Carolina is ranked highest in the Collegiate Baseball Top 30 Poll where it checks in at No. 17 The USA Today Coaches Poll has Carolina at No. 18 while Perfect Game has the Heels at No. 20. The Tar Heels entered the Baseball America Top 25 Poll for the first time at No. 24 last week and moved to No. 23 this week. Charlotte is receiving votes in the Coaches Poll. Davidson is unranked. North Carolina-Charlotte Series The Tar Heels and 49ers have met 38 previous times with Carolina holding a advantage. Carolina has won the last three meetings and nine of the last 10. Carolina has played a home and home series with Charlotte the last three seasons and will do the same this season. North Carolina-Davidson Series The Tar Heels and Wildcats have met 104 previous times with Carolina holding an advantage. Carolina has won all 12 meetings against Davidson under head coach Mike Fox. Carolina has played a home and home series with Charlotte the last three seasons and will do the same this season Scouting The Tar Heels Levi Michael continued his torrid pace entering the season as the junior shortstop went 4-for-7 (.571) in the series win over Seton Hall. Michael crossed the plate three times, drove in five, walked five times and stole a pair of bases. Michael is 6-for-7 on the base paths this season which is tied for first in the ACC. Freshman Colin Moran enjoyed his first career home series as the third sacker was 5-for-9 (.556) at the dish with five RBI, including his first career home run in Friday s contest. A week after not recording a decision the starting pitchers went 2-1 on the weekend with Chris Munnelly and Patrick Johnson earning wins. The trio of Munnelly, Johnson and Morin combined to throw 18 innings and allow seven earned runs for a 3.50 ERA. Greg Holt continued his impressive senior campaign by tossing 3.2 innings of one run ball Sunday. Freshmen Shane Taylor and Tate Parrish have yet to allow a run in their first collegiate campaigns. Scouting The 49ers The 49ers (7-1) are coming off a 3-1 series win over visiting Missouri over the weekend as they won a pair of one-run ball games before falling to the Tigers in extra innings in the second game of a doubleheader Saturday. Charlotte erupted for a 22-7 win over Missouri in the finale on Sunday. Tony Montalbano and Shane Basen have paced the offense with averages over.400 on the early season. Montalbano has tallied 14 hits in 31 at bats for a.452 average, while Basen owns a.440 mark (11-25) with 11 runs scored. Corey Shaylor is the big run producer with 17 RBI on the year, including eight against Missouri Sunday. Junior right-hander Chad Rothlin will get the start for Charlotte on Tuesday. Rothlin owns a 1-0 mark after an 11-0 win over Coppin State Feb. 20. This will be the first road game of the year for the 49ers who were 8-10 on the road last year. Scouting The Wildcats Davidson will make a trip through the Triangle this week as the Wildcats take on NC State on Tuesday before facing the Tar Heels on Wednesday. The Wildcats own a 5-4 record on the year following a 2-1 series win over Lafayette over the weekend. Forrest Brandt (.480 average) and Drew Gadaire (.471 average) have paced the Wildcats offense combining for 17 RBI through the opening nine games. Davidson has yet to name a starter for Wednesday s meeting but it will not be right-hander Andy Bass who started last week s mid-week tilt as he will get the call Tuesday against NC State. Michael Puts On A Show In LA Junior shortstop Levi Michael showed why he was named a preseason All-America by several publications. Michael went 9-for-18 (.500) at the plate with four runs scored and three RBI. The Welcome, N.C., native opened the season ledger with a RBI triple in the first inning against Cal Poly Feb. 18. Michael finished 3-for-5 on the day. Michael followed that performance with another 3-for-5 day at No. 8 Cal State Fullerton Feb. 19 before closing out the weekend with three more hits and a pair of RBIs against Missouri and USC. For his efforts, Michael was named to the CB360 Weekly Honor Roll and was also named the Tar Heel Performer of the Week on Feb. 21. Season Openers Under Fox Carolina is now 13-0 on opening day under head coach Mike Fox. The Tar Heels have won 14 straight openers and last lost their first game of the season at Coastal Carolina in For just the second time in 11 seasons the Tar Heels opened the season away from the friendly confines of Boshamer Stadium. The Tar Heels are 12-1 in home openers under Fox with the lone defeat coming in 2008 when Carolina dropped an 8-6 decision to Old Dominion in extra innings. Freshmen Enter The Fray Carolina had three freshmen in the opening day starting lineup for the second consecutive year. Colin Moran paced the group as the starting third baseman finished the opening weekend by going 4-for-13 (.308) with a run scored and a pair of RBI. Tom Zengel saw time at DH and at first base while driving in four runs on the weekend. Parks Jordan started the first three games of the season in left field for Carolina. The pitching staff saw the most involvment from freshmen as five new faces took the mound for Carolina. The freshmen pitchers racked up a pair of relief wins, while allowing just three runs in 9 2/3 innings. Stallings Amping Up The Power Junior backstop Jacob Stallings is halfway to equaling his single season career high for home runs as he took Fullerton s Tyler Pill deep in the second game of the season. Stallings has bulked up to 215 pounds and has been a factor with the bat so far this spring driving in five runs thanks to three extra-base hits. The Brentwood, Tenn., native is one of the top defensive catchers in the ACC, perhaps the country, having cut down 4-of-8 potential base stealers and perhaps should have added two more with a little help from his infielders. Stallings cut down the most runners during the 2010 Cape Cod League. Bullpen Magic One of the question marks entering the season for the Tar Heels was how the bullpen would perform after a bit of a down year in 2010 that saw them post a team ERA of Returning 80 percent of the appearances made a year ago and adding more talented arms was sure to help the Tar Heels in The Tar Heel arms arose to the occasion in California getting out of several tough jams earning 11 outs of the 16 first batters they faced. The bullpen inherited 20 runners over the first four games but allowed just four of those runners to cross home plate. 3 The back end combination of Greg Holt (two wins) and Cody Penny (two saves) combined for seven scoreless innings over the weekend. Starting Rotation Brings Consistency Over the past couple of years the Tar Heels have been known for having a shutdown Friday night starter with the likes of Andrew Miller, Alex White and Matt Harvey, 2011 may be a different story. The Tar Heels boast six to seven pitchers who could see action as a weekend starter this season. Chris Munnelly has struck out eight in backto-back starts to open the season earning a tough no decision in the season opener against Cal Poly before earning a win Friday over Seton Hall. Patrick Johnson followed Munnelly s strong performance with one of his own against No. 8 Cal State Fullerton. Johnson allowed two runs, one earned, in 5 2/3 innings of action. Johnson followed with seven one-run innings against Seton Hall en route to his first win of the season. Freshman Kent Emanuel impressed in his first start allowing just two runs in five innings of work against Missouri and will get the call against Charlotte Tuesday. Sophomore Michael Morin threw much better than his line indicated as he left after 5 2/3 innings of work at USC allowing four runs but a bases clearing triple tacked on three more runs to his final line. Morin suffered the series finale loss to Seton Hall despite allowing just one earned run in 5.1 innings of work. Coaches Pick Tar Heels Fourth In Coastal As determined by a vote of the league s 12 head coaches, Carolina was picked to finish fourth in the Coastal Division. The Tar Heels were picked to finish behind Virginia, Georgia Tech and Miami. Clemson was picked to claim the overall crown. Michael Claims Preseason Honors Junior shortstop Levi Michael has earned several preseason awards so far this season. Michael led the Tar Heels in nearly every offensive category a year ago. Baseball America, Collegiate Baseball and Perfect Game all selected Michael to be a preseason All-America at shortstop. Michael began his career at second base and then made the move to third a year ago before returning to a familiar position at shortstop this season. Tar Heels Sign 16 Carolina has continued its success on the recruiting trail by signing an 16-man class last November that will join the program next fall in time for the 2012 season.
