Dixie Youth Baseball encompasses 11 states in the southeast and each state will be represented to vie for the World Series Championship. For 2 weeks Lumberton and LYBA will host 60 teams, 720 players and their families for community based baseball. *LYBA is a parent run, volunteer non-profit organization. It is operated collaboratively with the City of Lumberton and it s recreation department. Admission Fee Daily passes for the 2018 Dixie Youth World Series will cost $10. 5 Dixie Youth 2018 World Series Wednesday, July 25, History of Dixie Youth Baseball Staff report LUMBERTON Dixie Youth Baseball has been expanding since its inception in 1955, and North Carolina State Director Carey Wrenn says the organization will continue to thrive on a local and national level. The next step in that local development is the Dixie Youth World Series taking place at Ray Pennington Athletic Complex from July 27 to Aug. 9. It s a big economic benefit to Lumberton and Robeson County, Wrenn said. It s also good for our program. It gives us some exposure. When 61 teams in South Carolina departed Little League in 1955, the foundation for Dixie Youth was created. Those teams went on to form a league that was originally named Little Boys Baseball Inc., before being renamed to Dixie Youth Baseball around When Wrenn became state director in 1985, the league as a whole continued to generate interest despite consolidation that took place in the years to come. North Carolina achieved one of its first major milestones with Dixie Youth when it hosted the World Series for the first time in 1979 in Leland. The state hosted the World Series two times after that. Fayetteville hosted the event in 1985 and Moore County hosted in This year will mark the first time North Carolina hosted the AA division as part of the World Series. The division is comprised of coach-pitch and machine-pitch teams for 7 and 8-year-olds. Alabama, South Carolina and Texas are among the states with the highest amount of participants in Dixie Youth Baseball. Eleven states have teams playing in the organization, and North Carolina ranks in the middle of the pack in terms of participants. North Carolina has also benefited from Dixie Youth Baseball s scholarship program, which awards 85 $2,000 scholarships per year to high school seniors who have played in the organization at some point. 6 6 Wednesday, July 25, 2018 Dixie Youth 2018 World Series History of the Lumbeton Youth Baseball Association Staff report LUMBERTON The Lumberton Youth Baseball Association has been involved with various tournaments since it was founded in 1995, and the Dixie Youth World Series is its biggest investment yet. Bruce Mullis, LYBA s secretary, said the organization is getting ready to welcome 700 players to the city after successfully hosting several events with a fraction of the number of participants. We ve hosted a bunch of district tournaments with 10 to 12 teams in District 9, and state tournaments with 16 teams, Mullis said. LYBA also hosted the Southeast to become a cosigner with LYBA as they planned to host the Dixie Youth World Series. That support has helped LYBA stay stable financially and operationally over the years. It has also been instrumental in pushing forward the development of facilities within the city, including the addition of a new baseball field at the Ray Pennington Athletic Complex. We ve never come close to dissolving the league, said Mullis, who has been with LYBA since The league hosted 20 teams this season throughout its Coach Pitch, Minors and O Zone divisions.
