14 OUTLOOK BULLDOGS LOOK TO BUILD ON FIRST OVC TOURNAMENT APPEARANCE I n the three seasons that Mike Morris has been at the helm of the Samford women s basketball program, the team has made progress each year. In his first season, the team jumped from three wins to seven. The next season, the Bulldogs won 10 games, followed by 13 wins last year. Heading into , Morris expects his team to make even more progress. Making the OVC Tournament last season and coming within a 15-foot jumper of going to Nashville, our program took one step closer to our ultimate goal, Morris said. Our goal every year is to win our conference and play in the NCAA Tournament. We are very excited about the challenge of obtaining that goal. With six newcomers joining the team, and two players, Alex Munday and Chelsee Insell, coming back from injuries that kept them out last season, there will plenty of fresh faces on the squad. Basically, we have eight new people and six veterans, Morris said. We have a good combination of some returning starters with some experience and a lot of new faces. Samford returns three starters from last year s squad. With the return of Insell and Munday, who were the team s top two scorers and rebounders in , the Bulldogs have five players with starting experience. Three starters, Cora Beth Smith, Tish Pilkerton and Veronica Pike, along with reserve Andrea Ward, gained valuable experience last season. We had some players who got a lot of playing experience last year and had a very productive year, Morris said. They have confidence and their game has picked up, which is very encouraging, because we will count on them this season. Plus, we all know what Chelsee and Alex have done and can do for our program, Morris continued. In essence, we have five players who have regularly started over the last two or three years coming back. With that experience, I will look for them to lead our team and carry our team in a lot of aspects, but we will also be counting on our freshmen for playing time as well. Tish Pikerton Alex Munday GUARDS At point guard, Samford returns starter Cora Beth Smith, who led the team with 88 assists, and averaged 10.2 points and 3.9 rebounds per game. Smith also could see some time as a shooting guard. Cora Beth is a senior, has been in our program for three years and will be counted on to run our team, Morris said. She definitely has the talent and leadership ability to take charge of our team and our offense. She probably knows our offense as 14

15 OUTLOOK well as anybody. Sophomore Taryn Towns saw extended playing time at point guard last year as well. Towns played in 27 of the team s 28 games, averaging 4.8 points and 3.0 rebounds per game as a freshman. She also dished out 40 assists for the season. Taryn had a tremendous freshman year, Morris said. She showed she can handle the pressure of the point guard position. I anticipate her playing more and being a bigger part of our rotation. Sophomore MaKenzie Spruiell returns after appearing in 24 games as a freshman. Spruiell scored 1.7 points per game last season. MaKenzie is coming back with some good experience, Morris said. But, this is a position where we will have an opportunity for some freshmen to be able to play. Freshman Megan Wilderotter comes to Samford from Dominican High School in New Orleans. Morris expects Wilderotter to contribute to the team right away. She has the ability, the toughness and the knowledge of our system to be able to come in and help us at the point guard position, Morris said. She can give us some much-needed depth. Newcomers Monica Maxwell and Karmen Smith could see a lot of time at the shooting guard position. Both of them have the ability to make the three and to create things, Morris said. Both are very good passers as well. FORWARDS Junior Tish Pilkerton returns to the team after starting every game last season. Pilkerton scored 6.5 points and pulled down 4.3 rebounds per game last season. Tish had a very good season last year, Morris said. She is our best all-around defender and the hardest worker on the team. Redshirt junior Chelsee Insell will be back after sitting out last season with a knee injury. Insell was second on the team in scoring and rebounding as a sophomore in Cora Beth, Chelsee, Tish and our freshman guards are all versatile, Morris said. They can all play the two and three positions. Morris said freshman Chika Okoli should be able to contribute as well. Chika can give us a versatile player at the three with her athletic ability, strength and size, Morris said. She will give us some diversity in terms of things she can do for our team. Alex Munday returns after missing most of the season. In , Munday Andrea Ward was named the OVC s Freshman of the Year, as she led the team in both scoring a rebounding. Munday can contribute to the team as a forward or post player. Senior Andrea Ward is coming off her best season so far. Last season, Ward played in 27 games, and averaged 3.1 points and 2.4 rebounds per game as a junior. A. J. [Ward] has become one of our toughest players physically and mentally, Morris said. We will be counting on that toughness and leadership for her senior season. Newcomer Courtney Alvey will also be counted on to contribute at the forward spot. POST At the post position, returners Veronica Pike and Munday will see a lot of playing time. Pike started 26 games for the Bulldogs last season. She averaged 9.8 points and 4.2 rebounds per game. Veronica Pike Veronica had an outstanding season last year, Morris said. She has developed into a consistent low post scorer and rebounder. Morris said that freshman Jennifer Elkins could contribute at the post position as well. I see her having an opportunity to get some quality minutes there with her size, Morris said. 15
