1 Shipston Cycling Club Newsletter Issue 20 w/c 24 September 2018 Welcome to the Shipston Cycling Club newsletter. After a disastrous end to last week and the resultant cancellations of at least two major sportive events being VeloSouth and L tape event, fingers crossed for the weekend ahead. Despite cooler mornings the sun has returned during the day and temperatures on the up. Hope everyone has an opportunity to make the best of it. I have included a quick summary of last weeks AGM and would ask that everyone look at the section relating to the changes to the Club Constitution. Lester s profile is the last one I have received,thanks to those who have replied with their rider profile and a reminder to those to forward their replies in due course. Last Week s Ride There were, unsurprisingly, no riders to join me for last Sunday as it was raining heavily at the start. I do have news though, of a new cafe which will welcome cyclists, to be opened next month in Chipping Campden. 'Da Stefania' in Cambrook Court, High Street is going to have indoor and outdoor seating and will be offering hot and cold Italian street food, hot and cold drinks to eat in or take away. 2 Gary s Kit Korner garygristwood54@outlook.com Gary is looking into couple of new items to add to the selection already available and is looking into getting some sample products to gauge interest from the membership. Remember when looking to place an order not only is the club offering a 20% subsidy but if you can get together with other members then the postage costs can be shared. Watch this space!!!! Upcoming Events Thursday Rides have now finished. Big thanks to Alex and Kim for their organisation this year, Any club members who want to either ride during the evening using lights or ride during the weekdays and want company then please post on the Facebook page or if you are on Whatsap. 2

3 Summary of Shipston Cycling Club AGM: On Thursday the Club AGM had a reasonable turnout with about 16 members present. The current committee was re-elected for the forthcoming year, following their reports. The Financial position of the club improved and as a result, as we are a non-profit making organisations, it was projected that during the year 2018/2019 the club would look at the opportunity to fund or assist fund Ride Leader courses to help with the club s development. It was also proposed to increase club kit subsidies to 20%. Whilst on the topic of club kit, Gary is looking into a couple of new items so watch Gary s Kit corner for updates. A discussion took place regarding an amendment for clarity purposes to the membership section of the club constitution (see separate newsletter item). The membership stands at 38 with some potential new members in the pipe line. However it was felt following Gary s update on what Wellesbourne Wheelers had recently undertaken to look at a more structured marketing approach based on what the members felt of what the club wants to achieve, it s ethos and style of riders/rides the members require. This needs a thorough discussion and it was decided an initial advertising item in Shipston Forum would be followed by a flyer in the new year. Overseas holidays were discussed and members not only visited the Majorca 2019 option (see Gary s report in this newsletter) but also discussed looking into an option to go to Mont Ventoux in France which Alex will look into. An additional option was discussed with the long weekend in UK approach for say smaller groups staying in B&B s, Cottage etc. as there are many beautiful areas of the UK, unexplored by many of us. The 2018 Xmas party was discussed and a provisional date looks to be around the 7/8 December and everyone seemed happy to go to Lighthorne Cafe again. Further details will be forthcoming. Rider profile - Lester Staite I ve always had a keen interest in most sport and was fortunate when I was 16 to be asked to join the playing staff of Coventry City F.C as an apprentice at the very start of the Sky Blue revolution in 1962 under manager Jimmy Hill I also studied marketing and economics whilst playing and eventually moving on to play with two other clubs in semi pro 3

4 When I retired from playing at 29 I qualified as a football referee and obtained Class 1 status and managed to get as high as the feeder leagues one down from the Football 42 I was too old to go any higher ( yes age discrimination!!!) I rode a bike like many as a child but because of other interests it wasn t until 1996 that I purchased a mountain bike and within a year decided to change to a road bike It was in 2012 when I first met with Shipston Cycling at the Kineton coffee stop and was invited to join them on future rides and that gave me the much needed experience I required for group riding and riding etiquette I really don t have a bucket list although I would love to think I m capable of Lands End/John O Groats..? Who knows but it s a challenge that does draw me! My most memorable ride to date.. well... two really.. First the Dragon Run in Wales for the sheer hell of the climbs which was a very hard ride but the real highlight was the Prudential London 100 in 2015 riding for the BHF riding on closed roads..the crowds and of course the finish on the Mall was exceptional.! I currently have 3 bikes.. My trusty old Aerial Cube and my Trek Damone mainly for the winter and more recently my Bianchi Intenso with Disc brakes Ive no wish to add to them and like any bike whatever the bells and whistles it might have..at my age still got to peddle it!! Favourite cyclist has to be the great Miguel Indurain 5 times winner of the Tour To me he was just a quiet and conscientious pro who just got on with the job and very much in the same mould as Chris Froome does today Perhaps very similar riders although Indurain never crashed once in the Tour de France! A young Indurain verses Froome..now that would be interesting? How to make cycling more enjoyable..wow..motorists with vehicles they cant handle...take them off the road would be a start..oh and the future thought of driverless cars..what a nightmare that would be!!! In order to attract many younger riders it would be wonderful to see more cycling tracks. I was very impressed with the set up in Cardiff where Geraint Thomas started. Youngsters to be taught properly in a safe environment and preparing them for the bigger picture when they eventually decide to go on the road The same could apply to adults or even some of the current riders who fail to understand the highway code!!! As for me now at my age.. I just love to cycle to keep fit and see the countryside. When I think that people come from all over the world to see the Cotswold and surrounding area we live in and pay a lot of money for the privilege.. for us its free That s a bonus! 4

5 Amendment to the Club s Constitution: SCC CLUB CONSTITUTION AMENDMENT - MEMBERSHIP AMENDMENT WORDING The Secretary will remind all members, by , of their renewal date and ask if they intend to continue their membership. All expired members will be contacted so the Club will know who is a late payer or who has left the club (temporarily or permanently). If any Member declares they wish to take a break for a valid reason e.g. due to illness, injury or just a sabbatical, their start date will be reset to when they make their next payment or re-join a club ride (whichever is first). If the Secretary is not informed of any wish to discontinue club Membership then membership will continue for 3 months after which time Membership will be cancelled. If at any time up to the 3 month deadline the Secretary receives late payment the renewal date will be backdated to the anniversary of first payment i.e. initial start date. The onus is on all Members to inform the Secretary of any changes in personal details e.g. address, contact numbers etc. required for the administration of the Club. All riders please take note 'All riders wishing to join a route at a place other than the start point must inform the ride leader as the route is not sacrosanct and is liable to change. 6 Majorca 2019 Those of you that attended the AGM last week will know the club are looking at undertaking two overseas holidays next year - France (to be organised by Alex) and Majorca (to be organised by yours truly). Those that went to Majorca 5 months ago will know what a great time was had by all and we are looking to go again next year around the same time (end of April/beginning of May), hopefully to the same hotel (Duva Apartotel in Puerto Pollensa), as the option of two bedroom apartments meets the needs of a lot of our members (obviously, there is also the option of one bedroom apartments). I intend to organise and oversee a group booking for us with Jet2Holidays as per this year, as this provides the potential flexibility to change who is travelling right up to two weeks before departure and also ensures that the flights and hotel tie in at the point of booking. As with this year, the holiday will be a joint one with our friends from my other club in Wellesbourne Wheelers. At this stage, all I need to know is who is interested in going so that I can get some idea on potential numbers, as we need a minimum of 10 to make a group booking. Those of you who went this year may still have in your possession the Jet2holidays Rain Check 60 vouchers which will save you that amount, so you will need to have these to hand when it comes to booking. They are valid for booking purposes until the end of October for holidays to be taken next year, so we will look to get the holiday booked by October 31st. In terms of budgeting for the holiday, I'd allow up to 500 to cover 6 nights accommodation, breakfast, flights and transfers, but I'm pretty confident that the price will actually be lower than this in the final analysis. Finally, please let me know by Sunday 7th October if you think you may be interested in going and we will take it from there. Gary Gristwood.
