Samford (7-13) was led offensively by sophomore Shelley Stanley who batted a perfect 3-for-3 from the plate and slammed a three-run home run to dead-center field in the top of the third inning. The Bulldogs' senior rightfielder is tied for the team lead in home runs with two. Alabama (28-6) extended its winning streak to four-consecutive games and improved to 11-2 against the Bulldogs. The Crimson Tide jumped out to an early 5-0 lead as Alabama scored five runs in the bottom of the first inning. After Jackie Wilkins led off the frame with a walk, Ashley Courtney reached on a bunt single down the third-base line and Capper Reed was hit by a pitch to load the bases. Samford's starting pitcher, Susanna Meyer, then earned the first out of the inning by striking out All-Southeastern Conference performer Stephanie VanBrakle to bring up Dominique Accetturo. With one out and the bases loaded, Accetturo connected on the first pitch of her at-bat and lined a shot over the fence in left field for a grand slam. The home run, her team-high fifth of the season, gave Alabama an early 4-0 lead. The Crimson Tide's next batter, Dani Woods, then made the score 5-0 as the freshman first baseman skied a shot over the right-field fence. Samford rallied for a pair of singles in the top of the second inning but left Stanley and Heather Williams stranded on base to remain scoreless. The Bulldogs trimmed Alabama's lead to 5-4 in the top of the third inning as Stanley spearheaded a four-run rally by slamming a three-run home run to dead-center field. After senior second baseman Kelly Smith singled to right field to drive in Liz Pearse from third, Stanley crushed a fastball from VanBrakle and sent a towering shot over the center-field fence. The blast, which was her second home run of the season, scored Trisha Holman and Smith, and pulled Samford within one run at 5-4. Samford finished the game with four runs on six hits and tallied its seventh home run of the 2005 campaign. PLAYER OF THE WEEK - - SUSANNA MEYER, PITCHER Finished the first week of March with a phenomenal 0.48 earned run average in starts against both Birmingham-Southern and UAB at home in the 2005 Union State Bank Magic City Classic. She pitched a total of 14.2 innings and registered 17 strikeouts, while only allowing four walks. The Bulldogs sophomore from Davie, Fla., limited her opponents to a.189 batting average and only gave up one earned run on 10 scattered hits. She leads the team with 69 total strikeouts.
