July 1, 2018 Page 3 of 14 FROM THE OC REGISTER Angels hitters and relievers pick up Tyler Skaggs to get a victory in sweltering Baltimore By Jeff Fletcher BALTIMORE In Tyler Skaggs first time back on the mound where he threw his final pitch before Tommy John surgery, he again had to come out of the game early. This time it was nothing that some cold water and air conditioning couldn t resolve. After pitching five innings in the Angels eventual 6-2 victory over the Baltimore Orioles on Saturday, Skaggs told manager Mike Scioscia that he was exhausted. Working on a sweltering day, with a firstpitch temperature of 93 degrees, Skaggs said he was spent after 79 pitches. It was definitely one of the hottest games I ve thrown in a long time, Skaggs said. Skaggs had also felt a tinge of cramping his calf when he was trying to cover first in the fifth inning. Skaggs, who earlier this month had his start pushed back because of hamstring tightness, told Scioscia how he felt. I very rarely say I m tired or anything, but today it felt like with the conditions we were in, I was pretty gassed, he said. I could have gone another one, but there s no point. I m glad my team picked me up. The bullpen did a great job today. The Angels are obviously sensitive to any pitcher suggesting he has any sort of physical problem, because they ve watched a string of pitchers go down with injuries over the past few years. Skaggs was pitching right here on July 31, 2014, when he complained of forearm tightness that ended up being a torn ulnar collateral ligament and Tommy John surgery. It took him two years to get back to the majors, but he s now two years clear of any arm problems and pitching the best of his career. He allowed one earned run on Saturday, on three straight hits to begin the game. After that, he didn t give up anything else. The bullpen then came in and held the Orioles for the rest of the game. Meanwhile, the Angels hitters eventually capitalized on some mistakes from the Orioles, who are a major-league worst The Angels won the game with five runs in the eighth, thanks to a game-tying double by Albert Pujols surrounded by a few Orioles miscues. With one out and the Angels down 2-1, Orioles righty Mychal Givins walked Mike Trout and Justin Upton. Pujols then launched a double off the wall in right-center field, tying the game and sending Upton to third.

July 1, 2018 Page 4 of 14 The Orioles intentionally walked Andrelton Simmons and brought in left-hander Tanner Scott to face left-handed hitting Luis Valbuena. The Angels instead send up righty Chris Young. Young hit a bouncer to third baseman Tim Beckham, who could have easily stepped on the bag and thrown to first to end the inning and preserve the tie. He also could have thrown home and at least prevented the go-ahead run, even if they got only one out. Instead, he stepped on third, hesitated and made a high throw to first base, barely pulling Chris Davis off the bag. Young was safe and the Angels took the lead. Ian Kinsler then beat out a chopper for an infield single, loading the bases again. Scott hit Martín Maldonado with a pitch, forcing in a run. David Fletcher then singled into center, driving in two more. Justin Anderson retired all three hitters in the eighth and Blake Parker worked the ninth to seal the victory. Angels Garrett Richards reported no issues during his rehab outing By Jeff Fletcher BALTIMORE Garrett Richards felt good during a rehab outing on Friday night, leaving the Angels to decide if they saw enough for him to take his next turn in the majors. Richards threw 63 pitches and gave up five runs in 3-1/3 innings at Class-A Inland Empire, but he reported no issues with his hamstring, Manager Mike Scioscia said Saturday. He felt good physically, Scioscia said. The second time (through the lineup) he missed some spots. They hit some balls hard off him, but all his stuff looked good. If the Angels decide that Richards doesn t need another outing in the minors, he could rejoin the rotation as soon as this week s series in Seattle. ANOTHER ONE DOWN The Angels announced that John Lamb needs to have Tommy John surgery, for the second time, making him the fourth Angels pitcher this year to require the surgery. JC Ramírez and Keynan Middleton had Tommy John surgery for the first time, and Blake Wood underwent a repair to his previous Tommy John surgery. That does not include Shohei Ohtani, who had stem-cell therapy and a platelet-rich plasma injection in an attempt to heal his damaged ulnar collateral ligament without surgery. Lamb pitched just three times for the Angels, most recently when he gave up five runs in 1-2/3 innings on Tuesday in Boston. Lamb said he felt some discomfort in his elbow and shoulder after that game, and an MRI revealed the damaged ulnar collateral ligament.

July 1, 2018 Page 5 of 14 A product of Laguna Hills High, Lamb, 27, was once a top prospect with the Kansas City Royals. He had Tommy John surgery in He was traded to the Cincinnati Reds and then underwent two back surgeries. The Angels released him last year and then re-signed him to a minor league deal just before spring training. ALSO The Angels recalled Kaleb Cowart from Triple-A and optioned Michael Hermosillo, a move that provides better coverage on the bench. With Albert Pujols moved back to designated hitter after Mike Trout moved back to center field, the Angels played Friday s game without a true infielder on the bench Jim Johnson (back) is expected to begin throwing off a mound this weekend, Scioscia said Nick Tropeano (shoulder) continue to throw, but he has not yet begun throwing off a mound, Scioscia said Saturday marked Scioscia s 3,000 th regular season game as the Angels manager. UP NEXT Angels (Deck McGuire, 0-0, 6.08) at Orioles (Kevin Gausman, 3-6, 4.20), Sunday, 10 a.m. PT, Fox Sports West, KLAA (830 AM). Shohei Ohtani hits in simulated game, moving closer to rejoining Angels lineup By Jeff Fletcher BALTIMORE Shohei Ohtani took part in a simulated game on Saturday at Angel Stadium, bringing his return to the Angels lineup closer. Although the Angels have not given a timeline for Ohtani, presumably a simulated game would indicate he s within a week of returning, barring a setback. Ohtani had 10 at-bats against Angels minor league pitchers, Scioscia said, and he ran the bases. It all went well, he said. It s definitely a positive step for him. Ohtani was cleared to resume batting practice on Thursday, three weeks after he underwent stem-cell therapy and received a platelet-rich plasma injection to heal a damaged ulnar collateral ligament. Although the ligament hasn t healed enough for Ohtani to pitch, the Angels are hoping to soon have him back in the lineup as a hitter. The status of his rehab as a pitcher will be updated in three weeks. General manager Billy Eppler said on Thursday that Ohtani would not need to see any live game action in the minors, because he doesn t need to play in the field.

July 1, 2018 Page 6 of 14 The Angels conclude their series in Baltimore with a day game on Sunday, followed by an off day and the start of a three-game series in Seattle on Tuesday. FROM THE LOS ANGELES TIMES An exhausted Tyler Skaggs exits after five innings, Angels rally to defeat Orioles 6-2 By Jeff Miller This time, finally, the injury news for the Angels was there was no injury. Tyler Skaggs was gassed, that s all, leaving Saturday after five innings against Baltimore in a game the Angels came back to win 6-2. The left-hander has had only two shorter starts in 2018, the 79 pitches Skaggs threw his season low. He recently missed a turn because of a hamstring issue and also was involved in an awkward-looking play at first base immediately before exiting. Given all the injuries the Angels have experienced 14 players are on the disabled list it was easy to conclude that something was now wrong with the hottest pitcher they have going. Turns out, Skaggs was just too hot, the first-pitch temperature at Camden Yards announced as 93 degrees. I told him, I very rarely come out and say this, but I m exhausted, Skaggs said of his in-game confession to manager Mike Scioscia and pitching coach Charles Nagy. I said I could go another inning. He was like, Let s shut it down. Asked the last time he admitted he should come out of a game, Skaggs said it was in this same stadium, four years ago. On July 31, 2014, he left in the fifth inning against the Orioles after suffering an injury to his ulnar collateral ligament and wouldn t pitch again for the Angels for nearly two years. This was definitely one of the hottest games I ve thrown in a long time, Skaggs said. The first inning didn t help, either. I exerted a lot of energy in the first inning. The first three batters he faced had singles and the next 17 he faced had no hits at all. Skaggs did have a walk and an error in there, along with an error by first baseman Luis Valbuena. Otherwise, he didn t give up another hit until Manny Machado s single that actually ended the fifth when the ball struck baserunner Adam Jones.

July 1, 2018 Page 7 of 14 After Skaggs departed, relievers Noe Ramirez, Jose Alvarez, Justin Anderson and Blake Parker assembled four scoreless innings and the Angels won with a five-run eighth. The game-deciding rally was a function of both teams appearing to try to score runs for the Angels. With the Orioles leading 2-1, Baltimore reliever Mychal Givens ignited the uprising by walking Mike Trout and Justin Upton back to back with one out. Albert Pujols followed with an RBI double to make it 2-2. It was the 632 nd double for Pujols, tying him with David Ortiz for 10 th all time. He is the only player whose name appears on the top-10 lists of career homers and doubles. The Orioles decided to intentionally walk Andrelton Simmons to load the bases and set up a potential double play. Following that script, pinch-hitter Chris Young sent a chopper straight to third baseman Tim Beckham, who tried to step on the bag and throw to first to finish the inning. Only Beckham struggled with his footing around third and then double-pumped before firing across the diamond, where his relay pulled first baseman Chris Davis off the bag. Young was safe, Upton scored and the Angels took the lead for the first time and for good. What came next was a single by Ian Kinsler, an RBI hit by pitch by Martin Maldonado and a two-run single by David Fletcher. In the inning, the Angels sent their entire lineup to the plate and went from one run down to four runs up and everyone received a timely reminder of why Baltimore has the worst record in baseball. Still, this game attracted a crowd of 38,838, many of whom no doubt attended for the free Oriolesthemed Hawaiian shirt giveaway. By the end, the crowd had grown restless and some people were booing. Baltimore is 23 rd in baseball in attendance and probably won t have as many as 38,838 again for awhile not after this one unless the team gives away Orioles-theme Hawaiian pants. Angels tag Deck McGuire as 12 th starting pitcher this season By Jeff Miller For starters, there s the latest starter s name: Deck? My real name is William, Deck McGuire said. Nobody calls me William.

July 1, 2018 Page 8 of 14 He has been Deck for as long as he can remember, Deck being McGuire s middle name and his mother s maiden name. On Sunday, he ll become the 12 th pitcher to start a game for the Angels. As just one comparison, American League West-leading Houston has used the same five starters all season. Anytime you get to make a start, it s awesome, said McGuire, whose first two appearances for the Angels have come in relief. I want to compete every pitch and keep going until someone takes the ball from me. A 2010 first-round pick of Toronto, the right-hander has started extensively in the minors. He started twice for Cincinnati last year, with his other 10 career big league appearances coming in relief. McGuire, 29, was acquired June 19 in a trade with Texas. He s in the rotation this time around because of all the injuries, the Angels pressed into a situation where they re now turning to Decks on hand. Having grown up a few hours away in Virginia, McGuire once toured Camden Yards as a kid but never had attended a game here until this series. His previous appearance was four innings of relief Tuesday in Fenway Park, an experience McGuire called a dream come true, really. Being drafted by the Blue Jays, he said, I saw myself in the American League East a little sooner. Ohtani hits in simulated game Shohei Ohtani took his latest step forward by getting 10 at-bats in a simulated game in Anaheim. He hit and ran the bases, and manager Mike Scioscia said everything went well. If Ohtani continues to progress, he could rejoin the Angels in Seattle, where they open a three-game series Tuesday. He s coming back as a designated hitter as the Angels continue to monitor the Grade 2 sprain of his right ulnar collateral ligament. His next reevaluation with Dr. Steve Yoon is set for the third week of July. Getting him back would be huge, second baseman Ian Kinsler said. Putting a bat like that in the middle of your lineup helps everyone out. Lamb to have elbow surgery John Lamb became the fifth Angels pitcher this season to suffer a damaged UCL. His condition was diagnosed after his start Tuesday. He ll have elbow-ligament replacement surgery, which typically requires 14 to 16 months of recovery. The Angels also announced that third baseman Zack Cozart (shoulder) and reliever Jake Jewell (fibula) had successful surgeries. Both also are out for the season.

July 1, 2018 Page 9 of 14 Richards nearing return Even though he struggled with his command and gave up five runs Friday in a single-a game, Garrett Richards remains on track to return to the rotation, perhaps as early as Wednesday against the Mariners. His stuff looked good, Scioscia said. I think we accomplished what we need to with Garrett. Short hop Kaleb Cowart was promoted from triple-a Salt Lake and Michael Hermosillo was optioned down. Cowart finished the game Saturday playing first base. Angels erupt for 5 in 8 th to stun Orioles FROM ANGELS.COM Pujols game-tying hit ties Ortiz for 10 th place on all-time doubles list By Jeff Seidel BALTIMORE-- The Angels came into Saturday's game against the Orioles with a 2-32 record when trailing after seven innings, but they improved on that statistic. Albert Pujols tied the game with a double, pinch-hitter Chris Young added a go-ahead fielder's choice and David Fletcher delivered a two-run single as the Angels scored five runs in the eighth inning to pull out a 6-2 victory at Oriole Park. The Angels had missed on some scoring chances earlier, not being able to come through with hits when needed. Still, everything changed in the eighth, when they turned a 2-1 deficit into a 6-2 lead. "We had some big hits there; I think the biggest hit in the inning was Albert," manager Mike Scioscia said. "It was good clutch hitting in that inning. I think we had opportunities during the game that could have came back to haunt us, but we had a good eighth inning and got the lead." The Angels' first run came on Andrelton Simmons' fourth-inning single, and they trailed for the first seven innings before things turned around in the eighth against Orioles reliever Mychal Givens (0-6) and, later, Tanner Scott. Mike Trout and Justin Upton drew back-to-back one-out walks before Pujols sent a drive to the rightcenter-field wall for an RBI double. Scott replaced Givens, who induced the run-scoring fielder's choice from Young before hitting Martin Maldonado with the bases loaded to give Los Angeles a 4-2 lead. Fletcher followed with his two-run single to center. Justin Anderson (2-2) got the win in relief.

July 1, 2018 Page 10 of 14 "Whenever you can grind out runs late in the game to come back and win, it's exciting," Fletcher said. " It's definitely something to give us confidence, coming back late in the game like that." Los Angeles starter Tyler Skaggs allowed three straight singles to start the game and conceded two runs (one earned) in the first inning, but he didn't allow another run through five good innings, and he left trailing, 2-1, after throwing 79 pitches and allowing four hits with six strikeouts. Scioscia said that Skaggs was "gassed" on the humid afternoon -- the game-time temperature was listed at 93 degrees. "I was just tired," Skaggs said. "I told [Scioscia], 'I very rarely come out and say this, but I'm exhausted.' I said, 'I could go another inning,' and he was like, 'We'll shut it down. You've thrown a great game today.'" The bullpen kept the Angels in place for their late-inning rally, as four pitchers combined to allow just two hits and no runs over the final four innings. Blake Parker worked around a one-out single to pitch a scoreless ninth. The Orioles now have dropped seven straight games and 17 of their last 18 at home. SOUND SMART Pujols' big double in the eighth was the 632nd of his career. That moved him into 10th place on the alltime list, tying him with David Ortiz. Pujols also is the only player to make the top 10 for both homers and doubles. HE SAID IT "It was definitely one of the hottest games I've thrown in a long time. The first inning didn't help either, because I got into trouble early. I exerted a lot of energy in the first innings." -- Skaggs, who threw 25 pitches in that first inning on a day when the heat index was approaching 100 degrees UP NEXT Deck McGuire (0-0, 6.08 ERA) will make his first start this season and his seventh appearance overall when he goes for the Angels in Sunday's 10:05 a.m. PT series finale with Baltimore at Camden Yards. He'll be pitching against Kevin Gausman (3-6, 4.20), who has not won in his past eight starts, even though the right-hander hasn't pitched badly. Angels Lamb to have TJ surgery on left elbow Ohtani takes BP, plays in simulated game; Richards makes first rehab start By Daniel Kramer and Jeff Seidel Left-hander John Lamb has become the latest Angel to require Tommy John surgery, the club announced on Saturday.

July 1, 2018 Page 11 of 14 Lamb, 27, was placed on the disabled list on Wednesday with left elbow inflammation, one day after making a start against the Red Sox in Boston in which he gave up five runs (three earned) on six hits and two walks over 1 2/3 innings. It was just his third start with the big league club after being called up on June 16. An MRI revealed the torn ulnar collateral ligament. Dr. Neal ElAttrache will perform the procedure in Los Angeles. Lamb, who before this month hadn't appeared in the Majors since July 2016 with the Reds, had a resurgence of sorts with Triple-A Salt Lake over 13 starts that, coupled with the Angels' rotation attrition, created an opportunity at the Major League level. The Angels also announced that right-hander Jake Jewell underwent successful left ankle surgery on Friday and will be out for the remainder of the season. Third baseman Zack Cozart also underwent a successful repair of his left labrum tear, and is expected back in six to eight months. Ohtani faces pitchers Shohei Ohtani took batting practice and participated in a simulated game on Saturday at Angel Stadium. Ohtani, who is solely focused on offense while he returns from a right UCL sprain, had 10 at-bats in the simulated game and ran in the bases. Ohtani was placed on the disabled list on June 8 (retroactive to June 7), and there's no official timetable for his return, but the Angels are hoping he could return as a batter before the All-Star Game. "[We] evaluate every day," manager Mike Scioscia. Richards makes rehab start Pitcher Garrett Richards, who's on the DL retroactive to June 14 with a left hamstring strain, threw 3 1/3 innings in his first rehab start with Class A Advanced Inland Empire on Friday. Richards gave up five runs on seven hits and took the loss in a game against Rancho Cucamonga. Scioscia said the Angels have to wait and see how the right-hander rebounds. "Felt good physically," Scioscia said. "All his stuff looked good. Just lost some of his command as the outing went on, but physically he felt good." Worth noting The Angels optioned outfielder Michael Hermosillo to Triple-A Salt Lake and recalled infielder Kaleb Cowart from the same team. Scioscia said that Cowart's versatility gives them more ways to do more things later in the game. Saturday marked Scioscia's 3,000th game as the Angels' manager. He's the sixth manager in Major League history to reach that milestone with one team, but the skipper did not even realize he was at that number. "It's 3,000, one game at a time," he said with a smile.

July 1, 2018 Page 12 of youngsters attend clinic at Angel Stadium By Austin Laymance ANAHEIM -- While Angels superstar Mike Trout was busy preparing for a game on the other side of the country, his center-field perch at Angel Stadium was occupied by kids emulating his highlight-reel catches. With the Angels in Baltimore to play the Orioles on Saturday, the playing field at Angel Stadium was filled with young boys and girls taking part in the Legends For Youth Baseball Clinic, which is put on by Major League Baseball and the MLB Players Alumni Association. Former big leaguers Tarrik Brock, Shawn Chacon, Mike Gallo, Jeff Liefer, Calvin Pickering and Anthony Slama coached the two-hour clinic, which focused on fundamental baseball skills -- both physical and mental. It was a fulfilling experience for the 75 youth in attendance, as well as the retired players. "The most important thing is, I get to take the game that I love and pass it along in its purest form and just see their excitement [about] being in a big league stadium -- on the field and being in the outfield making catches just like Mike Trout does," said Brock, who coaches in the Dodgers organization. "That was the cool thing, just to see that excitement. As a parent, you just want to see your kids grow, learn, have fun and just enjoy themselves." The kids were split into six groups and rotated around the field to different stations, where they were instructed on pitching, throwing, infield defense, outfield defense, hitting and baserunning. The energy in the stadium was palpable. It was easy to tell the kids were thrilled to run around on a Major League field. "I think these kids realize how lucky they are to come to a big league field," said Gallo, who pitched for the Astros from "I didn't even sniff a big league field and get on the field until I was in the big leagues. Just to get out here and get the experience is amazing. It's great for the game of baseball. It keeps the interest sparked up. There's so many competitive things to do out there. But baseball is a really good skill sport -- and it helps not only teach you life skills, it teaches you physical skills, as well." The clinic, which is part of MLB's Play Ball initiative, was unlike anything the coaching staff experienced when they were growing up. After two hours of baseball, the kids got to hang out in the Angels' dugout and get autographs from their instructors. A group of boys beamed when Angels pitcher Nick Tropeano emerged to take the field to continue his throwing program as he rehabs his right shoulder injury. "That's Nick Tropeano," the boys screamed. After the clinic was over and the autograph session was complete, the kids received plastic red bats and plastic baseballs to take home. Some wasted no time putting their new toys to use. Suddenly, a baseball game was in full swing on a patch of grass outside the left-field pavilion.

July 1, 2018 Page 13 of 14 "The one thing that you want to try and instill in these kids is, the game of baseball is fun," Gallo said. FROM THE ASSOCIATED PRESS Pujols, Angels use 5-run 8 th inning to rally past O s 6-2 BALTIMORE (AP) On a steamy day that proved too daunting for Angels starting pitcher Tyler Skaggs, 38-year-old Albert Pujols coolly delivered the game s pivotal hit. Pujols RBI double highlighted a five-run eighth inning, and Los Angeles beat the Orioles 6-2 Saturday to extend Baltimore s latest losing streak to seven games. Gametime temperature was 93, and the humidity was unforgiving. Sweating profusely, Skaggs asked out after using 79 pitches to get through five innings. It s definitely one of the hottest games I ve thrown in a long time, Skaggs said. I was just tired. I told (manager Mike Scioscia) I rarely come out and say this, but I m exhausted. Skaggs added: I probably could have gone another inning, but there was no point. My team picked me up. Playing their 3,000th game under Scioscia, the Angels trailed 2-1 before using three hits, three walks and a hit batter to take control against the free-falling Orioles. After Mychal Givens (0-6) issued a pair of one-out walks, Pujols tied it with his 632nd career double, a drive that handcuffed right fielder Danny Valencia. The hit tied David Ortiz for 10th place on the all-time list and tied the game. An intentional walk followed, and the go-ahead run scored when Chris Young hit into a force play at third base. Tanner Scott hit Martin Maldonado with a pitch to force in a run, and David Fletcher capped the uprising with a two-run single. It was good clutch-hitting that inning, Scioscia said. I think the biggest hit there was Albert. The Angels lost six straight before coming to Baltimore, and now they appear to have their mojo back. Whenever you can grind out runs late in the game to come back and win, it s exciting, Fletcher said. It s definitely something to give us confidence. Justin Anderson (2-2) pitched 1 1/3 innings to earn the win. The Orioles shoddy play in the eighth inning explains why Baltimore owns the worst record in the majors. Baltimore has five losing streaks of at least six games, is 0-15 against the AL West and has lost 17 of 18 at home.

July 1, 2018 Page 14 of 14 Afterward, manager Buck Showalter was straining to find the positive aspect of another dreadful defeat. When you only score two runs again you re going to have to pitch real well, which we really did for seven innings, he said. So, I ll take that out of it. Baltimore s Andrew Cashner threw 105 pitches. He gave up one run in six innings and left with the lead, but now has gone six straight starts without a victory. To say I m not frustrated, I d be lying, but for me, wins and losses are out of my control, the righthander said. MILESTONE Scioscia is the sixth manager in major league history to manage 3,000 games with one team. You don t think about it, Scioscia said about his longevity. It s 3,000, one game at a time. TAKE A SEAT Struggling Orioles 2B Jonathan Schoop (.197) was given the day off, and will likely be rested Sunday before Monday s off day. Showalter said he wanted the 2017 All-Star to reset. TRAINING ROOM Angels: RHP/DH Shohei Ohtani, who has a Grade 2 sprain of the ulnar collateral ligament of his right elbow, batted in a simulated game Saturday and did not experience any setbacks, Scioscia said. The team hopes Ohtani can avoid Tommy John surgery.. LHP John Lamb has a torn ulnar collateral ligament and will undergo surgery in Los Angeles.. RHP Jake Jewell will be out at least six months after undergoing right ankle surgery Friday.. RHP Garrett Richards (hamstring) allowed five runs over 3 1/3 innings in a rehab start Friday with High-A Inland Empire. He lost some of his command as the outing went on, but physically he felt great, Scioscia said. Orioles: RHP Darren O Day opted for surgery to repair a left hamstring strain, ending his season.... RHP Chris Tillman (back) was scheduled to make his third rehab start, this time with Triple-A Norfolk, on Saturday. UP NEXT Angels: RHP Deck McGuire (0-0, 6.08 ERA) makes his third major league start in the series finale Sunday. Orioles: RHP Kevin Gausman (3-6, 4.20 ERA) lost his last four decisions and has not completed seven innings in any of his last eight starts.
