in the conference last year, the 2006 version of the Bulldog softball team still will be fairly young but also will be experienced. Twelve players on Samford s roster have earned significant playing time over the past few seasons, and 13 made at least five starts a year ago. Despite a roster comprising five freshmen, six sophomores, four juniors and only three seniors, Coach Ketcham is impressed with the maturity of her team and expects big things from her players this season. The league s 10 head coaches also are expecting big things from Samford, as the Bulldogs were picked to finish fourth in the OVC. Being picked fourth in the preseason poll definitely gives us motivation and something to work toward, said Ketcham. We are playing one of the toughest nonconference schedules in the league this season, and I hope that will allow us to excel in OVC play. Ketcham welcomes back six position starters and two pitchers from a year ago. Junior pitcher Susanna Meyer (Davie, Fla.) and junior outfielder Shelley Stanley (Decatur, Ala.) are among the Bulldogs top returnees. It is a huge advantage for us to have as many returning players as we do, said Ketcham. Last year, our team was so young. Now, we have a lot more confidence, experience and a better idea of what we need to do as a team. This is definitely the best team that we ve had here. SENIORS POS B/T HT Erin Hall OF R/R 5-3 Emilee Lewis P R/R 5-9 Caroline Powell UTL R/R 5-6 PITCHERS The Samford pitching staff is one of the best in the OVC and is looking to have a recordbreaking season in Meyer, a secondteam All-Conference performer in 2005, will again anchor the staff this season. Senior Emilee Lewis (Vacaville, Calif.) and freshman Stephanie Royall (Mill Valley, Calif.) also are expected to play valuable roles on the pitching staff this season. Meyer, who tallied a record last season, finished the year ranked third in the OVC in shutouts (six), saves (three) and appearances (39). She started 24 times last year and hurled 14 complete games. She finished the season with six shutouts. In her sophomore season, she placed fourth in the OVC in both wins (17) and strikeouts (179), and was fifth in the league in earned run average (2.14). Last year, Lewis continued to leave her mark in the school s record book, moving into sixth place on Samford s all-time strikeout list. She finished the season with 188 career strikeouts and ended the year as the eighth-ranked pitcher in the OVC in appearances (33). Lewis also finished as the 10th-ranked pitcher in the 2006 OVC PRESEASON POLL as voted on by the league s 11 head coaches 1. Royall enters her freshman campaign as one of the most touted players in school history. The 5-foot-10 right-handed pitcher from Tamalpais High School is coming off an illustrious prep career and will be looked on to make an immediate impact this season. At Tamalpais, she earned the 2005 U.S. Army Reserve National Scholar/Athlete Award and was named her league s Pitcher of the Year. Stephanie is a great addition to the pitching staff, Ketcham said. She has great spin and movement on her pitches, and she gives the pitching staff a different look this season. Susanna and Emilee will be our bread and butter, but Stephanie gives us a solid third option. CATCHERS Samford has a pair of sophomore catchers on its roster this season: Tracey Deaux (Collierville, Tenn.) and Meghan Wagner (Chico, Calif.). Both saw a significant amount of time behind the plate last year. Both players possess strong arms and are very solid defensively. Last season, Deaux played in 25 games and made 21 starts, primarily at catcher. She 13

14 2006 SEASON OUTLOOK compiled a.158 batting average and drove in six runs while committing only two errors. Deaux finished the year with the team s second-highest fielding percentage among consistent starters (.982). Wagner received a majority of the starts, making 45-of-53 appearances in the starting lineup. She proved to be one of the best power hitters on the team last season, hitting a pair of grand slams in the 2005 Mercer Tournament. She connected on a game winner against Marist Feb. 25, and then blasted another one versus Mississippi Valley State Feb. 26. She finished second on the team in home runs (four), runs batted in (24), slugging percentage (.413) and putouts (222). Wagner accumulated eight doubles and tied for the team s lead, compiling a.229 batting average. Meghan and Tracey will see a lot of playing time this year, said Ketcham. They are very good behind the plate and in handling the pitchers. The determining factor for playing time this season will be who is hitting the ball better. JUNIORS POS B/T HT Jenna Dempski 1B R/R 5-11 Susanna Meyer P R/R 5-9 Liz Pearse SS R/R 5-6 Shelley Stanley 1B L/R 5-11 INFIELDERS Junior Liz Pearse (Cary, N.C.) and sophomore Bethany Weisser (Alamo, Calif.) are returning starters in the infield this season. Weisser, who played primarily at third base a year ago, will most likely start at first base this season, while Pearse is expected to resume her place at shortstop. With Pearse at shortstop and Weisser at first base, Samford s Katie England (Birmingham, Ala.) most likely will get the starting nod at third base. She played a predominant portion of the fall season at the position and impressed the coaching staff with her defense. Katie is a very strong player with a great arm, said Ketcham. She has the potential to add a lot of power to the lineup and is very good defensively. She will see a good amount of playing time at third base this season and possibly even some time at shortstop. Jenna Dempski (Round Rock, Texas), who made 44 starts at first base last season, underwent shoulder surgery during the offseason and will be the Bulldogs starter at designated hitter this year. Meghan Wagner Freshman Rachael Reeves (Mobile, Ala.) could get the nod at second base this season, while senior Caroline Powell (Semora, N.C.) will play first and Kylie Harmon (Matthews, Ala.) is expected to split time between the third and second base positions. Powell, one of Samford s three team captains this season, made five starts a year ago and didn t commit a single error. She also came off the bench to play in 16 additional games. SOPHOMORES POS B/T HT Emily Deaux OF R/R 5-7 Tracey Deaux C R/R 5-7 Jeslyn Metcalf OF R/B 5-6 Meghan Wagner C R/R 5-6 Bethany Weisser 1B/3B R/R 5-9 Heather Williams UTL R/R 5-6 Sophomore Heather Williams (Rockledge, Fla.), the school s all-time record holder in both the bench press and the inclined bench press, is one of the best athletes on the team. She will see playing time at first base. Last season, she batted.200, scored seven runs and tallied four runs batted in. Williams also could spend time this season as the team s designated hitter. OUTFIELDERS Samford returns two of its three starting outfielders from last season. Senior captain Erin Hall (Dothan, Ala.) is expected to play left field for the Bulldogs, while Stanley will hold down the right field position. Sophomore speedster Jeslyn Metcalf (Dothan, Ala.) and freshman Jessica Owens (Ft. Walton Beach, Fla.) will battle for the starting job in center field, and Owens will also spend some time as the backup at shortstop. Hall and Stanley are expected to be two of the most productive players on the team this season. Stanley, a 5-foot-11 power hitter, led the team in home runs (seven), runs batted in (27) and slugging percentage (.476) last season. She also finished second on the squad in batting average (.283) and was tied for first place in runs scored (27). In 2005, Hall started in 50 games for the Bulldogs and made 45 of her starts in left field. She concluded the season with a.220 batting average and 26 runs scored, tying for FRESHMEN POS B/T HT Kylie Harmon INF R/R 5-2 Jessica Owens UTL L/R 5-9 Katie England INF R/R 5-6 Stephanie Royall P R/R 5-10 Rachael Reeves INF L/R 5-1 first place on the team with eight doubles. Hall was also second on the squad with five stolen bases on seven attempts. Metcalf, who finished third on the team in stolen bases a year ago, started in 14 games as a true freshman. Sophomore Emily Deaux (Collierville, Tenn.) will be a key reserve in the outfield for the Bulldogs this season. After playing in 27 games and starting in 10, Ketcham said that Deaux has the potential to be one of the team s top hitters. Emily will be a very good collegiate hitter, said Ketcham. She just needs a little bit of confidence. She definitely has a tremendous upside and was recruited to hit the ball. SCHEDULE The Bulldogs will square off against their most challenging nonconference schedule in school history. On Feb. 10, Samford opens its 2006 campaign at the prestigious Florida State Early Bird Tournament. The Bulldogs then play three teams ranked in the preseason top 20. Samford is slated to meet No. 8 Alabama April 5, No. 10 Baylor Feb. 18 and 20th-ranked Auburn March 8. 14
