(Last updated: ) Commission Purpose: The Commission shall be concerned with studies and recommendations relating to activities including but not limited to land-use; natural resources; utilities; and transportation systems within the metropolitan planning area. 2 MARATHON COUNTY METROPOLITAN PLANNING COMMISSION Bicycle and Pedestrian Sub-Committee Minutes August 27, 2015 Members: Phil Valitchka, Aaron Ruff, John Beatty, John Nowaczyk, Dennis Helke, Andrew Plath, Kenzie Payne, Fred Heider Staff: Dave Mack, Andy Lynch Others: Pat Peckham-City Pages 1. Call to Order Meeting was called to order by Valitchka at 6:37 pm. 2. Welcome and Introductions 3. Approve the Minutes of the August 27, 2015 Meetings Motion/second by PLATH/NOWACZYK to approve the meeting minutes from the August 27, 2015 meeting. Motion carried by voice vote, no dissent. 4. Bicycle/Pedestrian Plan Approval Discussion was opened on the draft plan. Mack explained the timeline of the plan and the next steps. Members Nowaczyk and Plath detailed items they wanted to have added to the plan, such as footrests and additional safety railings on the Bridge Street bridge. Heider supplied a list of additional recommendations focused on pedestrian safety. Helke, citing a citizen s concern, asked to have a path extended in Kroenenwetter to facilitate access to the YMCA along CTH X. A discussion on including the Trillium Lane path in Rib Mountain to the Top Priorities list also took place. All notes and concerns are being sent to Toole Design to be further incorporated in the plan. Motion/second by BEATTY/PLATH to approve the plan with changes to be incorporated. Motion carried by voice vote, no dissent. 5. Bicycle/Pedestrian Plan Implementation Process Lynch began the discussion noting that some of the priority program initiatives were already in the process. Valitchka suggested doing public awareness to build support for the plan and change the culture. It was generally agreed by the group that this was the priority. Peckham mentioned that showcasing small successes in the media could help gain better public awareness of cycling and pedestrian issues. It was suggested that a short term goal of educating law enforcement could be done with possibly hiring Peter Flucke, WeBike, Etc., to assist with this; this was agreed upon by the group. 6. Community Updates and future Events; Helke reported the Wausau Wheelers Club continues to grow in membership and are involved with rides for the upcoming Irish Fest. Helke also noted the presence of Sheriff deputies patrolling on bikes for events. Nowaczyk reported that they are sponsoring a Honor Flight ride fundraiser as well Beatty discussed the changes made to their Bike Rodeo program that involved the target age group and they felt it was more effective. Lynch reported that he would need volunteers in the near future to complete a bicycle rack inventory for the metro area. 9. Next Meeting Date September 24, 2015 at 6:30 PM 8.
