UNC Hosts Hokies To Wrap Up ACC Slate Winners of eight straight at home, North Carolina concludes their regular season and ACC slate hosting Virginia Tech this weekend. Games are slated for Thursday at 6 p.m., Friday at 7 p.m. and Saturday at 2 p.m. The Tar Heel Sports Network will broadcast every game this weekend. Carolina All-Access will stream all three games this weekend live via TarHeelBlue.com. National Rankings UNC is rated No. 26 in the latest NCBWA poll. Dating to the 2003 season, Carolina has been ranked in the top 30 of one of the four major polls for 135 straight weeks. The Tar Heels streak of 79 consecutive weeks in the top-10 was snapped this preseason. Virginia Tech is ranked in all four major polls and is rated No. 12 by Baseball America. North Carolina-Virginia Tech Series The Tar Heels have won 10 of their 11 last meetings against the Hokies, including six straight. Junior Matt Harvey notches 9.41 strikeouts per nine innings. Carolina swept two meetings at Virginia Tech last season in a rain-shortened series. UNC took both contests by a combined margin of 12 runs. The Tar Heels are 11-1 under Mike Fox against Virginia Tech, which includes a perfect 6-0 mark at Boshamer Stadium. The Hokies last defeated UNC at home in March of Carolina leads the all-time series against Virginia Tech , which dates to Scouting the Tar Heels UNC sports a.308 team batting average, 4.24 staff ERA and.969 fielding percentage. Their midweek contest against Davidson was rained out. The Hokies are enjoying their most successful season in over a decade and under head coach Pete Hughes. Virginia Tech features a balanced attack with a.326 team batting average, 4.49 staff ERA and.970 fielding percentage. The Hokies rank fourth in the competitive Coastal Division of the ACC and fifth amongst the league s 12 teams. Virginia Tech posts a 7-5 mark against Coastal Division teams entering their threegame set against Coastal foe North Carolina. Virginia Tech is 7-2 over their last nine conference games and has dropped just two league series all year. The Hokies rank fourth in the ACC in both team pitching and batting through 27 conference games. 3 Senior Leaders Wrap Up Careers Three Tar Heel veterans will play their final regular season games at Boshamer Stadium this weekend. Junior Colin Bates joins seniors Mike Cavasinni and Ryan Graepel for senior day Saturday May 22 at 2 p.m. Bates, a native of Naperville, Ill., has been a valuable and versatile performer on the mound for the Tar Heels in his career. Bates posts a career 3.43 ERA in 79 games, including six starts. The former Freshman All-America, who endured thoracic outlet decompression surgery in 2006 due to a blood clot in his shoulder, finishing second in the ACC and eighth nationally in appearances helping lead Carolina to Omaha in Bates graduated May 9, with a Kenan-Flager bachelor s degree in business administration. Cavasinni, a native of Huntersville, N.C., has been an inspirational clubhouse leader during the most successful run in Tar Heel history. Mike, who has been a part of all four trips to the College World Series and the 2007 ACC title squad, is a career.286 hitter with five triple and 39 stolen bases in 217 games. He registered a career-best five hits in Super Regional win over Alabama to help earn UNC s first trip to Omaha since Cavasinni preserved through two major injuries, a torn ACL and eye injury, to become the ultimate senior leader in his final season. Cavasinni graduated May 9, with a bachelor s degree in exercise and sports science. Graepel, a native of Greenville, N.C., has been an instrumental part of three of Carolina s four College World Series appearances. Graepel emerged as the Tar Heels starting shortstop during the 2008 NCAA Tournament, earning the nod in the final 10 games due to outstanding glove work and timely hitting. He batted.294 with 10 runs and a pair of RBI during Carolina s 2008 College World Series run. This season, he is batting a career-best.313 with 14 doubles and a career-high five home runs. Graepel plans to graduate in December with a bachelor s degree in management of society. RPI Watch - May 18th The RPI measures a team s wins and losses, while taking into account their strength of schedule. The RPI is often used as a measuring stick for the upcoming NCAA Tournament. The Tar Heels currently rank 30th in the latest RPI ratings. Carolina is one of seven ACC teams ranked in the top 30. Four league teams are rated in the top-12. The top eight conference teams will compete in the round-robin tournament for an automatic bid into the NCAA Tournament. The Tar Heels are currently in ninth place with three league games remaining. Carolina owns the tiebreaker with eighth place NC State by virtue of a series victory over the Wolfpack earlier this season. The team s previous goal was $3500 or roughly $100 per player. For every $100 one member of the Tar Heels team would shave his head, if more money was raised talk would turn to persuading the coaches to do so. UNC now owns a team full of bald players and nearly an entire bald coaching staff, thanks to their efforts. The Tar Heels nearly doubled their goal in just two short weeks of fund-raising. The Diamond Heels will donate all the proceeds in honor of Ashton Miller, a close friend to the program who recently passed away after a bout with cancer. Ackley Named To CWS Legends Team Former North Carolina great Dustin Ackley was one of 28 players named to the College World Series Legends Team. Carolina s career leader in average, hits, runs and total bases, the Walnut Cove, N.C., native is the first player to ever be named to three consecutive All-CWS teams and set the CWS career record with 28 base hits in just 15 games. Ackley earned consensus first-team All-America in 2009 and is the first consensus first-team All-America at UNC since Andrew Miller in He wrapped up the 2009 College World Series on a 22-game NCAA Tournament hitting streak. Ackley, who started all 66 games this season and all 207 in his career, was the No. 2 overall pick in this month s Major League Baseball First-Year Player Draft by Seattle. Fox Emerges As Active Leader Carolina head coach Mike Fox earned his 1,000th career win March 4, 2009 and owns a 1, record entering. Among active coaches, he enters with the highest winning percentage (.748) and ninth in overall victories. 8 North Carolina Baseball Starting Pitcher Notes #43 Matt Harvey Junior, RHP Mystic, Conn. Fitch Thursday s start against Virginia Tech will be the 42nd of Harvey s career and his 53rd career appearance. He was the Tar Heels Sunday starter for the majority of last two seasons. Harvey is 1-0 in two career appearances against Virginia Tech. The junior has struck out 11 in 10.1 innings en route to registering a win as a freshman and his first career save as a sophomore. Harvey earned National Pitcher of the Week (Collegiate Baseball), ACC Pitcher of the Week and Tar Heel of the Week for his complete-game 15 strikeout performance at Clemson April 23. Harvey earned ACC Pitcher of the Week and Tar Heel of the Week March 8 for his dominating eight-shutout inning performance against Michigan. The Mystic, Conn., earned another quality performance against Florida State. The junior matched his season-high with 11 strikeouts while hurling seven shutout innings in a no decision. The Mystic, Conn., native has been at the top of his game against ranked opponents and will face his seventh ranked opponent Friday in No. 1 Virginia. The freshman posts a 2-2 record in six career starts. Munnelly is a solid 1-1 over his last three starts. The freshman tossed a career-best 6.2 innings and registered a career-high eight strikeouts May 4 against Wake Forest. Munnelly kept No. 1 UVA off balance for four innings, but allowed five home runs all via the long ball in the fifth and sixth frames. 10 North Carolina Baseball Starting Pitcher Notes #17 Patrick Johnson Junior, RHP Conover, N.C. St. Stephen s Saturday s start versus Virginia Tech will be the 27th of Johnson s career and his 50th career appearance. He was the Tar Heels mid-week starter for the majority of last two seasons. The junior has yet to pitch against Virginia Tech in his career. Johnson has worked at least six innings in three of his last four starts, including a solid outing last week at No. 1 Virginia. Johnson turned in a career-performance April 25, posting a 4-3 win at Clemson. The junior pitched a career-best 8.1 innings and nearly pitched Carolina s second complete-game in three days. Johnson allowed all three runs in the first two innings, but was efficient down the stretch to secure a 4-3 win.
