15 Campus Life Campus life at Stanford means celebrating the extraordinary talents among students, faculty, and organizations while attracting world-class speakers, performers, and scholars from around the world. These events offer the unique opportunity to live and learn in an inspiring college environment. Whether it is a prominent speaker, a cappella concert, an academic colloquium, a nationally competitive athletic game, or the opening of a new exhibit at the on-campus museum, Stanford is abuzz with opportunities to discover new passions, engage with a vital community, and have fun. Stanford s 6,584 undergraduates and 6,614 graduate students are distinguished by their initiative, love of learning and commitment to the larger world. Independent thinkers and relentlessly curious, students at Stanford bring passion and imagination to everything they do. Stanford students move in many different directions, often simultaneously. Having the ability to engage in multiple interests and find friends who are not only similarly engaged, but also exceptionally talented in those areas, is one of the values of Stanford s diversity. 16 Klein Field at Sunken Diamond A Slice of Baseball Paradise The Home of Stanford Baseball Of the many aspects that make Stanford Baseball a truly special program, perhaps none is more poignant than Klein Field at Sunken Diamond widely considered one of the most beautiful places in the country to watch and play college baseball. Nestled amongst the oak trees and featuring a delightful mix of generations-old tradition and new enhancements, Klein Field at Sunken Diamond is the setting for one of the most extraordinary and memorable college baseball experiences in the country. Klein Field at Sunken Diamond is one of the real unique treasures of college baseball said head coach Mark Marquess. It is a beautiful setting, and we are fortunate to have a home ballpark that offers the charm and amenities of Sunken Diamond. Modern Feel in an Historic Setting Originally constructed in 1931, the home of Stanford Baseball has undergone numerous upgrades in the last several years to add modern conveniences while maintaining the classic feel. The renovation began in 2001, with the addition of over 2,100 stadium-style seats close to the action along with renovated dugouts and a three-tier press box (which was renamed the Bud D. Klein Press Box). Seating sections were named after Lefty May, Clarke Nelson, Vince Sakowski and Jack Shepard. To stay in touch with a wonderfully storied history, the famous grassy hills on both the first and third base sides were maintained to ensure that current and future generations can enjoy Stanford Baseball the way so many have in the past. In 2008, the playing field was officially dedicated Klein Field in honor of longtime supporter Bud D. Klein. An upgraded ticketing system was recently installed, allowing fans more options for purchasing tickets and easier gameday access. We do have a little bit of the old and a little bit of the new at Stanford said Marquess. We like to think that we can honor the history of collegiate baseball and still provide fans with a gameday experience that rivals any in the country. The 2008 campaign also saw the introduction of a new scoreboard in right-center field, featuring a state-of-the-art, digital full-color high resolution video board that is among the nation s finest. Measuring 50 feet wide by over 17 feet tall, the scoreboard displays video replays and player statistics, along with the inning-by-inning linescore. We really wanted to give our fans a better experience, and this beautiful and modern scoreboard does that, explained Marquess. No Better Place to Play Completed in 2007, the indoor facility measures 16,500 square feet and features the highest grade synthetic turf. The result is that Stanford Baseball can now practice at any time rain or shine. The custom-built top of the line netting system can be arranged into a wide variety of setups, allowing the Cardinal to use as many as six separate hitting areas that measure 90 feet long by 30 feet wide and 17 feet high. The netting can also be moved back to the perimeter, allowing for a more open-style batting practice session or other baseball-related activities such as taking ground balls, throwing and pitching. I don t know if there s any batting facility in the country including the majors that compares to ours, said Marquess. For a hitter, you can t come to a better facility. Players also are treated to the amenities of the Bud D. Klein Varsity Clubhouse, which features the player locker room, coaches offices, training room and equipment room. Big Games, Big Crowds From early-season series against nationally-ranked opponents to a crucial Pac-10 set or an NCAA Tournament, Klein Field at Sunken Diamond has become synonymous with big-game baseball. The facility has served as a host site for 14 NCAA Regionals (1983, 85, 87, 90, 96, 97, 98, 99, 2000, 01, 02, 03, 04 and 08) and five NCAA Super Regionals (1999, 2000, 01, 02, 03). Playing in front of its home fans, Stanford has clinched 10 of its 16 trips to the College World Series at Klein Field at Sunken Diamond Baseball Media guide

17 Home Field Advantage Along with the oak trees and grassy knolls, another tradition is readily associated with Klein Field at Sunken Diamond winning Stanford Cardinal baseball. Stanford has won at least 17 games at home in each of the last 13 seasons, while compiling an amazing.748 winning percentage ( ) since The Cardinal went at Klein Field at Sunken Diamond in 2008, parlaying its home field success into the program s 16th College World Series appearance. A talented leftfielder, Bud was a twotime letterwinner in baseball at Stanford, playing on the 1949 and 1950 teams and earning all-conference honors following Stanford s California Intercollegiate Baseball Association (CIBA) victory in Following his graduation from Stanford, Bud was offered the opportunity to play baseball professionally by the Boston Red Sox, but chose instead to focus on family life with his wife, Jane. Together they raised four children: Kathy, Tom, 73, MBA 79, Dick, and Steve. Batting Cage Complex Stanford Baseball has the best hitting facility in college baseball, and perhaps in the professional ranks as well. Among the highlights: Roofed and lit hitting facility allows for practice any time, rain or shine Highest grade synthetic field turf 16,500 square feet Able to be configured into as many as six separate hitting areas that measure 90 feet long by 30 feet wide and 17 feet high Also able to be configured for a more open batting practice session, as well as taking ground balls, throwing and pitching Home Record Year by Year (since 1984) Taking advantage of the varied agricultural business opportunities available in California, Bud enjoyed a successful career spanning more than six decades. Stanford has been a grateful recipient of his good fortune, including the Bud D. Klein Varsity Clubhouse, dedicated in 1996; Bud D. Klein Press Box at Sunken Diamond, dedicated in 2001; and a renovated batting cage facility, completed in On April 26, 2008, the Klein family children dedicated Klein Field at Sunken Diamond in honor of their father, Bud Klein, for his love of the game of baseball and his fond memories of his experiences at Sunken Diamond. 20 Beyond Campus San Francisco Bay Area From bustling cosmopolitan cities to quiet coastal retreats, the San Francisco Bay Area is incomparable. First-class attractions, worldclass athletics, cultural diversity, remarkable skylines and breathtaking views make this region one of the world s most popular destinations. The Golden Gate Bridge Stanford s campus is located less than an hour s drive from San Francisco to the north, just minutes from the Silicon Valley to the south and within easy reach of the breathtaking coastal cities that line the Pacific Ocean to the west. San Francisco has been named by Conde Nast Traveler magazine as the No. 1 travel destination in the United State for 15 years in a row. Surrounded on three sides by the Pacific Ocean and San Francisco Bay, San Francisco is located on a hilly peninsula, occupying just 47 square miles of land. It is the center of the San Francisco Bay Area the nation s fifth largest metropolitan area with a population of more than 7.0 million and host to an estimated 16 million visitors each year. South of the Stanford campus are the cities of San Jose and Santa Clara, the anchors to the Silicon Valley. Computer firms and software companies can be found throughout the region, which is considered the leader among the world s technology industry. Yosemite National Park One of the world s greatest stretches of coastline is located within a short drive from Stanford. To the south is the Monterey Peninsula, which includes the picturesque towns of Monterey, Carmel and Santa Cruz. The Monterey Bay Aquarium, Cannery Row and 17-Mile Drive along Pebble Beach are musts for visitors. Further north and east of Marin County is the home to the Napa Wine Country and within a few hours drive from the Bay Area is Lake Tahoe, home to some of the finest skiing in the country and the wonders of Yosemite National Park. The Bay Area is also home to six major professional sports franchises, including the San Francisco 49ers, Oakland Raiders, San Francisco Giants, Oakland Athletics, San Jose Sharks and Golden State Warriors. 21 Two-Sport Athletes Two-Sport Athletes Success Beyond Baseball Stanford University has a long and storied tradition of two-sport athletes. Throughout the years, several Cardinal baseball players have also stood out in football. From the early days of the great Ernie Nevers, who played baseball at Stanford and went on to play professionally with the St. Louis Browns, to future NFL Hall of Famer John Elway, who played in the New York Yankees organization one summer, Stanford baseball players have been given the opportunity to shine in football as well. Some other great Stanford baseball players who also starred on the gridiron include Joe Ernie Nevers Borchard, Chad Hutchinson, Brian Johnson, John Lynch and current head coach Mark Marquess. Hutchinson played both Major League Baseball (with the St. Louis Cardinals) and in the National Football League (with the Dallas Cowboys and Chicago Bears). Toby Gerhart had the best season ever by a Cardinal running back in 2009, establishing the school single-season rushing record with 1,871 yards. The senior also set Stanford s single-season mark with yard games, while scoring 28 rushing touchdowns the highest total in school annals. He was runner-up for the Heisman Trophy, finishing second in the closest vote in the 75 year history of the nation s top football award. Toby Gerhart was runner-up for the 2009 Heisman Trophy and winner of the 2009 Doak Walker Award. NFL Hall-of-Famer John Elway was an outfielder for Stanford's baseball team.
