2 BOSHAMER STADIUM Cary C. Boshamer Stadium provides the University of North Carolina baseball program with one of the most beautiful home facilities in the nation. Boshamer Stadium, located on Ridge Road in the heart of the Carolina campus, was a gift from 1917 Carolina graduate and textile industrialist Cary C. Boshamer of Gastonia, N.C. The Tar Heels have been playing at the current location since the late 1960s, when Emerson Field was razed due to University expansion. Boshamer donated the original lighting system in 1970 and the Tar Heels first home night game was played April 18, 1970 versus Wake Forest. Construction on the stadium began following the 1970 season, and Carolina played its first game at the new park on March 21, 1972 when Carolina defeated High Point 3-2 in its season opener. Maryland s Bob Grossman pitched a no-hitter in the stadium dedication game on April 8, The Tar Heels have hosted 865 games at the stadium and have a record of (.753), including a 28-9 mark last year. Of Carolina s 37 home games in 2002, six came against the topranked team in the country. The Tar Heels completed a threegame sweep of the No. 1 ranked Florida State Seminoles March and later in the season took one game from No. 1 Clemson in a hard-fought series. Boshamer has been home to five Atlantic Coast Conference Tournaments, in 1973, 1975, 1981, 1982 and 1983, and the 1983 NCAA East Regional. Carolina hosted the New York Yankees in exhibition games in 1977, 1979 and 1981, and Boshamer also played host to the 1987 U.S. Olympic Festival. For five straight years, from 1989 through 1993, the Carolina Invitational brought some of the nation s finest programs to do battle with ACC competition BOSHAMER RECORD BOOK MOST WINS TOP WINNING PCT (24-2) (23-2) (29-3) (27-3) (30-5) (24-4) (25-4-1)

3 BOSHAMER STADIUM just prior to the NCAA Tournament. In 1989, ESPN was on hand to televise two games live from Boshamer. That year, North Carolina upended No. 1-ranked Arizona 5-3 in 10 innings. The Tar Heels have excelled for years in games played on its home grass, including during the 2000 season three years ago when they tied a school record with 30 home wins. Carolina s 30th and final home win of the 2000 season came in dramatic fashion, a 6-5 victory over fourth-ranked Florida State on May 13. Chris Maples s two-out, pinch-hit double to right-center field drove in catcher Dan Moylan from second base for the record-tying game-winner. Meanwhile, Carolina s.857 winning percentage in 2000 tied for the fifth best ever at UNC. Carolina also won 30 games at Boshamer in 1993 when they went The 1990 squad posted a 29-3 ledger at home and posted the third-best home winning percentage in history (.906). The 1983 UNC team also tallied 29 wins at home, including five during the ACC Tournament, on their way to a overall record. Carolina has been especially successful in non-conference home games over the years, particularly since The Tar Heels are against non-acc foes over the last five years, a.892 winning percentage. Boshamer Stadium dimensions are 335 feet down the left and rightfield lines, 370 to left-center, 400 to straight-away center and 362 to the power alley in rightcenter. The main grandstand accommodates nearly 2,000 spectators and another 500 fans can watch from the terraced embankment along the first base line. The stadium houses the Carolina baseball offices, a two-story players lounge, training room and dressing rooms. Tar Heel players take advantage of a private weight training and conditioning area, which supplements the equipment found at the 8,000 square foot workout room at the Student-Athlete Development Center at Kenan Stadium. Boshamer also has indoor pitching and hitting areas and outdoor cages which allow off the field work in all weather conditions. The Walter Rabb Press Box, dedicated on May 8, 1987, seats up to 24 members of the working press and includes radio/tv booths. Over the past several years, Boshamer Stadium has undergone a number of exciting renovations to keep it one of America s finest college baseball facilities. Since 1999, the Diamond Heels Club, a group comprised of UNC Baseball alumni and other friends of the program, has been a driving force in the renovation efforts, including the completion of the Walter Rabb Lounge and Memorabilia Room, a players lounge and a state-of-the-art scoreboard and video board. The installation of the new scoreboard, which measures 42 feet tall by 47 feet long, was completed in fall The video board is approximately 12 feet by 16 feet and is capable of running video, animations or still graphics. It is a true color, full resolution board capable of showing 68 billion colors. Among the many other improvements to the stadium over the past few years are expanded dugouts, new awnings over the press box and office space, new field tarp and roller, new fencing and a new training room for the Tar Heels. UNC is fortunate to call as its home one of the finest all-around facilities in the nation. Boshamer has it all outstanding playing conditions maintained by a dedicated and knowledgeable grounds crew, excellent lighting, close-to-the-field seating and purposeful training and relaxation environments for Carolina s players and coaches. 5 CAROLINA BASEBALL: A TOTAL PROGRAM ACADEMIC SUPPORT The Academic Support Program assists studentathletes in successfully reaching their academic goals. The program supports students in the process of exploring their interests and abilities and in developing a broad academic experience. Located primarily in the Pope Academic Support Center, the program opened its doors in It is equipped with study facilities, a foreign language lab, tutorial rooms, a computer lab, a 128-seat auditorium, counselor s offices, and state-of-the-art video and computer equipment. Students meet with staff to discuss issues related to course selection, major and career exploration, academic progress and academic eligibility. In the academic year, 248 Carolina student-athletes made the ACC Academic Honor Roll which requires at least a 3.0 cumulative GPA for the year. In the fall of 2001, 154 student-athletes made the Dean's List and 135 did so in the spring of On the baseball team, Sean Farrell, Mark Griffin and Jason King were all named to the ACC Honor Roll last year. "Our young people are students first and athletes second and that will always be the case at the University, says Athletic Director Dick Baddour. That is a credit to our coaches, administrators, support staff, but most of all, our student-athletes. Their accomplishments in the classroom are very impressive." The Academic Support Program serves approximately 750 student-athletes. The Academic Support center is open from 8 a.m. to midnight five days a week and from 7:30 p.m. to midnight on Sundays. Visitors are welcome to tour the facility during afternoon hours. Computers are also available for baseball players to use in the new players lounge, adjacent to the locker room at Boshamer. The computers are equipped with a variety of software packages, including word processing, spreadsheets, CD-ROM reference materials, tutorials, internet access and capability. STRENGTH AND CONDITIONING The baseball team utilizes an 8,000-square-foot fitness center under the direction of Director of Strength and Conditioning for Olympic Sports Greg Gatz, who specializes in sport-specific training and is a speed and strength specialist. The fitness center is located below the Development Center in a wing of the Kenan Fieldhouse and features state-of-the-art equipment including free weights and Olympic weights. One of four fitness facilities used by Carolina athletes, the Kenan facility also features a performance lab where specialized aerobic equipment such as stairmasters, treadmills and biocycles are used for conditioning and monitoring rehabilitation progress. The squad also makes use of modern strength, flexibility and conditioning methods in a year-round training cycle. In addition, Tar Heel players may take advantage of a private weight training area at Boshamer Stadium which supplements that at Kenan Field House. The stadium also has indoor pitching and hitting areas and outdoor cages which allow off-the-field work in all weather conditions. The result of such training is athletes who are properly conditioned for competition. MEDICAL CARE In addition to the academic and fitness programs, the Tar Heels receive excellent care from one of the country s best sports medicine staffs. Carolina s Director of Sports Medicine, Dr. Tim Taft, oversees a program that includes care by Dr. Greg Tuttle and Dr. Bryan Smith. Dr. Mario Ciocca serves as the team physician for baseball. Head Trainer Dan Hooker directs a staff of five full-time athletic trainers and physical therapists, several graduate students and undergraduates. Graduate trainers Rachel Loughran and Laura Gardner work directly with the baseball team. The medical and athletic training facilities are located in the Student Health Center and Fetzer Gym. Both are near Tar Heel practice areas for easy access to the conscientious treatment and advice on the care and prevention of injuries that is available from the sports medicine staff. A new training room also exists at Boshamer Stadium that benefits UNC players when immediate care is needed. The Athletic Department also recognizes a responsibility in educating student athletes on the physical, mental, emotional and legal issues involved in drug abuse. Accordingly, the department has established a drug education and prevention program which is administered by the University s Student Health Services. CAROLINA OUTREACH PROGRAM For years, the Carolina baseball team has played an integral role in keeping alive the important University of North Carolina tradition of studentathletes giving back to the local community. Carolina Outreach, a part of theacc Outreach Program, is an organization of Tar Heel athletes dedicated to improving the lives of the residents of the town of Chapel Hill and the state of North Carolina. Each year, the baseball team participates in a number of community service activities, including the Juvenile Diabetes Walk-A-Thon, a Read-A-Thon at Frank Porter Graham Elementary School, visits to the Ronald McDonald House in Chapel Hill, the UNC Dance Marathon and a Sunday afternoon playday at the orphanage in Oxford. Members of the team also make weekly visits to Seawell Elementary School in North Chapel Hill. "Coming out to the community is a great way to reach out and try to touch kids lives," said Jeremy Cleveland. "It's a lot of fun. It's cool to be a part of something like this - maybe you help the kid out in a subject, or maybe you just made him feel a lot better for that day that you were here. They look up to us, and it makes us realize we are role models." Both the local elementary school students and teachers alike cherish the time the team spends in the classroom. Children are given the opportunity to improve their skills while interacting with studentathletes, allowing for a mutual beneficial relationship. "I think it's important for us as student-athletes at Carolina to realize how big an impact we can have in this community," said Daniel Moore. "Going to Seawell and reading with local kids is just one of the many things we do to stay involved. I don't think there's anything like the look you see on a small child's face when we take just a few minutes to read them a story or help them with a project. It's something that teaches us to not take the gifts we have and the opportunities we are provided at UNC for granted." The baseball team is also one of the many University athletic teams that makes weekly visits to the Pediatric Playroom at UNC Hospitals during the season. During the 2002 holiday season, the baseball team was one of UNC's 28 varsity teams to participate in a program called "Share Your Christmas." This helps provide less fortunate families with Christmas presents they could otherwise not afford. The program benefited between three and four thousand Durham County residents this year. 6 UNIVERSITY OF NORTH CAROLINA THE FIRST STATE UNIVERSITY The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill was the nation s first state university to open its doors and the only public university to award degrees in the 18th century. Authorized by the N.C. Constitution in 1776, the university was chartered by the N.C. General Assembly Dec. 11, 1789, the same year George Washington first was inaugurated as president. The cornerstone was laid for Old East, the nation s first state university building, Oct. 12, Hinton James, the first student, arrived from Wilmington, N.C., Feb. 12, By March 1 of that year there were 41 students and two professors, and by 1860 only Yale University had a larger enrollment. The 729-acre central campus includes the two oldest state university buildings, Old East and Person Hall. Old East and Playmakers Theatre, an 1852 Greek-revival building, are National Historic Landmarks. The American Society of Landscape Architects selected the Carolina campus as one of the most beautifully landscaped spots in the country. That 1999 ranking, timed to the society s centennial, is among the latest affirmations of the charm of mighty oaks, majestic quadrangles, brick sidewalks and other landscaping synonymous with UNC. 8 2002 SEASON REVIEW TAR HEELS EARN THIRD NCAA BERTH IN FOUR YEARS Carolina earned the No. 2 seed in the NCAA Regional in Columbia, S.C., and won two games over James Madison and one over South Carolina before eventually falling 3-1 to the Gamecocks in Sunday s championship game to finish the season Scott Autrey pitched a complete-game, two-hit shutout in UNC s 5-0 win over James Madison to open the Regional and propel the Tar Heels into the winner s bracket to face top-seeded South Carolina. The Gamecocks scored six runs in the first inning and held on to win 9-6 and force Carolina into Saturday night s elimination game against James Madison. Carolina outlasted the Dukes 9-7 in the nightcap to advance to Sunday s final day of the Regional. Playing its third game in two days and without starters Chris Iannetta (leg) and Ron Braun (sick), the Tar Heel turned in perhaps their most inspired game of the season in beating South Carolina 8-4. Ryan Blake and Chris Maples each homered and Sean Farrell went 4-for-5 with a pair of RBIs as UNC jumped out to an 8-1 lead and cruised to the four-run victory to force Game 7 of the regional. The Gamecocks got two runs in the first and rode the strong pitching of Blake Taylor, one of the nation s top closers who made his first start of the season, to a 3-1 win. Autrey, Farrell, Braun, Russ Adams and Greg Mangum were all named to the All-Regional team for UNC. GREENBERG, MAPLES NAMED FIRST- TEAM ALL-ACC Adam Greenberg and Chris Maples earned firstteam All-ACC baseball honors for outstanding 2002 seasons. It is the seventh consecutive year that UNC has had at least one representative on the first-team All- ACC team, but the first such honor for both Greenberg (outfield) and Maples (utility). Maples batted.347 with 23 home runs and 79 RBIs. He established new single-season school records for extra-base hits (48), total bases (190) and at bats (274) and his 23 home runs and 24 doubles were each just one shy of matching school records. His 79 RBIs were just two shy of the school record of 81 set in He also had a team-high five saves in 21 appearances out of the bullpen. Greenberg, the 2000 ACC Rookie of the Year and a second-team all-conference selection that year, had a breakout junior season, batting.337 with 17 home runs, 57 RBIs and 35 steals. He was one of three Tar Heels to start all 64 games in 2002 and he has started all but two games in his UNC career and 163 straight in center field. He had seven leadoff home runs in 2002 and his name appears throughout the single-season and career school record books. He is the all-time UNC leader with 17 career triples and he ranks second all-time with 201 runs, third with 124 walks, fourth with 92 stolen bases and fifth with 253 hits. Russ Adams THREE TAR HEELS EARN ALL-AMERICA HONORS For just the second time in school history and the first time since 1994, three Tar Heels earned All- America honors in Russ Adams, Chris Maples and Adam Greenberg were all honored by various publications in their postseason balloting. Russ Adams was a first-team pick by Baseball America and a third-team selection by the National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association. Chris Maples was a first-team pick by Collegiate Baseball and a second-team pick by Baseball America, while Adam Greenberg was tabbed third-team All-America by both Baseball America and Collegiate Baseball. Chris Iannetta was honored by Baseball America as a second-team Freshman All-America selection. ADAMS A CANDIDATE FOR NATIONAL PLAYER OF THE YEAR HONORS While Russ Adams was not recognized as an all conference player in the fiercely competitive Atlantic Coast Conference, he was a candidate for several national player of the year awards. Adams was one of five finalists for the prestigious Golden Spikes Award, presented annually by the Major League Baseball Players Association. This year s finalists were Adams, Clemson s Khalil Greene and Jeff Baker, Bobby Brownlie from Rutgers and Stanford s Jeremy Guthrie. Greene won the award. Adams was also a semifinalist for both the Rotary Smith Award and the Dick Howser Trophy. The Smith Award is given annually by the Rotary Club of Houston, while the Howser Trophy is presented by the National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association. BIG TURNAROUND IN ACC PLAY One year after getting off to its worst start in ACC history at 0-7, the Tar Heels finished third in the conference standings at 17-7 in Having gone 9-15 in the league last year, Carolina s eight-game turnaround was the second biggest improvement in wins in conference history. Only Clemson, which was 20-4 in 1994 and in 1993, had a more dramatic turnaround in ACC play. Carolina had not finished higher than fourth in the league since 1990 prior to this year s third-place showing, which was also the last year UNC swept as many three-game series from ACC opponents as the Tar Heels did so this year (four). Carolina opened ACC play with eight straight wins for just the fourth time in school history to tie the second best ACC start ever at UNC. The Tar Heels also won their first eight games in 1990 and 1984 and were a perfect 14-0 in ACC games in Chris Maples set new school records for extra-base hits (48), total bases (190) and at bats (274) in He nearly broke UNC records for home runs, doubles and runs batted in NORTH CAROLINA BASEBALL

Carolina held FSU to just one unearned run over the final 17 innings of the series, including a 14-inning scoreless drought from the second inning on Saturday to Sunday s seventh inning. Florida State appeared to be rolling in the opener, but Carolina turned the series around with a nine-run seventh inning and an 11-7 win. Since trailing by five runs entering the fifth, Carolina outscored FSU 25-2 for the remainder of the series. Maples sparked UNC s big inning with a leadoff homer and eventually pushed the Tar Heels ahead with a grand slam.
