14 OUTLOOK SAMFORD OPPONENTS RECORDS REVIEW PLAYERS OUTLOOK COACHES QUICK FACTS EXCITEMENT IS IN STORE FOR THE BULLDOGS IN THE 2009 CAMPAIGN T he 2009 Samford softball team enters this year s campaign with new opponents and a new conference, which brings excitement to the horizon for the Bulldog squad. The combination of veteran leadership and youthful desire is a mix that Samford Head Coach Beanie Ketcham and her staff look forward to seeing played out on the field. As Ketcham enters her seventh year at the helm of the Samford softball program, she and the Bulldogs enter a new era together after leaving the Ohio Valley Conference. In five years of membership in the OVC, the Bulldogs had four winning conference records, reaching the conference tournament each of those years and finally making an appearance in the semifinals in Despite player injuries and challenges, the Bulldogs put together a solid second half of the 2008 Aaren Fisher season, finishing the year with a overall record, in the OVC. Last year, we were looking forward to a good season, Ketcham said. We had a good schedule, and we were looking to make an impression in the OVC in our last year. We ran into some injuries early and had to make some adjustments. The players started to realize how well they could play if they did what we asked them to do. Samford s 2009 squad features three seniors, five juniors, four sophomores and seven returning starters. The Bulldogs also boast the energy and youthfulness of four highly touted freshmen. SENIORS POS B/T HT Kylie Harmon IF R/R 5-2 Kristy Lawrence IF R/R 5-9 Jessica Owens OF L/R 5-9 Three players who contributed much last year should be an important part of the Bulldog squad again in Senior Jessica Owens, junior Amanda Barrs and sophomore Aaren Fisher all earned conference honors last season. Barrs landed on the OVC All-Tournament team, while Owens made the All-OVC first team and Fisher earned a spot on the All-Freshman Team. One of the fastest players on the team, Owens ended the 2008 campaign as Samford s leading hitter, run scorer and base stealer. She held the third-longest hitting streak in the OVC for the year and rattled off 17 multihit games. Fisher was one of only three players to start all 54 games last season. As a freshman, she knocked out seven home runs and was second on the team in runs batted in. Barrs made her way onto the OVC All- Tournament team by leading the Bulldogs to their first appearance in the OVC Tournament semifinals in school history. She was both an offensive and defensive threat, hitting.400 with one home run and four RBI in four games. In four appearances in the pitcher s circle, she threw one shutout and amassed an earned run average of JUNIORS POS B/T HT Amanda Barrs IF R/R 5-7 Katie England IF R/R 5-6 Rachael Reeves OF R/R 5-1 Stephanie Royall P R/R 5-10 Whitney Terry C R/R 5-6 PITCHERS After a year hiatus due to an injury in 2008, Stephanie Royall returns to the circle as Samford s top pitcher. The junior hurler picked up a school-record 19 victories in the circle in After her first two years at Samford, Royall ranked fourth in strikeouts and fifth in wins. She recorded the secondmost shutouts in history and the secondlowest earned run average. Stepping in to pitch for the Bulldogs last season were Barrs and Kayla Burris. Both will return to the pitcher s circle this season. Last season, Burris gained much experience in the circle as a true freshman. She appeared in 31 games as a pitcher, starting 13, and posted an 8-7 record with an earned run average of She pitched 118 innings with five complete games and a team-high three saves while striking out 96 batters on the season. She will relieve this season. 14 SAMFORD SOFTBALL

15 OUTLOOK Behind Royal and Burris on the depth chart is freshman Robyn Harmon. The 5-3 hurler from Matthews, Ala., is the sister of senior Kylie Harmon and a four-time MVP at St. James High School and the 4A State Tournament. Robyn has a great pedigree and plays with a lot of desire, Ketcham said. She will be a very good hitter. CATCHERS Junior Whitney Terry returns as Samford s starting catcher this season. In 2008, Terry caught in 25 games and finished the season with a perfect fielding percentage: 57 putouts and four assists with no errors. She also will be one of Samford s dangerous hitters. Whitney can do a lot behind the plate, Ketcham said. We will be looking for her to display consistency and confidence. Unfortunately, freshman Alex Adams will be sidelined for a year with an elbow injury. The 5-6 native of McDonough, Ga., was one of the top catchers in the state of Georgia last year. The southpaw with a quick release and strong arm was voted Defensive Player of the Year as a junior at Union Grove High School and is also a power hitter, finishing her prep career with a.350 batting average. INFIELDERS After a full year under the instruction of defensive coordinator John Garris, the Bulldog defense has taken on a new form. We are trying to be offensive on defense this year, Ketcham said. We are definitely quicker in some spots. Our players understand the new system, are getting comfortable with it, and have really bought into the concepts behind why we do what we do. Senior Kylie Harmon will be counted upon to be a leader in the infield this season. She will be at second base for the Bulldogs, while senior Kristy Lawrence will be on first base. Katie England will resume her spot at third base. In 2008, Barrs doubled as a first baseman and a pitcher. She pitched in 29 games last season and recorded the lowest ERA of the three active pitchers. She earned OVC All- Tournament team honors last season when she threw her only shutout of the season in Samford s second-round win over Morehead State. At first base, Barrs turned nine double plays. SOPHOMORES POS B/T HT Kayla Burris P R/R 5-5 Julie Handley OF R/R 5-4 Amanda Jordan IF R/R 6-0 Aaren Fisher OF R/R 5-3 FRESHMEN POS B/T HT Alex Adams C R/L 5-6 Tessa Frates IF R/R 5-3 Amy Gonzalez UTL R/R 5-3 Robyn Harmon IF L/R 5-3 England assisted 98 putouts last season but contributed the most as one of Samford s top players in the batter s box. She knocked out a team-high nine home runs, ranking her ninth on the career home runs list and second on the single-season list for Samford. Katie is one of the best third basemen I have ever coached, Ketcham said. She has the potential to be an All-Conference player this year and one of the top third basemen in the Southern Conference. Lawrence will start at first base but could see soe time in the outfield. As a junior, she led the Bulldogs in putouts with 245 and posted a near-perfect 5-for-6 on stolen base attempts. Amanda Jordan turned 10 double plays and assisted 137 putouts at shortstop last season. Ketcham says Jordan will pull double duty as an infielder and cather this season due to Adams elbow injury. Two welcome additions to the Bulldog infield are freshmen Amy Gonzalez and Tessa Frates. Gonzalez is a 5-3 utility player from Friendswood, Texas, who will be the lead-off hitter. She is a speedy, intelligent player who is aggressive at the plate and has the potential to make things happen offensively. Frates is a 5-3 utility player from Stuart, Fla., who was ranked number one in her class. She will be a utility infielder, learning as many positions as possible this season. OUTFIELDERS The Bulldog outfield features two All- Conference players in sophomore Fisher and senior Owens. Fisher earned a spot on the OVC All- Freshman Team last season after a very productive first year at Samford. She was one of only three players to start all 54 games, amassing seven home runs and 39 RBI. Owens landed on the All-OVC first team after holding the conference s third-longest hitting streak of 12 games and posting 17 multihit games on the year. She stole 20 bases last season, and is the school s all-time singleseason leader in hits, runs and stolen bases. Owens led the team in hitting with a.330 batting average and served as the team s lead-off hitter for most of the season. Sophomore Julie Handley and junior Rachael Reeves also will contribute in the outfield this season. Handley played right field in five contests last season while spending most of the season as a pinch hitter Kylie Harmon and pinch runner. She will challenge for a spot in the outfield this season, boasting good speed and the potential to hit for power. Reeves has recovered from an injury that sidelined her last season. She was able to watch and learn the ins and outs of the Bulldog scheme. She brings maturity and consistency to a veteran team. QUICK FACTS COACHES OUTLOOK PLAYERS REVIEW RECORDS OPPONENTS SAMFORD 15
