This tandem was also honored Monday with spots on the first-ever NCBWA Freshmen All-America team. Bates was a first-team selection, while Harvey was a second-team choice. WHITE OUT: ACC Pitcher of the Alex White has logged three of his top career outings in his last three starts, as he has struck out 25 and allowed just 14 hits over his last 23 innings against Virginia, UNC Wilmington and Coastal Carolina. He fired his first career complete game in the regional win over UNCW and has gone at least seven innings in three straight starts for the first time in his career. AGAINST THE TOURNAMENT FIELD: UNC built its tournament resume with a tough regular season schedule and owns an 18-9 mark against 11 opponents that reached the 64-team field: Charlotte (2-0), Coastal Carolina (2-1), Elon (0-1), Florida State (2-2), Georgia Tech (2-1), Miami (2-1), Mount St. Mary s (1-0), NC State (1-1), St. John s (2-0), UNC Wilmington (2-0) and Virginia (2-2). But the May 19 week marked the first time in program history that Carolina has been the consensus top-ranked team in the nation. UNC was ranked No. 1 by one of the four major polls for five weeks in 2006 and by Baseball America for four weeks last season. Carolina owns a record when ranked No. 1. SIX TAR HEELS NAMED ALL-ACC: Led by Atlantic Coast Conference Pitcher of the Year Alex White, North Carolina had six individuals earn spots on the league s all-conference teams, which were announced May 19. White was joined on the first team by outfielder Tim Fedroff, while first baseman Dustin Ackley, catcher Tim Federowicz, second baseman Kyle Seager and relief pitcher Rob Wooten garnered second-team honors. EXTRA-BASE HIT MARKS TO FALL: The deep gaps at Cary s USA Baseball National Training Complex have helped the Tar Heels hone in on a pair of extra-base hit records. Carolina already has 166 doubles and broke the school record during the NCAA Cary Regional. The Tar Heels have also tallied 23 triples for the second straight season and need just one more to tie the record of 24 set back in FOR 10 IN 2008: Carolina went in its Atlantic Coast Conference weekend series to rank as the lone league school to not drop an ACC series this year. This year marked the first time that the Tar Heels accomplished this feat since the league went to the three-game set format in Carolina has not lost an ACC series in its last 13 chances dating to last season. UNC split its two-game set with NC State for the lone series that it did not win outright. SWINGING IT DOWN THE STRETCH: Since breaking eight days for final exams in early May, the Tar Heels have hit.329 over a 17-game stretch that included series wins at Virginia and Miami, the NCAA Cary Regional and the Super Regional against Coastal Carolina. Carolina has four players batting more than.360 over this run, including Dustin Ackley (.464), Tim Fedroff (.406), Garrett Gore (.370), and Tim Federowicz (.364). HEELS MATCH RECORD MARKS: With a overall record and a 22-7 mark in ACC action, the Tar Heels matched school records for regular-season wins and conference victories. Carolina has posted 45 regular season wins in each of the last three seasons, and its 22 league wins equaled the 2006 squad. RECORD RUN IN THE ACC: The Tar Heels have posted a (.730) record in ACC action over the last three years and have registered the top three single-season ACC win totals in school history in the process. The 65 league wins over the last three years are one more than Florida State s 64 wins to top the league. UNC is also the only team to top the 20-win mark in each of the last three seasons. 40 ONCE AGAIN: With the May 7 win over North Florida, Carolina reached the 40-win mark for the seventh straight season, extending a school record. The Tar Heels, who have won 40 games in nine of the 10 seasons under Mike Fox, needed just 48 games to post 40 victories, matching the 2006 team as the second-quickest to 40 in school history. The 1983 team opened the year UNC was the third team in the nation to reach 40 wins this year, trailing only Texas A&M and Florida State. UNC SPORTS NATION S TOP STAFF: Pitching has been the backbone of this year s Carolina team, and the Tar Heels rank as the national leader in earned run average (2.83), strikeouts per nine innings (10.1), fewest hits allowed per nine innings (7.47) and opponent batting average (.227). This year s staff is extremely balanced with 12 pitchers having made 13 or more appearances and 11 hurlers with ERAs of 3.00 or better. SUPER SOPHOMORES: Offensively, Carolina has been carried by its All-America sophomore trio of Dustin Ackley, Tim Fedroff and Kyle Seager, who have ranked among the ACC s top hitters all season long. This group is batting a collective.387 on the season with 68 doubles, 28 home runs, 192 RBI and 36 stolen bases. Ackley owns the top career average in school history at.405, while Fedroff ranks fourth at.374. RECORD VS. THE RANKED: With a 13-6 mark against teams ranked in one of the four major polls this season, the Tar Heels have improved their record over the last three seasons to against nationally ranked opponents. As Carolina has made a jump on the national scene over the past two years, its record versus the nation s best has vastly improved. Carolina s Record Against Ranked Opponents Year Record NCAA Finish Regionals CWS Finalist CWS Finalist ??? PITCHING BETTERING 2006 & 2007: Despite losing a pair of first-round picks, the program s all-time winningest pitcher and an All-America closer off the last two teams, Carolina s pitching staff has not missed a beat this season and leads the nation with a 2.83 earned

7 run average and a school-record 640 strikeouts through 63 games. This ERA is nearly half a run better than the 3.24 mark at this point in the season last year. The 2006 staff logged a 3.30 ERA through 63 games. TOPS IN THE NATION OVER : While UNC s 51 wins this season are certainly impressive, its 162 victories over the last three years lead the country. Carolina and Rice are the only teams in the country to win at least 50 games in each of the last two seasons. Total Wins Team Total North Carolina Rice Florida State Wichita State SEAGER CLEANING UP: With classmates Tim Fedroff (.464 OBP) and Dustin Ackley (.500 OBP) usually on base in front of him, sophomore second baseman Kyle Seager has made the most of his RBI opportunities. After driving in 30 runs all last season, Seager has more than doubled his RBI output this season with 73 runs driven in to rank third in the ACC. He is currently tied for fifth on the UNC singleseason list. STRIKEOUT SUCCESS: The probable NCAA leader in strikeouts per nine innings at 10.1 this week, Carolina has tallied 33 doubledigit strikeout games this season, including 20 in the last 37 outings. With an NCAA-best 640 Ks, the Tar Heels needed just 54 games to break the previous school record of 543 strikeouts set in 69 games in FLACK HUNTING HISTORY: Senior third baseman Chad Flack has set school records for career hits, at-bats and games played over the last few weeks and has a chance to set a couple of more records before the end of the season. Fedroff, who was 4-for-4 with two walks, three runs and three RBI, tripled in the first, doubled in the second and belted a two-run homer in the five-run fourth inning. After a sixth-inning walk, the Flagtown, N.J., product beat out an infield single in the eighth to complete the cycle. Fedroff also hit for the cycle once in high school. THE RUNNIN HEELS: With home runs at a premium at the USA Baseball Complex, the Tar Heels have placed more of an emphasis on the running game in So far so good, as they have already surpassed their stolen base total from 2007 (47 in 73 games) with 66 steals in 63 games this season. Dustin Ackley leads the way with 18 steals. DEFENSE DICTATES SUCCESS: In most of their 12 losses this season, sloppy defensive play has doomed the Tar Heels. Carolina committed at least three errors in five of the 12 losses and has allowed a combined 34 unearned runs in these 12 games. When committing one error or less, Carolina is 42-4, but the Tar Heels are 9-8 when making more than two miscues. MORAN MOWS EM DOWN: After pitching just eight innings a year ago, sophomore lefty Brian Moran has developed into a key reliever for the Tar Heels thanks to his exceptional control. The Rye, N.Y., product owns a 67-to-15 strikeout-to-walk ratio on the year. Moran sports a 1.99 ERA in 45 1/3 innings and more importantly has allowed just six of 44 inherited runners to score. BATES BACK IN A BIG WAY: Redshirt freshman right-hander Colin Bates is a fixture in the bullpen this season after missing all of last year. The Naperville, Ill., native had thoracic outlet decompression surgery due to a blood clot in his right shoulder in November 2006 and spent last season rehabbing. Bates has been one of the top options out of the bullpen with a 6-1 record and a 2.98 ERA in 51 1/3 innings. He has 53 strikeouts against just 17 walks and has allowed just eight of 30 inherited runners to cross the plate. Bates earned the win in the decisive game three of the Miami series. A FIXTURE IN THE RANKINGS: Carolina s ascent to the top of the college baseball world is evidenced by a number of facts and figures but one of note is the 102 consecutive weeks that the Tar Heels have been ranked in the top 25 of one of the four major college baseball polls. Carolina was last left on the outside of the national rankings on May 26, 2003, but entered the polls following the regional win at Mississippi State. The Tar Heels have been included in the top 10 of at least one poll for the last 59 weeks and in the top five in each of the last 41 weeks. FOX REACHES 400: Tenth-year head coach Mike Fox reached the 400-win mark at Carolina Feb. 24 with a win over Florida Atlantic. Only two other UNC coaches have reached this plateau - Mike Roberts (780) and Walter Rabb 2008 NORTH CAROLINA BASEBALL game notes (540). Fox owns a record in 24 years at Carolina and North Carolina Wesleyan and is at UNC. BUILDING A BETTER BOSH: Carolina played its 36 home games in 2008 at Cary s USA Baseball National Training Complex while Boshamer Stadium undergoes an estimated $25.5 million renovation. The Tar Heels will be back on campus in time for the 2009 season. In the meantime, they wmake the roughly 25-minute commute to the Cary facility for games and practice in TAR HEELS SIGN 10: Carolina has continued its success on the recruiting trail by signing a 10-man class last November that will join the program next fall in time for the 2009 season.
