14 2005 SEASON OUTLOOK BULLDOGS EXPECT TO CHALLENGE FOR CONFERENCE TITLE IN 2005 T he 2005 version of the Samford University softball team is comprised of six returning position starters and a pair of young, talented pitchers who each saw a significant amount of playing time in the circle a year ago. With the amount of talent returning in the starting lineup and much-needed depth coming from eight highly touted newcomers, third-year Head Coach Beanie Ketcham has high hopes of vying for the conference title. Last year, in the Bulldogs inaugural season as a member of the Ohio Valley Conference, Ketcham s squad compiled a competitive overall record despite suffering numerous injuries to key members of the team. The Bulldogs began to gel at the end of the season and finished the campaign with wins in 19 of their final 29 games. Samford finished with an impressive 17-9 conference record in 2004, and a majority of the younger players on the team received critical playing time. This season, the coaching staff is relying on those younger players to use that experience as a building block for the upcoming campaign. PITCHERS Samford boasts three quality pitchers on its staff again this season with junior Emilee Lewis (Vacaville, Calif.), sophomore Susanna Meyer (Davie, Fla.) and freshman Haley Scism (Concord, N.C.). Meyer, who already litters the Bulldogs all-time record book in both strikeouts and earned run average, returns to Samford as a sophomore looking to build upon her 13-win season last year. In innings pitched, she struck out 157 batters and hurled 13 complete games. She also earned a 1.76 ERA and made 27 starts for the Bulldogs. Susanna is a force to be reckoned with this season, said Ketcham. She is coming off of a very good freshman campaign and has been working on her consistency during the off-season. She has been nothing but business ever since the beginning of fall practice and is one of the hardest workers on the team. SENIORS POS B/T HT Trisha Holman OF B/L 5-4 Kelly Smith 2B R/R 5-5 Lewis, who finished the 2004 season with the third-lowest ERA in school history (1.59), has continued to make progress with her pitches and is expected to see more of a starting role this year. Last season, she primarily saw action as a reliever and set the Samford record for saves with three. Lewis also struck out 65 batters in 74.2 innings pitched and hurled four complete games. Scism joins the Bulldogs as a freshman this season and is expected to contribute key innings in the circle. She enters as one of the more talented players on the team but needs to work on consistency. If that is accomplished, Scism will be asked to pitch a greater number of innings later in the season OVC PRESEASON POLL as voted on by the league s 11 head coaches 1. Eastern Kentucky (five first-place votes) Jacksonville State (five first-place votes) UT Martin Tennessee Tech Samford Southeast Missouri Eastern Illinois Austin Peay Morehead State Tennessee State 12 Teams are awarded nine points for a first-place vote, eight for second, etc. Susanna Meyer CATCHERS After losing senior tricaptain and long-time starter Bridgett Smith to graduation following the 2004 season, Coach Ketcham will look to a pair of gifted freshmen to fill the void behind the plate this year. Neither player won the outright starting job during the fall tournament season, but both showed glimpses of brilliance. Meghan Wagner (Chico, Calif.), who has the strongest arm on the team, is the oddson favorite to be in the starting lineup on opening day, but Tracey Deaux (Collierville, Tenn.) has been working extremely hard in practice and is expected to see a lot of playing time behind the plate. Tracey is one of the hardest workers that I have ever coached, Ketcham said. She goes all-out on every play and never slacks off. I love how she plays with a lot of energy. INFIELDERS Team captains Kelly Smith (Chattanooga, Tenn.) and Liz Pearse (Cary, N.C.) are expected to anchor the Bulldogs infield this season as they comprise what is arguably the OVC s most talented double-play tandem up the middle. Smith, one of the most decorated players in Samford history, heads into her senior season as one of the Bulldogs emotional leaders both on and off the field. A year ago, she led the team in both hits (59) and doubles (16), and was recognized as a first-team All- OVC performer. Smith batted.470 in 26 league games and was named the conference s Player of the Week May 10 after going 10-of- 14 and driving in five runs against the league s top competition. 14

15 2005 SEASON OUTLOOK Kelly is a clutch performer, said Ketcham. She has the best approach to hitting on the team. She sees the ball really well and has a great eye at the plate. She is poised to have an outstanding season this year. JUNIORS POS B/T HT Erin Hall OF R/R 5-3 Emilee Lewis P R/R 5-9 Caroline Powell UT R/R 5-6 Pearse, who started all but one game at shortstop as a freshman last season, enters her sophomore campaign looking to build upon her early experience and is expected to take her game to a new level. In 2004, she batted a solid.224 and finished third on the team in doubles with 10. On the corners, freshman Bethany Weisser (Alamo, Calif.) is the front-runner to start at third base, while sophomore Jenna Dempski (Round Rock, Texas) is expected to continue to hold down the fort at first base. Weisser, who turned in an outstanding tournament season in the fall, is a solid defensive player who has good instincts on bunt situations. She also has a very strong arm and can make the necessary throws on the run. Dempski started 59 of 60 games for the Bulldogs last season and finished with the team s third-highest fielding percentage at.968. She is one of six returning starters in Samford s lineup and is expected to be a dangerous hitter in the middle of the batting order. Last season, she led the team in runs scored (22) and finished second on the team in home runs (3). Alicia Harris (Baton Rouge, La.), Heather Williams (Rockledge, Fla.) and Caroline Powell (Semora, N.C.) also will see a significant amount of playing time this season. Each will be expected to provide plenty of key depth for the Bulldogs. OUTFIELDERS Samford has three returning players starting in the outfield this season. Senior Trisha Holman (Foley, Ala.) will continue to anchor the defense from her center field position. Erin Hall (Dothan, Ala.) is expected to use her blazing speed in left field, and sophomore Shelley Stanley (Decatur, Ala.) will be in right field. SOPHOMORES POS B/T HT Jenna Dempski 1B R/R 5-11 Alicia Harris 2B R/R 5-4 Susanna Meyer RHP R/R 5-9 Liz Pearse SS R/R 5-6 Shelley Stanley 1B L/R 5-11 Holman, who led the Bulldogs in batting last season with a.310 average, was named a second-team All-OVC performer. She finished the year ranked among the top 10 players in the conference in stolen bases (10), on-base percentage (.429) and walks (24). She started 48 games in center field during the 2004 campaign and again will be flanked by Hall in left field. Hall is one of the fastest players on the team and will continue to solidify Samford s outfield from left field. She started in 55 of the Bulldogs 58 games last year and only committed three errors. Offensively, Hall registered 35 hits and scored 19 runs. The only addition to the starting outfield this season is Stanley, Samford s sophomore power hitter. She is expected to be in the lineup at right field this year after playing most of last season as the designated hitter. In 2004, Stanley powered a team-high eight home runs and drove in a season-best 31 RBI. She also batted.302 and tallied a Samford-record 30 walks. FRESHMEN POS B/T HT Emily Deaux OF R/R 5-7 Tracey Deaux C/3B R/R 5-7 Jeslyn Metcalf OF R/B 5-6 Haley Scism P/1B R/R 5-6 Meghan Wagner C/3B R/R 5-6 Bethany Weisser 1B/3B R/R 5-9 Heather Williams UT R/R 5-6 With a trio of high-powered bats in the outfield this season, the Bulldogs are expected to receive a large portion of their offensive output from Holman, Hall and Stanley. Samford s freshmen Jeslyn Metcalf and Emily Deaux will add offensive firepower coming off the bench. SCHEDULE The nonconference schedule will be a challenge for the Bulldogs as they prepare for their second year in the OVC. The team opens its season with a doubleheader on the road against Troy Feb. 8, and then continues its 12-game road swing at the Southeastern Louisiana Tournament, a doubleheader at Ole Miss and a trip to Macon, Ga., for the Mercer Tournament. Samford plays its first home games of the 2005 campaign March 5 6, when the Bulldogs host the annual Magic City Classic featuring crosstown rivals Birmingham-Southern and UAB. After the four-game competition, Samford hosts both Auburn and Southern Illinois before traveling to in-state rival Alabama for a midweek contest March 17. Following its matchup against the Crimson Tide, Samford begins its OVC schedule March 25 against Tennessee State and starts its quest for a conference title. The Bulldogs are coming into the 2005 season as one of the most experienced teams in the league, but heavy favorites Eastern Kentucky, Tennessee Tech and Jacksonville State will be major contenders for the title. 15
