July 19, 2015 Page 3 of 20 FROM THE LOS ANGELES TIMES Kole Calhoun's hot streak lifts Angels in win over Boston BY MIKE DIGIOVANNA The Boston Red Sox reduced Mike Trout to a mere mortal Saturday night, holding the hot-hitting Angels center fielder hitless with two strikeouts and a double-play grounder in four at-bats. But a pair of misplaced Rick Porcello pitches breathed plenty of life into the bat of Kole Calhoun, who ripped a pair of solo home runs to right field for the first multi-homer game of his career help the Angels to a 3-0 victory. Kole is one of those guys we count on, Manager Mike Scioscia said. He got it done tonight. Mike got it done last night. Kole is a really important part of our lineup hitting in front of Mike. Not only when he drives the ball like he did tonight, but when he gets on base for those guys. Calhoun's first homer came on a 3-and-1 fastball that was right over the middle of the plate. It was driven into the right-field seats for Calhoun's 11th homer of the season. The second came in the fifth inning, on a 2-0 pitch that looked a little low, but Calhoun went down and got it, sending it into the right-field seats for his 12th home run. It was two fastballs, Calhoun said. I got into some hitters' counts, got some pitches and just didn't miss them. Calhoun also singled in the seventh and is batting.311 (17 for 48) with four homers, five doubles and 13 runs batted in over his last 11 games. I don't know what the exact numbers are, but I've been swinging the bat well, Calhoun said. It's been a good month so far, and I've just got to keep it going. Hard-knock win Reliever Joe Smith had an inkling something bad might happen as he released his first pitch to Mike Napoli in the ninth inning Friday night. When I loaded to go the plate, his leg was in the air and I swear his tongue was out like he wanted to kill this ball, Smith said. I was like, Oh man, if I throw it down the middle, he's swinging, let's see what happens.' He hit it to [shortstop Erick] Aybar, so that was good. Smith was being facetious. Napoli's wicked line drive hit the outside of Smith's right shin before caroming to Aybar, who fielded the ball and threw to first. The out enabled Smith to notch a win when Trout hit a walk-off homer, but he was lucky it didn't send him to the disabled list. Smith suffered a bruise but was OK to pitch Saturday, warming up briefly in the eighth.

July 19, 2015 Page 4 of 20 I don't think I was going to throw another pitch [Friday], Smith said. My foot went numb, and it was pretty sore afterward. But I feel good today. Garrett Richards goes the distance in Angels' 3-0 win over Red Sox BY MIKE DIGIOVANNA Garrett Richards' pitch count stood at 104 through eight scoreless innings against the Boston Red Sox on Saturday night, the Angels right-hander's second career shutout and third complete game well within reach. But Huston Street's 300th career save was also there for the taking, and with a three-run lead and the Angels closer warming, Manager Mike Scioscia had a difficult decision for the ninth: Stick with Richards or give Street a shot at history. It was close, Scioscia said. Garrett was maintaining his stuff. He felt strong. The way he was feeling, it was worth a shot. Richards had one advantage over Street. He was in the dugout and had Scioscia's ear. Street was in the bullpen and couldn't plead his case. How much did Richards insist he take the mound for the ninth? As much as I could without being disrespectful, Richards said. I pride myself on being able to finish as well as I start. I wanted that ball. Scioscia gave him that ball, and Richards rewarded the decision, retiring the side in order in the ninth to complete a two-hit shutout that led the Angels to a 3-0 victory in Angel Stadium. Richards, who improved to 10-6 with a 3.24 earned-run average, struck out six and walked one, and of his 113 pitches, 79 were strikes. He retired the last 15 batters of the game, mixing his sharp-breaking curves and sliders with an explosive fastball that was still hitting 95 mph in the ninth. Combined with the bat of Kole Calhoun, who hit solo home runs in the third and fifth innings, Richards helped the Angels (50-40) win for the 13th time in 16 games and push their lead over the Houston Astros in the American League West to 11/2 games. It was Richards' first shutout since Aug. 4, 2014, in Dodger Stadium, and it handed the Red Sox back-toback shutouts for the first time since Aug. 7-8, 2009, against the New York Yankees. That's about as strong as we've seen him, Scioscia said of Richards. They're a lineup that will hurt you if you don't hit your spots. He threw a terrific game. Our pitching staff is one of the best-kept secrets in the game. Indeed, the Angels lead the AL with 55 quality starts, and their rotation, which has a 3.59 ERA for the season, has given up two earned runs or fewer in 15 of 18 games. Only one runner reached third base against Richards on Saturday night, with Pablo Sandoval doubling to left field to lead off the fifth and advancing on Brock Holt's one-out grounder to second.

July 19, 2015 Page 5 of 20 But Ryan Hanigan's soft liner caromed off Richards' back and right to second baseman Johnny Giavotella, who threw to first for the inning-ending out. Richards gave up a two-out infield single to Sandoval and walked Alejandro De Aza in the second, but he struck out Holt looking at a curve to snuff out the rally. A steady rain Saturday afternoon forced the cancellation of batting practice and raised the possibility of the first rainout in Angel Stadium in 20 years. The skies cleared in time for the 6 p.m. start, and the game was played amid an occasional drizzle, but that hardly put a damper on the evening for the Angels. They took a 1-0 lead on Red Sox starter Rick Porcello's wild pitch in the second, and then Calhoun went to work, driving a 3-and-1 fastball from Porcello into the right-field seats in the third for his 11th homer and a 2-0 fastball into the same area in the fifth for his 12th homer. It was cool, Calhoun said of his first career multi-homer game. Anything to help the team win. We needed those runs to get behind Garrett and let him relax and go out and throw one of the best games I've ever seen him throw. Up next Left-hander Hector Santiago (6-4, 2.33 ERA) will oppose Boston left-hander Eduardo Rodriguez (5-2, 3.59) at Angel Stadium on Sunday at 5 p.m. TV: ESPN; Radio: 830. FROM THE ORANGE COUNTY REGISTER Final: Angels Garrett Richards blanks Red Sox BY JEFF FLETCHER ANAHEIM Garrett Richards and Kole Calhoun borrowed the spotlight from Mike Trout for a day. Richards pitched his first shutout of the season and Calhoun hit two homers, the first multihomer game of his career, in the Angels 3-0 victory over the Boston Red Sox on Saturday night. The Angels, who have won 13 of their last 16 games, have expanded their division lead over the Houston Astros to a season-high 1 ½ games. Richards gave up just two hits and a walk in what was clearly his best game of the season. He began the ninth with 104 pitches and closer Huston Street warming in the bullpen -- sitting on 299 saves -- but Manager Mike Scioscia let Richards finish. Richards pitched a perfect ninth. Calhoun provided all the runs the Angels would need. He was 3 for 3 with a walk, including homers in the third and fifth innings. He continuing his own relatively quiet hot streak, hitting.354 with five homers over his last 11 games.

July 19, 2015 Page 6 of 20 Trout, meanwhile, had a rare off night. He went hitless in four at-bats, striking out twice and hitting into a double play. Smith: Albert Pujols' reunion with his special friend Champ sent spirits soaring more than any HR could BY MARCIA C. SMITH ANAHEIM It was a most heartwarming moment to watch, this display of human spirit worth remembering from this past week when Major League Baseball celebrated its players with All-Star Game festivities. It came the night before the Midsummer Classic on Tuesday at Great American Ball Park in Cincinnati, before young Angels All-Star Mike Trout led the American League to victory, before he repeated as the game s Most Valuable Player and even before he laced his leadoff home run. It happened Monday night just after veteran Angels slugger Albert Pujols ended his Home Run Derby without one. That, said Angels fan Trevor Hendershot, who watched the derby from his Irvine home, was awesome! Hendershot, 24, is the always-friendly, shaggy-haired young man who has been working as a Team Store greeter at Angel Stadium since He lives with Down Syndrome, welcomes incoming customers with forceful high-fives and Let s go Angels! chants during every home game. He smiled Friday when he recalled what he saw his favorite player do Monday night. Pujols, sweat beading from his dome, his muscles still firing from mighty swings, ran out of time to lift what would have been the 12th and tying home run to continue in the slugger s showcase. The future Hall of Famer had blasted 11 home runs in that semifinal round, one fewer than his 23-yearold opponent, Dodgers All-Star rookie center fielder Joc Pederson. Even in defeat, the humble Pujols, 35, smiled with grace, scanned the highest tiers of the stadium and absorbed the adulation for his best effort. With bat in hand, he walked over to Pederson to congratulate him with a handshake that he extended into a bro hug. While still locked in half-embrace, Pujols was surprised to see the shorter man in a No. 31 Dodgers jersey, quietly clinging to Pederson s hip, his eyes staring through square-framed glasses, begging to be part of the action. I didn t know he was there until I went over to Joc and my eyes looked over and saw him, said Pujols, whose reunion with this fan would steal the show. Champ!, a reenergized Pujols said diving to throw his arms around the man and lift him into the air.

July 19, 2015 Page 7 of 20 Pederson s tagalong was his oldest brother, Champ, 27, who has Down Syndrome. He wrapped his legs around Pujols hips and hung there, his right hand rising to touch Pujols on the cheek and neck. Why did your brother beat me? Pujols jokingly asked Champ. Because I told him to. I wanted him to, a gleeful Champ responded, getting Pujols to laugh. It was such a great moment that, no matter whether we were at the derby or on TV, I would have had, said Pujols on Friday. I know how important these times are to Champ and people like him. Pujols knows because the oldest of his five children, Isabella, 17, also has Down Syndrome. Pujols had first met Champ at a March 16 screening in Phoenix of Where Hope Grows, a movie about a hard-luck baseball player who finds inspiration from a grocery-store worker with Down Syndrome. That night Pujols waded through the crowd to find and introduce himself to the Pedersons. Stu Pederson, a former outfielder and pinch hitter who played briefly in the majors with the Dodgers in 1985, was there with his wife, Shelly, and sons, Joc and Champ. Joc, the Dodgers 11th-round selection in the 2010 draft, was spending his days in Camelback Ranch, trying to make the team. Champ was enjoying a movie night and recognized Pujols right away. You re my favorite player! Champ told Pujols, even with Joc standing nearby. This wasn t just because Pujols is a three-time NL MVP or a two-time World Series champion or the winner of two Gold Gloves and six Silver Slugger Awards as a first baseman. It was because Champ knew Pujols as a loving father of Isabella and a supporter of families with Down Syndrome through his Pujols Family Foundation. Champ admired Pujols and asked Pujols for a jersey. Pujols followed through. Three days later, on March 19, when the Angels played the Dodgers in a Cactus League game at Camelback Ranch, Pujols was at first base and reunited with Joc, who entered the game as a pinchrunner. Pujols told Joc he had a jersey for Champ in a box on the team bus. The delivery was made, and soon after, Pujols received a video from Shelly Pederson showing Champ opening the box to discover an autographed No. 5 Angels jersey. Champ was all smiles, and so was Pujols, while watching the video on his phone. When the Angels hosted the Dodgers for an exhibition game on April 2 at Angel Stadium, Joc ran over to Pujols during pregame warmups in the outfield. They hugged and then talked for a few minutes, forever bonded by a common unconditional love they show toward a family member. Pujols demonstrates this as a father, Joc as a brother.

July 19, 2015 Page 8 of 20 This connection runs deeper than their baseball ties that would lead them to becoming 2015 All-Stars and going head-to-head, attempting to match each other homer-for-homer this past Monday. This connection is part of my passion, said Pujols, whose foundation creates social experiences for Down Syndrome families through cooking classes, bowling nights, basketball games, arcade outings, fishing trips and an annual prom. Pujols knows about Hendershot, too. And it s because of Trevor, we have a foundation program to try to get more greeters like him in every stadium in the majors, Pujols said. Joc and Champ are so cool!, Hendershot said Friday before his Team Store shift. Champ should work for the Dodgers as their store greeter. What made this week so memorable for both Joc Pederson, making his first All-Star appearance, and the veteran Pujols, making his 10th, was having Champ there. I sent a message to him (Joc) the next day saying how proud I was to see him put on a show there and how happy I was to see his brother, Pujols said. For a rookie to perform like that and for his brother to be there to see it, it was pretty special. Seeing Pujols embrace Champ provided more power than any home run. The televised reunion reached from Cincinnati across the nation and into that Irvine living room where Hendershot watched it all with his father, Bob. Albert hugging Champ that interaction was a beautiful example of how far our society has come and how far our special children can now go in life, said Bob Hendershot. Champ on national television? It would have been inconceivable 55 years ago. On that Home Run Derby night, Pujols indeed showed his resurgent muscle, the biggest of them all being his heart. His exchange with Champ certainly tugged at all of ours. On deck: Red Sox at Angels, Sunday, 5 p.m., ESPN BY HAYDEN KNUDSEN RED SOX AT ANGELS Where: Angels Stadium TV: ESPN, 5 p.m. Did you know: The Angels 19-inning, 5-4 win against Boston on Aug. 9, 2014 was the longest major league game, in innings, of the 2014 season.

July 19, 2015 Page 9 of 20 The Pitchers LHP HECTOR SANTIAGO (6-4, 2.33) Santiago is having a career year, and at the midway point of the season has been the Angels best pitcher. As a result Santiago was awarded with his first All-Star selection. In 10 home starts, hitters are batting.189 against Santiago. Santiago s last start came against the Seattle Mariners where he went seven innings, gave up just one run and struck out seven in his sixth victory. Vs. Red Sox: 0-3, 3.91 At Angels Stadium: 4-6, 3.30 Loves to Face: Mike Napoli, 1 for 12 (.167) Hates to Face: None LHP EDUARDO RODRIGUEZ (5-2, 3.59) The Red Sox left-hander has looked impressive at times throughout his rookie season. Over his past three starts, Rodriguez has a 2.08 ERA and opponents are hitting just.234 against him. Throughout this year, Rodriguez has received a lot of run support, as his team averages almost five runs a game when he starts. Vs. Angels: First game At Angel Stadium: First game Angels Notes: Jered Weaver update; Joe Smith OK; Collin Cowgill frustrated BY JEFF FLETCHER ANAHEIM Jered Weaver threw a full bullpen session on Saturday afternoon, setting him up for a second simulated game on Tuesday. The Angels are still not sure if Weaver, who is on the disabled list with left hip inflammation, will need a rehab assignment after that. Manager Mike Scioscia is hoping that he won t. If he can show us what we are looking for in the simulated game like last time, he s ready for a game, Scioscia said. If he s healthy and needs to refine some stuff and needs a rehab game, we would consider it. When Weaver comes back, the Angels will have to make a move with one of the other five starters. We still have some time and we certainly have to see how Weave progresses through these workouts, Scioscia said.

July 19, 2015 Page 10 of 20 At this point, the most likely scenario, barring another injury or a trade, is that Matt Shoemaker comes out of the rotation. He could either go to the bullpen or be optioned to Triple-A. FRUSTRATED Collin Cowgill has had four injections in his sprained right wrist, and he's still not sure when he'll be able to play again. "Frustrating is an understatement," Cowgill said. "It's been pretty ridiculous. We're doing everything we can. It's just trial and error. All we're trying to do is buy some time. Rest a little more. Hope we come out of it." Cowgill felt something in his hand on a swing on May 24. At first, the injury was only thought to be something that would keep him out a couple days. He's been close to coming back a few times, only to have setbacks. "The last two times I get to Day Two of (batting practice) when the pain comes back," he said. "I can't quite get over that 65-percent hump. I can't really let it go in BP." JOE SMITH OK Joe Smith tested his ankle out playing Ping Pong and proclaimed himself ready to pitch. Smith was hit in the right leg by a smash off the bat of Mike Napoli in the ninth inning of Friday s game. The ball deflected to Erick Aybar, who threw out Napoli for the final out of the inning. I have no idea what exit velocity was, Smith said. All I know is that when I loaded to go the plate, his leg was in the air and I swear his tongue was out like he wanted to kill this ball, and I was like, Oh man, throw it down the middle, he s swinging, let s see what happens. He hit it to Aybar, so that was good. Smith said he probably couldn t have kept pitching in that game, but he was well enough to run up the stairs to the clubhouse after the game. And he was well enough to move around a Ping Pong table on Saturday. ALSO Tyler Skaggs said he has gained about 10 pounds from his playing weight last year, up to 205. Skaggs said it was his goal to gain more muscle. Skaggs, who is out for the season rehabbing from Tommy John surgery, said he is throwing two bullpen sessions a week, about 40 pitches each, all fastballs. Skaggs said he is not expecting to pitch at any level until spring training Carlos Perez was in the lineup to catch for the sixth consecutive Garrett Richards start. Scioscia conceded that Perez and Richards have worked well together, but he stopped short of saying it was a pairing he was committed to maintaining. For the most part we want these guys functional with both (catchers), Scioscia said The Angels cancelled batting practice because of rain throughout the afternoon. I ve been here since 1980 and I can t remember rain in July, Scioscia said.

July 19, 2015 Page 11 of 20 Calhoun's big night at the plate boosts Angels BY OSCAR TERRONES ANAHEIM On a night when he was outshined by his teammate, Kole Calhoun delivered one of the best games of his life with a pair of mammoth of home runs to help catapult the Angels to a 3-0 win. Kole is one of those guys there s no doubt we count on, Angels manager Mike Scioscia said. Kole is really an important piece to our lineup hitting in front of Mike. On nights when he can set the table and get on base for those guys, he s an important guy and he got two big hits for us tonight. In addition to having the first multi-home run game of his career, Calhoun added a single and walk to cap off his perfect night at the plate. It was something that was needed to tonight, Calhoun said. It let Garrett relax and throw his game. That s teammate Garrett Richards, who tossed a complete-game shutout. Calhoun, who s hitting.340 with five home runs over his past 11 games, said he s feeling more comfortable at the plate, and tonight was just another example. I got two fastballs, Calhoun said. I got in some good hitter s counts. I got some pitches and just didn t miss them tonight. I don t know what the numbers are. I ve been swinging the bat well. This whole team s been playing well over the last 15 to 16 games. It s been a good month so far, and we just have to keep it going. The Angels needed every bit of Calhoun s big game with Albert Pujols and Mike Trout going a combined 1 for 8. Scioscia said it was important for the team to scratch across runs and build leads using without having to rely on Trout and Pujols every game. You re not going to get the big guys swinging every night, Scioscia said. You need those contributions from all those guys. We almost got one from the bottom of the lineup tonight. For the most part, our lineup has to continue to evolve and get deeper to where we pressure teams one through nine in the order. Kole got it done tonight. Calhoun said it was big for him and the rest of the team to produce offensively. We definitely have some superstars on this team, but they re not going to have it every night. Maybe when they don t get some hits or something like that, it s nice that we can pick them up, especially our pitching staff. The pitching staff s been throwing unbelievable since coming back from the break. We have to keep that going.

July 19, 2015 Page 12 of 20 Angels' Garrett Richards throws 2-hit shutout; Kole Calhoun hits 2 homers BY JEFF FLETCHER ANAHEIM When Mike Scioscia approached Garrett Richards after the eighth inning to ask if he felt strong enough to pitch the ninth, Richards had to walk a fine line. Without being disrespectful, Richards said, I wanted the ball. So Richards told Scioscia, with apparently the right mix of confidence and deference, that he was OK for another inning. The Angels manager agreed, sending Richards out to finish what would be a brilliant two-hit shutout in the Angels 3-0 victory over the Boston Red Sox on Saturday night. He was dominant all night, said Kole Calhoun, who provided all the offense the Angels needed with two homers, the first multihomer game of his career. They had three baserunners all game. He threw the ball extremely well. Richards walked one and struck out six, retiring the last 15 Boston hitters. Richards lifted the Angels to their 13th victory in the past 16 games, as they have now expanded their division lead over the Houston Astros to a season-high 11/2 games. The Angels are in first place, despite a hot-and-cold offense, largely because of their pitching, which has been on display at its best in the first two games after the All-Star break. C.J. Wilson pitched eight shutout innings in the Angels 1-0 victory on Friday, and Richards one-upped him on Saturday night. It was the first time since June 2012 that Angels had starters pitch at least eight scoreless innings in back-to-back games. Richards had been due for the type of game that recalled his breakthough 2014 season. While still pitching very well, Richards had seen his numbers across the board dip slightly from what he did last year. His ERA was 2.61 last year, and it s now His walks are up slightly and strikeouts slightly down. To Scioscia, though, none of those numbers accurately reflects the way he has thrown the ball. Garrett s throwing the ball very well, very close to the way he threw it last year, and he maintained it, Scioscia said. He had great velocity tonight, and made pitches all night. Our goal is definitely to keep Garrett throwing this way from now until the end of the season and make sure he maintains his stamina. Richards had thrown 104 pitches through the eighth inning, a point at which a starter might normally be pulled, especially with a three-run lead and a fresh closer warming in the bullpen. In this case, it was Huston Street, sitting on 299 saves.

July 19, 2015 Page 13 of 20 Scioscia said it was close whether they would send Richards to the mound in the ninth. He consulted with Richards and pitching coach Mike Butcher, and both confidently told the manager that he could finish the game. Richards pitched a perfect ninth on just nine pitches, finishing off the second shutout, and third complete game, of his career. It s a great feeling, Richards said of completing the game. You don t go into a game thinking you re going to go nine. You just try to execute pitches and stay down in the zone and whatever happens happens. Tonight it just happened to work out as a complete game. FROM ANGELS.COM Richards is relentless in shutout of Sox BY DAVID ADLER/ MLB.COM ANAHEIM -- Huston Street's 300th career save can wait. Garrett Richards was just too good Saturday night for the Angels to need their closer. After eight innings of the Angels' 3-0 win over the Red Sox, Street was warming up in the bullpen, sitting on 299 saves; Richards was in the Angels' dugout, sitting on 104 pitches. It didn't matter. Richards was finishing the game, and he politely let manager Mike Scioscia know. "Without being disrespectful, I guess you could say. I wanted the ball," Richards said. He got it and finished off a beauty of a two-hit, one-walk shutout on a rainy night at Angel Stadium. His last pitch was a 95-mph high fastball blown by Xander Bogaerts for strike three and out 27. Kole Calhoun homered twice behind Richards then sat back and enjoyed the show. 7/18/15: Kole Calhoun connects on two home runs, his first career multi-homer game, in the Angels' 3-0 win over the Red Sox "We needed those runs tonight behind Garrett, let him relax and go out there and throw one of the best games I've ever seen him throw," Calhoun said. Richards' first complete game since Aug also a shutout -- pushed the Angels to 10 games over.500, at The Angels shut out the Red Sox for a second straight night, the first time a team had done that against Boston since the Yankees in August It's exactly the start the Angels wanted to their second half after riding a hot streak into the All-Star break, and it's thanks to the arms in the rotation. Richards and C.J. Wilson have combined for 17 scoreless frames in the first two games of the four-game series.

July 19, 2015 Page 14 of 20 That's let the bullpen rest -- an extra benefit since Street hasn't appeared in a game since July 8 due to a right groin strain, and top setup man Joe Smith took a comebacker off his right shin on Friday night. "I think that one of the best-kept secrets is really how our rotation's doing," Scioscia said. "We've been talking a lot about our offense -- are they gonna come alive -- and what our bullpen is doing. Our rotation has given us a chance to win the lion's share of starts we've had this year. The last couple of games are indicative of the way they threw in the first half." And the way Richards threw, Scioscia said, was indicative of the way he's always thrown in an Angels uniform, both this season and last. "I think he's shown a lot of the same things he showed last year," Scioscia said. "There's been one or two [starts] maybe not exactly what he's looking for, but Garrett's throwing the ball very well. Very close to the way he threw it last year. And he maintained it." Richards spins two-hit shutout vs. Red Sox BY DAVID ADLER AND QUINN ROBERTS/ MLB.COM ANAHEIM -- Kole Calhoun homered twice and Garrett Richards tossed a two-hit shutout to lead the Angels to a 3-0 win over the Red Sox on a rainy Saturday night at Angel Stadium. The Halos moved to 10 games over.500, extending their lead in the American League West to 1 1/2 games over the Astros. Boston right-hander Rick Porcello, who entered the contest with a 7.07 ERA in 12 career starts against the Angels, wasn't on top of his game, but he still held the Angels to three runs in his five innings. But the Red Sox were shut out for the second straight night. The last time Boston was shut out in back-toback games was Aug. 7-8 in 2009, against the Yankees. While turning in his first complete game of the season, Richards struck out six and walked one. In the first two games of the four-game set, the Angels' starters -- Richards and C.J. Wilson -- combined for 17 scoreless innings. "I think that one of the best-kept secrets is really how our rotation's doing," Angels manager Mike Scioscia said. "Our rotation has given us a chance to win the lion's share of starts we've had this year. The last couple of games are indicative of the way they threw in the first half." 7/18/15: Kole Calhoun talks about his first multi-homer game in the Angels' 3-0 win over the Red Sox, and receives a celebratory bath MOMENTS THAT MATTERED Kole's on fire: Calhoun had his first career multi-homer game, launching solo shots into the right-field stands off Porcello in the third and fifth innings. Calhoun is now 5-for-8 lifetime against the Red Sox's righty, and he's batting.324 (22-for-68) with six homers and 17 RBIs in his last 16 games. "I don't know what the numbers are, but I've been swinging the bat well," Calhoun said. "I mean, this whole team's been playing well over the last games. It's been a good month so far, and we've just got to keep it going."

July 19, 2015 Page 15 of 20 7/18/15: Kole Calhoun connects on two home runs, his first career multi-homer game, in the Angels' 3-0 win over the Red Sox Rocky Rick: Porcello's first start after the All-Star break mirrored his first-half struggles. Falling behind hitters early and often, the right-hander had shaky command the entire night. In the second inning, he allowed two walks and a wild pitch that allowed a run to score from third base as the Angels took a 1-0 lead before they recorded a hit. Porcello has now allowed 18 home runs on the season, fourth-most in the AL. 7/18/15: Rick Porcello uncorks a wild pitch to the backstop, allowing David Freese to score from third base Anemic offense: The Red Sox's bats have been kept quiet through the first two games of the series. Boston squandered one of the few opportunities it had against Richards when Pablo Sandoval led off the fifth inning with a double down the left-field line. The next three hitters were mowed down in order. The Sox finished the night going 0-for-4 with runners in scoring position. "It's been happening a lot this year. We've been having those times where no matter what you do, it pretty much doesn't work out," Red Sox designated hitter David Ortiz said. "We finished the first half good, so hopefully we can blame this on the four days off. We'll see how it goes." 7/18/15: Pablo Sandoval leads off the 5th inning with a ground-rule double down the line and into the stands in left field Richards saves the bullpen: Angels closer Huston Street was warming up in the bullpen before the ninth inning -- sitting on 299 career saves -- but he had also missed the team's last five games with a groin strain. Richards' gem gave him an extra day off. "There's only so many times you're going to be able to use Joe [Smith, setup man] and use Huston," Scioscia said. "We've been using them pretty much every time we have a lead to hold a lead -- especially when we haven't been scoring runs. So for us to win a game without using those guys is important." 7/18/15: Garrett Richards strikes out Xander Bogaerts swinging for the final out of the 9th, securing his third career complete game win SILVER LINING Right-hander Justin Masterson, who was in the Red Sox's Opening Day rotation, allowed just one hit over three innings in his second relief outing of the season. In his first relief appearance, last Friday against the Yankees, Masterson threw a scoreless ninth inning. "Tonight was very encouraging for him. Better stuff, more consistent late action to the two-pitch mix he has," Farrell said. "Tonight was better stuff all the way around. Better stuff, better late action. It was encouraging for him." Masterson's scoreless relief Masterson's scoreless relief 7/18/15: Making his second relief appearance of the season, Justin Masterson strikes out four Angels over three scoreless frames

July 19, 2015 Page 16 of 20 QUOTABLE "Without being disrespectful, I guess you could say. I wanted the ball." -- Richards, on how he told Scioscia to let him pitch the ninth inning WHAT'S NEXT Red Sox: Eduardo Rodriguez gets the call as the Red Sox continue their series against the Angels on Sunday. The rookie left-hander was one of the team's best stories of the first half, going 5-2 with a 3.59 ERA. In his last start, Rodriguez went 6 1/3 innings against the Yankees, allowing two runs on five hits for the win. Angels: All-Star Hector Santiago takes the mound for the Angels. The left-hander, who didn't pitch in the Midsummer Classic, recorded a 2.33 ERA in the first half, good for third-lowest in the AL. Calhoun's hot streak hits another level BY DAVID ADLER/ MLB.COM ANAHEIM -- Kole Calhoun should look at his own numbers; they've been pretty good lately. The Angels' right fielder notched his first career multi-homer game on Saturday night, his two solo shots off Rick Porcello leading the Angels' 3-0 win over the Red Sox. And Calhoun has been excellent at the plate for a few weeks now, as the Halos have surged to the top of the American League West. "I don't know what the numbers are, but I've been swinging the bat well," Calhoun said. "I mean, this whole team's been playing well over the last games. It's been a good month so far, and we've just got to keep it going." 7/18/15: Kole Calhoun talks about his first multi-homer game in the Angels' 3-0 win over the Red Sox, and receives a celebratory bath The numbers, over Calhoun's last 16 games going back to June 27, are a.324 batting average (22 hits in 68 at-bats) with six homers and 17 RBIs. That followed a stretch of about 30 at-bats that manager Mike Scioscia said weren't up to Calhoun's usual level. He was homerless in the 13 games prior to June 27, and he wasn't squaring up the ball. Both home runs Saturday came on Porcello fastballs that Calhoun was waiting for, in hitters' counts. He turned on a 3-1 pitch in the third inning and a 2-0 pitch in the fifth and deposited both well into the right-field seats at Angel Stadium. "It's big. It's gonna take a team," Calhoun said. "It's 25 guys. We definitely have some superstars on this team, but they're not gonna hammer it every night. We can't put that on them every night. So maybe when they don't get some hits or something like that, it's nice that we can pick them up." His long balls meant the Angels didn't need any more magic from Mike Trout, who hit a two-out walk-off homer in the ninth to deliver a 1-0 win on Friday.

July 19, 2015 Page 17 of 20 "You're not gonna get one guy to do it every night," manager Mike Scioscia said. "Kole is one of those guys that there's no doubt we count on. He got it done tonight; Mike got it done last night. Kole's really been an important piece of our lineup hitting in front of Mike." Santiago looks to keep Red Sox on ice BY QUINN ROBERTS/ MLB.COM Behind eight innings from lefty C.J. Wilson in Friday's 1-0 win and a shutout from righty Garrett Richards on Saturday, the Angels have held the Red Sox scoreless since the All-Star break. All-Star lefty Hector Santiago will try to continue that trend when he squares off with rookie Eduardo Rodriguez on Sunday at Angel Stadium. Rodriguez was one of the Sox's best stories of the first half, going 5-2 with a 3.59 ERA in nine starts. He got the win over the Yankees in his last start, allowing two runs on five hits over 6 1/3 innings. Santiago will look to build off a fantastic first half in which he went 6-4 with a 2.33 ERA -- the third-best mark in the American League. Against the Red Sox on May 24, the veteran allowed three runs on seven hits in 6 2/3 innings for the loss. Three things to watch for: Rodriguez is 3-0 with a 1.82 ERA in four starts this season when facing a team that is leading its division. In five career games (four starts) against Boston, Santiago is 0-3 with a 3.91 ERA. Red Sox first baseman Mike Napoli is batting.327 with 18 home runs and 36 RBIs in 48 games against the Angels. Street ready to resume closer's role BY DAVID ADLER/ MLB.COM ANAHEIM -- Joe Smith and Huston Street, the Angels' back-end bullpen tandem, were both available Saturday night against the Red Sox, manager Mike Scioscia said from the shelter of the dugout as rain came down on a tarped Angel Stadium diamond before the game. Street missed the Angels' last series before the All-Star break with a right groin strain, and took an extra day Friday to throw a bullpen session before coming back. Smith, who was serving as closer while Street was out, was hit in the lower right shin by a line drive off the bat of Mike Napoli in the ninth inning of the Angels' 1-0 walk-off win on Friday. "All I know is, when I went into my windup, his leg was in the air, and I swear his tongue was out like 'I'm gonna hit this ball,'" Smith joked in the clubhouse Saturday afternoon. Smith said he could move around on the leg normally. He had a patch put on Friday night, just above his right ankle on the outside of his leg, to reduce swelling. He returns to his role as setup man with Street back in at closer. Trevor Gott, who was warming up in the eighth inning on Friday, will likely resume his seventh-inning role.

July 19, 2015 Page 18 of 20 Street entered Saturday one save shy of 300 for his career. Worth noting Angels outfielder Collin Cowgill got the splint off his sprained right wrist Friday as scheduled, and has started range-of-motion activities, but he has not swung a bat yet and is likely not close to returning. Cowgill said Saturday he still plans to play this season. "We immobilized it for 14 days just to give it another week of complete rest -- so I didn't do anything really with it, just to get some strength back in it from not using it," Cowgill said of the wrist. "I'm doing everything -- the only thing I can't do is swing." Right-hander Jered Weaver threw a bullpen session Saturday afternoon and is still scheduled to throw a second simulated game on Tuesday, Scioscia said. If that goes well, a return to the Angels' rotation that coming weekend would still be in play. Scioscia reiterated that the Angels will not go to a six-man rotation but held off on any other rotation decisions. "We're going to wait," Scioscia said. "We still have some time, and we certainly have to see how Weave progresses through these workouts to see when he's ready." About a month has passed since the Angels moved Mike Trout and Albert Pujols into the third and fourth spots in the order. Scioscia said sample sizes are still small but the team continues to expect the move will create more run-scoring chances. FROM YAHOO SPORTS Daily Dime: Going with Mike Trout, Nelson Cruz and super cheap with pitchers BY DALTON DEL DON Here are 10 DFS recommendations for Sunday's slate on Yahoo, but be sure to double-check the weather and lineups before first pitch approaches. Mike Trout, OF, vs. Bos (Rodriguez), $23: You don t need me to tell you Trout is the best player in baseball, but he s posting a.325/.400/.675 line against left-handed pitchers this season, and he s affordable here if you decide to go with bargains with starting pitching (see below). There are also a lot of aces on the hill Sunday, so taking advantage of an elite hitter like Trout against a southpaw making just his 10th start of his career (although he s been solid through his first nine) makes sense. Tim Cooney, SP, vs. Mets (Niese), $25: He has a 3.31 ERA over his last three starts and has 17 strikeouts over 18.2 innings. Of course, that s a tiny sample, but the Cardinals are -135 favorites Sunday while facing a Mets team that s scored the second-fewest runs in MLB. Cooney is literally the cheapest starting pitcher during Sunday s slate (weather is a concern here, as rain is possible). Marco Estrada, SP, vs. TB (Archer), $42: He hasn t pitched as well of late and is going against Chris Archer, but Estrada owns a 3.52 ERA and 1.18 WHIP on the year and will be facing a Tampa Bay offense that has the fourth-worst OPS against RHP (.665). Going this cheap on starting pitchers will allow us to be far more aggressive on the hitters. Buster Posey, C, at Ari (Corbin), $19: He had to come in to play catcher Saturday after starting at first base when Andrew Susac left injured, but hopefully Posey will still be in Sunday s lineup hitting cleanup

July 19, 2015 Page 19 of 20 as usual. He s batting.318, and his 63 RBI would actually lead the American League, so to call him the best catcher in the game would be an understatement. Posey also faces a lefty Sunday, whom he owns a career.949 OPS against. Ryan Howard, 1B, vs. Mia (Haren), $14: He has 12 homers over 238 at bats versus RHP this season and faces Dan Haren, who s served up 10 long balls over 48.2 innings against left-handed batters. Dustin Pedroia, 2B, at LAA (Santiago), $11: He has an.845 OPS with an 11:12 K:BB ratio versus southpaws and owns a career OPS against Hector Santiago, albeit in a small sample. Pedroia s price seems cheap here relative to the rest of the second basemen and batting toward the top of Boston s lineup. Troy Tulowitzki, SS, at SD (Cashner), $16: He s typically better against lefties and obviously preferable hitting in Coors Field, but shortstop is so thin, and even in a down year, his.836 OPS leads every player at the position. Kris Bryant, 3B, at ATL (Miller), $17: This isn t the greatest matchup but more of a reflection upon the rest of the third base options Sunday and Bryant s price. Justin Upton, OF, vs. Col (Butler), $15: He hits cleanup and owns a.919 OPS at home this season. Upton is on pace to finish with 83 runs scored, 26 homers, 86 RBI and 30 steals yet there are 33 outfielders priced higher than him Sunday. Nelson Cruz, OF, at NYY (Sabathia), $17: He s slowed down in a big way after such a hot start, but Cruz is still batting a ridiculous.388/.474/.791 against lefties this year, and CC Sabathia has allowed a whopping 18 homers over 75.1 innings to go along with a.331 BAA and a 1.66 WHIP against RHB this season. Red Sox-Angels Preview BY JEFF MEZYDLO Hector Santiago didn't have the opportunity to pitch in this week's All-Star Game, but he gets another chance to show why he was worthy of being part of the festivities. The left-hander tries to win a third straight start and help the Los Angeles Angels extend their pitching dominance over the visiting Boston Red Sox on Sunday. Among baseball's biggest surprises, Santiago (6-4, 2.33 ERA) is 2-0 with a 1.00 ERA in his last four starts. The Angels (50-40) have scored 20 runs while he's allowed one in 14 innings of his two outings this month. Santiago, who joined stars Mike Trout and Albert Pujols in Cincinnati this week, didn't play Tuesday but seems more concerned with continuing his success and helping Los Angeles maintain its lead atop the AL West. "Now I know what I can do," Santiago, who went with a 3.63 ERA in 51 starts over his previous three seasons, told MLB's official website. "Before, I was kind of like an average pitcher. I think I had the stuff to be a good pitcher; I just never put it together. I never put the actual pitcher and thrower together and made it one. And now, I've kind of evolved to a pitcher."

July 19, 2015 Page 20 of 20 Santiago allowed three runs and seven hits in innings of a 6-1 loss to the Red Sox on May 24 to fall to 0-3 with a 3.63 ERA in four starts against Boston (42-49). ''Hitting is something that's a continuation of what you do the day before," Red Sox slugger David Ortiz said. "The four days off affected pretty much everybody around here, so hopefully we'll bounce back.'' Pablo Sandoval had both Boston hits off Garrett Richards in Saturday's 3-0 loss. Xander Bogaerts is 3 for 5 with a double against Santiago. He batted.404 with 10 RBIs during an 11- game hitting streak that ended Saturday. Dustin Pedroia went 0 for 8 in the first two games after missing almost a month with hamstring tightness, but is 4 for 9 with three doubles versus Santiago. Making his first appearance against the Angels, rookie Eduardo Rodriguez (5-2, 3.59) is 3-0 with an 0.69 ERA in his first four career road starts. The left-hander also entered the break 2-0 with a 2.08 ERA in his last three overall. "We continue to learn a lot about him," manager John Farrell said after Rodriguez allowed a pair of solo homers in innings of a 5-3 win over the New York Yankees on July 11. "He continues to grow each time he walks to the mound." Rodriguez will try to contain pesky leadoff hitter Kole Calhoun, who homered twice Saturday and is batting.340 with two home runs and eight RBIs in 13 career games against the Red Sox. ''We definitely have some superstars on this team, but we're not going to have them do it every night,'' said Calhoun, who is five homers shy of his career-high 17 set last year. ''It's been a good month for us so far, and we've just got to keep it going.''
