4 PREVIEWING THE TAR HEELS In the midst of one of the most successful periods in the history of the North Carolina baseball program, the 2003 Tar Heels look to build on an exciting 2002 season that saw the team make its fourth NCAA Tournament appearance in the last five years, set nine new team batting records and have three players earn All- America honors for just the second time in school history. Throw in a threegame sweep of the top-ranked Florida State Seminoles, record-setting crowds at Boshamer Stadium and the highest Atlantic Coast Conference finish in more than a decade and there s no question that 2002 was a memorable year to build upon. But fifth-year head coach Mike Fox knows his team has its work cut out for it to continue its rise in the fiercely competitive ACC, and it will take a different brand of baseball in 2003 for the Tar Heels to enjoy success. Gone are All- Americas Russ Adams, Adam Greenberg and Chris Maples veterans who combined to hit.351 with 47 home runs, 191 RBIs and 96 stolen bases last year. One year after shattering team records in batting average, hits, home runs and RBIs just to name a few Carolina will look to some of the most talented pitchers in the league to set a few records of their own and redefine the personality of the team as one built first around pitching and defense. Junior pitchers Daniel Moore, Scott Manshack, Whitley Benson and Michael Gross, along with sophomore Garry Bakker headline Carolina s talented pitching staff and all enter the season with the potential to have breakout years. Add to that several talented freshman, and the Tar Heels have the makings of a powerhouse staff. Meanwhile, senior captain Sean Farrell, who quietly put together an outstanding 2002 season (.354, 73 RBIs, 14 home runs), looks to carry the load on offense. A three-year starter with 153 RBIs and 26 home runs since 2000, Farrell is joined by C/1B Ryan Blake and SS Chad Prosser as the only seniors on the team. While the Tar Heels have holes to fill in the outfield, Blake, Prosser and sophomore 2B Greg Mangum provide defensive stability up the middle. Catcher Chris Iannetta and 1B Jeremy Cleveland could also have big seasons and will be counted on to help create offense. The preseason No. 22 Tar Heels will once again face a challenging schedule, which not only includes ACC heavyweights Georgia Tech, Florida State, Wake Forest and Clemson, but also features a three-game series with No. 21 Auburn and dates with No. 15 Richmond and No. 25 Virginia Commonwealth. Carolina will play a school-record 39 home games in Fox sat down prior to the season to discuss the 2003 Tar Heels, and here is some of what he had to say: ON THE PITCHING STAFF We ve got to start with pitching. That s going to be the nucleus of our team and our strength returning, really because we lost just one pitcher in Scott Autrey. The rest are back. Hopefully, they are all going to be a year better. If they continue to make the jump that most of these juniors we have on our team made from 2001 to 2002, then we ll be very competitive. We were better last year on the mound, compared to Now we want to be able to look back and say in 2003 we were better than in Whenever you have a good nucleus of pitchers back, it s a good sign, because pitching is still the name of the game. It can keep us in a lot of games. We have depth. We re a lot on the pitching side the way we were last year position-player wise. With the depth that we have, it s going to be a challenge for our players, because they know that there are guys waiting in the wings to throw. You have to start with Daniel Moore, Scott Manshack and Garry Bakker guys who started games for us last year and really showed flashes of what they are capable of doing. Daniel was outstanding at Wake Forest, at Georgia Tech and against Florida State. Scott really came into his own, going 7-0 as a sophomore. He s like a different player this year in terms of his confidence. You can just tell this fall that he has a different presence. The light has gone on for him, where he realizes how good he can be at this level. Garry showed what he is capable of doing last year as a freshman, and we think he will continue to improve. We ve got two relievers in Michael Gross and Whitley Benson that we will use as a double-headed closer so they re both fresh. If one of them has pitched a couple of games, then we won t mind closing with the other one. The key for us is to be able to get them innings, because they re two of our best guys. We don t want to leave them sitting in the bullpen and not pitch them. Kevin Brower will also come out of the bullpen, and last year for a three week period was one of our best relievers. We also have our four freshmen Zack Zuercher, Adam Kalkhof, Jonathan Hovis and Matt Danford. They all really pitched well this fall. We were pleased. They all had good command, they throw quick and they re all pretty good athletes for their position. We also have Bo Dickerson back from injury who has looked good so far. Todd Boessen and Jason King are also back from being injured last year. Bryan Phillips, Ross Cook and Scott Senatore all give us added depth as well and will be keys for us. We ve got 16 guys who all have a chance to contribute. We re very competitive on the mound. Any time you ve got competition, that s a great thing. ON THE OFFENSE We haven t replaced what we had last year, in terms of somebody who can do what Russ Adams, Adam Greenberg and Chris Maples did. We re not expecting that. We ll be a different team offensively. We re not expecting to hit 108 home runs again. But I think we can be very competetive offensively. Sammy Hewitt, Chris Iannetta, Ryan Blake, Sean Farrell and Jeremy Cleveland are all big keys for us. We hope Chad Prosser can get back to where he was as a sophomore in terms of his consistency and average. We ve got some guys who we ll plug in to the lineup and we ll look to manufacture more runs do more hitting and running, running and hitting. If we re a pitching and defense team, which is how I d have to describe us right now, then we re going to have to play offensively according to our strengths. If that s to score early and to put the onus on our pitching staff, we ll have to do it. We have to prevent the big inning. I don t think we have the firepower to go out and hit a couple of home runs an inning to get back in a game if we re four or five runs down. We won t have quite the run support, especially early. It may be a bit of a different philosophy for us. ON THE INFIELD Heading into the season, we ll look to have Sammy Hewitt or Justin Webb at third. Chad Prosser will play short, and we ll have Greg Mangum, Justin Webb or Adam Weaver at second, depending on left and right-handed pitching. Jeremy Cleveland is our leading candidate at first, but we have several guys who can play there (Blake, Iannetta, Phillips, Mark Fisher). Behind the plate will either be Ryan Blake or Chris Iannetta. Those two will split time. The good thing is that both of them can play first when they re not catching. We need both of them in the lineup offensively. Looking at the infield, we re excited to have strength up the middle. Greg Mangum and Chad Prosser are two guys who can play defense as well as anybody. You saw last year what Mangum can do he went the whole year without an error, and I thought Chad was outstanding. He cut down on his errors from the year before and was very solid. When you consider Ryan and Chris behind the plate, those two guys at short and second, and our pitching staff, that s a good start. ON THE OUTFIELD Our outfield is a bit uncertain heading into the season. One of our big returners is obviously Sean Farrell. He s penciled in at left but we could move him if somebody else steps up and left field is their best position. Sean s good enough and versatile enough that we could move him to right. We may even play him in center. He s not the speedster out there, but he s as solid an outfielder as you will find. Senior captain Sean Farrell NORTH CAROLINA BASEBALL

5 PREVIEWING THE TAR HEELS You add Chase Younts in the mix in center field. Blake will play right field and we re looking at Ross Cook in right, who s got some power and probably has the best arm on the team from an outfielder s standpoint. Mell Adams, Wes Moyer, Mike Daniel and Blair Waggett will also compete for playing time. But the outfield situation is really up in the air. We may not be settled on a certain outfield when the season starts. ON THE SCHEDULE We have 39 home games this year, which is a big plus. We wanted to cut down on travel, so we re playing one less series on the road. I think everybody plays better at home. Having a a program like Auburn come in here will be a huge challenge for us early, but we wanted to have a tough weekend like that to get us ready for conference play. This is a year when we go on the road to Clemson, Florida State, Maryland and NC State. Those are 12 road games which will be very, very difficult. Those games, as well as our whole league schedule, will be a great challenge for us. Playing at Myrtle Beach will be fun way to start for us. That s a great event down there. We have another strong schedule, and we re looking forward to it. ON THE SENIORS AND TEAM CHARACTER We really rely on our three seniors Sean Farrell, Chad Prosser and Ryan Blake to lead us. I don t know that we really have a firey vocal leader that everyone looks to. I think our coaches may have to jump in there to help fill that role this year those are harder to find now. But I think Sean leads by example with how hard he works. I think our pitching staff gets along great. They are a very close-knit bunch, especially the juniors that have been here together. Those guys have grown up here together, and hopefully they re a competitive bunch. Hopefully, they re going to try to out-do one another. I m optimistic. With our pitching staff, I ll be surprised if we re not in every game we play. We ll give up some runs, and our pitching staff is not made up of robots, but we should be in every game that we play. Coach Williams and I will have our work cut out for us. We ll have to push the right buttons to get the right guy in there and keep them all motivated and happy. It ll be hard to get them all the innings that they want. But when you can start with pitching, you ve got to feel good about your team, especially with the defense that we have. You ve got to play defense behind those guys and get some timely hits. We re working hard on keeping our strikeouts down and putting pressure on the other team to scratch for a run here and there. Hopefully, we will improve each day throughout the season. I like our schedule, I like our home games and I like this team. We ve got a good nucleus back, so we can t focus on who we lost. Seniors Chad Prosser and Ryan Blake SCOUTING THE TAR HEEL PITCHING STAFF Pitching coach Roger Williams offered the following scouting report on his staff prior to the 2003 season: RIGHT-HANDED PITCHERS Garry Bakker: Garry s coming off an outstanding freshman year would like to see him do a better job of pitching ahead in the count and staying ahead big, strong kid with a solid delivery overall fastball, slider, curve, change you just don t want to see him fight himself and get frustrated. Whitley Benson: A bulldog type pitcher who brings a lot to the table with his makeup has two good pitches that he can really locate, his fastball and his slider look to have Whitley and Michael Gross serve as a two-headed monster as our closers both will feed off each other. Todd Boessen: Todd s been hurt, but I think he s made progress with his arm strength. Any time you have a series of injuries, it s a long road back, but he seems to be in good spirits could help in long- to middle-relief. Kevin Brower: Continued to make a lot of improvement and had a really good fall would like to see him cut down on walks and not pitch so deep into the count ground ball pitcher gets great sink on his ball fastball, slider, change guy and can throw all three for strikes set-up guy. Ross Cook: Could pitch out of the bullpen fastball, curve, change has a nice, hard, tight curve ball can throw in the high 80s spent time learning our system in the fall hopefully he can add to our depth out of the bullpen. Matt Danford: A wild-card type guy, may be a mid-week starter or reliever throws four good pitches fastball, slider, curve and change changeup is outstanding for a freshman, one of the best changes I ve seen a freshman throw has a loose and resilient arm and he bounces back quickly.not sure how we re going to use him but we think we can pitch him anywhere. Michael Gross: Won our award in the fall for the pitcher with the best command and control of all his pitches look at him to close games for us and to keep games close at the end he gives us experience at the end of the game has a great split-finger pitch and a quality slider also has a plus change and fastball everything he throws moves, and that s why he s so effective put in a lot of time on his delivery, trying to tighten it up and give him more extension. Jonathan Hovis: A really good makeup sound mechanically and has a good understanding of how to pitch can throw three pitches for strikes fastball, change and curve right now he has to learn to keep the ball down consistently has a good feel for pitching should help in relief role. Jason King: Still on his way back from arm injury, but he s healthy now his velocity has started coming back has one of the best arms on the club has a plus fastball, a slider that he s worked on a lot quick arm and good movement on fastball we d like to see him help us as a long- to middle-relief guy. Scott Manshack: He won our Top Gun award in the fall for the best overall pitcher in practice in control of the game and very consistent from outing to outing really good live fastball that he can get up to as high as 91 outstanding changeup and an improved slider. Scott s got great command of the strike zone and is able to pitch inside very effectively. Bryan Phillips: Has made a lot of improvement velocity has really taken a jump since last year fastball, slider, change.chance to be mid-week starter or could fall into long- to middle-relief throwing strikes better and has better command of his stuff has worked hard on his slider. LEFT-HANDED PITCHERS Bo Dickerson: We re really excited about Bo. He didn t pitch at all last year because he was injured but had a really good fall pitching bullpens looked really solid he s come back with improved arm action from before he got injured fastball, curve ball, change was throwing 88 at the end of the fall would love to see him in the mix as a mid-week starter or could give us a lefty out of the bullpen in the middle of the game I think he s excited to pitch again. Adam Kalkhof: A very projectable type guy with his size doesn t throw with a lot of effort but still is in high 80s fastball, curve, change has good temperament on the mound doesn t get too high or too low has to be able to work down in the zone and he did that in fall practice has worked on curve ball trying to get tighter spin he s really good at holding runners for a freshman with the way he threw in fall practice, we think we could have another lefty as a mid-week starter. Daniel Moore: Outstanding arm strength throws a fastball, curve, change and has added a slider. Daniel has worked on trying to become a more complete pitcher and not just having to rely on his fastball he hasn t been throwing his slider long, but he has good knowledge of how to throw it.has grown up a lot and hopefully will have a breakout year capable of dominating. Scott Senatore: We changed his arm slot last year, and he s really a low threequarter lefty pleased with him in the fall he won our award for making the biggest jump in his development in the fall probably going to be a situational lefty.his breaking ball is improved and he throws a slider now we re looking for Scott to give us that boost as a lefty out of the bullpen. Zack Zuercher: Will be a situational lefty out of the pen fastball, curve, change has a strong frame and his velocity should continue to increase on the fastball good worker who has a chance to help us when we want to match lefties out of the pen worked on some things mechanically to become smoother.has the potential to be very good and already has the feel for his curve and change, so we think we ll get some good innings out of him NORTH CAROLINA BASEBALL 5
