18 Outlook bulldogs eager to start new chapter in Samford softball The Samford softball team begins a new chapter in 2011 with new leadership at the helm of the program. Head Coach Stephanie VanBrakle takes over the reigns after a stellar playing career as a two-time NFCA All-American at the University of Alabama. In her two-year coaching career start at Birmingham-Southern College, she posted an overall record of Helping VanBrakle write this new chapter are fellow teammates and former Crimson Tide standouts Mandy Burford and Kellie Eubanks. Our staff brings tremendous experience to this program, VanBrakle said. We have played the game at the highest level. We have all learned a lot from our experiences and want to share that knowledge with these studentathletes to build this program. VanBrakle said no matter what happens on the field in the spring, she refused to let her team be outworked in the fall. She and her staff implemented a rigid conditioning program that seemed to pay off when it was time to hit the cages in the fall. Samford lost a chunk of its leadership with the graduation of four seniors last season, but the Bulldogs have five seniors on the 2011 squad who have a Never Give Up attitude. Led by Kayla Burris, Aaren Fisher, Amanda Jordan, Allison Reynolds and Whitney Terry, this Bulldog team is ready to show what they are made of in Our seniors have been on board with what we are doing since day one and have all been selfless leaders, said VanBrakle. They want to do what is best for the team, and Kayla Burris because they have responded that way, it has led the way for the rest of the team to follow. VanBrakle said she has seen the team transform each day. It s amazing to think how far we have come during the fall, and I am anxious to see how much we improve during the spring, she said. Pitchers The Samford pitching staff ranges from experience to new talent in Senior Kayla Burris leads the pack as the most experienced Bulldog in the circle. She has mainly served as a reliever for the Bulldogs in the past three years. She is the school s all-time leader in saves with seven. She posted the team s third-best ERA (2.93) as a junior and posted a 2-2 record. Junior Robyn Harmon returns to the circle after a successful but rocky start to her Bulldog career. Sidelined by injuries and obstacles, she has yet to play a full season at Samford. However, she has posted a 6-6 record over the last two years and improved her ERA from 2.60, a team-low her freshman year, to 2.10 last year. She also has seen action at second base and as designated player. Sophomore Emily Waters got her first start as a pitcher in Division I softball midway through her first season, earning the win over Mercer. She also saw action against Auburn, Georgia Southern and College of Charleston. Freshman Nicole Bobrowski is a standout from Bob Jones High School in Madison, Ala., who should be a force in the circle in She also might see time in the infield. Catchers Senior Whitney Terry returns to her place behind home plate after redshirting the 2010 season due to surgery. She was a regular starter as a junior and posted a.996 fielding percentage that year. Terry is joined by senior transfer Allison Reynolds, who should

19 Outlook challenge Terry for a the battery spot. Reynolds followed VanBrakle to Samford from Birmingham-Southern. Infielders One could say 2010 was senior Amanda Jordan s breakout year. She started in 48 games and became one of the most productive hitters in Samford s lineup. The shortstop put a memorable mark on the end of the season with her three-run walk-off homer to seal the win over UNC Greensboro in the final game of the season. Sophomore Alex Adams came back strong after having Tommy John surgery her freshman season. Adams saw action in 48 games, starting all but one, and split time at catcher, first base and designated player. She ended the season as the second-leading hitter and led the Bulldogs with seven home runs. Junior Tessa Frates saw her role expand last season as she played in 28 games and started 15. Sophomore Madeline Baker proved her speed as a regular pinch runner in her freshman season. She saw action in 15 games and scored six runs over the season. Freshmen Julianne Surane (Newberry Park, Calif.) and Lakan New Head Coach Stephanie VanBrakle throws batting practice to her team during fall practice. 17

20 Smith (Suwanee, Ga.) will challenge for a role in the infield this season. outfielders Senior Aaren Fisher has proven herself as one of the best base stealers in Samford softball history. She was 18 of 22 last season and ranks seventh all-time with 32 career steals. She was one of four Bulldogs to start all 50 games last season and recorded the second-most RBI with 25. Junior Regan Bates is another new addition to the squad. She transferred from Birmingham-Southern, where she saw limited action. Redshirt freshman Brianna Chambers missed her freshman season due to a knee injury. After a great fall season, she will have to sit out for a second season with the same injury. Utility Sophomore Kayla Shaffer is another member of the 2010 freshman class who contributed greatly last season. She became a regular starter in the outfield, starting 41 of 46 contests. Redshirt freshman Arica Dykes spent most of her freshman season behind the scenes and is eager to get on the field this year. 56 REVIEW Bittersweet ending marks exciting future for Softball The Samford softball team huddles at the pitcher s circle before playing in the Magic City Classic. After making its mark on the Southern Conference in its first year of membership by reaching the semifinals of the conference tournament, Samford returned for year two in the league. The quest for another tournament berth was much harder, as cost containment measures cut the field in half to four teams. After battling obstacles in 2009, the Bulldogs thought they had reached the other side only minorly scathed. However, the uphill battle had only begun; the team faced another year full of obstacles at every turn. The giants Samford faced on the field were numerous five teams that finished in the top three of their conference the previous year, two defending conference champions and one team that finished in the nation s top five in With a smaller yet tougher preseason slate to tackle before getting into conference play, Samford began the 2010 season in Mobile, Ala., for the Madri Gras Invitational hosted by South Alabama. The tournament was postponed due to rare winter weather in the area, but the Bulldogs bounced back the next day to win the season opener with SIU Edwardsville, The win marked only the 10th time in program history that Samford won its season opener. The Bulldogs walked away from the tournament 2-1, splitting their Saturday doubleheader with a 5-4 loss to Central Arkansas and an 11-2, five-inning win over South Alabama. Samford went on the road for its first midweek matchup. The Bulldogs headed to Itta Bena, Miss., to take on defending SWAC champions Mississippi Valley State. The Delta Devils went undefeated in league play in Samford lost the meeting on a seventhinning rally by MVSU. After sweeping the home opener from Miami (Ohio), the Bulldogs hosted the annual Magic City Classic. Samford hosted UAB, Troy, Nicholls State and Alabama State. Samford fell in all contests except for a 5-2 win over Alabama State in eight innings. Samford then headed to Arizona State to take part in the Wilson/ Demarini Invitational. The Bulldogs grabbed two wins over a five-game stretch, defeating Northern Iowa and Idaho State and falling to Creighton, UC Santa Barbara and No. 9 Arizona State. Samford held Creighton scoreless in the tournament opener before the Panthers scored on a walk-off double to win the game. In the next game, Samford snapped a 7-7 tie with Northern Iowa with a five-run rally in the tenth inning to take down NIU. When Samford returned home the next weekend, the Bulldogs opened SoCon play against Appalachian State. Samford went 1-2, shutting out the Mountaineers in game two, 7-0. After a midweek loss at Kennesaw State, the Bulldogs made their way to South Carolina to take on Furman. Samford came away winless, however, and set eyes on a seven-game home swing. To open the homestand, the Bulldogs split a doubleheader with Murray State before getting swept by SoCon rival Chattanooga. Samford wrapped things up with a doubleheader split with Mercer. The Bulldogs then headed to the College of Charleston for Easter weekend, where Samford fell in the first two games but closed the weekend with a 2-0 win. A midweek matchup with Auburn a few days later saw Samford s largest loss of the season. The Bulldogs tried to bounce back with a hard-fought battle against cross-town rival UAB, but the Blazers scored the winning run in the bottom of the ninth inning to send Samford away with its 23rd loss of the season. 54

57 REVIEW Next up was Samford s second SEC foe in a week, Ole Miss. The Rebels came to Bulldog Field and walked away with a doubleheader sweep. Samford jumped back into conference play and took two of three from Georgia Southern, the 2009 SoCon Tournament runner-up. The series win was the first of the season for the Bulldogs. UAB came to Bulldog Field the following Wednesday and completed the season sweep of the Bulldogs with a 7-1 win over Samford. The Bulldogs went on a seven-game road swing, starting at league foe Elon. The Bulldogs took one of two from the eventual conference touranment champions before dropping a midweek game at former conference rival Jacksonville State. Samford earned its first series sweep of the season in Cullowhee, N.C., the next weekend and walked away with three wins in its pocket with scores of 10-4, 9-0 and 9-1. The final weekend of play brought a bittersweet ending to another chapter in the Samford softball story. Not only did the Bulldogs say goodbye to four of its most successful seniors Amanda Barrs, Katie England, Rachael Reeves and Stephanie Royall Samford also bid farewell to its most successful coach to date, Beanie Ketcham. In Ketcham s eight years at the helm of the Bulldog program, she posted an overall record of She led her teams to five conference tournament appearances in three leagues. In her first season at Samford, Ketcham coached her team to a school-record mark as a member of the Atlantic Sun in She followed that performance with a record in Samford s inaugural year in the Ohio Valley Conference. Five years later, her 2009 squad made a run to the semifinals of the Southern Conference Tournament in its first year in the league. The last weekend of 2010 brought UNC Greensboro to Birmingham. After a 5-3 loss in the first game on Saturday, Samford rebounded to defeat the Spartans, 7-1, in game two. On Sunday, the flood of emotions worked in the Bulldogs favor as the team came together and created one of the most memorable performances in program history. UNC Greensboro held a 4-0 lead after four innings of play. In the bottom of the fifth inning, Samford finally got two runs on the board before the Spartans could record any outs. Heading into the bottom of the seventh inning, the Bulldogs trailed, 4-2. With two outs and two runners on base, junior shortstop Amanda Jordan stepped up to the plate. Jordan swung for the fence, and that is exactly where the ball went, right over the outfield wall for a three-run home run. Not only had Jordan hit her fourth career home run, she had just won the game for her team and wrapped up the season on a positive note. Although the results of the season were not exactly what the 2009 Bulldogs were hoping for, many players showed glimpses of the foundation that has been laid and what is to come for the future of Samford softball. The productivity of the team spread throughout the squad, from the top to the bottom. Barrs left her mark on the record books in both batting and pitching statistics. She is the all-time leader in RBI with 119, while ranking fourth in at-bats (625) and hits (170). She is fifth in runs (79) and home runs (16) and seventh in doubles with 27. She is sixth in games played and pitching starts, and seventh in appearances in the pitchers circle. Royall left as the all-time leader in shutouts with 17. She was also second in wins (49), appearances (148) and strikeouts (463). She is third in the books in innings pitched with in five years, and she is fifth in complete games with 56. Returning pitcher Kayla Burris is the all-time leader in saves, and upcoming senior outfielder Aaren Fisher is making her way up the list in runs, RBI an home runs. She sits at third in all three categories. She could move into second place in stolen bases in She is the only returner to start every game in Robyn Harmon ended the season last year as Samford s leading batter with a.345 average. Alex Adams led the Bulldogs in RBI (26) and home runs with seven in her first year of action. Freshman Kayla Shaffer earned a spot in the starting lineup, and sophomore Tessa Frates proved a reliable replacement in several positions RESULTS Record: 19-31, SoCon DATE OPPONENT RESULT 2/13 vs. SIU Edwardsville W, /14 vs. Central Arkansas L, 5-4 2/14 at South Alabama W, 11-2 (5) 2/18 at Mississippi Valley State L, 6-4 2/21 MIAMI (OHIO) W, 2-1 2/21 MIAMI (OHIO) W, 4-1 2/26 NICHOLLS STATE L, 3-2 2/27 ALABAMA STATE W, 5-2 (8) 2/27 UAB L, 8-2 2/28 TROY L, 9-6 3/5 vs. Creighton L, 1-0 (8) 3/5 vs. Northern Iowa W, 11-7 (10) 3/6 at #9 Arizona State L, 6-1 3/6 vs. UC Santa Barbara L, 5-2 3/7 vs. Idaho State W, 3-2 3/13 APPALACHIAN STATE* L, 5-2 3/14 APPALACHIAN STATE* W, 7-0 3/14 APPALACHIAN STATE* L, 5-1 (8) 3/18 at Kennesaw State L, 1-0 3/19 at Furman* L, 2-1 3/20 at Furman* L, 3-2 3/20 at Furman* L, 5-2 3/24 MURRAY STATE W, 5-0 3/24 MURRAY STATE W, 11-3 (6) 3/27 CHATTANOOGA* L, 3-2 (8) 3/27 CHATTANOOGA* L, 7-4 3/28 CHATTANOOGA* L, /30 MERCER L, 5-0 3/30 MERCER W, 1-0 4/2 at College of Charleston* L, 10-2 (5) 4/2 at College of Charleston* L, 4-0 4/3 at College of Charleston* W, 2-0 4/7 at Auburn L, 13-0 (5) 4/13 at UAB L, 4-3 (9) 4/15 OLE MISS L, 7-3 4/15 OLE MISS L, 3-1 4/17 GEORGIA SOUTHERN* L, 1-0 4/17 GEORGIA SOUTHERN* W, 6-5 (8) 4/18 GEORGIA SOUTHERN* W, 7-2 4/21 UAB L, 7-1 4/24 at Elon* L, 5-3 4/24 at Elon* W, 2-1 4/25 at Elon* L, 8-4 4/28 at Jacksonville State L, 3-2 5/1 at Western Carolina* W, /1 at Western Carolina* W, 9-0 5/2 at Western Carolina* W, 9-1 5/8 UNC GREENSBORO* L, 5-3 5/8 UNC GREENSBORO* W, 7-1 5/9 UNC GREENSBORO* W, 5-4 Mardi Gras Invitational (Mobile, Ala.) 62 Southern Conference The Southern Conference [SoCon], which began its 90th season of intercollegiate competition in 2009, is a national leader in emphasizing the development of student- athletes, building lifelong leaders and role models. SoCon has been on the forefront of innovation to develop creative solutions to address issues facing intercollegiate athletics. SoCon established the first conference basketball tour nament (1921), tackled the issue of freshmen eligibility (1922) and developed women s championships (1984). It was the first conference to institute the 3-point goal in basketball (1980). SoCon is the nation s fifth-oldest NCAA Division I collegiate athletic association. Academic excellence is a major part of SoCon s tradition. Hundreds of SoCon student-athletes have been recognized on ESPN The Magazine/CoSIDA Academic All-America and All-District teams. Nineteen Rhodes Scholarship winners have been selected from conference institutions. SoCon consists of 12 members in five states throughout the Southeast, and sponsors 19 varsity sports and championships that produce participants for NCAA Division I Championships. 60

63 Southern Conference John Iamarino Commissioner Geoff Cabe Senior Associate Commissioner Membership History On Feb. 25, 1921, representatives from 14 of the Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Association s [SIAA] 30 members met at Atlanta s Piedmont Hotel to establish the Southern Intercollegiate Conference. At the inaugural meeting were officials from Alabama, Alabama Polytechnic Institute (now Auburn), Clemson, Georgia, Georgia School of Technology (now Georgia Tech), Kentucky, Maryland, Mississippi A&M (now Mississippi State), North Carolina, North Carolina State, Tennessee, Virginia, Virginia Polytechnic Institute (now Virginia Tech) and Washington & Lee. Dr. S. V. Sanford of Georgia was chosen as acting chairman, and N. W. Dougherty of Tennessee was named secretary. The decision to form a new athletics conference was motivated by the desire to have a workable number of conference games for each league member. With 30 schools in the SIAA, it was impossible to play every school at least once during the regular season. Play began in the fall of A year later, six more schools joined the fledgling league: Tulane (which had attended the inaugural meeting but had elected not to join), Florida, Louisiana (now LSU), Mississippi, South Carolina and Vanderbilt. VMI joined in 1925, and Duke was added in By the 1930s, membership in SoCon had reached 23 schools. In 1932, Sanford announced that 13 institutions west and south of the Appalachian Mountains were reorga nizing as the Southeastern Conference. Members of that new league included Alabama, Alabama Polytechnic Institute, Florida, Georgia, Georgia School of Technology, Kentucky, Louisiana, Mississippi, Mississippi A&M, University of the South, Tennessee, Tulane and Vanderbilt. Florida s Dr. J. J. Tigert, spokesman for the withdrawing group, regretted the move but believed it was necessary as SoCon had grown too large. By 1952, SoCon included 17 colleges and universities. Another split occurred when seven schools Clemson, Duke, Maryland, North Carolina, North Carolina State, South Carolina and Wake Sue Arakas Associate Commissioner Forest departed to form the Atlantic Coast Conference, which began play in The revamped SoCon included The Citadel, Davidson, Furman, George Washington, Richmond, VMI, Virginia Tech, Washington & Lee, West Virginia and William & Mary. Today, the league continues to thrive with a membership that includes 12 insti tutions and a footprint that spans five states: Tennessee, North Carolina, South Carolina, Alabama and Georgia. Current league members are Appalachian State, College of Charleston, Chattanooga, The Citadel, Davidson, Elon, Furman, Georgia Southern, Samford, UNC Greensboro, Western Carolina and Wofford. Leadership SoCon named its first commissioner, former Duke head football coach Wallace Wade, in December Lloyd Jordan replaced Wade as the commissioner in 1960 and served until Ken Germann became the league head in Germann was commissioner for 13 years and orchestrated the league s expansion to include women s athletics. In 1987, he was succeeded by Dave Hart, who spearheaded the transfer of the league office from Charlotte, N.C. to Asheville, N.C. Wright Waters succeeded Hart in SoCon expanded to 12 members, added three women s sports and posted record revenue from the basketball tournament. Waters was followed by Alfred B. White in A veteran member of the NCAA office, White introduced the current con ference logo and elevated SoCon s com mitment to the marketing and development of corporate partners. Danny Morrison headed the conference from 2001 to 2005 and orchestrated SoCon s move from Asheville, N.C. to Spartanburg, S.C. John Iamarino was named commissioner of SoCon on Jan. 2, He has promoted the conference through an ambitious agenda that has improved competition, upgraded compliance-related matters, and increased the marketing and brand awareness of the con ference and its member institutions. Doug King Associate Commissioner for Compliance Jason Yaman Assistant Commissioner for Media Relations Championship History The first Southern Conference Championship was the league basketball tournament held in The tournament remains the oldest of its kind in college basketball. Commissioner Germann spearheaded SoCon s expansion to include women s athletics during the season. That year, league championships were held in volley ball, basketball and tennis. Crosscountry joined the mix in 1985, and the league began holding indoor and outdoor track champion ships in SoCon insti tuted golf and softball championships in the spring of 1994 and added soccer in the fall of The Germann Cup, named in honor of the former commissioner, annually recognizes the top women s athletics programs in the conference. SoCon declares champions in 10 men s sports football, soccer, crosscountry, basket ball, indoor track and field, outdoor track and field, wrestling, baseball, tennis and golf and nine women s sports soccer, volleyball, cross-country, basketball, indoor track and field, outdoor track and field, tennis, golf and softball. 61

100 SECTION BULLDOG HERE SOFTBALL FIELD Bulldog Field Named Softball Field of the Year Samford University s Bulldog Field was named the Sports Turf Managers Association Softball Field of the Year at the association s annual convention in Las Vegas, Nevada, Jan. 16, The Sports Turf Managers Association grades playing fields for baseball, softball, football and soccer. It gives an annual award for each sport based on the field s playability, appearance of playing surface, organization of maintenance program, uses of facility that impact playing surface and inno - vative solutions to playing surface problems. This is a great honor for our program, said then-head Coach Mark Voisard. We work very hard to keep the field in the best condition pos sible so our players can perform at their best. We are very proud of our field, and the people who have helped to maintain it and make it one of the nicest playing surfaces in the country. Joe Collins, field and turf manager, does a great job maintaining the field and keeping it in great shape. The Sports Turf Managers Association has given this award for 13 years. Past winners of this award include Illinois State s Redbird Softball Complex and the University of California s softball field. 98

101 SECTION FACILITIES HERE The Samford University athletics program has risen to regional and national recognition through its commitment to athletic and academic excellence. Samford student- athletes have achieved much on the playing fields and in the classroom. Paralleling the competitive success of the program, Samford s athletics facilities also continue to develop. The Cooney Family Field House for football opened in August The convocation/arena/fitness complex, Pete Hanna Center, was completed in fall The center provides out standing playing facilities for volley ball, and men s and women s basketball in a 5,000-seat center, a fitness/wellness complex for the entire student body, and state-of-the-art training facilities for Samford s varsity sports. Also included in the facility are offices, meeting space and support facilities for coaches and athletics admini stration. The facility is adjacent to Bashinsky Field House and can be expanded up to 6,000 seats for commencement and other major nonathletics events. The Pat M. Courington Tennis Pavilion was completed in 2006 with three indoor courts, a support facility for locker rooms, offices and restrooms. Samford s Tennis Center also includes the Darwin C. Hardison Courts, featuring six outdoor NCAA courts. All-weather field turf was installed at Seibert Stadium in the summer of Facilities in Seibert Hall have been reno vated to accommodate academic programs and student recreation activities. Joe Lee Griffin Filed, completed in 2000, is one of the most scenic baseball parks in the Southern Conference. Samford s soccer stadium, located across Lakeshore Drive from the main campus, has become a premier soccer venue. Nestled among the trees along beautiful Shades Creek, the 1,000-seat stadium is home to the Samford women s soccer team, and was the site of the 2003 and 2004 Ohio Valley Conference champion ship tournament. Joe Lee Griffin Field, home of the Samford Bulldogs baseball team, was remodeled in 2000 to include offices, locker rooms and other support services in a facility that complements the Georgian-Colonial architecture found throughout the Samford campus. The Carl E. Miller Press Box was added in The Samford softball field was named the Sports Turf Managers Association Softball Field of the Year for Future plans call for expanded seating and support facilities at the 300-seat stadium. Bulldog Spirit Plaza, dedicated during 2005 Homecoming weekend, is the focal point of the area con necting Seibert Stadium, Joe Lee Griffin Field, Bashinsky Field House and Pete Hanna Center. Organized by the Class of 2003, the landscaped plaza includes a bas relief of the Bulldog mascot and more than 100 bricks honoring Samford alumni, current students, parents, employees, former athletes and friends of the university as a celebration of Samford s more than 125 years of intercollegiate athletics competition. The athletics department is building its capital campaign efforts to raise funds to further assure Samford athletes of the finest playing facilities possible. The Thomas E. and Marla H. Corts Arena in Pete Hanna Center is home to Samford s basketball and volleyball teams. The Pat M. Courington Tennis Pavilion adds three indoor courts to Samford s Tennis Center, which also includes six outdoor courts, the Darwin C. Hardison Courts. 99

102 SECTION STRENGTH HERE AND CONDITIONING Strength and Conditioning When Samford moved into Pete Hanna Center in October 2007, the school s student-athletes moved into a new weight room as well. The new weight room is nearly triple the size of the previous weight room at nearly 5,000 square feet. The room has been equipped by Hammer Strength at a cost of $159,000. Head Strength and Conditioning Coach Tommy Rohling, who played football at Samford from 1985 to 1987, has been involved in the school s strength and con ditioning program since its inception. With the opening of the varsity weight room in Pete Hanna Center, I have been able to experience both the genesis and the progression of the Samford strength and conditioning program from the position of an athlete and now as an employee, Rohling said. The facility not only allows our entire body of student-athletes to meet their assigned tasks and goals, it is also a recruiting showcase for our entire athletics department. The facility has been designed and outfitted with the very finest strength equipment on the market today, said Rohling. Samford student-athletes previously trained in a weight room in the basement of Seibert Hall. That facility, which Samford had used since 1987, was expanded in 2001, using a portion of a $500,000 gift from Birmingham 100 businessman Gene Blumely. The expansion made the facility three times as large as it previously was. Samford began its first off-season workouts in 1985 in the cage, as student weight room on the lower level of Seibert Hall. The Bulldogs utilized the cage until the summer of 1987, when Terry Bowden was hired as Samford s new football coach. In the summer of 1987, Samford s younger Bowden secured a donation to buy new weight room equipment before he coached his first game. The acquisition prompted the move of the varsity weight room to basement of Seibert Hall. The progression from the cage to the Pete Hanna facility is much like the progression of our athletics program as a whole, Rohling said. We started with a deliberate and methodical vision, and built step-by-step to the point where we are now in what many consider the finest facility, coupled with the finest overall conference in the country for a school our size. 103 SECTION ACADEMIC HERE PROGRESS RATINGS Samford Continues To Excel in Academic Progress Ratings Eleven Samford teams posted perfect scores for the year in the NCAA s Academic Progress Rate [APR] Public Report released in the spring. Once again, Samford University students have demonstrated that they excel academically, Samford President Andrew Westmoreland said. That our student-athletes are as competitive academically as they are athletically is a testimony to their commitment as true student-athletes. Samford is proud that we are leaders among our peer groups and in the state of Alabama with our annual and multiyear Academic Progress Ratings. In addition to the 11 perfect scores, four more teams posted scores of 975 or higher. Samford s average score for the year is 991.5, up from in last year s report. In the multiyear report, three of Samford s teams (men s golf, women s golf, women s cross-country) turned in perfect scores. Women s basketball (996), soccer (995), women s indoor track (997), women s outdoor track (991) and volleyball (990) each posted multiyear scores of at least 990. To have 11 teams post perfect scores again this year is an outstanding achievement for our student-athletes, Director of Athletics Bob Roller said. Our multiyear scores, however, are what really prove that they have consistently performed at a high level in the classroom. Eight teams posted multiyear scores in the 80th percentile or higher in their respective sport nationally, and five teams scored in the 90th percentile or higher, earning Public Recognition Awards. All 17 sports were above the national average in the report. Samford either led or tied for the lead among schools in Alabama in 14 sports. Samford had the highest score in the state in baseball, men s basketball, men s cross-country, men s golf, men s tennis, men s indoor track, men s outdoor track, women s basketball, women s cross-country, women s golf, soccer, women s indoor track, women s outdoor track and volleyball. Among Southern Conference schools, Samford is tied for first in men s golf, women s golf and women s cross-country. Eleven of Samford s teams rank in the top four in the SoCon. The APR compilations, first made public in 2005, are based on academic eligibility, retention and graduation rates for student-athletes at all 334 NCAA Division I member institutions. Samford competes in eight men s and nine women s varsity sports at the Division I level. In the inaugural overall ratings, involving the school year, Samford tied for seventh nationally. 104 SECTION ACADEMIC HERE ENHANCEMENT PROGRAM Academic Enhancement Program The National Collegiate Athletic Association [NCAA] has strongly enforced academic reform this decade as it pertains to student-athletes continuing eligibility and ultimate college graduation. Because of the tightening of new legislation, academic support services throughout the country have been highlighted to spearhead the additional success that is needed for student-athletes to earn a degree. The academic success for Samford University student-athletes begins with the Academic Enhancement Program [AEP] that is supervised by Assistant Director of Athletics for Academic Services Chris Scott. The AEP was developed in the early 1990s by Senior Associate Director of Athletics Peter Neuberger and has been directed by Scott for the past nine years. The AEP is based on individual instruction with student-athletes who are integrated within a caring environment that is conducive to academic success. 102 The AEP system is designed to provide Samford s student-athletes with the necessary guidance, personal attention and academic skillsenhancement activities to help them have the most positive educational and personal experience possible. Studentathletes are integrated within a foun dation of the university s general education core cur riculum that emphasizes basic skills for academic achievement. Junior- and senior-level peer tutors assist athletes in English, foreign languages, math, science and business. With tutorial sessions incorporating improved study techniques, the AEP puts student-athletes in position to succeed and become independent learners. The AEP environment includes a seminar room with 104 seats, which is adjacent to a computer lab with 28 terminals. In conjunction with the Career Development Center, the Writing Center, Math Lab and all student support services, the AEP is a bridge from freshman orientation to gradu ation and professional life. According to the 2008 NCAA graduation report, Samford had a graduation rate of 97 percent of student-athletes exhausting eligibility between The AEP strives to meet the needs, concerns and overall welfare of all student- athletes. Each May, the annual Academic Recognition Social honors student-athletes who have achieved a 3.0 GPA or better over the last two full terms. The event also strengthens the link between athletics and the academic community at Samford. Last spring, 99 studentathletes were recognized at the social, including four who earned perfect 4.0 GPAs. Under the AEP s direction, Samford inducted its first class into the national college athlete honor society, Chi Alpha Sigma, in May Student-athletes are selected each academic year based on being at least a junior academically and maintaining a cumulative GPA of 3.40 or higher. NCAA CHAMPS/Life Skills The Department of Athletics offers a variety of support programs for studentathletes, including the NCAA CHAMPS/ Life Skills Program. This student develop ment program exists to enhance the quality of the student-athlete experience within the university setting. There are five focus areas that address student-athlete development. Commitment to Academic Excellence: To support the academic progress of student- athletes toward intellectual development and graduation Commitment to Athletic Excellence: To build philosophical foundations for the develop ment of athletics programs that are broadbased, equitable and dedicated to the well-being of student-athletes Commitment to Personal Development: To support the development of a well-balanced lifestyle for student-athletes, encouraging emotional well-being, personal growth and decision-making skills Commitment to Career Development: To encourage studentathletes to develop and pursue career and life goals Commitment to Service: To engage student-athletes in service to their campus and surrounding community
